ers so I got it
ERS games are great so I played for 30 min and got it for free. I would have bought it also. Great graphics and the sound is good. I love adventure games so this is up my alley. DO not care if there is no HOS. Looks like a good game to play. Try it.

A slightly 'PENUMBRA' Experience
This year on Mother's day, instead of recieving flowers, candies, hugs and kisses; we get murder and meyham while we set out to rescue a young girl from the clutches of a very creepy old dude and solve an old gruesome murder mystery that surrounds the very sinister looking Penumbra Motel. (Why I am not put off by this fact causes me some discomfort). I am a big fan of the developers and am slightly surpirsed at the direction that they took when creating 'Dark Alleys'. Unfortunately, to my dismay, this game is definitely not up to their usual high standard of games and the more I played, the more I felt let down. My major complaint was that there was absolutly nothing challenging about this game and I found it way too easy to play. Although I am basing my review on the demo, I doubt that things will change. It appears that the developers created an Adventure IHOG, only without the HOG scenes and yet the game mechanics are your usual run of the mill IHOG. (I hope that made sense). Unlike their previous games, such as the AZADA series, the challenge and fun factor that I eagerly anticipated and looked forward to just wasn't present here. Unfortuantely 'Dark Alleys' just did not thrill me nor did it offer me the challenge that I expect to find in an Adventure game. On the other hand, it would be remiss of me not to priase them for the artwork and the graphics and animation which I felt were very well done. Although they are grainy and rather gloomy, (unlike the graphics that I am accustomed to), they did create an atmosphere that suited the storyline and I especially liked the use of real actors which added some realism to the game. Game features include the journal, objectives, a SG that keeps your place and a film projector which you use to view cut scenes. There are three modes of game play and widescreen option. Game mechnics are the same that you see in any IHOG Adventure game: solve puzzles, collect objects for your inventory and play mini-games; unfortunately all of which were too easy to do which I found rather dissapointing. I honestly think that this game is slightly over-rated and should not have been issued as a CE. Sadly I think that the developers have missed the mark in their efforts to create an Adventure game that would appeal to hard-core palyers like myself. Had they offered some challenging features such as morphing objects, awards, achievments and complex mini-games, I probably would have enjoyed my gaming experience more but alas, despite the "look" and "feel"of the game, I got bored very quickly. It appears that 'Dark Alleys' offers you a slightly 'Penumbra' experience. I do however think that newcomers to this genre will enjoy this game and therefore I will recommend it. After all it is Mother's Day, and what better way to celebrate it than to spend it with your everyday psysho killers, demons and ghosts.

very disappointing - bonus game review at bottom
The only reason I bought it was knowing that it was this hyped up, long awaited ERS game so I thought it would be something special when it didn?t even come up to the standard of a good ?same old? game. Azada libro was far better than this, being a straight adventure game.
ERS concentrated on the live actors and seemed to not put as much effort into gameplay or plot or even some of their graphics. And although the lip synch in the actors was mainly good - when it wasn?t, it?s just so off putting. They are obviously trying to catch up to elephant and BFG with using them but just putting live actors into a ?C? adventure game isn?t being different and it doesn?t make a blah game good.
Plot was a mishmash of a nod to haunted halls and every other game ? mostly children in peril, and ending been done so many times. I?d forgive the tired plot if the gameplay wasn?t as tired. There was nothing new or exciting or even captivating about this game. There didn?t seem to be many new areas to explore. In the middle of the game, puzzles were few and far between and the lack of achievements or things to collect (which should be a minimum for a CE game) made the middle part of the game boring.
There was a puzzle which was a twist on the rotating rings puzzle and that was good but you had better like it as it kept repeating, getting slightly harder each time. The last hour suddenly got more interesting and had a couple of harder puzzles in it very close to each other, with some others. I would have loved if it had been spaced out a bit more, so I could have enjoyed them in amongst the same old tired gameplay. Most of the puzzles were on the easy side.
There was a choice of 3 settings of hardness for gameplay. I play on the hardest for ERS games as they are easy games to play. But I still got full explanations for all the puzzles even though they say there would be no tips and occasionally I still got the black bar tips which they also said wouldn?t be there. Do developers not know that when you play on advanced you don?t want any hand holding?
I think this should have been a SE game and not a CE game, when you think of games like phenoman: city of cyan and urban legends the maze were straight SEs (that were far better than this) I don?t understand how this was a CE. I haven?t been as disappointed in a game I bought for ages.
The plot was 100% tied up in the SE main game.
BONUS GAMEPLAY -
Actually the bonus gameplay was good, it was puzzle heavy so for those that don?t like puzzles or skip them then it will be super short. It took me 45 mins no skipping but if you find puzzles harder it will take you longer. I wish the main game was more like this. The setting was about 50% same area as before and 50% new. The one thing that was really bad about the bonus was the plot. But because the gameplay was OK by then, I didn?t mind too much.
Other bonus ? 4 music ?tracks? you hear being looped over and over during the game, screensaver, concept art, wallpaper
TIME ? main game ? 5hrs plus 45 mins in bonus
so in all quite a short game (compared to others)

