Some of these games offer more complex gaming mechanics and may require a little help from Mom or Dad, but the characters and the game mechanics make for great family fun.

Those kinds of books offered a unique reading experience by giving the reader an active role in the fate of the characters. Either that, or they frustrated readers when decision after decision led to a page describing a character’s untimely death.

While it might have been fun for a while, “choose your own adventure” has limitations in book format. To create a truly immersive, dynamic experience, books would have to be the length of entire encyclopedia collections. Imagine trying to hold an entire bookshelf in your lap!

There’s a new kid on the block when it comes to interactive storytelling, and he might have a pretty big edge over his text-based counterparts. Video games are the ultimate choose-your-own-adventure experience. You not only control the characters’ decisions, but also their individual actions and, in a lot of cases, what they look like and what their abilities are.

As a recent VentureBeat article put it, video games have more storytelling potential than any other medium. Games have the advantage of creating an interactive experience from the moment you press play. Even if they don’t deal with complex or mature topics – something that a lot of games do anyway – they put you directly in control of the action and the characters. Developers don’t tell players what happens so much as they create an entire world to explore and, well, stuff just happens after that.

Many video game developers are already expert storytellers, but, according to the article, they’re continuing to perfect the craft.

“These choose-your-path decisions now decide the fate of entire races when placed behind the guise of Commander Shepard, an avatar for your long-repressed dreams of being an astronaut,” the article stated. “That ‘gimmick’ now means life or death for a reporter, a private eye, an FBI agent, and a father and his young son in Quantic Dream’s Heavy Rain. Very few movies have even approached this. The only example I can think of is a video-tape-accompanied version of Clue, which was marketed as a game anyway.”

Going even further, advancements in technology for online games have allowed players not only to experience in-depth stories, but share them in real time with their friends!

One of the criticisms that has cropped up with regard to video games is that they don’t deal with complex, real-world issues. While it’s true that the average person probably doesn’t have to travel through time to help historical figures find hidden objects, some games deal with problems that a large number of people face.

Can games tackle real issues?

Storytelling has served a number of purposes throughout the ages. We’ve used stories like “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” to teach lessons. Other stories exist so we can escape reality for a while. Just like the stories of old, video games can serve a variety of purposes.

The more stereotypical view of video games has stuck them firmly in the “escapism” category, but that doesn’t mean they can’t deal with topics from the real world. Some games like Planescape: Torment ask the deep philosophical questions such as “what can change the nature of a man?” However, a more recent game deals with an issue much closer to home for many: alcoholism.

According to a Mashable article, Papa & Yo deals with alcoholism, but doesn’t force an agenda on the player. One of the main character’s companions, Monster, can be lured to puzzle-solving areas through his love of coconuts. But Monster has a dark side – he has an addiction to frogs and eating them will send him into a rage. Although Monster’s addiction is an allusion to a struggle with alcoholism, the game doesn’t lay the message on to heavily and players can enjoy the game without picking up on the deep intricacies. However, the deeper conflict is available for players who decide to explore its meaning.

“I wanted people to deal with that: a character that is good to you and evil at the same time,” said the game’s creator, Vander Caballero, who was quoted in the article. “I wanted people to deal with that conflict.”

The role of video games in our culture is evolving. They have been used to treat illnesses, and some would even say they have become art. In the next few years, there’s no telling what some video games could become, but one thing is certain: Our favorite medium of entertainment is no longer just one thing. Video games have become a uniquely dynamic medium capable of blending elements of books, movies and art into a single, interactive experience. Like many hard things in life, the chance to quit is always there, but the reward comes through perseverance.

While not competitive, casual puzzle and arcade games have their own ways of testing the nerves. Staring at Ravenhearst’s screen for an hour figuring out a puzzle will fray anyone’s resolve. In times like this, it’s important to embrace the challenge. Easy games are boring, and there’s always the satisfactory feeling of conquest when a game has been mastered.

Chess, even at its most amateur level, is a game of detail. Countless chess games are won and lost by silly blunders, while others are won by the smallest shift or weakness in an opponent’s position. Either way, it all comes down to the details.

The key is to “see” a game rather than just playing it. Each game has its own style, and it’s important to spend a few minutes seeing what that style is. A big problem is that many people want to rush through games. When they do, they end up missing important details and later throw their hands up in frustration and complain about a broken game.

While there’s no such thing as a perfect game, many headaches could be avoided by being observant. In short, successful gaming is always about finding a method to the madness. Chess is not a game which rewards a random approach. There are overarching principles and applications which are inherently superior to others.

All successful games work on “systems.” Basically, there are sets of rules which decide what can and can’t be done. In addition, they also dictate what should and shouldn’t be done. For chess, the system is based off of how the pieces move. For a hidden object game, it’s how an item relates to an object, or how a puzzle’s pieces form a working process. The goal of any player should be to find the game’s logic and exploit it for maximum reward.

When it comes to chess. sometimes the best way involves sticking to fundamentals. This could be bringing all weapons to bear and strategically constricting an opponent like a python. Other times, crisp tactical play and sharp aggression will carry the day. There is always a best way of approaching a situation, and the true challenge is finding it.

Having a coherent system is something that every game worth its salt will have in common. A common outcry among gamers is “I’ve tried everything and I cant…” The truth is that they’ve tried everything they’ve thought of. They haven’t tried everything. Know this: every game and puzzle has a logical way of being approached. It may take breaking it down into smaller pieces or an out-of-the-box approach, but there is always an answer to the riddle.

4. Chess teaches planning ahead

One of the biggest flaws that beginning chess players have is their impulse to always play in the moment, without properly setting up a comprehensive plan. They’ll see a move which looks good, and then take immediate action. By five moves in, their position is a cluttered mess. For the remainder of the game, they’ll be one big piñata getting weaker and weaker with each swing.

