The Haunted Hotel series is a favorite here at Big Fish (and our gamers). So much so that Haunted Hotel: Silent Waters is the 12th installment! We sat down with the Elephant Games Haunted Hotel team so they could share some information about themselves, the game, and some juicy hints about the future of the series. What was the inspiration behind your game?
After a cold winter and a detective thriller of eleventh part, Haunted Hotel: The Axiom Butcher, we decided to plunge the players into the atmosphere of a real horror. The setting was inspired by abandoned big mountain hotels and nature of Vermont. We were looking for contrast in the characters: the way how closest people can be the exact mirror of each other and what kind of result this might have.

How long have you been working on this game?
The idea of the new Haunted Hotel was born at the end of February. The phrase pronounced by one of the main game characters that start with the words «I want you to remember, Lucien…» became the keynote of the whole game. You know, the power of words and promises is very high. It can result in both creation and destruction. We dedicated several months to disclosing this idea in our game.

What are you most proud/excited for about this game?
Our team can certainly be proud of the fact that Silent Waters represents a hotel that is full of ghosts. The PC won’t feel lonely throughout the game: he will be able to meet the sprits of the people who walked into the hotel by chance; many of them didn’t manage to escape the place. Also, while searching the rooms, the PC gradually opens the story of the hotel and pours light onto its dark secrets. We certainly can tell that we’re proud of the atmosphere we created in Haunted Hotel: Silent Waters.

What was your biggest challenge on the game’s development?
It was hard not to miss all of the details while revealing the story of the characters. We paid all of our attention to that, so we hope our players will enjoy the characters that are well-elaborated, as well as their interaction with each other.

How did you come up with the idea about playing as two characters in the Haunted Hotel series?
In the main part of the game, we’re playing for the character in the situation that can be encountered by any of us. However, in bonus chapter we’re focusing on the story of a young man on purpose. By the way, the story of the bonus chapter is a sort of foreshadowing that will be disclosed in the next game of Haunted Hotel series!

Can you provide any teasers or interesting snippets about the next game in the series (HH12)?
In a manner of speaking, the main theme of Haunted Hotel 13 is that « accidents are not accidental». Moreover, the players will see PC’s face for the first time throughout the game series, and even find out his name! The game certainly has a non-standard implementation and a unique setting. We’re looking forward to showing you the drafts, however all in good time. J

Haunted Hotel EngineerHow long have you worked in games or at Elephant Games?
I’ve been working at Elephant for four years already, and I’ve spent the same amount of time on developing games. This is my first and my favorite job.

What are you most proud/excited for about this game?
I like the art and the atmosphere of our games most of all. When I walk the locations, I instantly move to the time, country and place of action, sense the wind, hear door’s creak and feel the goose bumps on my back because of sensing something terrible near me.

Do you have a favorite ghost story? Why is it your favorite? (Maybe favorite game within the series?)
My favorite ghost stories are about the ghosts living in middle-age castles and sometimes lacking their heads. :D My favorite hotel is Haunted Hotel: Death Sentence.

What do you like most about working at Elephant Games?
Mostly I like elaborating and implementing the ideas together with my colleagues, emerging into the ideas of the artists – and then implementing them and adding something of my own to them, thus making something good as a result. I also like to create algorithms of the code and different unusual things.

I’m working at Elephant for almost three years.

What are you most proud/excited for about this game?
I like the color grade, the devastation on the location and complicated views. It’s interesting to draw and create a unique atmosphere.

Do you have a favorite ghost story? Why is it your favorite? (Maybe favorite game within the series?)
(Casper)! That’s a paradox, but I don’t like horror myself, though I create games of this genre. I like the tenth game of Haunted Hotel series.

What do you like most about working at Elephant Games?
I like our friendly team, interesting tasks and the possibility to develop my artist and animator skill.

Two and a half years, it will be three in November.

What are you most proud/excited for about this game?
I guess the solidity of the concept. As well as really murky atmosphere. The things that make me proud are pretty complicated locations – we did apply a lot of effort to them.

Do you have a favorite ghost story? Why is it your favorite? (Maybe favorite game within the series?)
One of the most favorite ghost movies is The Others. Grace Stewart takes her kids with a strange disease (daylight intolerability) to a mansion, hires servants and sets strict rules. Strange things happen in the house. Grace suspects that the mansion is cursed and that there’s something supernatural in it. She looks for a way to stop this. Later it turns out that the servants she hired died a long time ago (one of the characters finds their graves). Then it turns out that Grace strangled her kids and committed suicide – they are ghosts themselves. Those they considered to be the ghosts turned out to be a living family who moved in to the mansion after the Stuarts died. They conducted a spirit rapping with a medium, who seemed to be an evil spirit to the Stuarts. The living family moves out, the ghosts of Grace’s kids do not fear the light anymore, and this mansion belongs to them forever.

I’m a terrible story teller, so just watch the movie if you haven’t done that yet. :)

A bit more than a year.

What are you most proud/excited for about this game?
I’m proud to be one of the creators of this game! I like everything about it: atmosphere, cutscenes, sound! Special thanks to our sound engineer for music!

Do you have a favorite ghost story? Why is it your favorite? (Maybe favorite game within the series?)
I like the plot of the next part of Haunted Hotel. :) As for the movies, it’s Just Like Heaven, Ghost, Beetlejuice. That’s perhaps an unexpected answer, since most of the folks will certainly name different horror movies, which is logical, considering that Haunted Hotel is a horror. However, I can watch horror only for inspiration – I can’t sleep well after I watch them. It’s more fun to scare than to be scared! :)

What do you like most about working at Elephant Games?
I like the possibility to constantly be involved into creative activities and the ability to implement my ideas. Also, I’m excited about the people I work with! There are a lot of talented multi-sided people who are pleasant to work and talk with!

Do you have a favorite ghost story? Why is it your favorite? (Maybe favorite game within the series?)
I like a ghost movie 1408 and other similar movies, in which key words, movements or a couple of important moments significantly change the direction of perception of the film on the whole.

What do you like most about working at Elephant Games?
Elephant creates not simply interesting games, but engaging adventures enveloped by fun mysteries and secrets that I don’t fully understand myself. :)
Just kidding, of course. I simply can’t tell you all of the secrets.

Ruslan – Sound Engineer at Elephant Games

RuslanHow long have you worked in games or at Elephant Games?
I’ve been making sounds and whole musical compositions at Elephant for three years already. All of these three years I’m making the sound and music for Haunted Hotel.

What are you most proud/excited for about this game?
Everything about this game is perfect! Starting with genial story and ending by its brilliant implementation. We’re (game designer and artists) paying special attention to making the sounds – we discuss every tiny point. It’s fun for me to create the right perception and the full feeling for the players. We do apply a lot of effort to make sure the players embrace the atmosphere of every game.
