Stand-out game of 2011 (Subjective!) If you're not too fond of HOS kept to a minimum here) but enjoy puzzles and exploration/adventure, this is the best game since Nightmare Adventures: The Witch's Prison (IMO stand-out game 2010). Apparently new devs but excellent game. This game also has an appreciable bonus play content; by that point every bit of extra time is very welcome. Enjoy and look forward to more games from this source. December 13, 2011
Long live the crowbar! This is the first HO Adventure where I got to keep my crowbar until the very end of the game! It's a first :). Exceptional graphics, interactive HO scenes were not tedious and gameplay was flawless. Loved the humour and the storyline was interesting although not totally original. The puzzles included all my favourites with some that had me really scratching my head. Solved them all in the end and the game took me 9 hours. Wow great length for this type of game. I really look forward to more games from this new developer. December 11, 2011
Not a fan I was probably a bit jaded by the poor quality CG in the opening sequence, and the 20-second loop of music in the first room, but this was really not of the quality I was expecting, given the amount of advertising it received. The Hidden Object Scenes were interesting, but I ended up skipping the majority of the puzzles, simply because the hints on how to solve them were completely unclear. For example, one hint was, "Find the correct sequence." What sequence? How will I know if it's correct? The story was also quite fragmented, so it loses a star just for that. People were talking about characters I hadn't met yet, doing deeds I didn't know about, for reasons that were unclear. Overall a disappointing title. December 31, 2011
Strategy Guide Overhaul Game was excellent for graphics and color. Story line was excellent. Just might buy game later after holidays. Christmas presents to mail out and a birthday this month (great grandson) and a birthday next month (grand daughter) and an anniversary( daughter- 18 years). It was hard in some spots and cursor froze. ( can't post in forums anymore). The game was spell binding and captivating. Everyone should try it. On some occasions built in guide became handy but guide needs some improvement. Sound was great and I loved the music at a lower volume. I recommend all should try the game out before purchasing. It definately needs more time for trial period as some of the puzzles were hare to figure out. Good luck and happy game playing fishies. December 4, 2011
This is EXACTLY what I've been waiting for! I....LOVED...THIS...GAME! 9: The Dark Side CE is the most skillfully designed game I have played since being hooked by Big Fish. Where to begin: Graphics - superb, HOG's - just the right amount without hitting "HOG Overload", Mini-games - absolute brain-torture delight & of course there are all of the elements to make this a CE game: Long, satisfying Bonus Play, Challenge Level options, Smooth voice-overs, Strategy Guide (if needed!) & even a choice of language. PLEASE MAKE MORE GAMES LIKE THIS! I didn't want the adventure to end... December 11, 2011
A good game! '9' has one of those basic story line which pretty much works every time: you're the person who has to save the world -- or in this case a town. Called Prague here but it could be a lot of places really. I found the introduction a bit confusing but it doesn't affect the game and the story then develops well. My slight problem was with the title. Al the emphasis about defeating the 'dark side' has too many overtones of Star Wars! But there are no light sabres. The visuals are very good. I liked the way that the HO scenes blend into the general scene when completed. Also, that they include objects you have to perform another action to get. However there are plenty of other things to find which help you on your way, so it's not just HO -- each of which you get to play just once. One thing I didn't like was the background music. There was one particular extremely irritating theme with rising notes which eventually made me turn the music off. That's a pity, because one of the strengths of the game is that all the different people you meet (funny, there are 9 of them), have excellent voices, all different and appropriate to their characters. The minigames are nicely placed and you don't have to wander round for ever looking for things (although I did go through the wrong doors of the hall several times). I played on the 'advanced' mode (there are three but I can't be bothered with really hardcore, I want to have fun). All in all, a good game and fun to play. And, from the ending, this will be a good CE version too -- the extra is really extra and doesn't detract from the main game. I don't give it 5 stars because of the music and because a game has to be brilliant for me to love it. January 13, 2012
Very Enjoyable HOG! Good graphics, good audio and lots to do. The mini games were either hot or cold for me. Some were fun and very challenging, but some made me glad I could skip them. Overall, it's a pretty good game, but not for the novice or easily frustrated as I found even the strategy guide could be very vague, especially about locations. December 6, 2011
Nutso Puzzles I wanted to like this game, but in the end, just didn't enjoy it that much. Played on advanced. Graphics were great. Voiceovers suited the story and were done reasonably well. HOS were really nice. No clutter. Detailed images. Only knock on HOS were found items were not completely marked off the list. They were just grayed out, which blended with the white open items. The storyline was pretty good until about 2/3 of the way through and I began losing interest. The biggest drawback was the difficulty of the puzzles. Unless those who have reviewed this game already are members of Mensa, these puzzles are "hard". Hint system was borderline worthless in some instances. Bonus chapter was long enough, but given my annoyance with the puzzles by that time, I just wanted to get through this and go onto something else. May try it again on the first level and see if that makes any difference. I do recommend it with reservations. December 31, 2011
WOW! WOW! WOW! Oh Yeah and WOW!!! This game is one great play. The storyline is interesting. The graphics are gorgeous. The voice-over is great with an intermittent chilling laugh while actually made me laugh. The HOs are above average. The puzzles for the most part are doable. I found 2 that were a big challenge and time consuming, but you do have a skip button or the SG to help you complete it. You receive achievements which I think are a fun bonus. The game is fairly lengthy. Took me about 5 hours I think. And this is definitely a game I will play again and again. I love a game that really makes me think and work to complete and this one did that. Can't wait for the next one. I highly recommend this game. December 28, 2011
Oh, So Much Fun! This has got to be one of my favorite HOGs ever! Okay, the story wasn't particularly amazing but it's better than just okay. The voice acting wasn't awful but it could've been better, some actors were better than others. The things that make this game great are the mini-game puzzles (there are a ton of them!), the achievements that you can earn while playing, the scenery (ranging from an old castle to underground caverns to a creepy church and cemetary), the three levels of difficulty: Normal, Hard, and, my choice, Hardcore! Also, something that I have never experienced while playing a casual HOG, there was a moment when something (I don't want to spoil it too much for those of you who haven't played it yet) lunges at you and I literally jumped back in my chair! Highly unusual for me, as I'm partial to some pretty scary horror games such as Amnesia: The Dark Descent but I digress. Anyway, as far as the hidden object scenes, they aren't as numerous as they are in other HOGs but I don't really like having more hidden object scenes than mini-games. I think it was the perfect balance, however, they were somewhat easy, for me anyway. I was able to get through the HOSs in about three minutes. The same cannot be said for the mini-games though. They were not so difficult where I'd get frustrated but they weren't easy either. The instructions were always easy to understand and there is the option to skip them (but why would you want to do that!) The game and bonus chapter took me about six hours to complete. Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience and I got most of the achievements, woo hoo! So, I hope this helps you in deciding if this game is worth the money because in my opinion it is.
