Best Game In Years! From my point of view could not fault this game, more like it please BFG. Devs deserve to be congratulated too. July 13, 2012
Immediate buy for me.. I loved the games virtual villagers, but hated the slow speed, so it's refreshing to have a similar genre of game that doesn't have you staring at the screen willing the game to speed up.. There is plenty to do, cute characters, lovely cartoon graphics and unobtrusive music. I bought the game five minutes into the demo. July 12, 2012
Excellent game I am a big fan of this type of game and this one didn't disappoint. I have been playing most of the day and yet to complete it and I am sure I will be replaying it in due course too. The challenges were varied but not tedious and I enjoyed the Angry Birds aspect. If you enjoy this genre then this one is a definite. July 12, 2012
Sooooooooo ugly people!!!! I like this game very much but there's only 1 thing i hate--- THE PEOPLE ARE SO UGLY. Every time I play the game my anger tends me to close it when i see some of the ugliest people in the village.I wanna pull their heads off!!!!! November 25, 2012
Really great game! If you like Virtual Villagers, Farm Tribe, or Artist Colony, you will want to try this one. It starts out slow and seems too simple at first, but gets a lot better. I almost uninstalled it before the hour trial was up, but I'm so glad I didn't. I'm addicted to it now and love it! It's more complex than it seems with many different menus and screens to keep track of all that it going on. It's a task based game with resource gathering. Unlike Virtual Villagers, it does not run while the game is off, but it doesn't need to since the tasks don't take nearly as long. I find that the game play is much faster than the other games I mentioned. Building doesn't take forever and I'm constantly switching my workers around based on what resources I need most and which ones are selling for the highest prices. The characters are cute and each has their own likes and dislikes, so you have to pay attention to that when you assign them jobs. Characters gain experience in their profession which speeds up their work and their walking. There are nice little mini games such as a game similar to Angry Birds with pirates and a cannon and a puzzle type of game to gain more room in your houses for more settlers. The more I play this game, the more I discover. The menus are simple in the beginning, but once you have built up some manufacturing buildings, you can go to one screen to see all of your industries, how many people are assigned to each, and what products they are producing. The workers menu is nice too because you can scroll through the people to see which profession they are and what task they are currently doing. While playing the game, there is a nice mini map with colored dots so you can see at a glance what people's professions are and where they are working. If you like this type of game (also similar to Buried in Time, Escape from Paradise, Gemini Lost, Little Folk of Faery, and Many Years Ago), definitely give this one a try for the full hour of the demo. no overview I am not a big fan of pick up and drop off people to get them to do chores. I prefer to have the whole screen on display so that I can see what is what and to not have to squint to see my workers. But the graphics are cute, sound is pleasant and fighting pirates in a mini game is just fun. not sure if i will buy it because the constant scrolling around is just not my thing. July 11, 2012
If only this game weren't so sloooooow... I was a bit hesitant to buy this game after the trial, but my almost 9-year-old was adamant that we needed this game after watching me play it. That being said, even after playing it farther, I still can't say I love it. It's an interesting story, an interesting idea, and definitely has potential. Despite all of the reviews comparing it to Virtual Villagers it's not quite the same as that series of games. It's much more similar to Artist Colony than Virtual Villagers. However, it's biggest flaw is just how slow it is. You collect or make items to do things in the game (food, stone, wood, more sophisticated things as time goes along). And your colonists are the ones doing it, all with their own likes or dislikes. Unlike Artist Colony, there seems to be a larger variety of tasks (since I remember Artist Colony getting repetitive rather quickly), as not everyone is ultimately trying to do more or less the same thing. So it ends up feeling less repetitive. However, it being less repetitive doesn't make much of a difference or help it a lot when it just takes so long to get things done. This is where it's not like Virtual Villagers - the game doesn't continue to run when you minimize/quit it. Which means that in order to have your colonists collect/produce enough of the things you need for the tasks, you have to leave the game running. And you can't leave it running and walk away from it either, as occasionally messages from your advisors will pop up on the screen, and those pause the game until they're dealt with. In order to get as far as I have in the game, I've honestly sat in front of my computer reading while the game runs. Sure, I've bought more colonists and have multiple colonists working on things, but it still takes time, and without a book to read at the same time I would have given up on this game awhile ago. Even my almost 9-year-old, who goes on about how neat this game is, will frequently find something else to do at the same time. Another flaw is the tutorial portion - it's not awful, but it's not