Echoes of the Past: The Revenge of the Witch 4.3 5 71 71
The 4th game of the great series "Echoes of the Past"! I've played the CE and now the SG, and I chose to buy the SG. Even though CE offers, in addition to the five chapters, a bonus chapter, extra mini-games and strategy guide, and I loved all the Echoes of the Past, (and this is also very entertaining and well made), this is not the best of them. The witch came back? to revenge and casts a spell over the kingdom of Orion. To help them, you have to find the 10 gems of the magic staff, to have strong powers against her. Interactive gaming experience, many locations with a lot to get, use and do. Most times things found are used soon and close. Not much comes and goes. Great sound, nice, colorful and crisp graphics, immersive atmosphere, well-made cutscenes, VO appropriate to the characters. Two types of HOS - classic (but interactive), and after you will place what you found in another scene, also interactive; and - you have to find several pieces of an object. They are not very difficult and HO scenes are repeated. Usual mini games, like "turn on all the lights" , but with something more, eg. there are some who need one wire and others that require two wires connecting them. They recur, and although increasing the difficulty, they are not exactly challenging. Three levels of difficulty, and you can change during the game. No map, but it has a journal. Certainly great moments of fun for the Weekend !! August 17, 2012
For puzzle lovers only ** I finished the CE version. The plot is NOT 100% tied up in this SE version and told you what you would be doing in the bonus so I can?t even recommend the SE version either! See end to see other CE vs SE differences etc** If you are not a puzzle lover I don?t recommend this game to you at all. I am and even I found some areas between puzzles boring. I really enjoyed all the other games in this series but thought the last game would be the last in the series as it was really pushing the plot of the same witch which you defeat in every game and keeps coming back. This is the weakest of the series by far. Instead of calling this game something else, as it doesn?t have the same feel, look to it as the other games, they have ended up watering down the series instead of finishing strong. This game is the perfect example of formulaic plot, sometimes you can get away with it if everything else is strong or excellent or at least different. Frankly the story, plot etc was really bad IMO. The only thing very good about the game was the puzzles, the graphics were washed out and seemed worse than the other games, adventure side boring at times. Both puzzles and hidden object scenes were repeated. PUZZLES (spoilers as to kind, numbers in this review are roughly!) There is a variety of type ? arcade, logic but nothing timed. I found them all to be easy-medium apart from the arcade/non logic type. I loved the amount, variety of them as I?m a puzzle lover! (for a HOPA though, I think some are hard - hence the 4 out of 5 hardness.) The first puzzle you encounter the light up the lines one, if you don?t like it then you will be frustrated as that puzzle is repeated 10 times, (different patterns) 22 different puzzles in SE Repeating puzzles and number of times you play them in total ? light the lines puzzle 10 ? aquarium puzzle 2, -domino 2, - peg solitaire 3, - click on pattern tiles to rotate them 2 plus another variation of it HIDDEN OBJECT SCENES What was good was that there were three different kinds of HOS ? 4 different traditional scenes ? all of them you had to play 3 times. 2 different reverse scenes (put item back)? both of them you had to play 3 times 5 find the same items ? one was repeated Mostly static scenes (not much movement), some tiny and hard to see objects, defined enough but not sharp. Mildly interactive. There were 3 levels of hardness and you couldn?t switch mid game. The hardest had no sparkles, no info on puzzles, no skips or no hints including HOS. But they did have black bar tips and with reversed hidden object scene told you the objective. I didn?t feel the puzzles, HOS and adventure were well spaced out. It was a good length SE and probably super long if you are slower with puzzles. It's so frustrating this game as I love the puzzles. I just wish the HOS weren't repeated (which I hate) as well as the puzzles, and started a new series with a different better plot. I do think it's an objective 3/5 stars. CE differences ? I bought the CE as it promised unlocking of puzzles and ?game designer ? create your own game levels and play them? But it was a very limited ?design? of one puzzle that was in the game, so misleading, and there was only unlocking of 8 puzzles. You don?t get any of that here. The bonus was a good length but there was a lot of repeating of one puzzle. Even though it told you what you would be doing in the bonus there was no plot IMO in the bonus. August 17, 2012
