Small Terrors Small Town Terrors has a great look to it and I especially enjoyed the subtle animations which enhance the scenes. I had a lot of fun problem solving my way through town to open up new areas. When you complete an area you move into the next which cuts down on backtracking and makes it possible to take a break from the game between chapters. A task list, a map and a good hint system are available to keep you headed in the right direction. The hidden object scenes are challenging but fair. There is a good variety of puzzles and I found some of them downright diabolical! The cutscenes have a gritty comic book style and they advance and explain the plot. It's the same story I have come to know and love in other games but this one is pretty weak in some areas. Wake up in an abandoned hospital. Travel through deserted town on a rescue mission. Avoid zombies created by evil experiment gone wrong. Sounds great, doesn't it? My complaint is the zombies never posed a real threat. If a laboratory disaster is going to cause a creature fest, don't let me down on the drama, please! May 9, 2012
Contrary to other reviews .... we liked the game! The game starts out with an intriguing cut scene that had us interested in the story. There are volume controls for music & sound. You can choose full screen and custom cursor. There are game modes of casual & expert. There is a "faint of heart" warning at the beginning. There are tabs for tasks, inventory, documents and a map. There is a lot of back & forth in the game, but that adds to the challenge of remembering where to go & what needs to be done to advance in the adventure. You had to collect health packs to get strength for performing some actions. The graphics are good, although lacking in color. Every now & again a movie would add some interest in to the story line. Made it very interesting. There are no voice overs, but minimal text to read. The hidden object scenes are interactive and not cluttered. The first mini game of figuring out the door code was a bit frustrating and took a lot of time from the demo because we didn't want to use the skip option. We did succeed and then the 2nd mini game also was a challenge. At that point, it was decided to purchase the game so there would be time to complete games without skipping and add some fun hours of play to the purchase. There were a couple scenes that had a "jump" factor and were a bit scary. The game is being downloaded as this review is being written, so we haven't finished game play, but will be going there soon to finish that mini game! An actual game credit was used instead of a free game credit so we could take advantage of getting the extra punch on our card. March 18, 2012
good fun game just not up to date Not a bad game to play. There is no voice over. The music is good and the graphics are ok just not the greatest. The HOS are easy but the puzzles can be a challenge. The skip button is very slow. The hint button only tells you nothing here. Has a good flow to the game with out too much running around. You do find thing that are no help in the game. May 19, 2013
Like it. A don't understand bad ratings, it is a nice game. Story = deja vu? Ohh, it is a big deal... Visual quality is really nice, i love it so much. HO scenes are OK. I played with the demo, but after 15 minutes I decided, that I'll buy it. Now is is on my puchased list :) March 17, 2012
good but no great, passes the time was a good story line, pretty easy though and that was in expert level. you can skip mini games and ask for hints throughout i bought and played , is not overly long after demo all in all i enjoyed and it passed a bit of time March 17, 2012
Atmospheric thriller This is the first HOG I've played with a zombie* theme and I was pleasantly surprised. First, let's get the two negatives out of the way. The graphics are ugly. I would have given this game a lower visual score except that the grungy art style did fit in with the grim and menacing story and feeling of isolation. The zombies, while scoring some scares along the way, never directly confront you; this was a missed opportunity for making the game even more tense. The beginning of the game is clearly inspired by "The Walking Dead"; you wake up in a hospital bed after coming out of a coma. Your first thought is to find your husband and daughter. As you find items throughout the game that indicate they have passed through an area, there are brief cut scenes that show you what happened there. This really evokes a feeling of being on the right trail and getting closer to finding them. At different stages of the game, a graphic is displayed showing the current time; this is a movie/TV technique used to great effect here to indicate impending doom. The setting of being an ordinary, small town is, ironically, refreshing and unique in a genre crowded with abandoned houses, carnivals, asylums, medieval and Victorian-era towns/cities. The items that you need to find and use generally make sense. The appearance of the zombies is used sparingly at the beginning of the game, making them even creepier. Making progress to open up access to new locations feels like you're exploring and overcoming obstacles in a realistic manner. The puzzles, while not original, are at that sweet spot of difficulty where they challenge you, but not too much as to feel frustration. Overall, the story and puzzles are more than good enough to outweigh the bad graphics and make this a game well worth playing. * Yes, these are not true zombies because they're not dead, but if it looks like a zombie and walks like a zombie... Definitely worth playing Great game, very addictive and with a great variety of challenges October 5, 2013
Great Game I loved the fact that when you thought it was over there turned out to be more. September 10, 2013
surprising I didn't think that this game was going to be a buy, however I did get hooked on the outcome. I did use a credit but all in all it wasn't a bad game. the challenges were reasonable. It was quite spooky at points. I didn't feel safe when doing the HO's I wanted to keep checking over my shoulder. It is likes the TV series out at present but I think thats adds more to it. Very Nice Nicely done. The tasks and inventory item usage are logical and advance the storyline. What I really liked was that near the end, when you finally escape, the game doesn't just abruptly end. There are still some things you need to do before making your getaway. I also liked the hint at the very end of things to come. This is how you make a winning series. I look forward to the next installment. March 29, 2012
