Not Too Big A Fan of This Game
I didn't like this game very much.
Good Parts:
Hidden Object Scenes were good. They were a good challenge and fun to play.
The hint recharged pretty fast
OK Parts:
The storyline was average. The intro didn't hook me but the rest of it was pretty good.
Bad Parts
The game wasn't too fun to play.
Graphically the game is poor. The graphics at the begnning are blurry and not much of an improvement afterwards.
For most of the game, I had absolutely no idea what to do. A strategy guide definitely should've been included.
For all the great reviews of this game, this was a real disappointment. I'll skip this game.

Good straight enjoyable SE
When I first played it, the first 2 minutes, I thought the graphics were awful (halo all around the characters), and the hidden object scenes were bad - junk pile. Then I stuck with it, and found there was a lot to do, a lot of stuff to pick up and use and I got into it.
I am glad I bought it as I enjoyed playing this more than a lot of the CEs ( which I must have played to many as they were all getting 'the same old' and was getting bored with them). This reminded me of a couple of years ago type games - the graphics, a lot of interaction, less 'adventure', some puzzles, with slightly different storylines. But in a good way!
There ended up being not that many hidden object scenes which I am thankful for (there was a mixture of photo objects and graphics which I couldn't get used to). This is a decent length game, for once (for a SE)! There is an option to turn the 'glints' off (sparkles) but there were still sparkles for **** scenes. It wasn't too hard to figure out what to do, this is quite an easy game.
There is a map that is available a short while into it but it's not a transporter map.
The story was a bit different and the graphics turned out to be good, once I looked past how some of the characters were 'placed' in a scene and some of the hidden object scenes. Which was weird as some of the characters were quite good, and the cutscenes (the 'captains' deckhand, upstairs outside door was really good). I don't know why you can breathe underwater but you can, I really liked the setting and the story as it was a bit different.
For those wanting a decent length (for a straight SE)- loads of picking up stuff and lots of "doing stuff", this is really good game. I ended up really enjoying it. And I really appreciate it being a straight SE .
B+ for enjoyment factor. Original review, reposted from August 8 2011.

An underwater adventure
I love games that are under the sea! The sceenery is colorful and the graphics look exceptional. Your character needs to talk to the other characters in the game to get hints and find out where to go next. There is a lot of backtracking and wandering around but the game has directional hints available to aid you if needed. This game was so much fun and i really enjoyed it!

Very Good Game
I agree with almost everyone's reviews. This is a very good game that I really enjoyed playing. The story is interesting, there was something really cool about playing the game under water and the mix of reasonable HO scenes with slightly more challenging games made for a good time. I also agree that audio would have been 100x better than the written dialogue. I really liked the bar in Davy Jones' house. I wish there were more scenes there.

Very good game
I like games that are good enough to play over and over. This one fits the bill. It's got a great storyline, and the puzzles are varied and challenging. I rated the graphics lower because of the grimy junk piles and HOS scenes.

Okay for a Catch of the Week
Not bad for a Catch of the Week Special but not a game I would want to invest higher $'s into. I, admittedly, am hard on pirate movies and games and your opinion may differ markedly from mine.
I had some technical issues as mentioned by other's. Also found the hint button to be frustrating and a lot of senseless running around. Dialogue without vo's seemed rather flat. One of the musical scores I heard over and over jangled on my nerves after awhile. I played the first 3 chapters in an hour. Per the walk-through that's halfway through the game, so is short.
The artwork is lovely and some of the music is quite relaxing and beautiful. The whale swimming was just enchanting to watch though it went by too quickly. The puzzles I encountered were not hard.
I think it's a good value at the COTW special and I did get enjoyment out of the 3 chapters I played. Even though I don't have a need to see how it ends and won't be purchasing it, I would recommend it at the sale price for those who like pirate/ocean games.

lots of fun to play
A free map is included with this SE, and it highlights areas which lead you to the next step so it's very helpful! The map and subtle sparkles took a lot of the stress out of the game and eliminated the need for hints.
The underwater graphics were beautiful. I didn't mind the characters repeating themselves, and the helpful "lost souls" added a feeling of community to the game.
HO scenes were delightfully simple, even if objects were replaced on subsequent visits.
A minor complaint, some of the adventure tasks required items that I had already used, gloves, an axe, a wrench, but I had to go find new ones again. Tasks could have benefited from a little more imagination, or at least let us use more the similar items over again. The pesky octopus was a cute addition though.
The adventure itself was nice, I enjoyed the storyline even if I've heard similar ones before, and the tasks made logical sense so there was a feeling of accomplishment after completing something.

Really like this game
Sort of weird being alive at the bottom of the sea but other than that ti's pretty satisfying.
Nice graphics. Sparkles. Fast hints. HO scenes are pretty straightforward and the number of objects is just right. Puzzles were OK, sometimes tedious but there's a skip button.
There's a map that shows you where you are and where you want to be. This feature was nice but inconsistent. Some times the map directs you to a place where there's something for you to do but you have to collect an item from another (that isn't shown) to accomplish the task.

Exciting!
Written Legends:Nightmare at Sea has intense characters to interact with, a Pirate you'll LOVE to HATE and games that challenge you to the edge of your intuition ... but not beyond. The game area is complex but still not enough to get you "lost" and the hiding places are MANY, which makes the whole puzzle extremely entertaining! Watch out for the pearls, though - If you miss even one, you're SUNK (as it were). Best game I've tried and purchased so far. Ahoy!

Pirates of the Caribbean galore!
Prepare for battle against the infamous Davy Jones, captain of the Flying Dutchman... you'll love it, except for a few regrettable flaws in the game.
Likes: graphics, storyline, soundtrack, length of the game, number of scenes to be explored, challenge...
Dislikes: repetition of HOS - even with the same objects to find - and some puzzles that keep coming back...
And then there are the dialogues... I know that some people are hard of hearing or understanding, but there really is no need for repeating every sentence twice or even thrice. Once is enough, and if you really need to be told again what you should do, just click on your interlocutor... or take a look a the tasks page in your journal.
Apart from these flaws, nothing but praise for the dev's ... I especially liked the map, which isn't a spoiler at all, but boy, believe me, do you ever need it to find your way around with all the objects that you carry around - at one moment, I had 25 of them in my inventory - and have to use one way or another to complete all your tasks.
All in all a very good game, which I thorougly enjoyed playing... honestly, I regretted feeling the end drawing near ... so, I may have some seconds, in a while...
