What a Terrific Game! This is exactly the type of game I have been looking for this week: An interesting storyline and dialogue, moves along at a good pace and smoothly, attractive graphics, nicely put-together HOSs (with the usual one-cannot-live-without crowbar), quickly recharging hint meter, no hand-slaps for misclicking objects. The absence of monsters, goblins and ghouls was absolutely refreshing (OK, there was a lame ghoulish person or two, but they could totally be dealt with.). Are there any negatives? Why must scenes be so dark? Even with an option of "extra brightness" many scenes could be lighter. My only other objection is to the number of critters running through the scenes: mice, bugs, etc. I saw a beautiful cat or two though, so that's always a good thing. I like this game very much and think you might too. So much better than many of the games I've seen lately. March 15, 2012
The Best HO In A Long Time I just finished playing the 60 mins trial, and this game flew to the top of my list of games to buy next! It has beautiful graphics and the storyline is engaging. It left me eager to purchase and finish the game. For a long time now, the HOG's I've been seeing have object lists that are just too long. It's as tho the HO scenes have taken on a "find everything including the kitchen sink" nature. The HO's in this game are not too long, nor are they too short. They are challenging, but each of them includes a couple of easy to find objects that keeps me from feeling that I've suddenly come to a grinding halt in playing the game. This game is a definite step up from the quality of HOG's I've been seeing in the past few months. Thank you Big Fish - THIS is the kind of game I expect from you and for the first time in a long while, you've not disappointed me! March 15, 2012
Silent Nights: The Pianist CE - WOW Have only played this for 30 minutes but have already bought it. The storyline looks to be original, the graphics are supurb and the cut-scenes very well done. This coupled with a good musical score and voice-overs make it a must for me. The HOs are beautifully rendered and objects relatively easy to find. The atmosphere is well created and has aready given me a couple of shocks. The game opens in widescreen and has two game modes. I can't wait to find out what will happen in the end and that, for me, makes for a good game. March 15, 2012
good HO game finally a pretty decent HO game. The HO scenes were not over taxing and they appeared when something was picked up so you do not have to actively seek them out. The voice overs can be skipped and the background noise is not overly irritating although there is the constant sound of rain. The storyline is pretty good, although slightly confusing. i found it easier to play with out trying to find a reason for what i was doing. All in all a game i will be getting March 15, 2012
Finally a good game this week! : ) So relieved when after waiting all week for a decent game this one was released. Very nice game. I enjoyed the storyline & the graphics were nice & clear. There is even an option in the menu to adjust the brightness if you like. I think this is the very first game I've played that has had the inventory bar at the top of the screen instead of the bottom. Only one thing I was disappointed about & that was there is no journal or notebook. Other than that I really enjoyed this game. It has a nice even mix of HOS & adventure so no worries about too much of one or the other. For people who don't like alot of dialogue there is hardly any & there are voice overs for the small amount there is & they're very well done. There are 9 chapters but they're very short so I wish the game would have been a little longer but it does have the bonus chapter in the Extras which I had just as much fun playing as the main game. Overall a very good game & judging by the ratings & reviews most everyone else thinks so as well. Compared to the other games this week this is definitely the highest rated one. Was very thankful for it since for many weeks now the general consensus is we're only getting one good game a week now instead of a couple a week like we always used to get from BFG. Hoping hoping hoping that BFG goes back to what we all loved about this site. I definitely recommend this game. Happy gaming :) March 17, 2012
Fun, quality game Pros: 1) Inventory puzzles are logical (rarely do you use a light saber to slice through a gate, or a potted plant to shove open a window, that kind of "wha?" thing that you would never think of on your own). You use, 90% of the time, what would logically be needed to proceed with an inventory-based task. I liked that. 2) The game progressed in a mostly logical way. In order to ultimately save sister, you have to find her, and in this game that means that you are physically moving through a bombed out city (Paris) geographically toward your sister. There is no maze-like hunting for no reason, even if the reason was forced upon you by the devs. I never felt like I was wandering in a totally aimless manner, like so many games these days. 3) The period design of this game is stellar. *Stellar.