I don't understand the hype... For me the graphics of the game were just terrible. So bad that it made the hidden object scenes very very challenging. The look of the game is very fuzzy. I have played many other games that looked better than this one and I know that it is not my computer. I was so dissapointed with the graphics that I could not even stand to play the game for more than 10 minuets. It is a shame because I was really hoping to enjoy the game since the story seemed interesting enough. March 16, 2012
Not as good as the previous two The series that started with exploring a small town moves to a fairly standard creepy mansion, which as usual is full of doors that open when you insert some object you picked up four rooms away. How the people who live in the mansion get around the place every day is hard to figure. Maybe that's why you only see them in occasional cut scenes, even though the place isn't that large and you are backtracking through it constantly for a few hours. There's a fair amount of that sort of absurd adventure game logic, here, in general. Sometimes you need a special tool for a job that you could obviously do with your bare hands, but then in the next moment you'll be such a Macgyver you can fix something just by throwing a dirty old chain at it. The plot has some serious hiccups, including a spectacular crash that happens right in front of you and yet injures no-one. (Your character actually expresses urgent concern for the victims, but then forgets all about them after the crash scene turns out to be a hidden object jumble.) The characters who periodically appear in cut scenes are tolerably voiced and add some interest, but they appear and vanish abruptly and are otherwise nowhere to be seen, even though they are supposed to be around doing stuff just like you. The bottom line is that this is an unusually non-immersive game even for a HOG adventure, despite its quite good production values. It looks good, but it reminds you again and again that the plot and setting are really just excuses for a series of mildly challenging puzzles. Otherwise it's a decent enough game, and may be worth getting if you liked the two predecessors and want to see the story continue. March 17, 2012
2.5 - good for a DD REVIEW OF FINISHED GAME - I don't do like or love but out of 5 for each aspect, so I didn't dislike this game. I'm surprised this is less than a year old as it looks so much older with the graphics. It is typical fare, darkish storyline (at end) nothing new re plot, or gameplay and this game I will not remember. It's not bad at all and I liked most of it, it's just about average but the graphics let it down. I love the type of graphics they are trying to do - clear and sharp but it just looks old. There are three modes of play which thankfully you can change midgame. I thought the choices were weird as if you don't want sparkles you have to play with no skip or hint button which is hardcore and that's daft, you should be able to play with no sparkles in middle mode. The hardcore still has auto tips on puzzles and black bar tips which is bad. There is no transporter map, just a map in the journal which annoying sparkles when it's updated. The map does have "i" on it when you can do something in an area. More at the end there is a fair bit of backtracking but it's about medium and not excessive. There is voiceover but the characters are static in the dialogue scenes but move in the cutscenes. There are 15 tapes you find in the game (like the last game in the series) but these are obvious and not collectables like how you think collectables are as they are obvious, you can play them in your diary and can do things while you are listening which is good. I do like them as it is a bit different. 30 HOS All list, mildly interactive. There is a random click penalty. I thought they were bad purely because of the very faint or hard to see with some items and most of this is due to the graphics. About half of them I'd put in the junk pile realm. You have to replay most of them - so most HOS you have to play twice. There are no sparkles on the HOS which is good but it's annoying that on hardcore you have to keep checking on the HOS to see if you have to replay them. If they didn't repeat them it would solve the problem! 14 PUZZLES Most were easy a couple weren't but one was just pure fiddly to do. Most were well known - pieces on rings to make a picture, move things up and down - get a green light when in right position, slide to exit. I did like most of them but it all got a bit boring. It's not a bad game, but for today I feel it's just slightly below average but it's certainly worthwhile playing for a DD and I think most would enjoy it. I know I play too many of these games as it's just melding in with the crowd, plot at end been done so many times. I am going back to being a bit harder on games to try and make it clearer what games are standouts. I do prefer less HOS and at least the same amount of puzzles but if you like quite a few HOS and not so much the puzzles then it's a good enough same old game and I got about 4hrs 30mins