Skip the CE version and get the SE version, review giving you a pro and con list I am so divided over this game it's annoying! So doing my pro and con list to help you decide what you like and don?t like. cons - -That stupid none helpful non informative SG - what was that all about? If I need the SG I want tips on the objective of a puzzle and to have to go out of the game to look at the free walkthrough - What's the point of the CE? -The sounds of a child screaming at being whipped, not the sound of hand smacking (that wouldn't be OK either!) was pure sick and they kept repeating it in one level.( I didn't have a problem with most of the 'dark' theme - I thought it was excellently done.) - I had to skip the fuse puzzle - I never skip puzzles. I'm a LF player, so used to long hard puzzles. When I concentrated on just one number it changed when I moved to the next number. I have played these type games before. Just so annoying. -Non recording of numbers in the journal that I needed for puzzles, was bad and to confuse matters more, gave me 'false' numbers. - pixel hunting for 1-2 morphs in every scene - non contained playable areas, so the backtracking for those door tokens was tedious so ruined a good idea - I had a glitch with one of the body in the morgue, I couldn't read the toe tag, so an hour looking for a non existent item to make it visible was annoying! - Could have had more puzzles, there weren't that many Pros - an actually hard HOPA! - challenging puzzles -non junk pile H O scenes (jumping up and down) - non repeating h O scenes - love the morph scenes, something different and challenging -a long game -some humour ie with the bodies in the morgue, this could have been expanded, especially in this type of game If the sick parts were taken out,(child screaming being whacked) the SG actually gave hints as to what the objective of a puzzle was and it was a walkthrough, the fuse puzzle was fixed, I would have thought it was an excellent game. But because the cons were so infuriating, I don't. The flaws are so bad it really let the game down which is such a shame. And I couldn't say this game was fun, even in the parts I enjoyed. (well it's a dark game, so don't think of it as fun!) An easily A+++ game but cons made it a B+ game. January 5, 2012
Escape from Ravenhearst I was sent the game for BETA testing. I really liked the game -- BUT -- I found morphing unusual. Maybe it is me and I'm not used to it. But I wrote in my review of the game that I thought it would be good for testing for a driver's license for peripherial vision. I had a hard time spotting the weak flashing areas. I had to constantly stare at the hidden object screen to try to catch the item flashing. I did like the game, and it own't keep me from buying it, but I think I prefer Hidden Objects versus little tiny areas flashing that to me were hard to catch. I had to keep using the hint. But I do plan to buy the game. November 23, 2011
An old love not aging well. The original Ravenhearst was my first BFG purchase I believe. I loved the door lock puzzles, the creepy storyline and wonderful graphics. While these aspects are still present they have taken a backset, in my opinion, to cinematics and forced cleverness. I enjoy a challenge but felt that many of the inventory puzzles (where to find/use which item) were impossible to come by logically, forcing the use of the "Strategy Guide" which itself was not terribly helpful being solely pictures. I would have preferred a Hint system that nudged in the right direction and a clear solution in the guide like many of the better games now have. Was this just an endeavor to offer something different? I felt it failed. Never having been a fan of the "Morphing Objects" to begin with to replace classic Hidden Object scenes w/ them was a big disappointment for me. To just stare at a scene and wait for something to catch your eye rather than actually look for something feels like a dumbing down and a cheap way of lengthening the game. The there's the "extra content" of the Collectors Edition. Most of it are additional bits woven into the game that you'd never notice as something special. The only thing that may or may not be worth it was the additional Hidden Object Scenes but I'll never know because to unlock them you must find more morphing in the Casebook and Strategy Guide. This is never made clear in the game at all. Is there Music or Wallpapers? Who knows as I won't spend the time staring at pages waiting for something to morph. The graphics are great, if perhaps a bit over the top gruesome in this one. The cinematics were fun (LOVED Charles) but I believe less money/time spent on them and more on polishing game play, a few more door puzzles, some real extra content, would have made this a far better product. It is a GAME first of all, right? To those on the fence save your money until Standard Edition. November 24, 2011
