Mystery Trackers: Black Isle Collector's Edition 4.5 5 133 133
Disappointing This review is based on the demo only. Mystery Trackers: Black Isle is nowhere near as good as the previous Mystery Trackers games, both of which I own. I was not drawn into the story and the mini games (such as there are) are very simple. On the positive side, as with all Elephant games, the graphics are crisp and clear and the sound is good; however the cursor is sometimes difficult to control. The HOS have the extra dimension of using items from the inventory which can occasionally be frustrating if you've missed the item on the way! I will not be buying the CE but will wait for the SE, see how many levels there are, play the demo a second time and then decide. I'll review the game again. I am recommending the game, as others may not be as picky as I am! As always, it is worth playing the demo to decide for yourself. March 1, 2012
Costly letdown! I really looked forward to this new game...I have a feeling the deveiopers know that their games are highly desirable...and perhaps they rushed this one out....not the great quality i have come accustomed to. The mini games were not that challenging and some were just stupid - I mean, come on, the cardboard animals and shadows you can't even see...kindergarten stuff. No longer will I take it for granted I'm going to get my money's worth or mind challenge by buying an Elephant game.... too bad. March 20, 2012
Excellent HOPA! Hit right on target ! Intro already holds you ... Sarah, a reporter, disappeared near the Black Isle Hotel, taken by a masked man. Gorgeous graphics, appealing and exciting plot, immersive atmosphere, excellent sound, totally appropriate to the story. Characters that create curiosity in this very well-developed game. Highly interactive game, in all the places there is much to do and collect, including HOS, that despite being easy, are enjoyable - you need to use inventory items. The amount of HOS is very well balanced and in different locations. Several great mini games, some known but with something extra, and some new too. Besides all, you have to collect 50 owls along the way - and is not always easy to find. Hint is very helpful - good assistance to the next step. It has a map too. Although not very challenging, it is extremely entertaining and definitely goes to my collection. March 25, 2012
UGH I've run into games that I've disliked before, but I seriously hated this one. If I had to describe this game with one word, it would be "FRUSTRATING". Normally with HOPAs, there is a sort of system of reward involved. You come across an obstacle, you look through your inventory and have that "a-ha" moment of realising that a certain item is to be used there, you use it, and are then allowed to move forward in the game. There's a feeling of accomplishment that makes you excited to keep going. Not so with this game. It seems like every puzzle I came across just led to another puzzle, and that only led to a HOS where I get an item that is NOT what I need at that point. I felt as if I were getting nowhere the entire time. There was no feeling of accomplishment after completing difficult puzzles or opening locked doors. Part of this was because of the sheer tedium of it, and part of it was because I guess I just didn't really care about what happened to whatsherface- the storyline did not move me in the slightest. Speaking of the storyline, it's hardly compelling. It might have been good had it been handled differently, maybe gone more into what the antagonist suffered through so that I could see why I was supposed to feel sorry for him. As it stood, though, I couldn't have cared less what happened to Ms. Reporter- she kept telling me to leave her, why am I still here? I'd rather have just let the baby have her bottle. I simply could not get invested in this story, because there was so little to get invested in. If I had to say something good about this game, I guess the graphics are up to par, although any stinker of a game can have a flashy exterior. I was also puzzled by the fact that there was even a slider for music in the options, seeing as how there is absolutely no music for about 98% of the game. I'm one who appreciates good music in a game (helps create an immersive atmosphere), and this might have contributed to it falling flat for me. The fact that this game alternated between crippling boredom and maddening frustration for me was even more of a disappointment than it might have been on its own, due to the fact that the previous two games in this series were amazing. Another Raincliff this ain't. No offense to those who enjoyed this game, as there appears to be a great deal...But I just could not find any redeeming qualities in it. I can only hope that perhaps the next Mystery Trackers will make up for what this one lacked. May 26, 2012
STUPENDOUS!! This game was a true collaboration of artistic genius! The graphics were some of the best I've seen! The waves of the ocean were just phenomenal! The videos, the live actors, the animals were all such an extraordinary touch that just enhanced the game play! The accompanying realistic sounds enhanced the ambiance, and added to the pleasure of taking ones time to finish this game. The puzzles, my favorite, were a treat, and graciously spread throughout the main game as well as the bonus round. The hidden object scenes were nicely done, just the right amount of objects to search through. Thank you Elephant Games for making this a truly wonderful series of games that makes one anticipate the next release! March 2, 2012