* I *loved* it. I loved the HOGs because each and every single item in those scenes was true to period (ca. 1946). At least as far as I could tell. I applaud the devs. for their attention to detail, because I know how hard that must have been and they did a fantastic job. 5 stars alone for that. 4) The VO work was good enough that it wasn't annoying. Cons: The only disappointment I felt was in re: the puzzles (mini-games). Some were really fun (meaning hard), but some weren't hard enough for me. The other con was the storyline, which was fine enough, but, I don't know, was maybe not quite developed enough to engage me? Or, it stretched credulity a bit too much? Sorry, I can't put my finger on it, but I wasn't all that engaged in the storyline. Obviously, I didn't care a great deal that I wasn't that engaged, because I still had a lot of fun with this game. Neither pro nor con: The bonus content was good, in that it was more game play, and had some nice detailed touches in how it referenced the main game, but it was difficult to be engaged in it given the ultimate task. Had one very good puzzle in it. Hard to talk about without spoilerfying. Worth it? Hard to answer. Bottom line -- wonderful ambiance; wonderful attention to detail; great idea to set a game in Paris immediately after WWII; nice, logical, immersive progression through the tasks at hand; and fantastic period design work = fun gaming experience. Got better and better At first it seemed a little slow, too many HOS and not enough puzzles. But about 25% into the game that all evened out. The puzzles were good. Not to easy not too hard. I believe I only skipped one. The HOS were just right. The ambience is excellent as well as the story line. Certainly long enough and a good bonus game. The help button is very helpful, I never did have to use the SG. March 17, 2012
Very entertaining. Offers many moments of great fun. Help discover the truth about the disappearance of Yvette, abducted by a mysterious organization. Yes, another story of missing persons, but very well developed and attractive, keeping the interest and curiosity. Many stories can be similar, but when the game brings some innovations and entertains those who like HOPA, it fulfills its role ! Good graphics, outstanding sound quality, many great places to explore and interact, immersive atmosphere. Good amount of HOS, not too difficult, but beware: if you do not want to jump from the chair, do not click non-stop! Well known but entertaining mini games, not really challenging. Even being a good game, I'll wait SE to buy, but it's worth to play the free trial. March 24, 2012
Deja Vu....... After having snapped out of my semi-coma state brought on by playing the trial demo for Silent Night, I have poured myself a very strong cup of black coffee in order to wake up and write this review. Silent Night is basically a rehashing of the usual HOG adventure games that we have now become accustomed to. However, in my opinion, Silent Night does not measure up to standards of the better CE games that we have seen this past month and at best I recommend that you wait for the SE version and save your self the trouble of playing this very slow and tedious game. Believe me when I tell you that I am trying my best to look at the pros of this game and after having read many of the reviews in the forum, I am going to go against the grain and say that for me, Silent Night missed the mark of being a good CE game. In all fairness, the developers (DarkBlue) have added on features that will please many gamers; game options include widescreen, Brighter screen and full screen along with two gameplay modes. There is an integrated SG, voice-overs in some of the dialogues and that is about it. The story is too familiar and simply a case of finding missing person kidnapped by evil-doers set during post war France. YAWN! The only interesting element of the storyline was that the theme was music. You would expect that the soundtrack would have been a highlight of the game but instead was a cachophonic drone that numbed the senses and sent me into a lathargic state while playing the game. On a positive note, I do applaud the graphics, annimations and sound effects, all above standard. Game mechanics includes an integrated SG, the usual puzzles and min-games that I found to be too easy and not to mention that the inventory list is placed on top of the screen which personally I find annoying. I tend to be a creature of habit and an avid defender of what CE games should include and this game doe not offer any of the features that make me want to spend the extra dollars: No map, no journal, no challenge, no collectables and no achievemnts or rewards and therefore no re-play value and unfortunately no buy for me. FINALLY, the one thing that put me off of this game entirely was the lag between the scenes. I hate it when you have to wait for a scene to load, it disrupts your gameing experience and causes you to get very bored very quickly. I wish I could recommend this game because obviously alot of work was put into it. However it is just a bad case of deja vue for me and I will undoubtedly wait for the SE version. Obviously try the demo and I expect that many beginners of this genre might enjoy it. Neverthe less, I cannot full heartedly recommend this game at this price. March 15, 2012
Excellent Diversion I read the reviews, as always, decided to give it a try anyway, and was SOLD on the attention to detail. Each scene was animated, things skittering around, lots of activity, as if it were real. It was a visual delight. I finished the game, and am purposely slowing down on the bonus game (very cleverly done) so I can enjoy every minute. It's been worth every penny. Bravo to the developers. I am looking forward to their next offering. March 16, 2012
