Grim Tales: I wished this game was better...
I'm a fan of the Grim Tales series, so I had to play this game. However, it felt like somewhat of a let-down for reasons I'll explain.
Fun Factor:
The game was somewhat fun, with interesting, varying puzzles. The game has a slight whimsical feel, which is nice but not overbearing. Nor are the dark elements in the game. The game also presents a map earlier on, which saves time backtracking between scenes (which is a big problem with a lot of HOGs). However, one irritating thing about this game is that you spend a lot of time finding medallions to objects, which seems nice at first but gets tiresome when you're looking for the 20th or so medallion. I wouldn't say I had a blast playing this game, but it wasn't awful...just average overall.
Visual and Sound:
Elephant Games has a reputation of having absolutely stunning artwork, and this game doesn't disappoint. Each scene is breathtakingly done, and it's worth stopping for a moment and just taking it all in. I can never find fault in the visuals.
The soundtrack is limited (compared to the other games), but when you're in an area, you actually feel like you're in the area, with no loud monotonous music--sometimes you just hear nature, or a clock ticking, which is a nice change. The voice actors have crisp, clear dialogue, though some of the characters can be annoying to listen to after awhile. The only thing I could wish for her is more ambient music, but the minimalistic soundtrack is perfectly fine.
Level of Challenge:
The game offers standard HOGs which aren't too difficult. Puzzles vary in style, which is refreshing. The picture-jumping is memorable from the other games, and I always enjoyed it--the rewriting the past to positively effect the future.
I played on the casual mode, so if I got stuck on a game, the skip button came up pretty quickly if I wanted to move on. The fault I find with the regular hint button, though, is that it won't point out what to do in a scene; it will just give a hint in text. While this can be nice, it relies on you remembering things. The other problem is that sometimes the hint will tell you to do something in a location that you haven't gone to yet, so you'll have no idea what the hint's talking about. Of course, you get no clarification until you complete the task. Also, the hints refer to the names of specific locations/scenes, so if you're not familiar with them from the map, then you have no idea what it's talking about, either.
The game was challenging, but sometimes in a way that was more irritating than necessary.
Storyline:
The story here is really unacceptable. It starts out promising, but most of it doesn't get explained. Characters do or say things that never get resolved. The end was very quick and I felt like there could have been a more satisfying conclusion. In fact, I was confused about how many wishes the boy made, what were the exact consequences, etc. It was just very confusing and poorly done, and I got bored of it easily and focused my attention to the puzzles. Most of the game is about "saving" a character in some way. Also, the puppet that comes to life is a constant annoyance throughout the game, and I hoped he would shut up, though he never does.
Overall, the puzzles were great, the HOGs were nothing special, the story was terrible, but the visuals and sounds were beautifully done as always. The game is very long, so you feel you get your money's worth just by that, but it's not a game that really wow-ed me compared to some of Elephant Games' other titles. It's worth buying, sure, but don't expect it to be a masterpiece unless you're only looking for great visuals and sound.

very good quality game
I bought SE edition after reading the others reviews. It's true. It's a very long lasting and goog quality game.Mini-games are not so easy even in casual mode. Story and graphics are well done. One of my favorite game on a long, long BigFish game list. No need to buy CE edition to enjoy hours of good time.

Good but a little frustrating
This is, like most HOGs, a game where you must search for items to complete your quest. The story is good, the graphics are crisp and sharp and you have help from the hints if you need it. I have only two complaints: First, in most HOGs if you see an item you can pick it up and take it with you for later use, in this one you have to wait until the game allows you to go back and pick it up. Second, and to me most frustrating, is the fact that you are continually running from one end of the game area to the other. Items that you need for one part of the game require you to travel through up to a dozen sections to another part of the game to get them and then go back. What puzzles there are are just hard enough to be interesting but not impossible. All in all it is a good game but very time consuming.

Great game!
I've played through the whole game, and I really enjoyed it. It was a good length, and took me several hours to complete. The storyline is interesting, and the graphics are very good. There's a variety of different locations, so you get to see lots of different scenery - each HO scene is in a different location, which means you don't have to search the same one over and over again, which is a plus.
Also, it includes a picture of the cutest baby polar bear ever. Seriously, that polar bear is really cute.
Anyway, this is a good installment in the Grim Tales series, and I recommend it. You can definitely play this one without having played the other two in the series and still get what's going on, though.

A Litte Redundant, Still Fun
I bought this game on the quality of the previous 2 games in this series, despite some of the reviews saying it wasn't as good. While those reviews are correct--it doesn't quite live up to its predecessors, it was still fun to play!
The story and game play were very similar to the other 2 Grim Tales games, however I was worried when first starting out in the game as the first memory you visit doesn't happen for quite a while in the storyline. I felt like they could have done more with that aspect of the game, as that is what drew me to the first two games. So while they included this bit of game play, and the bits they had were quite good, it didn't feel as seamless or quite as well done as it was before.
The hidden object scenes were particularly notable in this game. They were clear and well drawn, and the item lists had the perfect amount of difficulty to find. With many hidden object adventure games it's easy for the HO scenes to become tedious and feel like an arbitrary obstacle. In The Wishes they were fun, engaging and fit within the outline of the story.
The puzzles were mostly fun and relatively challenging, although there were too few of them. There were a few frustrating AI puzzles towards the end of the game that gave me some headaches, mainly though because of the knee jerk nausea reaction that I felt due to their Stauf-esque quality. I knew something was up trying to beat the AI in picking glowing beetles against a gecko, but it wasn't until I encountered the honeycomb shaped flower pot that I really made the connection. While all these HOG adventure games can thank Trilobyte and "Old Man Stauf" for their roots, this puzzle hit a little too close to home. Luckily the AI here wasn't nearly as unforgiving as Henry Stauf. :)
The adventuring for the most part was intuitive and enjoyable, although after an hour or so it became clear that the main obstacle behind most locked doors and boxes would be an oddly shaped "key". While acceptable and even fun in most situations, after locating several of these keys and trying to remember exactly which shape went with what door, the process became rather redundant and tedious. You almost feel as though there must have been something slightly more creative the developers could have come up with as a reason I couldn't progress through this particular door at this time, rather than just throwing a swan shaped key at it and tasking me with finding it.
All in all, I would recommend this game. There are better games available, but this one ranks nicely in the middle of the pack. If you played this and enjoyed it, I would definitely recommend its 2 predecessors, The Bride and The Legacy. I enjoyed this game, despite its flaws, and do not regret the time or money spent!

the length was great! I get upset when I feel the progammers gave me a short story. but not so in this case. I liked the story and the way they took you into the pictures. good game! (2012)

Not as good as I expected
I've been waiting for the SE of this to come out, ever since the CE came out, but I'm a little disappointed by it. I loved Grim Tales: The Bride and Grim Tales: The Legacy, and was hoping that this game would somehow again centre around werewolves as in those games (even though the story was tied up at the end of The Legacy). Instead of werewolves though, we've got a demon preying on Brandon - the child from The Legacy. Once again you enter into the memories of the main character (Luisa in the first two instalments, Brandon in this one) and fix things that have gone wrong. Everything is pretty much the same as the first instalments, so if you enjoyed those, then you should enjoy this game - I'm just disappointed that it should go off on a different tangent from the originals. After all how much 'evil' can surround one family?

Good game and fun
Elephant games are another really good developer. Long games and fun to play. Has a map and good graphics, voice over and music. The HOS are good and so are the puzzles. A fun enjoyable game.