Lots to do in this game! This is based on playing the demo. There are volume controls for music, environment, effects & voice. You can adjust the gamma, select custom cursor & full screen. Game modes of casual, advanced & hardcore. There are lots of achievements of obtain and you can also collect 50 hidden owls. The owls that we found were of all shapes & sizes. There were also some in the hidden object scenes. There is a map that lists tasks in locations and it's interactive so you can jump from location to location. The hidden object scenes are interactive in the fact you may use some items from your inventory. You can back out of the HOS, which may be necessary to find the item you need to continue the scene! The mini games were not really difficult. There is a lot of interaction in the game to advance in the story. The strategy guide wasn't available so we don't know how many chapters there are in the game. It doesn't seem like we got very far into the adventure as there was a lot we hadn't done before the demo was over. We did use the hint once (to find a needed piece of paper!) and it was useful. The graphics were very crisp and clear. The beginning movie clip got you involved in the story. We are putting this on our buy list, but will wait to decide after the standard version is released. We own the other Mystery Tracker games and this one is just as much fun as they are. March 1, 2012
Boring! While I did enjoy playing this game at first, I did not think it the calibre of the first two MT games; graphics were great, but I actually liked Raincliff the best, for level of challenge, graphics, story, that one blew me away! Played the free and trial and bought this as soon as it came out, but I became more and more disappointed that this was not the usual outstanding MT game. The story just didn't grab me like the first two in the series. It actually got boring after a while; most of the HOS were simple to the point of making me feel like a dolt. There is way too much running back and forth, and I guess that's why they put the map in that lets you transport from one location to the next - I hate running back and forth! I do like collecting morphing objects and when I realized there were owls hidden in the HOS, well that did add a little to the game. Not the level of Raincliff for creepy or spooky; wasn't anything really startling in this game, and I've come to expect that from the MT games. I have to say I agree with everything Ella_2011 said about this game, and I am actually surprised at the number of "expert" players that gave this game 5 stars. The best thing about this game is the little dog you "rescue", if it hadn't been for my little companion keeping me company, I would have gotten a serious whack upside the head when it hit the computer keyboard from boredom. The game almost feels like it was just thrown together, however, I did like the bonus game. I do not recommend buying the CE, but SE is probably worth it. April 2, 2012
Really Disappointed I usually love this series, but I was disappointed by this one. I thought the story was really boring, so lost what I was trying to achieve as I keep losing interest in the game. Some of the HO scene were blurry. A lot of the other puzzle games were to simple, and mostly I have seen them elsewhere. In general it was a very basic game and I would only recommend to beginners. Just Average This game was just so-so, in my opinion. The things I didn't like about it were: Usage of Inventory items was not always logical or apparent. Too much back-and-forthing to get and use Inventory items. Way too many Hidden Object Scenes. These are often triggered by use of an Inventory item and become a tiresome pattern. Hidden Object scenes are not clear and seemed junkish. Mini-games are either very easy or very difficult. The Hint button gives away too much information. I'd rather just be pointed in the right direction, not told exactly where to go and what to do. Nothing about it was "fun". The storyline didn't grab me. March 24, 2012
would buy again I prefer hard core. I only had to hit the strategy guide once because I was tired. Puzzles were challenging in new ways. They were doable but not boring. I enjoyed the bonus play at the end but am on the fence as to whether it was worth the CE price. I loved the map. I felt that it definitely made the gameplay quicker without enduring the boredom of retracing steps (The map has a jump feathure) Loved that part. I wish that hard core didn't have sparkles. HOS still sparkled. This game has a desirable balance of difficulty stop and think and keep moving. I do not judge the sound as I do not prefer sound. It is usually annoying. I always try to have sound on at the beginning but ususally turn it off. Video is a waste for me as well. Graphic A+ Fun A boredom none challenge A Rediculousness 1 (for video) March 15, 2012
