Interesting game, with a few flaws. Overall, this is a good game. It is somewhat similar to other games of this genre that have come out in the past year or so, but it has it's own twists and turns as well. And, it has the added bonus of not just slapping a bunch of skulls/spiders/snakes/evil things all over the place over and over just in a bid to be spookier than everything else. It's dark, it's a mildly creepy, but not ridiculously so. It may not be creepy enough for some, but I like that it's at least not over the top. The graphics are pretty good, with a few of the animated scenes being slightly less than the rest of the graphics. The sound is okay, though the music can be a bit repetitive and seem overly dramatic at times, given its tendency to do swooping dramatic bits at times where they don't quite fit. (Such as when you're sitting there hunting for things in a hidden object scene.) The storyline is also relatively interesting, though it loses points for making you buy the Collector's Edition if you want the full story. I prefer the Collector's Editions where the bonus levels really are a bonus, not something that gives the rest of the story. That being said, if the non-CE version basically just doesn't involve the extra gameplay and the other bonus features, you won't feel like part of the story is completely missing like you do with other non-CE versions, but it is a nice thing to have. The comments that the player character makes during the game sometimes are a bit annoying ("Holy cannoli!" Really?), and he honestly seems like a bit of a jerk at times as well. How many comments can one make about the place being his, his stuff, his property, he can do XYZ with it if he wants to? Punctuation is really over the top as well, occasionally making you wonder if it was typed out by an overexcited teenager. It's just in text though, not in voice, so they're relatively easy to ignore. In addition to the bonus gameplay (which, like I said, gives the rest of the story), it also includes wallpapers and concept art, so not quite as many bonuses as some other CEs. There are three levels to play at - Easy, Advanced, and Expert. I played the game through in Advanced, but it's not very challenging and could probably be fairly easily played through on Expert by most experienced with these sorts of games. I finished the game in about four hours total. I honestly enjoyed Shiver: Vanishing Hitchhiker more than this one as it was a bit less cheesy to me, but this is still an interesting game which will provide a bit of enjoyment. Whether the CE is worth it or not is something I'm torn on. The extras that came with it just don't seem to be quite enough. It would have been nice to be able to go back through the diary to read over the story and things you collected as you went along once the game was finished, for instance. And it was over rather quickly for a CE as well, even with the bonus gameplay. So I'd recommend the game, but possibly not as a CE. April 3, 2012
the best in a long time like one reviewer has said: this game is like a good book, filled with little unexpected twists. Yes, the storyline initially is similar to many games, but there is something about the gameplay design and dynamic that makes this an original and entertaining and sometimes challenging entry. First of all the voice-overs, graphics and even the music (which i normally turn off in other games) are well done. The puzzles vary, but are mostly do-able without melting your brain. the HOGs are uncluttered, well illustrated and have secondary (and sometimes obscure) secondary actions within them. there are the usual different game modes, from casual (which i play consistently) to 'hardcore'.... on the casual level the hint meter recharges quickly in game mode and a bit slower during HO's. There is no penalty for over-clicking which i personally like a lot. there is also a map and a diary, neither of which i have used much. and you get a flashlight and a camera which lights up when a pic should be taken for more visual info about a scene. As to the gameplay and design: there is always such a subtle difference between a good game and just an average one and it is difficult to define exactly what that is. This game has, it seems to me, been given a lot of thought by the devs....I like "the vanishing" from this series too. You get the feeling of being able to play intuitively... without the next step being too obvious...I don't feel i am being 'led by the nose' as there is just enough challenge and plot twists to keep you intellectually engaged. all in all, I highly reccommend this CE for those interested in the HO/adventure genre. Shiver:Poltergeist Collectors Edition Here we have a game that is hugely entertaining as well as it's predecesor.Excellent graphics, sublime sounds and excellent voice overs.Storyline of this game is dark, creepy and eerily fantastic. The level of challenge in this game it's brilliant you know what you'll have to do.The H.O's as it's predecesor some of the items listed are not so easy to spot which makes this game even more entertaining. That been said :Excellent storyline ,gameplay and replay value. This one is a keeper in my book. I expected better Wow!! Just watched the opening scene, it looks like a movie. 10 minutes into the demo I decided to purchase the CE. I think the writers have hit the nail on the head with this one! Well, that was the start of my review when I started the demo. Quite the disappointment. Finished this game in less than 3 hours. The bonus chapter was extremely short. The story line is really very good and that?s the best I can say for this game. The graphics are ok to good, not great, no real ?art?. The bonus art concept/and wallpaper are ?blah?. Music was subliminal, only noticed when there was a climax in the game play. Very unexpected and creative use of inventory in bonus chapter, a refreshing change from the expected crow bar and screw driver. Good mini games, there was one in the bonus game I haven?t seen before. There was so much potential for this game. Great story, interesting characters, it just fell short, literally. As I stated earlier, when it first opens the video is wonderful, like a movie; I had thought and hoped it would carry through?it didn?t. Overall it was an ok game. Some to and from, no map, interesting ?special effects?, but it just felt like a disappointment to me. CE is too short to recommend for $13.99, I would recommend the SE April 7, 2012
Fantastic! A must for the adventurer! If you like the adventure games, then don't let this one go by. The storyline is good, can't wait to see how it all comes out. Keeps you in suspense. Very different in the fact that you take the pictures of the locations yourself. The items for the HO scenes are blended in just enough to make you have to look carefully for some of them, but not so much that it becomes frustrating. No penalty for clicks. The music is nice also. The developers have done a great job with this game. The first Shiver was good and this one promises to be even better. I love it and will definitely be buying this game. March 29, 2012
