Dark Tales: Edgar Allan Poe's The Premature Burial 4.4 5 141 141
Enjoyable! I enjoyed the "poetic" narrative throughout the game, the journal is humorous and the detective tries to add some jokes along the way. The game was fairly well-done, puzzles were original and just challenging enough. The music was excellent, I enjoyed the piano, violins and accordions with a touch of France. HO scenes needed work, the colors were washed out and some were border-line junk piles. Some of the scenes inexplicably required you to find items in a certain order or you weren't able to click on them. However, items weren't replaced after you've found them and the scenes were somewhat interactive. I was halfway through the game before I realized there was no hint button! But after that I found myself stuck quite often and had to resort to the walkthrough. Even though the storyline followed an often-told save the girl format, it was compelling and addictive with some twists and turns. November 17, 2012
Find the premature buried girl - or will the ghost be there first? Somehow I missed this game when it first came out and was surprised to find a third one during a recent sale. Review based upon completion. This is the third spin on a classic Edgar Allan Poe tale, this time it's - Surprise - The Premature Burial. In the original there's a narrator from the ego perspective, no love story and no Auguste Dupin. As usual I have to say that I do not like literature being tampered with - in this case I can kinda forgive it since I was not familiar with the original story. The Good: + graphics + introductory video + game length The Neutral: o somebody please tell the person who speaks Dupin how to pronounce "Monsieur" o some very strange pronunciation of French names from the other voiceover artists The Bad: - interactive clues in HO scenes not always clear - in a few occasions senseless running around since you don't know what to do next Bottom Line: Another well done part of the series. Kept me up past bedtime I started playing this game last night intending to stop halfway and go to bed, but there was always one more task to do, one more puzzle to solve, one more HOG... and I ended up finishing the whole game. This is a testament to how well the game is structured (a trait of all ERS games); you always have something to do (use inventory item, solve a puzzle or hidden object scene) that doesn't require much backtracking and you open up locations at a good pace. The music is good, and I liked the art (although it was a little washed out), however it's very much like the music and art in previous games by ERS. I really enjoyed the puzzles. There was a good variety of them and they were more difficult than average for a HOG. I took some time to some of them, but I was never stumped or frustrated. August 22, 2012
Great Game!! I can honestly say that this was indeed like a mystery for me at first. I figured out who the ghost was waaaay before I even made it to the town. I'm not gonna spoil it but overall it was a very great game. You may get frustrated though like I did. But after I turned the game off at night and sat in my bed, I used to think about the game, kinda like you would when you take breaks from reading a novel. I used to sit and think.. "where haven't I checked yet?" May 16, 2012
Fun game Such a fun game, loved it. It's definitely my favorite one out of the series with a good balance of adventure/HO/puzzles. Great story, graphics, voice overs and play. Highly recommend. Black cat and Rue morgue were bugged down with a lot more hidden object games which i didn't care for....I like balance and get burnt out on pure H.O.s April 1, 2012
Totally absorbing I liked this game a lot. The puzzles were nicely spaced, and balanced between hidden objects, and brain teasers. There are were some times when I seriously wondered if the persons who make the hidden object scenes speak English, and if maybe the translations are difficult for some of the objects, but there were relatively few in this game that were problematic. Some of the interactive elements of the hidden object scenes were difficult to figure... i.e. use this piece to dig at some unrelated space to uncover what you are looking for. Thankfully the hints were easy to follow. On the whole, this was a solidly good game with a truly engaging story. January 31, 2012
Definitely one of the better HO games! Being based on EA Poe makes for a great storyline, so this is a VERY compelling and satisfying game in that regard.. The HO scenes were pretty forthright for finding stuff, but I liked the items that required an extra step. Not quite as simple as most so, even though you might be able to pick up an item, it required a little thought as to how to use it. There wasn't a LOT of running back and forth, but I did miss a HO scene and had to use the walkthru to figure out where the wrench was that I needed right at the end. The SE was relatively short, but it was a good enough game that I was anxious to get through each step just to go on to the next. Will definitely recommend! January 26, 2012
Long and Thorough This series is truly ERS at the top of their game. I?ve played all of the games in the ?Dark Tales: Edgar Allen Poe? series and they have been fantastic. For a Standard Edition, this game is long and thorough. Everything feels complete and thoughtful. The graphics are good and there are a lot of locations to visit. Just when I thought the game was ending it kept going. You truly get more for your money with this series. If you?ve played the others, then you don?t want to miss this one. Some people don?t like the odd animated characters, but I think it?s rather humorous along with the voice acting which is fine. The characters in their games are always entertaining. I was able to do the majority of the game without the walkthrough, but I did have to check a couple of times. I did use hints for the hidden object scenes. I?m looking forward to the next in the series. I just wish that all of the ERS games were this rigorous. January 18, 2012
Beautiful, Immersive Game Great storyline! Great mix if HOG and puzzle-solving. One thing to note is that while the puzzles are fun, they are not super-challenging. If you are looking for a really tough game, this probably isn't it, but if you are looking for a medium-hard game with beautiful art, and a totally immersive story, this one fits the bill. OVERALL A VERY GOOD GAME We enjoyed the game it was somewhat challenging, the graphics were excellent, the only negative thing was in the hidden object scenes some of the items you were to find were not what they actually turned out to be after having to use a hint in order to find the item, some examples are as follows, a comb turned out to be a brush, a bowl was a goblett and a bone was a skull to name a few, just be aware that you have to think outside the box and sometimes that doesn't work and you'll end up having to use the hint button but I still would recommend the game December 5, 2011
