VERY STRANGE GAME!! I read the firs reviewer's comments and didn't quite get where she was coming from, until I downloaded the trial. What a very strange game. Basically you play the game as though you are going through the book. There is nothing to tell you what to do. I figured out that you have to click on a lot of things randomly to get something and the characters pop up to say what they need. The cursor does not change when you hover over a vital object. You just have to click on everything until you find something. The piano music was intrusive - and I love classical music - and got on my nerves a lot. In the HOS there is a strange situation where if you click on a wrong object (I think) a number appears on the sheet music at the bottom right of the screen. Then a weird thing happened - the hints increased sometimes too and I still don't know why! I did get the hang of it after a while but the characters kept popping up too much for my liking. Also when you collect items you have to combine some of them within the inventory boxes on the bottom of the screen. For instance, in the kitchen you get given a bent key. When you finally work out how to go from room to room and eventually click on the fireplace in the sitting room it tells you that the fire will soften the key but you can't use your bare hands. You then discover that you have to click on the poker , which is also used to poke around in the chair in that room - which you can't do until Mrs Bennet has left the room and she will only do that once you have found her feather duster. The poker then goes back into your inventory and you have to put it together with the bent key and put the poker and key in the fire. You can then go back to the kitchen to open the cupboard. I played the demo to the end and my feeling was that this was a very quirky game. I must say it had me very intrigued to know how the rest of the game pans out. I am still wavering over whether I will buy it or not as it is very different from any other HOG I have played. I don't want to recommend or otherwise as I think you have to play the demo to see what you think. And I still don't know what the numbers are for on the sheet music!! FYI - the hints are the numbers on the red oval at bottom right of screen and Mr Bennett pops up to show you where the item is you need. It doesn't actually tell you it is the hint button. Who killed Mr. Darcy? A question to the developers: What were you thinking when you drew Mr. Darcy? Seriously, how could you turn one of English Literature's most appealing male character looking like a middle aged frumpy looking toad. That really was the last straw for me on this game. Not to mention I really am not in the mood to carry out meanial tasks from cartoon characters; fetch this, sew that, bake this? I dont take that from my husband, and I certainly will not have a game domesticate me. Granted I did love the graphics, beautiful scenes but the endless dialogues made the game very boring. Also the confusing instructions which just confused me; perhaps it's Monday and I am not in my groove just yet. The music was beautiful when you listen to it the first time; after the 10th, my jaws ached from gritting my teeth. HO scens are pretty to look at and that is all I can say about the HO scenes, they are pretty to look at. Finding the pages of diary and the little wax seals just caused my eyes to tear up from all the squinting. Sorry but even Lizzie and Darcy's timeless love is not worth me getting more crows feet at my age. I can only recommend that you try the tiral version and make up your mind, many may enjoy the Bennet experience and many like me will prefer to re-read the book. June 25, 2012
Rather boring game This game does faithfully follow an abbreviated form of the book as you play; there are a great many cut scenes which are drawings in a sepia hue & various cut out characters pop into the screen. The dialogue is not voiced over but it is clickable if you read fast. The music is a melodic piano; I personally felt something a little more tinkling would have been better but it is not unpleasant to listen to. Once you move into a main screen then the graphics are crisp & the artwork colourful; each scene has a great many items as the hidden objects are within these main scenes. Some of the items are very small but occasionally there will be a little glint where one is hidden. Click all around a scene as you never know what you might find; a locked door, an item to go into your inventory, etc. Some inventory items can be joined together to create an object that you need to use in a scene. In addition to the H0s you should also look for scraps of paper which form Lizzie?s diary, once you find the pages of the diary there is a mini task to put the pieces together & then a nicely voiced over reading. Also you will find wax seals, you start the game with 5 hints & you will get an extra one for each seal you find. It took me a little while to figure out how to move between scenes (when it is allowable) & I had a sort of ?oh right that?s how you do it? moment. It seems there will be a few mini tasks; I found one which was playing piano notes in the correct order but as I only played to the end of the demo I cannot say how many there may be. This is not a game for me as I prefer my H0s with an adventure & this was too tiresome as I was not in the mood to read through all the dialogue June 25, 2012
pride & prejudice:hidden anthologies not my cup of tea I'm afraid. I love the book but this does not do it justice. The details were anachronistic- clothes that were the wrong period etc.- and the game play very, very slow... I only got as far as the second scene before I decided enough was enough, which is a great shame because the basic concept of games based on much loved novels is sound.., I just think the game designers need to get their historical facts straight in that case and give some more thought to the actual game-play June 25, 2012
Oh Dear! It's Different I bought the original DVD and it is one of my favoured movies, so on that note, I purchased this game without a tryout. I rarely do this and have learned once again to stop doing that. Could have been a better choice of music, the game strains me enough. Perfect confusion and too much chatter to go through. Very few HO's to find but also must find other items in every scene to help us along. This is in cartoon character and there are not many choices on how you can play. Jumping back and forth between characters stopped me playing until BFG comes out with a non-confusing way to understand and play this game. Sorry folks but I simply would rather not read from a book, been there, done that so good luck and hope you enjoy it more than I. Cannot recommend or deter anyone with my opinion. Very difficult to comment on this game. Read as many ratings as you can. Other fishes have great opinions and ways of describing the games. Keep coming back and keep reading all opinions. Good luck and enjoy. June 25, 2012
Really Terrible Game I tried out the beta version of this game and felt only lovers of the book would really want this game, (I believe I gave it a so-so rating because of this) anyone else would hate it. It's confusing, you have to guess from scene to scene what to do, the cartoon characters were a pain in the (put in your own words) and were drawn terribly; the music could have been better as well as the graphics. I really didn't recommend this game except for those extreme Jane Austen fans. This game really needed improvements before it was released! June 25, 2012
Interesting ...but Being a huge fan of the novel, I was rather dissapponted There is a hint system, recharges very slowly in the form of a cartton characters & takes a bit to get the hint to SHOW what's/Where Drawing board characters Graphics are good in the HOS-some objects very small Music is mellow, piano in some scenes **alot of Dialog*** Played full demo- Interesting comcept of using this novel for a game, but just missed the mark there is no map that I saw & you wander s bit I would recommend at least try it-might work on the last day of the month & you need a PC credit on a DD June 25, 2012
yuk extremely poor,at times frustrating clicking at random, characters appearing, not my cup of tea shame because it is a very good book. June 25, 2012
I wouldnt have even published this game Its terrible, the graphics, story line, all the stops from the characters talking. HORRIBLE June 25, 2012
Great idea, but not well executed I read the other reviews, but still wanted to try this game as I love Pride and Prejudice. Sadly, I must agree with the other reviews. There is a lot of dialogue, and some of it is not very well done. If you're going to base a game on P&P, the dialogue has to be impeccable. What's more, you have to click, click, click to get through it all. The HOS are ok, but some of the items are so tiny and/or indistinguishable that I found myself guessing and being surprised that I actually clicked on a hint or a piece of the journal or something on the list. Took the fun out of it because it became a guessing game rather than search and find. I didn't mind the music as much as some reviewers, but I did quit the demo before finishing it. This could have been a sumptuous game. Rethought, rewritten, and redesigned, it still could be. But for now, I wouldn't recommend it. June 25, 2012