great, and sometimes information you need doesn't pop up unless a specific thing happens. For instance, I had no idea for awhile that you could add more rooms to the houses and have more space for colonists without building another house because I just built the second house when I hit the upper limit and before I got another colonist. So I didn't get the message about adding on rooms until after I ended up earning an extra colonist that put me over the limit. Not a huge deal, but it's an example of how it doesn't tell you things unless a certain thing happens. Your advisors will also sometimes tell you to do something (such as sell all your wood/stone/food because it's selling for more right now) that isn't necessarily in your best interest. For instance, without food, your colonists won't work. I didn't listen when they suggested things such as that, but I'm sure that could frustrate some. Finally, the pirates game that's sort of like Angry Birds. I don't honestly care much for Angry Birds, and it's a bit annoying that you *have* to complete those games for some things to happen or be earned in the game. Sure, I can do them, but either a skip option or at least not making them necessary to continue in the game would be better. Otherwise, the graphics and sound are good, and if there was just some option to speed up time in the game this would be pretty good. But given just how slow it is sometimes, I can really only call it okay. Definitely play the trial before you buy it and keep in mind that you'll want a book with you as you play. September 24, 2012
There are not enough games like this! Utterly charming and engaging from the off. The games starts slowly and gets more frantic as the challenges build up. You choose where to place your workers to have the greatest impact. I've played it twice and it was different both times. If you like Virtual Villagers, Artists Colony etc you will love this. There are just not enough games of this type on Big Fish...at the risk of sounding like Oliver Twist...Please could we have some more? March 2, 2013
Wonderful Sim/TM The reviews are right, this is a great sim game. Reminds me of Artist Colony, in so much as you have to assign people to perform certain tasks, educate them, engage in money making (trade, in this case) and complete assignments. The graphics are great. There is a lot of stuff to do. Decent story line and good sound effects. I've played through twice now. Finished much faster the second time around since the tutorial (is there one?) is seriously lacking. The first time around, I did not figure out that having the right type of person working in the right place really speeds up production. (Farmers in fields, workers cutting wood, etc.) I also didn't figure out that there is a stand of wild healing herbs to supplement the ones you grow. Etc. There is a Angry Birds aspect, which you can access, (when the time is right) by opening the ship/trade page and clicking on Hunting at the top of the page. While it is challenging to get five stars on each of the 12 levels, you can proceed with only one. You just don't get the full reward. Be warned though, it is slow going, especially getting enough education points to 'learn' new things. Train four or five scientists and leave them to study. Unlike some other games of this genre, no one dies, no kids are born, no one starves if you forget about them. The game does not continue when you shut it down. The houses are puzzles. To add more people (hire them from the port), you have to build new houses or add rooms to the existing houses. You have to pay for the new rooms and fitting them together can be tricky! The maximum number of people is 50! There are a lot of interruptions. Your trade advisor pops up to tell you what is selling for a high price at port. The other advisor pops up to tell you to build a new building (or several). And, the natives periodically ask for stuff in trade. Trying to meet all these tasks takes some skill and some tasks have a time limit, but the game is untimed and if you miss a deadline, you only forfeit the time bonus. If you enjoy sims, like Artist Colony, you will probably love this game. I did. February 5, 2013
Broke my cardinal rules on PC games There are a few things I never do in regard to my pc game habit: I never post a review, I never play the game more than once, and I never play with the sound on. One can save up to five salvos in this game and it is worth it to do. The colonists are ship wrecked. Each colonist has a different skill set and this varies from salvo to salvo. So while one play through can go smooth as silk because every colonist has the right skill at the right time it is needed, other times one doesn't have enough farmers to get the crops growing or enough workers to get building started or enough scientists for research, etc. Each salvo is a new game. The Promisedland can be challenging at first in terms of figuring out how to feed the colonists and provide housing, but BFG has a good information blog spot for when folks get stuck. The graphics are clear, neat, and fun. The music waxes celtic, but I like it! The challenge is high at the beginning in trying to figure things out, but stays entertaining throughout the game as there are logistics to think of and some timed tasks to take care of. This has got to be the best building/time managment game thus far. If you liked Royal Envoy 2, Northern Tale, A Gnomes Home, and last but not least any of the Roads to Rome, you must try this one! I highly recommend it (this may be my first and only review)! January 28, 2013
