A good trial game, but not great
I was allowed only fourteen minutes of the trial game, and I am not an expert player. The game itself was just okay, but the English was bad. I wish the developers of these games would take the initiative to have them vetted by a native English speaker before releasing them. It really detracts from the experience when I find myself correcting their usage, or worse yet, deleting the game because of the language problems. (I am not referring to British English as opposed to American English, but incomplete sentences that appear to be pidgen English.) Try the game for yourself, but I will not be purchasing this one.

EXCELLENT PUZZLE ADVENTURE GAME!!
I loved this game!!! Everything about it is great!!
Graphics, Mini puzzles, Storyline, Length of game- all great!!!
Bonus mini-puzzles are harder than main puzzles.
VERY LITTLE HOs!!!!! (which I love!!)
Enjoyed it completely!!!!!
The end left you hanging - probably a sequel!!!

PUZZLES, PUZZLES PUZZLES!!
This is one of the best HOG's I've played in a long time. I put up with the HOS to get to the puzzles and this one is LOADED with great, new, challenging puzzles. The storyline is coherent and though it's a bit on the monochromatic side, everything is clear and easy to see.
The only negative I have is that this game (and others like it) would benefit so much without the "verbal" clues and hints. Even playing on expert mode gives you too many clues about what to do with an item/place you've found or earned.
I loved the atmospheric music and the eerie "weather".
Feel like I got my money's worth from this one.

Haunted Hotel: Charles Dexter Ward CE
Pros: Beautiful graphics, which more often than not is a BFG standard. The storyline is a dark one, alot of dark arts, so I may be a prude, I wouldn't allow kids to play this one due to the references in the demo and what I am sure run through the entire game.
The challenge is pretty good. Not too simple where I breeze through it, or it pretty much plays itself because it gives so much away, nor is it too difficult that just makes the game too tedious and takes away from the fun.
The cons: Storyline. It IS a very dark one. Just be forewarned of that.
Overall, great game. I think I may be getting this game. I had hit a few lemons in regards to games lately, and this one while not in the *stellar* club, it does not belong in the *stinker* club.

Spooooooky
Pretty decent game, and long enough. Love the whole "Haunted Hotel" series. Good solid story line.

Wonderful!
What an enjoyable game. This is a good and interesting game. Puzzles are just right for me and the story is interesting enough to grab my attention. The graphics are great and the sound is good. The game has a few HO's and a lot of mini games. Some of them are good old ones and there are some that I didn't see before.
Well done Devs! Thank you BFG.

This One Didn't Grab Me.
As I said with my rating, I found nothing special here. It's not a bad game, but it's just the same old thing. Running around doing the same tasks as every other HOG. This game is a little more old school than most of the newer HOGS. I'd really like to see more thought go into these games. I find it annoying to collect a screw driver, crow bar, or the like, use it once and lose it, only to need it 3 scenes later. Come on! Give me a backpack and make me lug the tools (and remember that I have them) through the entire game! Don't even get me started on "oilers" and rusty hinges! But I digress.....This game's just another dreary HOG, nothing more, nothing less.

The Most Phenomenal Game I've Played in Years
Rarely do I ever believe that CE's are worth the money-but in this case, yes!
I may be a bit biased as I am an H.P. Lovecraft fan and have read all of his writings, but that also gives me a unique perspective about the game itself. The developers did a fantastic job with the story of Charles Dexter Ward. If I were to base my review on the storyline alone, it would be 5 stars. The way in which the story is told is masterfully done. The journal entries that you locate along the way really help tell the story as do the well-placed cut-scenes along the way. Along with the 'diary entries', you will also come across letters, books, and correspondence which also contribute to the story. I found myself immediately taken in, and it was difficult to stop playing.
This is a VERY long game so you get your money's worth. I consider myself an expert player and it took me about 8-9 hours to play, NOT including bonus content. Granted, I took my time exploring and read ALL of the journal entries, etc., but even taking that into account, the fastest of players will get several hours worth of game-play.
As for the game play itself, it is heavy on the Adventure and lite on the HOS, which I prefer. There are only a few hidden object scenes scattered throughout the game, perhaps 6-8 total (rough estimate). There are some puzzles to solve-none overly difficult and with time and patience, can easily be completed without the need for a walk-through. Most of the game consists of exploring numerous locations and picking up and utilizing various inventory objects along the way.
The atmosphere is spooky. This game was designed with a more mature audience in mind, so be sure to take note of that before handing off to your kiddies. The subject matter deals with some pretty dark and sinister topics, but then, it wouldn't be H.P. Lovecraft if it didn't.
The graphics are very well done and capture the mood of the story very well as does the environment sounds and the accompanying musical score, which is not constant, unobtrusive, and quite beautifully rendered.
From every way I look at it, I cannot think of a single complaint about this game, which honestly NEVER happens. There is usually always something that bothers me, but not with this game. The time and effort put into developing this game is evident in all possible areas and I can only hope that other developers take note, and are up to the challenge of creating games as perfect and enjoyable as this one. Happy gaming!

Spooky Game With A Lovecraft Theme!
First off, I must admit that I used the Strategy Guide more often in this game than any other I have played. But that said, both the game play and the story were well worth it.
I thought the graphics were excellent, and the music is just right for this sort of story. It's there in the background, setting a gloomy mood without being intrusive in any way. And kudos to the foley person. The sound effects were excellently done and very realistic.
The HOS were quite easy, though I did have to use the hint button once or twice. The mini-games were fun to play as they were really based on logic. Not the kind that make you want to pull your hair out ;)
The story was interesting and fun, collecting and combining different objects to produce a desired result (developing a film, for instance). The layout of the scenes was a bit confusing at first, but I finally remembered what room was where, and how to get to it. But if it were easy, there would be no challenge.
Finally-if you are a Lovecraft fan, you will truly enjoy this game as you will pick up on the various references to his stories. The writer did an excellent job and is quite obviously a fan of H.P. It is not necessary to be familiar with this great author's works, though, to enjoy the game.
This is the first game that actually game me shivers when the ending played. It was an OMG moment. I won't say more as I don't want to spoil it for others.
The "extras" aren't that abundant and mostly consist of more mini-games. I haven't played those yet as I need a break but if they are anything like those within the main story they should be fun as well.
So much fun I played it twice! And my hubby, who just started to play as a lark, was soon hooked in and now can't wait to continue. He's just finished Day 1 and is frantically trying to find the time to continue on.
I recommend the CE version not for the extras but because the Strategy Guide might become indispensable to some (like me). It would get me out of a bind so that I could continue instead of spinning my wheels.