Interesting HOs And Unique Puzzles GAME COMPLETED A COUPLE OF TIMES After playing, and complaining about, four games in this series, I?ve come to the conclusion that the chunky grainy graphics must simply be what the game designers want. Personally, I think it looks ugly and sometimes makes HOs difficult to see, but I guess there?s no help for it. It is just as well the series have some excellent and unique features to make up for it. Things I particularly noted in this game: HO SCENES The HO scenes in this game are really imaginative and clever. A variety of multiple items, standard lists, misplaced items and fragmented objects are not only scattered throughout the game, but in several cases a combination of these will be used in one scene. Very cool. On the downside, each HO (and there are lots of them) is visited 3 times, and that is just too much of a good thing. PUZZLES There are some really original puzzles, and again a lot of them. Some are repeated, but increase in difficulty each time. The level of difficulty varies. I used the skip button more than I like to, but that was more impatience and tiredness, because... LENGTH The game goes on forever. There are 10 chapters, and I swear each one of them seems to be taking an hour. This involves an enormous amount of to and fro, as all areas remain active throughout. There are usually too many items in inventory, and most of the time only the last one you pick up has somewhere to go, and it?s where you just were. HINT Hint gives you a picture of where you need to be. Very good. Unfortunately, you can?t use it to jump to that place. Which is a pity, because there is no map and this game really needs one so you can get around. So, good or no good? I?m still on the fence. Still, I bought, I play it, I haven?t trashed it, so it can?t be all bad, lol. April 26, 2013
Relatively Easy Hidden Object Game Loaded With Fun If you're a player who loves hidden object games with interactive puzzle play then this is the game for you. There are three different levels that you can choose - easy, hard and harder. I found the story line simple and the speaking parts by characters were kept to a minimum which I quite liked. You need to find jewels that complete the magic staff in order to beat the witch. Whilst looking for the jewels within the kingdom the witch has cunningly set curses to stop you from proceeding which in turn means that you need to find out how to break it. You will come across hidden object scenes and puzzles to complete. The puzzles weren't the 'rack your brain' type which I also liked most about the game as it helped keep the momentum going. I did find it quite monotonous having to go back and forth to certain areas as there are no shortcuts via a map. This would be my only gripe with this game. The "hint" is very good if you get lost and unsure of where to go. I enjoyed all the HOS and puzzles and would definitely recommend this game to the avid game player. August 17, 2012
Only if you like puzzles..... I've played quite a few Big Fish games ranging from easy to hard, but this is the first game that I quit playing and uninstalled halfway through. The reason is that there were so many puzzles that the storyline got lost and I ended up frustrated and not having fun. Almost every new scene had at least one puzzle with many scenes having more than one puzzle. One scene I played had at least 4 if not 5 puzzles. There's so much going on that it's best you play with a notebook to make notes because it got to the point where everytime I found a new object I had to go to the start of the game and move from scene to scene trying to use it on every puzzle because there were so many unsolved puzzles that I'd forget where they were. I'd finally find the puzzle and solve it and then get or find a new object that meant I'd go back to the start of the game and start trying every puzzle again, etc, etc. The game play is continuous but plays in segments where in each segment you play toward solving a big puzzle to move forward. The big puzzle in each "segement" is basically the same, so I lost enthusiasm every time I'd solve it because then it would start a new round of game play to reach the end goal of solving the same puzzle again, etc. I do enjoy puzzles, but this just didn't work for me. great game a must buy Fun game all around. All the echoes of the past are worth buying. Keep up the good work. The CE has the bonus chapter. December 19, 2012
