Big City Adventure: Vancouver
Just in time for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, Jolly Bear Games brings you Big City Adventure: Vancouver.

Vancouver, BC lies between the Burrard Inlet to the north and the Fraser River to the south and ranks as the third largest city in Canada. Now you can explore the area as you search for thousands of hidden objects and uncover facts about the city and its history. You’ll get the chance to seek-and-find your way across Vancouver on your way to the world-famous Whistler Resort, home to the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The Big City Adventure: Vancouver Collector’s Edition offers Concept art, desktop wallpapers, screensaver, music files, winter sports venue tour, a complete walkthrough, an achievements system, and a bonus adventure game that starts in Rome and takes you throughout Europe, and much more!

We were able to get in touch with the game developers at Jolly Bear Games and ask a few questions about the new game.

Big City Adventure: Vancouver

What makes Vancouver such a great location for a BCA game?

Vancouver is one of the world’s most amazing cities and is a perfect location for a Big City Adventure game. It is often voted as one of the world’s most livable cities. It offers all the benefits of a big city environment, while still being incredibly close to the natural beauty of the sea and the mountains. This gave us a great variety of locations to draw from, both modern and rustic. Some of the locations we were able to explore in the game are truly beautiful. Plus, there aren’t too many cities where you can go to the beach, take a boat ride, go skiing, and dine in a fine restaurant all in the same day!

Vancouver, a rather rough and tumble frontier town during its founding, also has a fascinating and colorful history. Hopefully you will enjoy reading about characters like ‘Gassy Jack’ Deighton, the Guinness Family connection (yes, that family) and some rather odd historical practices like the dynamite fishing technique. In fact, even though we live in Vancouver, we learned some things about our own city we previously knew nothing about.

Finally, Vancouver will be in the news a lot over the next month, so we thought the timing was perfect to set our next Big City Adventure here. For those of you that want to find out a bit more about Vancouver and its history, while having a lot of fun along the way, this is just the game for you.

What new features can players expect that are unique to this release of BCA?

In order to showcase our city at its best, one of the big changes we made in this release was the move to a higher screen resolution. That should also help any of you out there with tired eyes – no more fuzzy objects.

In addition to all your favorites from previous games, we have three new mini-games in store in this release of Big City Adventure:

  • Totems – all the totems must be placed so there’s only one of each in every column and row.
  • Event Planning – discover the correct order of the colored tickets.
  • Word Search – a traditional word search puzzle where the words are hidden in a mixed-up grid of letters.

We also have a whole bunch of new content in the special Collector’s Edition:

  • A bonus adventure game that takes you on a mini-European tour.
  • A context-sensitive game walkthrough.
  • Concept art, desktop wallpapers, screensaver, music files, winter sports venue tour.
  • Achievement medals (such as finding all coins or achieving no missed click penalties).

We hope you enjoy all these extras and we would love to hear what else you would like to see in our future Big City Adventures.

How did being Vancouver residents impact the development and direction of the game?

I think Big City Adventure: Vancouver was one of the most enjoyable in the series for us to make. After all, Vancouver is our hometown. It is always fun to share our favorite locations with those who haven’t been here before. I would definitely encourage you to visit if you play the game and like what you see. Vancouver is a great place to vacation as well as live and everyone is always welcome.

Being able to spend a lot of time at the locations and being passionate about our city definitely shows in the final game. We wanted the scenes to look fantastic and hopefully you agree we achieved that aim. We all love making the Big City Adventure games and this one was especially fun. We consider ourselves very fortunate to be able to do what we love for a living. But the most rewarding thing of all is the wonderful feedback we receive from you, the players. So, we hope you have as much fun exploring Vancouver as we had building the game for you.

By the Numbers

For those of you who like numbers, here’s what happened during the development of Big City Adventure: Vancouver:

1 – new baby born

2 – marriages

3 – the number of games we were working on

6 – feet of snow that needed to be shoveled

4 – moving days

3 – the number of times a bear crashed through my fence