The ****** did it!! An excellent supernatural who-dunnit. I had a corking review title but had to asterix it as it would have given away the ending of this superb supenatural whodunnit. Like all good ghost stories it begins with you inheriting an island with a mansion and a creepy past. Why these things dont happen in real life i dont know but if they ever do we will all be very well prepared and equipped to deal with whatever an extremely annoyed vengeful spirit has to throw at us. PLUS:-Audio and visuals are perfect. The music alone is of the highest quality and reminded me of other games like Silent Hill. Sound effects add to the game. Movement is fluid and there is no delay between scenes. HOS are fine, nothing too hard, nothing too taxing. Puzzles are different and present a medium level of challenge. The objects you find are plentiful and you can combine them to make another object which you can then use. The tasks are clearly written down and require some thought to sort, but all are logical. The length is good, i got about 3 evenings worth of play and of course there is the bonus chapter on the Collectors Edition which ties the story up nicely. Nice diary/photo album/story and task list...all easily accessible and looked great. MINUS:- Lack of map which requires a lot of backing and forthing although not a major problem due to the smooth scene change but just stops the natural flow of the story if your busy trying to work out where to go and what to do next; for me an instant travel really helps the continual flow of the story. No hints button. I prefer one of these to the ingame walkthrough, again this is to do with the flow of the game rather than anything else and is just a personal preference. Also the lack of puzzles was a disappointment......the more puzzles for me in a game the better. I love the games which include mini games and puzzles by the bucket load, and that you can replay once the game is over and although you get wallpapers, videos, artwork and the bonus chapter with the CE there is no opportunity to replay anything. the pirate ship game could easily have been added to replay and they missed an opportunity to invent the family tree puzzle game as i loved working that one out! Shame. CONC:- A beautiful game with a stroyline that is as good as it looks and sounds. The very best quality in gameplay and a game that requires thought when playing. It only lost a star due to the lack of collectibles, mini puzzles and other goodies that for me merits the full 5 stars. Highly Recommended. April 22, 2012
LEGEN...wait-a-moment...DARY!!!! Second great game at my most loved series Shiver! Gorgeous graphics, creepy atmosphere, impressive sounds and music. But the best piece for me is the great logical gameplay. If you love Shiver:Hitchhiker - try this one! April 3, 2012
Too many junk pile HOG scenes While both Shiver games are entertaining, I just cannot for the life of me, understand why developers insist on too many HOG scenes, which are juge piles of junk that are irrelevant to game play. This is becoming a pet peeve of mine lately, probably because some developers are really spoiling me by limiting the number of HOG scenes, and making HOG gameplay an integral part of the story, with relevant objects. On the plus side, this game is easy to play, although the SG does not keep your place, which was also annoying. I do llke the use of the camera to keep track of important clues, which was fun, but having to use the flashlight in so many scenes was rather annoying. Overall, this was a good game, but by no means one of my favorites of the year, thus far. Still worth trying before you buy. Happy gaming to all you fishies! April 4, 2012
Far too short and no extras which was a shame First of all I can?t recommend either the CE or the SE. The CE had nothing in the extras other than the usual (concept art, wallpaper, SG) and main game took me 3hrs! Bonus took me less than an hour. But I can?t recommend the SE (apart from super short main game) you need the CE to complete the story. So if you can get the CE at half price like I did and don?t mind all of above let?s look further into the game itself? It is trying to be an atmospheric game and mostly succeeds with this although in the middle it lost its way with this and with bog standard gameplay even the occasional good cutscene got lost. Game opens with a girl at the top of a lighthouse with a fire behind her and a cloaked figure rowing away. Plot is all told by finding notes around the place ? you are having a boring life when you find out you have inherited this old manor in an English island; intriguing opening, lonely eerie manor with only the butler as you arrive. If you want voiceovers you need to keep the music on. Sadly the occasional ?spooky? cutscene and there were some good ones, especially the rare first person ?movement? scenes but gameplay was so boring and bog standard at the middle it was unbelievable. At the very end the plot got interesting and was well done but it actually spelled out the things you didn?t know yet and was a literal cliffhanger so you would want to play the bonus. If you love HOS but hate puzzles then this is your game as there were only 6 puzzles in the main game so it seemed there were more HOS than they really were (14 HOS). Graphics were lovely and sharp sometimes but in HOS it was that faded, hard to see mostly junk pile with only mild interaction scenes which I can?t finish fast enough and that was hampered by the random click penalty. What was lovely to see though, was that the HOS weren?t repeated. Puzzles were easy, one was arcade target, have to look in diary for codes for a couple of others. There are 3 choice of hardness and even the hardest had sparkles on HOS and black bar tips but hint and skip were not available. You can change settings mid game. Sometimes in the inventory there are items that are in a small box ? this can mean either puzzle or you need another inventory item on it. There was no transporter map so there is a lot of backtracking. You can replay the cutscenes in main menu which was good. BONUS Bonus play was in all new area and the plot, and suspense and quality I thought was all good it was just very short. I could imagine if you weren?t playing on hardest setting it wouldn?t be much over 30mins I was daft at one point so took me longer about 50 mins. There were 4 additional HOS and only 2 puzzles. If you can pick up the CE at half price and don?t mind how short it is and above information then I do recommend it to you if you like quite a few straight list HOS and no puzzles and like ghosts and don?t mind in TOTAL it?s only 4hrs. But I was disappointed with bog standard game play in middle, far too short, too many HOS for my taste and no extras and felt like they relied too much on the plot ending to try and make up for it and nothing irritates me more with "having to play CE" to finish the story. Spooky and fascinating! I really loved the dark graphics, altho I found myself having to use the flashlight to lighten things up enough for me to see clearly in some scenes. The HOS were fairly easy, altho beautifully drawn, but the overall story arc and game concept were wonderfully thought out. I found myself buying the game before the trial ended. I think you will enjoy it. March 29, 2012
