Under rated Hi everyone, This is my first ever review of a game but have been a long time member of BFG. I've purchased many, many games like this one and I feel so far it is under rated. I played the demo on the most challenging level and I think those that have played many games like this will really like it. It would be frustrating for a beginner for sure but for me I loved it except as mentioned in another review, I don't care for the "pick your question" dialogue. Otherwise it's a great and challenging game. I like to get my money's worth, to figure out how to do things on my own and not have my hand held through the game. Some things in the HO scenes are a bit small but I like that challenge also. Even playing as an expert I found it was pretty easy to figure out where and what to do next without a hint button and there is a hint button in the HO scenes, but again, it's not for a beginner. Thanks for reading my first review! Kim : ) April 16, 2012
Victorian Mysteries: The Yellow Room This review is based on the demo which I played in casual mode. The other option is expert. The music is upbeat. There are voiceovers for everyone except yourself. Your dialogue is the click and choose what to say type. I personally am not keen on that. The graphics are clear but the HO's are very well hidden. There was some interactivity but not in every HO scene. The puzzles are the norm. Your are told when there is nothing more to do in any particular area. You can't go walking off in the wrong direction as it won't let you - it tells you not to go here or there if you try to. There is a journal with separate tabs for story, evidence etc. There is a separate tasks book. There is a map which will tell you where you are and shows areas of interest but you cannot teleport. You can also refer to your tasks from the map. I used the hint once and it seemed to take a long time to recharge. I think it is on a par with the first VM (not a sequel) but in my opinion the devs have not improved much, if any, in this game. Pretty much the same game play. RE approx length - the sample version gives you the first chapter depending on how fast you play. I completed the sample in 35 minutes. There are 5 chapters so if all chapters are of similar length then for me that would be approx 3 hours. April 16, 2012
well done game Like their other games you have to really explore each scene completly. The other thing to remember is to think out of the box such as when you need a screwdriver think of what else could be used. I have 3 of their games and find this latest to be just as well done. Hope people will give it a try even if there is only a hint button on the HO puzzles because you do get help from the map and the task list. April 16, 2012
Very Enthralling Game - Loved It This review is based on the whole game playing in hard mode. * A mystery HOPA game (hidden object puzzle adventure) * 5 chapters * 2 modes of play: Easy/Hard * Hard mode has sparkles just for the HO scenes. * Hint/Skip take at least a couple of minutes. Very slow. * Hint is only available for the HO scenes. * Journal which you take pictures. Also has tabs for evidence, characters, and story. * Map shows your present location, areas of interest: evidence, needs investigating, HO scenes, and completed areas. You can't use it to travel back/forth locations however. * Also shows list of task(s) that need to be completed. * Graphics: Characters look very realistic and also has several cut scenes throughout the game. * Voice overs for all the characters but your own. My overall impression of the game: Well I really loved this game. Very enthralling story/mystery. I was hooked to this right from the get go and held my interest to the very end. I did not stop playing this until I got to the end. This game is kinda on the lines of an Agatha Christie or Sherlock Holmes type of story in my opinion. The graphics right along with the cut scenes I found to be very well done. Also the voice overs. I found this game to have more "adventure" to it than HO scenes cause there is a lot of traveling back/forth. Adventure side the usual standard fare of inventory items. While this game didn't have a hint button in regards to where to go/do next I did find the map pretty helpful but i will admit I did get hung up at the end of chapter 3 so used the walk through for just that one part only. Other than that I had no problems. I did have to think a bit on where to go/do next but far from frustrating. HO scenes I found to be very well done. Only had to use a couple of hints. Majority pretty ease to locate. Puzzles I found pretty easy: Putting together pieces of letters, gears, hit in right sequence, match/move circle rings. Also a slider puzzle. I only skipped one puzzle. As for game length: I was quite surprised I got through this in 3 1/2 hours. That's rare for me since I'm a slow game player. I take my time. I found this to be long enough for me however as the game seemed longer than that so no complaint about the game length. Overall, I give this 5 stars. While I did get hung up on one part of the game I overall found this to be a pretty relaxing and a fun game. Thanks Big Fish and developer for an excellent game here. April 16, 2012