An experienced player knows that success begins with setting attacks up. In fact, a great chess player will have a strategy already planned out before even sitting down to play. Simply put, the player who thinks 6 moves ahead beats someone who thinks 5 moves ahead.

How does this apply to casual games? All games require an element of planning ahead. Having trouble getting past a Match 3 level? Perhaps you shouldn’t have blown all of your bonuses trying to make it through the early levels. Is a Time Management game giving you fits? Try coming in with a game plan for getting a high score instead of perpetuating the haphazard tactics which you’ve been using.

Know how you will respond to a situation before it occurs.

Chess is an amazing teacher when it comes to games because its simplicity allows us to pick out great lessons for becoming better at it and other games. Keeping these four gaming principles in mind will turn you into a better gamer who will get the most out of play time. Games are fun, period, but they’re even more fun when you’re good at them.

With summer now upon us, we thought it would be fun to do a little compare / contrast between gaming and golf – two highly regarding means of relaxation.

For some people, a relaxing afternoon consists of a sunny day on the links chasing after the ever elusive birdie. Our idea of a relaxing afternoon, on the other hand, is listening to the rain fall outside (we’re in Seattle, remember) while we play through our favorite computer game.

That being said, we wanted this to be fair so we’re going to take the time to put gaming and gold head-to-head to see which is the true master of the casual domain.

It’s important to clarify we’re attempting to identify the more casual game. When we think of casual, we think of relaxation and down time. With that said, let’s tee off…

Learning Curve

To be a successful golfer, it takes years of practice, costly lessons, and innumerable trips to the driving range. Gaming on the other hand gets the average gamer up to speed in a day or two – and all from the comfort of your living room.

ADVANTAGE: GAMING

Physical Strain

Want to play a round of golf? You better be in some kind of shape. It’s likely you’ll be walking at least a couple miles possibly in the hot sun. Nevermind the twisting and turning implored upon your back when you hit the ball. Want to a play a computer game? If you have the strength to operate a keyboard and a mouse, you’re pretty much good to go.

Mental Strain

Depending on the game, puzzles and hidden object scenes can be challenging. However, we’ve all played games that were really easy. That being said, I haven’t run across any golf courses I could just breeze through. Whether teeing off, chipping, or putting, golf seems to always require a high level of mental focus.

ADVANTAGE: GAMING

Availability

Depending on where you live golf may or may not be an option as a year round activity. It’s pretty difficult to play a round of nine in a foot of snow or in the midst of a downpour. Furthermore, it’s pretty rare to hear about someone playing golf at night.

ADVANTAGE: GAMING

Cost

If we consider the base costs of entering into golf or gaming, they are pretty comparable. A nice set of golf clubs likely costs approximately the same as a nice computer. Similarly, a cheap set of golf clubs is similar in cost to a cheap computer.

Beyond the entry costs, however, we need to look at repeatable play.

At most golf courses, a round of golf is at least four to five times the cost of a computer game. Moreover, a round of golf offers no repeat play. Once you’re done…you’re done. Want to play that round again? You better swing by the ATM machine first.

ADVANTAGE: GAMING

Conclusion

While we thought the competition would be much closer, it’s clear by our scientific analysis of casual gaming and golf that the former is the true game of relaxation.

1. Word Zen

Word Zen combines the best of Mahjong with the brain-teasing challenge of a word puzzle. Like Mahjong, the goal is to clear layers of tiles. However, unlike the popular traditional version of the game, you don’t need to match images to do it. Instead, you’ll need to use letters on the tiles to form words. Once a word is formed, those tiles get cleared to reveal more underneath. The game keeps track of your highest-scoring words, so be sure to share your best vocabulary-defying feats with friends. As you progress through the game, you can unlock items for your Zen Garden, which is available for your digital relaxation needs.

2. Hidden Object Crosswords

This part-hidden object game, part-crossword will unite fans of both gaming genres. Although the goal is to find hidden objects on your screen, there’s a little twist! (Isn’t there always?) Before you can find an object, you’ll have to identify the object from a crossword-style clue. Don’t worry if you get stumped, because you can use other words to help you guess the one you’re looking for or request additional clues. The game keeps track of time and how many clues you’ve used, so you can challenge yourself to beat old scores, or compare your success with friends.

3. Word Whomp Underground

Word Whomp is back, and its sequel delivers a fast-paced, gopher-packed challenge. You’re given a set of six letters and must use them to spell three-, four-, five-, and six-letter words. Spelling words will help the gophers get to their capital and claim their land, but you’ll have to help them get there before time runs out. Word Whomp Underground has a few new mini-games, so there’ll be some fresh challenges if you already have Word Whomp To Go. Spelling out special, golden-colored words awards you extra time, so you’ll definitely want to go for the gold. Spelling bonus words also gives your gopher friends bonus acorns, which means extra points for you!

4. Flip Words 2

Flip Words 2 brings back the addictive word challenge game with new phrases and challenges, and even entirely new game modes. You’ll have to flip letters around to spell out words, and the first letter of each word provides a clue to a popular phrase. Your goal is to guess the phrase at the top, so you’ll want to try to use as many different first letters as you can. Practice your word-flipping skills in classic mode, or test your mental might against other players in party mode if you’re in the mood for an extra challenge.

5. Word Web Deluxe

The Word Web Deluxe spiders aren’t as cute as the gophers from Word Whomp, but they are a pretty big nuisance. Link letters to create words and sweep these pests out of your home. Spelling words over bonus tiles awards extra points, so try to get as high of a score as possible while sending the spiders on their way. Be careful, though! If the spiders make it to your icon at the bottom of the screen, they’ll wrap you in a cocoon. Word Web Deluxe has 60 quest levels, but also features a survival mode with an unlimited number of levels.