Thank you for bringing back the creepy factor Not going to lie. I had my doubts about the new MCF only because The 13th skull was not scary and neither was dire grove. (just my opinion). I really did not like the addition of humans throughout the game. I got spoiled graphically from Huntsville all the way to Madame Fate. The effects and visuals especially on Ravenhearst and Madame Fate were ASTOUNDING. This game is beautiful , scary, visually stimulating and loving the new morphing objects. Thank you BIG FISH and MCF for making me a believer again. :) November 23, 2011
Fun Hidden Morphing Object Game!! So far have only played the demo, which finished upon unlocking the lighthouse door. The closing scenes give a glimpse of what's in store if you buy the game. Of course, I immediately bought it. The game had me in its grasp from the get-go. The graphics are excellent, the ease of play is way up there and the story-line has me intrigued. (Being a Ravenhearst fan also helps#. The HO scenes are actually morphing object scenes, another reason for purchase #you are told how many there are to find, and get a useful item at the end). The Strategy Guide is available in-game and keeps your place. Thanks BFG, this game is a definite winner!!! November 23, 2011
Worst MCF game to date :-( I have loved all the MCF games and was very excited when I saw a new ravenhearst mystery. It started out really well, with challenging puzzles. The moving objects took a while to get used to, but I enjoyed the change in play. The graphics and sound is brilliant throughout. Basically everything is great while exploring the first 3 portals, then it all goes horribly wrong. The plotline is pretty weak and convoluted. Supposedly the whole reason you are returning to Ravenhearst is to find out what's happened to the Blackpool residents, however, they are not really mentioned throughout to game. What happens about them at the end of the game when the bad guy has been defeated - no mention. It all becomes about the bad guy and his life etc. It is not worth the money of CE due to there basically being no bonus content - honestly just do not bother, get the normal version and save some cash! Want 50% of my money back - seeing as there is no bonus content then why am I still paying for it?! It is VERY short in comparison to other MCF games, 13th skull, other ravenhearsts etc. It's like they were going along designing this wonderful MCF sequel and then either got bored, ran out of time, ran out of fuding, ran out of imagination or a combination of all. It is so rushed that you lose the lines between him hating or loving you, oh and why are you left to wander around the house at the end? Ridiculous. Makes the bad guy/the story/the game look very weak at the end.- prepare to be a bit disappointed if you are a MCF fan. December 19, 2011
The sudden death of a spectacular game Generally, I consider the MCF series as absolutely outstanding and exceptional in the HOG section. So it was no question whether to buy "Escape from Ravenhurst" (EFR) or not. I bought it and - boy! - was I impressed! Before EFR, I liked "Dire Grove" the most out of all MCF games. The complex story, the high-class music/sound, the videos with real actors, the backgrounds, the morphing objects, everything was a re-invention of not only the series itself, but of the whole HOG genre. I thought it couldn't get any better. But then came "EFR". From the first moment I knew that the developers somehow managed to push the series even further. The atmosphere: super-spooky. I was so terrified with all the screaming and crying, the dark and incredibly sad childhood, the grim cold, and the scary villain that shivers ran down my spine from the very first beginning until the very and. And I loved every second of my goose-bumps! ;) The story itself really gripped me and I liked the fact that you learn something about Charles' motifs. I was so impressed by the villain's messages that I looked the actor up. Dennis Kleinsmith is the perfect choice, his eyes have something evil and equally sad. Absolutely loved his play. Music and sound effects are exceptional as always, and the scenes and backgrounds are beautifully drawn. I understand that the game can be disappointing for some players, though. If you don't like morphing objects, you probably gonna hate this game. Personally, I liked this feature (that's one reason why "Dire Grove" is my no. 1), although I would've preferred a mixture of "classic" HO scenes and MO scenes. Also, some of the riddles were really tough cookies so I had to look the solution up. But overall, "EFR" could've managed to unthrone "Dire Grove" and become my new No. 1, if the end wouldn't have come so suddenly. When I finally opened the last