A Wonderful Story Third in a series of Dark Tales games, this is one of the best. Quite long for a standard edition, and very captivating in mood and storyline. Although this is a well known tale, as are most of Poe's stories, this one will captivate you with how it is told adding a new and refreshing angle. No longer are you a spectator, or mere reader, this time you are part of the story. Filled with intriguing puzzles, and beautiful hand-drawn scenery, this game will keep you playing! No hint button so more challenging ERS has adapted another Edgar Allen Poe story into a game & as ever it has sublimely beautiful artwork in the main scenes; it is the little touches I like, a ribbon tied to a door blowing in the wind, a little bird hopping about. The artwork was let down by some badly drawn items in the Hidden Object scenes & there were some odd choice of names in the list of things to find. The usual type of mini puzzles crop up & these were reasonably easy to solve & in addition there are 33 roses to collect; I always love having this type of extra. The story is set in France & the music suits the location, the background sounds are also excellent as are the voiceovers. The dialogue is clickable for those who prefer to skip through. There are two modes of gameplay; in easy the hint recharges at 1 minute 15 seconds & there are sparkles to mark H0 scenes & areas of interest. In the harder mode the hint is 2 minutes 30 seconds & no sparkles, just the odd glint very occasionally. It took me around 4 hours to play; without a hint button I had to think more about where to go & what to do which made the game very interesting. You do get a notebook that gives some clues. Good story & satisfying ending, now I know why I collected all the roses November 27, 2011
Another Outstanding Allan Poe The third is so good and challenging as the other two. It does not happen in all serial games. You feel inside the very good story, plenty of puzzles, with awesome and crisp graphics, nice sound, great atmosphere and amazing characters. I love the irony and charming of comments in certain scenes ! January 7, 2012
A mostly solid HOG adventure I am pretty fussy as to what I spend my money on and I would say this was fairly typical of the genre. That said, I like ERS games and for the most part this one was well worth the purchase, at least the SE version anyhow. Using no hints, skips or walkthrough, the SE version took about 5 hours. Artwork, sound, and voiceovers were typical for ERS - which is to say pretty decent. Story was nothing too deep but held together til the end. The more of these you play, the harder it gets to find one which is truly original and worth your time and money. There were the usual localization issues with some hidden items just NOT being what they were labeled to be but since there seemed to be no penalty for tons of clicks you will eventually find them all. No hints were used. Puzzles were middle of the road. Nothing too challenging. I always like to play on hard/ expert mode and in this case, lack of sparkles to indicate there is an HO scene present can lead to missing some and requiring a lot of backtracking and pixel hunting to find an item you will need to progress later on. Overall a pretty nice HOG adventure. November 15, 2011
pros and cons list - good game not great ERS knows their formula and have stuck with it. That is a positive and negative thing for them. While this game is good the formulaic style leaves me a bit bored, I know what to expect and I get nothing new or exciting. But that is ERS for you- you know what you are going to get. Which is why I don't give any of their games an A as you have to do something out of the ordinary and push yourself to do an exceptional game instead of giving us a good solid B game. pros - collecting roses nice touch for a SE and if you get all the roses makes the game plot at the very end slightly better - romantic plot - couple of medium puzzles, they usually have all easy puzzles -no sparkles on my setting cons - - I just don't like their washed out graphics which they love - A bit glitchy - sometimes the 'eye' wouldn't pick up on a HO scene and had to be very accurate on a non accurate area (ie at end there was a big expanse of grass for a HO scene but if you didn't hover over it in the exact spot you wouldn't know there was one) - Also had to exit the game to get one of the puzzles working - The junk pile hidden object scenes - all of their scenes were this way. While a couple of items in it is interactive most other DEVS are at least doing a few non junk pile HO scenes as well as being interactive (ie doing something in a scene to reveal an item) - puzzles are always on the easy side with ERS they need some more that are a challenge. If I pick a harder setting to play then the puzzle should be harder as well. - opening with broken down mode of transport (and there have been a few carriages in games) it just gets old and a bit predictable and boring January 6, 2012
I like Edgar Allan Poe, BUT--- Great story line, but like so many new HO games, the writers leave you stuck in one location with no clue as to where to go next, and hiding a black object in a black shadow shows a lack of ingenuity. November 16, 2011
Brilliant crime detective game For lovers of crime murder mysteries, the Edgar Allan Poe games are the most enjoyable! I love how the detective looks at you as if you are actually there in the game. There are different challenges, not just hidden object, so the game keeps you entertained for longer. Enjoy it as I did. November 14, 2011
Dark Tales:Edgar Allen Poe This is to cover AL of this great series as many of us hav read the books & the games have ALL been top class & popular with us die hard HOG players, the storylines have been No1 & very well done,my only down comment is that like most games now a lot of needless going back & forth for one item to go back where you were to use it,this is obviously done to make game appear longer but with this series NOT needed, the game itself is enough & as I usually buy CE version the length is great without this needless part to it so hope in future this will be made more practical, nice creepy games Kudos to developers November 14, 2011
Wow loved this game/story line Edger Allen Poe's Premeture Burial was a great game. I played it on expert level and it was not difficult; and not to easy. The story line is great and the interaction(talking) of the investigtor was great, matter of fact I feel the speaking of the investigator was an integral part of the game. Not too much talking and not too much reading. I would recommend this game to everyone! November 16, 2011
Love the Dark Tales series! The Edgar Allan Poe series is awesome and I think ERS does such fantastic work. I did the more difficult level (no sparkles, hints take longer) and struggled a few times, played the game a few hours for several nights and feel this game was totally worth the $$, it seemed to last a bit longer. Lots of walking back and forth but that is ok with me, beautiful music and graphics as always, good storyline and characters, skip options, all in all I think this was an awesome game, thank you ERS.
