Longer trial time
Shiver Me Timbers
Just when you get rolling in a game it ends. Set sail in this adventureous game in trying too rescue your daughter from the Yucky Pirate Captain takes a lot of luck, thinking and game playing.
I for one turn the music down low and use it for background. Voice over is not bad and kinda sends shivers up and down your spine. Talk about getting the willies. This game is not for playing in the dark
The color and graphics were excellent along with the sound effects. Some of the obects were small enough but not too small to find. Others were well blended in that I had to use a magnifying glass to help find them. The puzzles were challenging enough and took a lot of thought in order to solve them.
I wish we could get a little more than an hour of free play in trial as I had gotten to the bucket being filled with liquid from the barrel. I gave 3 of the dubloons so far to the little guy with the chest. Nine more to go.
I recommend this game as it is a fun filled adventure game.
I leave the purchaseing of it to the individual player. Happy sailing and gaming everyone.

Fun, fun, fun
I will buy this game in the near future. It flowed really nicely. Not sure my computer can handle the full game, but did just fine on the demo.
Great artistry. Music was not annoying. Hogs were fairly easy. Puzzle were right along my alley to be fairly easy on the demo.
Love the pirate who tells stories for tokens. Has a lot of originality. Almost up there with some of my favorites.

Graphically beautiful doesn't equal great game
This review is based upon the hour long demo, because I did not want to buy the game. I am going way against the tide here on BFG (no pun intended), after looking over the other reviews. But, the gorgeous graphics and wide screen aspect and cinematic cut scenes were not enough to overcome a very simple (and boring) game.
I have a lot of respect for the developers (Artifex Mundi) and have enjoyed more than one of their prior games. They were challenging games with some difficult puzzles and good HO scenes, along with having beautiful, immersive graphics.
This game held my hand way too tightly. Every (non difficult) step was explained to me. Conversations felt like little more than being told what to do. The daughter character was-- well, annoying. The VO actor for her sounded like a 10 year old [something I've been noticing in games with VOs - the women characters often sound like children but that's a whole 'nuther issue....] -- and the strange concept that she would be telling her mother what to do when her mother (me) is the director of the museum..... made no sense.
Incredibly, deeply, supremely disappointing. I was really looking forward to this one. Yes, the graphics are fantastic. The cut scenes are cool and very fun. The game play -- what there is of it -- is so easy it felt tiresome. That's the best description of my gaming experience that I can think of. Tiresome.

Amazing pirate adventure - A guy's review
*review based on completing the full game in expert mode, including the bonus game play*
The shortest and most sensible thing I can say about this game is: "BUY IT!"
Though if that is not enough to convince you I will give you a bit more in depth views on this game.
You play as a museum curator about to put on a pirate themed exhibition, and while reassembling the main attraction something paranormal happens and your daughter is caught in the wake. It is now up to you to save her and uncover a legend about the most fearsome pirate on the high seas.
The story is very well made, though a bit on the romantic side. But it does not fail to engage and excite. It is a highly enjoyable trip to some magical places that will burn itself to the memory of the player. I think this is one of those games you will compare future games to. It is that good.
The graphics are astounding. Vivid and colorful and dark when it needs to be. It all seems almost magical. The level of detail is beyond belief. I salute the artistic/graphical department of this developer. Job well done.
Animations and cut-scenes are also very nice. Though a tiny tiny bit grainy at times, it is better than most casual games I've come across so far. The scenes themselves are very crisp and characters you come across are very well detailed. There is no live actors, just animated, and is what suits this game the best.
Music is also good, but a bit on the boring side. I feel it could be a bit more dramatic. Sound-effects are top notch though, and so is the voice-overs. And every character is voiced, even yourself.
The game play is brilliant for someone like me. I grew up with the old point-and-click adventures, and this game bares similarities. There is a lot of adventuring going on and tasks to solve. Next to that there are many clever puzzles/mini-games, most of witch I found very original and creatively executed.
And of course you have the HO scenes. It is the typical clutter scenes, but they are done so well that it is pure enjoyment. The graphics and level of detail in these scenes are euphoric. I caught myself just gazing at the beautiful scenes and the level of detail involved. They are also interactive with some clever twists, and even though revisiting most of them, items picked up before will not return to the scene. Also, there is a function that let you see the shape (shadow) of the item you are looking for if you struggle. Not only that, but if you really do not like HO scenes, you have an option to solve mahjong puzzles instead to retrieve the necessary item. A developer that thinks about everybody is commendable.
Also, I really appreciated the "construct something useful" mini-games. Hope that is something we see more of in the future.
There are 2 levels of difficulty that you can play:
Regular: No misclick penalty in the HO scenes, sparkles on active zones, hint/skip function recharges quickly and locations with available action are indicated on the map
Expert: Misclick penalty, hint/skip function recharges slower, only the HO scenes, Construct-something-useful scenes and I believe some puzzles sparkles, locations with available actions not indicated on the map.
I really liked the map function in this game also. It is not fast-travel able, so expect a bit running back and forth.
It wasn't the hardest game, so if you want a challenge, be sure to play in expert mode.
The bonus game play is not particularly long, but it is also interesting and fun to play. You also get the typical wallpapers, videos and concept art in the CE, but there is really nothing to warrant the CE price. I will still recommend the CE though, as it is not worth waiting on the SE, and if you haven't already gotten it you are missing out.
For the guys:
You play a mother trying to save her daughter, and the whole story was kinda romantic, but so are the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. If you liked those, you should like this.
I really hope with get sequels to this one, and am looking forward to whatever this developer puts out there.