door, I was expecting another gripping level with MO scenes and riddles and wanted to save this last level for the next day. So I quit the game to come back the next morning. But when I returned, I must realise that the only thing to do behind the last door is turning off the machine! What a let-down! That was way too abrupt for me! Although the bonus games play (finding more morphing objects in the casebook) was a nice extra, I can't make "EFR" my new No. 1 because of that sudden end. But of course, I would recommend it at any time. MCF has set new standards in the HOG section, every game is close to perfect. So even when a MCF part is not as good as the others, it still is an absolutely outstanding HOG! My resume: if you don't love morphing objects, move on. But if you love morphing objects, buy it, buy it, buy it! :) November 27, 2011
So disappointed I've played all the Mystery Case Files and loved them all. But this is just peculiar - the morphing in particular. My brain doesn't work that way - I have to see the word for an item then look for it. I didn't even finish the demo - to find the morphing objects I had to wait for the hint to recharge, it was the only way I could see these things. Many other reviews love this idea, but I found it difficult to see and almost impossible to find. There was no point in going on with the game, it was too frustrating not to be able to do the basic thing - find the hidden objects. On the plus side the graphics are really good. Although with any game what I hate with a passion are voice overs that can't be switched off. I AM disappointed with this, I was so pleased when I saw it. What a pity there isn't an alternative (like some games will have match 3 to switch to if you don't get on with hidden object) so that for those of us who can't even see the morphing objects we could at least play the game. Sorry to be so negative, but I notice other people like the game very much and I'm in a minority here! November 23, 2011
Brilliant game, something new... A brilliant game for graphics, design & technical. As always from BFG Studios, devs bring something new to the genre. Here, it's morphing objects (MO's) to replace flat, static standard hidden objects. Some (like me) will love the MO's. Others may find the change displeasing. What I want as an adventure gamer "Escape" delivers: a challenging experience; a great storyline to follow on the "Ravenhurst" classics; an eerie, ghostly atmosphere & no (IMHO) boring HO searches constantly interrupting the story flow. I love the MO searches! Besides this style offers lots of time to appreciate the game's beauty, some of the MO's are so skillfully made that the challenge to find them brings great joy. Built-in CE bonuses are fun & Strategy Guide is amazing: no words or texts, all pictures! For its long, involved story, the fantastic graphics, & great gameplay & immersive environment, IMHO "Escape CE" is worth every penny and more! November 24, 2011
I say, MCF is BACK! Me and my wife are great fans of Hidden Object Adventure games and we always play them together. Here's what we thought about this one... I give you... the Good and the Bad and the Conclusion: + Stunning visuals and smooth animations + Really challenging and elaborate + The mood that the sounds and the most detailed scenes create + Very interesting story - Morphing objects / lack of hidden objects THE CONCLUSION: First of all, this game really isn't for kids or for the faint hearted ones! It can be very qrotesque, disgusting and frightening for some. Me and my wife sure had our own scenes where we really didn't want to return. But man, is this game great or what! The story is very strong and interesting. Finally there were some really great challenges that forced us to stop playing for the evening and start again with a clear mind next day, just to get further in the game. Like I said, the theme really isn't for everyone, but we didn't get bothered by it. The sounds might cloud your mind a bit though sometimes. The scenes has that strange way of making you feel growingly anxious. The game mostly is very disturbing and horror themed, but there are some surely funny moments too. Unfortunately, we just go to the group that doesn't really fancy the morphing objects. We prefer the hidden ones. We just sighed everytime those came up and felt it slowed things down and took some fun out of it, hence the small minus in fun factor rating. I think morphs are fine as a bonus, like this one has inside the notebook, but wouldn't want them into the actual game. Oh speaking of notebook, don't expect pretty much any help or clues from there. All in all, it is an amazing addition to the series! If the theme just hits you, you'll be spending many hours with this one. ps. stick through the credits for some fun footage ^^ November 27, 2011
