Midnight Mysteries: Haunted Houdini Deluxe 4.5 5 211 211
Another good Midnight Mystery. The graphics as usual are very good. Dark and dreary; however, items are visible. The cutscenes are very well done, and the music quite appropriate. No voice overs and 3 modes of play. The storyline is good, imaginative and adds an interesting touch to the death of Houdini. The HOs are clear with some interaction. I enjoyed the wordplay, for example, "liquid chicken". Made the HOs entertaining. The puzzles were very good with a fair amount of challenge. The game comes with the SG, thus the word Deluxe. A very nice feature. Always nice to know the answer is right there if you need it. Game play was a good length for me, right around my average. So overall an enjoyable and interesting game. The Midnight Mystery games are all very well done, and continually improve. February 5, 2012
Love Scary Games With a Mystery It has a good storyline that takes you to different scenes that get you to solve a mystery through hidden object screens and puzzles. February 24, 2012
Great Adventure/Hog! Wow, just finished, couldn't stop til the end! Story line is great, surrounding the demise of Houdini. Not sure how much is fact, but a great story nonetheless. Keeps you guessing and wondering. A few jump-out-at-you moments, but that's part of the fun. Graphics were great, sound was nice and not intrusive. Not a ton of HOGs, but I like it that way. Scenes were not too cluttered and fairly easy to find. Liked to have to combine two items to make new one, though not much of that. Love the integrated guide. Let's you know what to do next, and I did have to use it several times. Diary is good, too, as I started the demo when it first came out & just purchased on the sale, so had forgotten who some of the characters were. Great fun, decent length, terrific story. Definitely a buy! February 20, 2012
Integrated Strategy Guide Is a Major Plus! It took me several hours to play the game. It is an adventure game with some hidden object scenes. The goal of the game is to find out the truth about Houdini's death and reunite the spirits of Houdini and his wife in the afterlife. The graphics in this game were superb. Some may be disappointed by the lack of voice-overs. Also the ghost figures were very one- dimensional, flat and lacked animation. But I didn't mind any of that. I was impressed by how well the story was researched. I knew that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was interested in spirituality and I have read of Arthur Ford. While I do not "buy" the story as factual, it was an interesting take on a fascinating person. There were a lot of magic tricks in this game as well. As in all the Midnight Mystery games - you find ravens in every scene to increase your hints. You can also find 4-leaf clovers in most scenes. There are 70 total, and if you find 40 of them, you unlock an "Unlimited Hidden Object Game" in which you can choose from all the hidden object scenes you encountered in the game, and this time you find everything. Hidden object game lovers should love this feature. There are various puzzles scattered throughout the game, all are skippable. But why skip them? Most are not too difficult, and if you get stuck you can use the handy strategy guide. I did refer to it a few times when I was stuck. Also I loved the hint feature in this game. When you don't know what to do next, click Hint, and it will direct you with arrows to where you need to go next and what item you need to acquire. So consequently I only used the SG when stuck in a puzzle. All in all I thought it was an enjoyable game, with plenty of game play, and with the integrated strategy guide and bonus hidden object games, a great value at the regular SE price. January 30, 2012
Midnight Mysteries:Haunted Houdini Deluxe This game left me curious about what's happening next.I truely enjoyed playing this one. It's very different from other games that i had played before.Excellent graphics, challenges that leave you scratching your head about what is needed to be done(in my case)HO's that aren't easy to spot quickly. The music and sounds are creepy and on par with the dark atmosphere of this game.If you want a game that has beautiful graphics, excellent sounds, challenges and very different and interesting storyline(plus moments in the game that will make you jump) You definitely shouldn't miss out on this one. Sorry But Not All That Great - More Like Annoying This review is based on about 30 minutes in advance mode. 3 play modes: Casual, Advanced, Hardcore. There is a journal however no map. Inventory items which is at the bottom of the screen along with the goals. The items some of them to be used you have to "drag" them over to the little boxes down at the bottom to combine them. HOS (hidden object scenes) are interactive. For hints you collect Ravens. You can also click on an object to see its silhouette. The hint is also useful outside of the HOS. You collect clovers to unlock unlimited HO. There are mini games. Integrated strategy guide. No voice overs. You click on the ghost dialogue to move forward in the game. There are achievements you can earn. My overall impression of the game: Well for starters the story just didn't grab me and have my attention. I just couldn't get into it to save myself. It just didn't flow really well or make much sense to