Huh???
My review is based on:
1) completed the Collector?s Edition (CE) including bonus game
2) played on ?hard? level-no sparkles, but had in-game hints.
I had more fun trying to solve the mystery of why this game got so many 5-star reviews, than I did playing the game. I read all the reviews (93+me) after I completed the game. My conclusion is: Adventure Gamer?s (AG) have been so thirsty for non-Hidden Object Games (HOG) (me too), and even HOG enthusiasts are ready for a change, to the point AG & HOG gamers don?t want to discourage the game developer, ERS, from making more non-HOG adventure games, by giving the game a lower rating.
I don?t recommend the CE version of this game, but will recommend the SE version which is now available (2 days after I purchased CE, sigh). My impression is this game seemed like a full-length beta game (work still in progress), put out by ERS as an experiment to see if there is enough interest in reviving the non-HOG AG. If so, it worked; keep trying ERS!!!
Length: above average-based on many locations to explore, a few challenging puzzles and me missing a few inventory items at first glance
Story-- showed promised, but didn?t deliver. What happened ERS? I don?t get it. This game showed me the merits of some gamers placing a well written story at the top of their criteria list. Send the author(s) to some writer?s workshops then come back to us with more experience. As it stands now, the ?story? comes across as a rough draft with undeveloped characters, with shallow/no explanation of their presence or importance. The bonus game seems like an after thought to the story, like the writer said, ?oh, since I mentioned the name of this character in the main story, I better add him somewhere else in the game. I know, add him in the bonus game with a mwahaha (insert evil laugh), the end.?

Up my Alley
My review is based up the entire game plus bonus content. I have to take this opportunity to say how irritated I am with demo reviews. I can play the demo for myself. If you reject a game based upon something in the demo, that's not so bad to point out, but these long narratives on a 1 hour experience never get a "helpful" from me.
I won't go into all that has been said already. This game is light adventure. It's very linear. You won't be backtracking far, so you won't miss the map, and there are no HOs to slow down the action. Most of it is played in one major area at a time. The hint button is pretty useless, being of the "nothing to do here" variety.
What I always want to know with a CE is was the bonus content necessary to the story. I've played a couple where it was, and in a light, easier game, the story is everything to me. The bonus content added a little and was about another 60 - 90 minutes play. I'm not interested in the music or art work so much, or not enough to pay for it. I don't know that knowing what I do I wouldn't have enjoyed the SE just as much.
The story begins to go somewhere and then kind of falls off. There is one mystery character that you eventually catch up with and his story is told a little further in the bonus, but not really enough to make it worth it. You will accomplish your major directive in the main story - which is how it should be.
I played the game in "hard" - no sparkles YAY! And another thing I really enjoyed with this game are the immediate results when you click. No waiting for something to load or for an action to slowly complete.
I've played probably 400 HOs and adventure games. I'm a little harder core than BigFish offers, my favorite being the Lost Crown and the Dark Fall series, a class of games not available here, but all in all, Dark Alleys was a good experience. Fun, pretty light as far as challenge, and more a matter of following a small goal at a time to conclusion. I'd like to see more of this variety.

What an amazing game!
Wow, this game was absolutely fantastic! Though it's been classed as a hidden object game, it's really more of an adverture/seek and find game as there are no HO scenes in it. However, that didn't take anything away from it as the story, the amazing graphics, spooky atmosphere and scary audio couldn't have been better.
This game is sort of a mix of Shiver and Phantasmat, with all the scary details and fabulous storyline, but without the HO scenes.
If you liked either the Shiver games or Phantasmat, you'll love this one!
However, there is one tiny fault I have to mention as I'm sure people are expecting a lot of extra gameplay from the CE: The only con I can mention from the game is that the bonus chapter was very short and abrupt in ending. Doesn't really give you any extra info, so if you feel like you don't want to spent that little bit extra for the CE you won't miss much by waiting for the SE. BUT, and there a big but as I don't want to put you guys off, the game itself (without the bonus chapter) is very detailed and very long, so even without the bonus chapter you are getting an amazing game that will keep you busy for quite a while.

It's good but for me lacks something
I like the approach of going away from HO scenes and instead scattering items and parts that are important to proceed in the game all over the scenes. I just didn't like the game itself. Can't put my finger on as to why not, as these type of games are right up my street, so I think it may the story itself. I just couldn't get the feel of it.
The graphics are fine, a bit on the dark side, but things are easy to spot and the puzzles are easy enough not to get frustrated over them.
As I did like the game play itself, but just not the story, I gave it 4 out of 5 stars. As to be fair the game itself is great, the story just isn't for me. I'd really recommend trying this game and therefore recommend it too.
I won''t buy it as a CE, but probably once it gets released as a SE. If you're unsure, give it a spin in the free trial, you may like it.

Masterfully Done!
What I like about this game is that it was a great puzzle from beginning to end. I bought it after one hour of play as I was utterly entertained by the challenging but logical sequence of game play. The mini games are unique, and have varying degrees of difficulty. There are lots of small stuff cleverly hidden in the scenes, that are easy to miss if not paying close attention. I enjoyed the attention to detail, in the scenes and the art work. Good use of the dialoged of the characters, yet not overdone. Nice not to have hidden objects.
So kudos to the folks that came up with this one. My only real preference would be to have the same kind of game, but not so dark and gloomy.

Superb game
If you are expecting the usual ERS game then this game will disappoint because it is like nothing they have ever done before but that doesn't mean it isn't excellent because it is. It is adventure with mini games to play and can be quite challenging too, that for me is a big plus because I was getting quite fed up of the same old same old hidden object scenes and then use an item from the scene,
The graphics are different too but I think that adds to the overall atmosphere of the game. I don't know how long it is but I've been playing for hours now and I feel that there's still a lot more to play.

HALLELUJAH!! NO HIDDEN OBJECTS TO FIND!!
Love, love, love this atmospheric, very eerie, mysterious and uncomplicated, adventure-type game! Artwork is absolutely stunning! The plot thickens during game play. Not for little fishies, mind you as there is talk of violence.
Search for objects to interact with other objects minus hidden-object scene interruptions. I love HO Games, however, this is a welcome change! Thank you BFG and thank you to all the "thumbs up" Reviewers who helped me find this awesome game!! The Collector's Edition is a definite buy for me. Happy to add to my ever growing Collection--thanks to BFG Mother's Day Sale!! Enjoy! - Mama Mia-