Good game Based on the demo, this is an interesting and good game, though not different from the usual HOGs we're used to. Good storyline with interesting interaction/dialogues, good and clear graphics, easy HOS and puzzles, good voice-overs and the usual irritating music. And there is a Hint button in the HOS, a Question mark in the puzzles that tell you what to do, along with a map and a diary with characters, story, and tasks ahead. I think there's plenty information. April 16, 2012
A good time to be had..... Bonjour, today my name is Sainclare and I am a photographer accompaning Investigative Reporter, Joseph Rouletabille. Our journey begins on a train from Paris and we are going to investigate a mysterious crime involving the brutal attack of the daughter of a famous Scientist/Inventure by what some claim to be a supernatural beast. During our mission, I am supplied by a photography camera that I use to take photos of clues that are later added to my journal. I also have a detailed map and a task list that helps me along the way. I am surrounded by excellent graphics and very good voice/overs that are given to other characters to help me along the way. I get to ask questions which is very helpful. Unfortunately the music is rather annoying so I turn it off. My adventure involves 2 levels of difficulty which adds to the challenge. I have to deal with puzzles and fun mingames along the way. The most challenging aspect of the mission are the HOG scenes, I sometimes need my glasses in order to find some of the items because the scenes are very crowded. I have so far enjoyed the mission although it could have been more challenging, I sometimes found it too easy. However the story does intigue me so I do invite you to join me, I think that you will enjoy it, especially if you love detective stories. The only difficulty was that there is no hint button during the game so I did get stuck several times. I am now off to complete this mystery, Au revoire everyone. April 16, 2012
Excellent, but short based on the 28 minutes long demo...!!!...wich make me worry about the lenght of the game. Graphics and story are very good... Sound are OK... Map is very usefull, use it a lot. HO scene are well done and challenging. Hint button in the HO scene, otherwise no need for it ...again the map is your best friend. Would buy it....once I found how long the game really is. Good game but very short good game, but very short, took me just over an hour to play the full version. if you need a hint go to the map and click different locations April 16, 2012
Fun, Beautiful, but Short Game Play This review is based on hard mode which does have sparkles for HOS (which is ok by me). On the soapbox for a moment: I prefer difficult mode, but also find it nice to have the HOS called out to save backtracking, so nice job there. The likes: "Nothing to do here right now" - I love when games indicate areas that are complete or have no action for the moment, saves some clicks. Music - It was terrific. I actually turned it up. Fit with theme and HOS all else. Loved it. HOS - Not interactive, beautiful, some level of difficulty, and lovely detail. Story - Was fun and remained on theme throughout Mini-Puzzles - Varied in difficulty, mostly easy, but pretty and clever and fun. Although more than once once puzzle revealed a key to a key to another puzzle that contained a key. Que? The Dislikes: Even in hard mode there were leading comments that denied the gamer a chance to think a little bit. Map - showed places visited, activities complete, but didn't work very well as sometimes it did not reflect where the player was or that there were still activities remaining and, lastly, did not allow the player to jump to locations. Short game play - the thing was over quickly and I am one slow player. Tight leash - The game pushes the player along a very specific path of activity so that sucked a little fun out. The very last piece seemed tacked on. The Monster den should have been a climax, but really added almost nothing but a mysterious looking scene. Overall, fun, beautiful game, but short, not challenging, and overall could've been better. Definitely wouldn't pay for CE. September 17, 2012
Not bad but not great demo length wasn't even a half hour. the map lacked a sense of direction in a way on the train, could have been marked back or forward, spent time trying to figure out what direction had to go to next, was a bit better in the train station at least. If you clicked enough in a scene, it did tell you there was nothing left there to do. I'll consider buying this when have a free game credit. April 16, 2012