me. What I played of this not too much wandering around and the journal did keep things up to date. Now the graphics I found to be very well done as they are crisp and nice looking. There's a delightful, foggy "ambiance" in some places, including HOS. It looks like real fog, The HOS: I didn't have much trouble finding the items as I only used a few hints however I did check out the silhouette just to see what it was like and those are tiny. The hint is very slow on charging back up. Mini games: I found to be very easy and repetitive. The skip on this is painfully slow as I was getting bored with these mini games. What REALLY annoyed me about this game was the constant click, click, click on the ghost dialogue to move forward in the game and the click on the object and zooming towards you and then you have to click again to put it in the inventory. Just way too much click, click, click and dragging things for me which was starting to flare up my RA (rheumatoid arthritis) so I had to cut this game off at 30 minutes. Way more than enough for me already. Oh and the SG (strategy guide): Well I didn't need it but just checked out: I do not think the SG is very helpful . It does not follow along with where you are but it also doesn't just go back to the beginning either. Sorry Big Fish but the best I can do with this game is 2 stars Definitely give it a try to decide for yourself though as it looks like most people enjoyed this game however and I sure hope you do too but definitely not for me. Midnight Mysteries Does It Again! This game is as good as Midnight on the Mississippi! I really admire Mumbo Jumbo games. They get better and better. The graphics ans SPFX are excellent. I never think about adjusting the music in Midnight Mystery games. It's so well woven into the entire experience. This is a definite buy! March 4, 2012
Awesome Midnight Mysteries game! This game has amazing graphics & effects. The beginning movie clip was fantastic! You can change volume on music & sound. There is a choice of custom cursors and game modes of casual, advanced & expert. The strategy guide is built in and you can collect ravens in your travels for more hints. There are achievements to obtain and you collecting clovers throughout the adventure gives access to unlimited hidden object scenes. If you click on the word of the object in a scene you can see a sillohuette of the item you're trying to find. Nice plus. The puzzles are challenge, yet fun. There are some special effects that took us by surprise. This game is a collector edition at the single edition price. Great buy and great fun! February 27, 2012
Really enjoyed this one.. I don't normally write reviews, and I've played and finished quite a few HO games since getting introduced to the genre about 18 months ago through Return to Ravenhearst, which still holds a special place in my heart, and is still one of the best HO games I've played. But, I really, really enjoyed this one. I don't know if it was the references to illusions/magic in this game, or what. But, I really hated to see this one end. I thought it had very good graphics. I don't listen to the sound, so can't comment on that. It had some real neat cut scenes which would have kind of scared or startled the kids, had they played it with me. There weren't very many hidden objects scenes, so if you're a fan of a lot of HOS's, then you might not like this one. But, I'm more of a fan of finding objects while exploring for them, and then using them, rather than looking through HOS's. And, I would say this game fits that category. The puzzles weren't too tough, and having the built in guide was nice. I kind of got stuck a few times, or didn't have the patience to keep searching for the next step. So, used the built in guide a few times, and a few hints now and then. But, all in all, an interesting story line and fun game play. I liked it better than a couple of the Midnight Mystery series that I've already played and completed, though they were good too. I also felt like the game play on this one was pretty straight forward. I hate games where you pick up an object and then have to go through like 10 screens to get to the next step, and sometimes there's no rhyme or reason to the steps in the process. In this game, one thing seemed to lead to another quite well. Anyway, thoroughly enjoyed it, and highly recommend it. I wish a sequel for it was coming out today, so that I could play it now:)! Oh, and collecting the 40 clover leafs and unlocking the extra HOS's after you've finished the game is a neat feature of the game too, for those who like HOS's. Though I haven't tried those yet, so can't comment on whether I enjoyed those or not. February 17, 2012
Houdini's Midnight Mystery Worth Unlocking Houdini's the latest additon to the Midnight Mysteries Series, and while it wasn't my favorite of the series, the game doesn't disappoint. Pros: excellent graphics and atmosphere, good puzzles, clear HOS scenes, integrated (and excellent) strategy guide. Cons: Sketchy storyline, some weird game mechanics, and level of challenge less consistent than in previous games. I really felt like this one did not have the story to it that some of the others have had, which made it less intuitive to know what to do next. Overall, I would say this is definitely one to try and a pretty good additon to the series. January 30, 2012