Not for me
I almost didn't try this based on the title alone. I know plenty of people still enjoy the creepier games but I feel like I've played the best ones already. If it has both "nightmares" and "cursed" in the title, it better blow me away. This did not.
Visually, the game is beautiful. Lovely graphics and artwork. The usual cut-scenes, voice overs, animations. The story begins in a museum (which I love) before moving to a haunted ship. If you enjoy this theme, you may like this game, it's well done. The story is presented nicely (with attempted scares) and the game feels polished.
Here are the things I did not like:
- Only 2 difficulty modes, meaning either sparkles (really annoying in this game) or lose the active zones on the map.
- Very linear, and you are hand held through what to do.
- Artificially slow, everything uses slow animations: break the glass slowly 3 times to get in the case, unpack the crate slowly. The cursor is sluggish and I suspect intentionally so. There are too many extra steps: put the key in the lock, turn the key, press the handle (all with slow animations you have to wait to complete).
- I don't like the cursor icons, especially the gear for actions that can be done right now. I'm used to a gear representing possible interaction and a hand representing actual action, like opening a door handle.
- Music: a bit dreary. Object scenes were usual with clear objects and some interactive items but nothing fun about them.
I think overall, there is a lot of potential in this game. It has the right elements - if only they fit together properly.

Oscar Winning Game
I cannot say it any better than "sfcali" did in his/her review.
This game deserves an award. It goes on forever, never disappointing. A True Master Piece!!!
Love the Mahjong option in the hidden object game. I purposely don't find the last object & then activate the Mahjong game, to double the fun.
A few game glitches tho.
In a few hidden object scenes, the item picked up, does not release properly. ie: The wine bottle does not fill the goblet.
Too bad we can't click on the map to bring us directly to the place of interest instead of having to always back track.
I highly recommend this game. I bought it and loved every minute of it.
Thank you Artifex Mundi for sharing your amazing talent with us.

MAXIMUM OVERPRODUCTION
This game is an excellent example of why, after four years and nearly 300 games, I can no longer fill a punch card. In perhaps half an hour of "game" time I probably spent 10 minutes sitting with my hands folded, watching cinematic-quality scenes on my laptop screen. This is what movies are for. When I did get to actually play, before I could get into any kind of rhythm or get a sense of the game play, it was interrupted by yet another scene or stupendously slow play like picking up a hammer and watching as...it..slowly...hit...a...window...three...times. I would rather play a two hour game I couldn't wait to play again than a six hour game I couldn't wait to end. Unfortunately, there have been so many rave reviews for this game--and all the recent others like it--developers will undoubtedly jump on this tarted-up band wagon and continue this stultifyingly dull trend. Ah well, back to crosswords and logic puzzles, I suppose.

Fun game, good story line, yet not enthralling
I really liked the game as such. For my taste too many HOS, although you do have the option the play a Majhong game instead (I actually like the fact that you have an alternative, as there are plenty of HOS to play). You have also maps, that show you (more or less) where you are.
The hint button appears rather quickly, even in expert mode, so you cannot really get lost anywhere.
What I really liked about the game are the pirate characters, they were really well done. I didn't like the woman's voice at all (but that's a taste thing) and the ship's interior (way too many glooming corals - that part is in the demo version, but in full version you'll play in some really nice locations). Nice mini games, even though they were really easy. HOS are not a pile of junk, what I do appreciate, also makeable.
Overall a good game with some fun factors, good story line, nice graphics and well animated mini films that tell you the story of the captain and his lost love.
It's not one of the best games I played but I still recommend it, as it's well done.

Now THIS is how to do it!
All around high quality game. I loved every minute of it. Fully immersive and interactive, like participating in a movie.
If story isn't important to you and/or you don't like wandering around a lot this is likely not for you. The story and how it's told is a BIG percentage of what makes this game so great.
My only complaints, and it's not really a complaint because it certainly didn't hinder my enjoyment, was the puzzles were on the easy side. I played on the higher difficulty and at no point was even tempted to consult the guide at all. Oh, also the Bonus Adventure was very short and just run of the mill in comparison to how excellent the main game was.
Anyway, SUPER game that really was worth the price of the CE cuz no way was I going to wait to play! :D