awesome, great, just what we've been waiting for! what a fantastic offering! this is a continuation in the Echoes of the Past series, and dthe best so far in my opinion. this is a standard hidden object puzzle adventure with a good storyline, variety of hidden object scenes (list, find x items, place the items where they belong). the puzzles are of differing challenge levels, and so far some have a slight twist on what you're used to seeing (and in a good way, which is nice!). it's not so easy that you're simply clicking through, some of the inventory items require a bit of thought in their usage. a bit of back and forth, usually within a few scenes, though there are one or two things to unlock that are back near the beginning. lots of things to remember where they are before you complete them. each scene has multiple things to do - hidden object scene, a puzzle or two, a couple of inventory items to find or use. this is not light on the interaction at all. the graphics are worthy, the audio was unobtrusive. no lag in between scenes. while this is not the most challenging game I've played, it has definitely kept my interest throughout the entire trial. it's rare that I buy a game the day it appears, but this is definitely the exception. Weak Story but Good Game Play I bought the CE version of The Revenge of the Witch and although I did enjoythe gameplay, it did fall short of being a great game that I expected, mainly because it unfortunately presented us with a rather weak plot that did not end with a bang but rather a dismal finish to what I hope will be the last that we see of this Witch. Isn't that the same with many sequels at the movies, some get better with each installment and then there are those that just should not have been made, ie: Speed 2 comes to mind. Not that this game was bad but still I was disapointed with the storyline and the lack of challenge in the overall gameplay. Once again the Witch is back and this time we need to save the city from her powers. Visually the game was up to par, supported by sharp graphics, good artwork and good voice-overs. Despite the weak story, it was a relatively good HOPA with three modes of gameplay that unfortuantely you cannot change during midplay. I really like to switch sometimes when things get hairy. Game features no map but a notebook. The inventory is ontop and that too was a bit of a distrction, I guess old habits die hard but I do love my inventory on the bottom. You have 5 chapters that do offer you a rather long gameplay. If you are a lover of puzzles then you are in luck, there are plenty of them, all fairly good and very well designed; I especially thought the acquarium puzzles were fun to play and somewhat frustrating. There were three types of HO scenes that were a mixture of finding objects, reverse objects and finding 20 of similar objects. I really enjoyed the game and despite the story, if you missed out on the CE version, then this is an ideal game for the price of a SE. I do congradulate the developers for the overall series and do look forward to a new storyline with great gameplay. I think we need to put this witch to rest now please and now need a new villian. Another Winnter Love this game as much as the other Echoes of the Past. I've developed enough confidence in the developer to now buy the Echoes games without a trial; the quality is terrific and reliable. This time, a magician's staff has been taken by the witch and its gems scattered about. You need to undo curses and find the missing gems. Lots to look at and do, plenty of interactive HOS and Put the Item Back scenes. There is quite a bit of backtracking. Although not excessive, an interactive map would be helpful. Has numerous puzzles that have been around awhile, but with a creative and refreshing twist. Gorgeous artwork and animation. Hints recharge swiftly, I've always found the Echoes games to be a good length for my casual play, but then I'm not one for 7+ hours for a game. August 17, 2012
A game with lots of puzzles but no storyline This is not one of the best games around & the story telling leaves a lot to be desired; the soundtrack is very repetitive & I know I have heard it in another game. The graphics are pretty average & the artwork quite medieval in style although rather ?green? in colouring. There are 3 modes of play; regular with a 15 second hint recharge, glints on every item of interest & sparkles to mark the HOs, advanced with no glints or sparkles & a 15 second hint or expert which has no hint or skip button. You get a journal that contains some clues & a staff for which you have to find 10 jewels through the game. The hint is useful; if you get stuck & click on it you will be shown a picture of where to go & a sparkle to show what object to investigate. Puzzles & finding items to open cupboards, chests & doors abound; in fact you will spend most of your time searching for something to use. In addition you will find that you have to search the same H0 scene more than once which is rather tedious, these are either the usual word list or a variation, put the objects back into the scene. Even though there are a lot of puzzles many of them recur & unfortunately by the time I had played the hour long bonus I was rather tired of the whole thing so I will not buy. I am however going to recommend this game as if you love to be busy then this hidden object game from Orneon may be for you. August 17, 2012