out of it on hardcore so do recommend it for a DD. Proves games don't have to be CE to be good! I don't get to just sit and play a game through (lots of stops and starts) but when I would come back it was easy to pick up and move forward at a pretty good pace. The graphics were good, but not as detailed as some. The story was okay, but actually I don't pay too much attention to voices unless I think I might need a clue. Loved the cassettes, of course there are always those HOS that you see something you really need, but that's not what you get....keeps you interested, not too much backtracking but I bought the SE, didn't need a strategy guide, walkthroughs are fine except for having to get out of the game (all my games on my desktop so if I'm somewhere where there isn't any WIFI I can still play my games). Didn't find the hint button all that helpful....you get tired of seeing "nothing to do here"....well then tell us where there is something to do! HA. I always read these reviews, but always watch the trial version then make up my mind. There is always something that appeals to everyone. I think it is an enjoyable game! April 18, 2012
A little too dark for me But thats a personal preference, so others may not care. I didnt have problems with graphics they were ok. Story was very long by many standards so you do get your moneys worth for that. I never played the previous games but have no desire to do so just because, over all, i really tired of this game by the end and was just skipping thru mini's just to get on with it. Ending was not very satisfying. 2 stars cause I personally just didnt like the game, but i will recommend it for those who like blood and gore, decent storyline and long game length. April 11, 2012
Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen Before writing this review I paged through the previous reviews. Reading those reviews help me identify just what is so aggravating and ultimately distasteful to people that play many games of this genre. Its as if the developers let anyone and everyone work on this project. There is no overall sense of purpose or direction here. Its a little this, a little that, a dash of something else and other extraneous ingredients. It is neither one thing or an other. It is a failure. It is also vaguely insulting to those who play these games. Did they believe no one would notice the lack of integrity in this production? Where was the chef de cuisine while the other cooks were making hash out of his creation? I would be deeply embarrassed if this "dish" came out of my kitchen. March 24, 2012
As good as the first of the series! After playing the second part (Nightfall mysteries: Curse of the opera) which was pretty bad, I'm happy to find the quality of the first one (Nightfall mysteries: Asylum conspiracy)! Sound and graphics are excellent. Storyline still interesting. The HOS are clear. The puzzles are sometimes challenging. There are 15 audio tapes to find. I needed 3 1/2 hours to finish but it wasn't too short for me! June 17, 2012
I loved it. We used the advanced mode because of the sparkles issue. It was great because when you had trouble with the puzzles, you were able to change the difficulty of your profile without having to enter a new profile. You were able to revert back to the advanced mode. April 1, 2012
Worth It! I just finished this game, and boy did I enjoy it! The graphics are well done and the hints are very fast to reload. I was pleased to see that the character pop-ups, which were a constant annoyance in the previous games, are down to a minimum in this one. Two thumbs up for me! April 17, 2012
Out There Story but Fun Game I played the first two in this series; liked the first, didn't so much like the second, but really enjoyed the third. It had more of the creepy factor of the first game, like something will jump out at you at any given moment. The family tree can get confusing, so thank goodness there's a puzzle laying it out for you. The story is kinda weird, bringing souls back from the dead, crazy experiments, etc, but the game is still a lot of fun to play. Graphics: Really nice and clear. I didn't struggle with any of the HO scenes. Music: I really liked it. Added the right ambiance and I enjoyed listening to it during game play. Options: There are 3 levels of play and I chose the moderate one, not knowing what to expect and just in case I wanted to skip some puzzles. Challenge: Most of the puzzles and HO scenes are not overly challenging. I used the hint button 3 or 4 times during the entire game for the HO scenes. I do admit to skipping a couple of the puzzles, the blood vial one and another one, just because I didn't want to take the tedious time to figure them out; I wanted to get on with the game. Length: A pretty long game. Quite a few hours. Worth the money for sure. Play Again: Yes, definitely. And I'll probably take the time to solve those two puzzles I originally skipped. Cons: The ending. It's all wrapped up pretty quick but I wasn't a fan of the detective giving a "free pass" to the lovers. He must be from Florida. Overall Grade: A- March 22, 2012
