All puzzles, no hidden object I love puzzle games like this one, but they so often now have hidden object elements, which I don't care for. This one is all puzzles, which makes it that much more challenging and entertaining. It also has a good variety of difficulty levels, which makes it suitable for everyone. May 15, 2012
Fab game! Just love this game. Really has you thinking about what to do next, and where to go. Superb graphics too, A big plus point is that for a refreshing change there are no HO scenes. I was hoping that newer games would drop more of the HO scenes, as they can become tedious. My only annoyance is that in some puzzles if you put the cursor in the wrong place it takes you out of the puzzle, and therefore the skip system starts all over again. The music is relevant, and the use of real actors is a bonus. Of all the recent CEs this has to rank amongst the best! I'm playing expert mode, and to date there's no sparkles at all. And to reach the end of an iHOG without an hourglass in sight made my week! Hope this is part of a series... May 14, 2012
Love it! I have big expectations for ERS studio games because every one of their games i have played have kicked butt! So, i was not let down with dark alleys. its certainly different than most of their other games, in that it is more sinister than say, Amber maiden. the only thing that sort of bothered me was that there are no hidden object scenes, though you really hardly notice because the game sweeps you up and keeps you moving nicely along. Well done once again ERS studios. keep em coming! May 14, 2012
"Check me IN!" All the fun of a Great HOG but no Hidden Objects! *****One reviewer was upset that the main character was a woman. Get over yourself this is 2012 not 1912, heck we even got the vote now! I don't get all up in arms if the main character is a man, I am comfortable enough in my feminity! Thank you to the Video Game industry for representing! YAY Women buy games too! That being said...................... Wow! This game was a lot of fun! It had all of the aspects of a great Hidden Object game, but was not a hidden object game. It felt like it, but wasn't. It does have a lot of Great puzzles and a fab story line. I Highly recommend it! Norman Bates aside! My Only complaint about the game is that it was very short. I finished it in one night (granted, I could not stop playing as it is VERY absorbing!# But I did finish it in only one night. There is an extra chapter in the CE version, but I have not played it yet. I like this a lot. The graphics were good, the voice overs were not hideous #which sounds like being dammed by faint praise, but is, in actuality a very big compliment. If you play a lot of HOG you know that most of the voice overs are INSUFFERABLE and I usually just put it on Mute.) This one was not bad. The music was fun and actually very catchy. I found myself singing it when I went to run erands. All in all, this game is SUPER FUN! I Look forward to a sequel, but it's short so you may want to wait for the regular edition. Try the demo, but be warned, if you do, you will prob buy the game. It's awesome! May 18, 2012
Started Out Rocking My Socks Then Went Flat and Frustrating This review is for about 2 to 3 hours of the game. I know it wasn't over 3 playing the "middle of the road" as far as difficulty. The story: You're on a road trip and your friend's daughter is kidnapped by a mysterious man at the Penumbra Motel, the scene of murder and strange occurrences 50 years ago. Not only must you find the girl but unravel the town's secrets. This is what I would call an adventure game. While you're not navigating a character like the Nancy Drew games however you are 'wandering around" as this plays like a HOG where you get inventory to move forward in the game however no HO scenes to this game. 5 chapters plus bonus chapter and extras locked until you play the whole game. Strategy Guide: Only shows first two chapters during the trial time. A total of 53 pages. Pages 1-44 is the main game. Pages 45-53 is the bonus. 3 play modes and you can switch modes at anytime during the game as I checked all of them out.. Easy mode lots of sparkles and text clues. The harder modes do have some text clues up at the top when you click on something to help you along for some areas of the game not all. There is a diary which holds story/notes along with a goals tab which you have to hover your mouse over to see the goals. There is no map. There's also what looks like a tool box to me anyway down at the bottom which holds some puzzle pieces when you find them in the game and then when you come across a puzzle (some of the puzzles) that box opens up and places the pieces of the puzzle for you automatically. There's also voice overs along with real live actors and some cut scenes. The graphics dull and somewhat grainy. Now for my overall impression of the game here: I'll start off with what i liked: Well I was drawn into this game immediately with the opening scene and the girl going into the store and not coming back. What really had my attention is the story here as it made me think of the movie "Psycho." The out of the way gas station with a big house up the hill where the trouble begins. A suspicious family member who may still be lurking after all these years. The kid in the story even looks like Anthony Perkins/Norman Bates! The voice overs, characters, cut scenes I found to be very well done here. Just excellent. The graphics/artwork while not this developers usual nice, crisp and clear seemed somewhat dull, gloomy and grainy to me anyway but appropriate considering the surroundings (buildings) rundown. All this held my interest along with game play, no hints/skips even as it's different from this developers usual work during the trial of the game so I purchased it immediately when the trial was over. Now for what I didn't like and this game went flat for me and downright frustrating: After the one hour trial while i ran into two characters the story seemed to go flat and I found myself basically just wandering around from place to place to get stuff to move forward in the game. The music grated on my last nerve as it seemed to be about the same over and over. Then we have this goal button here which at first I thought it was broke but by accident my mouse/cursor just happened to be in the right spot and it brought up the goals so you can't click on it like the diary have to hover over it. I also didn't like the tool box as that about got on my last nerve as when I'd come to a puzzle it would open up and put the pieces in there but I didn't have all the pieces for the puzzle to even do it?? I found this annoying. When I finally did get all the pieces well way too many rotate the circle puzzles for me as I was find these downright boring and tedious and want to skip them. I did 2 or 3 of these then enough already. Where this really went down the hill for me and I finally had to stop all the madness, cut this off and pull the plug: When I want a hint/skip well I shouldn't have to wait until I finish my cigarette to get it. RIDICULOUS. I do like to figure out for myself is why I didn't play the easiest mode. i also don't like to refer to the guide too much so if I come to an area where there isn't a clue or I want to skip I don't mind waiting a minute or two but anything beyond that is RIDICULOUS. Overall I give this 3 stars and the best I can do for this. It started out rocking my socks and then went flat and frustrating for me. I play games for fun and escape and not to be frustrated. When it gets frustrating well I pull the plug. I'm so glad I only paid about $7.00 for this instead of the usual $13.99 cause of the weekend sale on game credits. I have no desire to even finish this game. Since I'm a slow game player i probably still had about 2 hours left to complete it but just don't care. Sorry. Thanks anyway Big Fish and developer of this game. As always definitely give it a whirl and decide for yourself.. May 15, 2012
ERS...I LOVE YOU! This game delivered and satisfied my appetite for an adventure game without hidden objects, served by none other than one of my favorite developers, ERS! I do enjoy hidden object games, but was in the mood for an adventure game with puzzles that kept the story and search going forward in lieu of stopping to search through hidden object scenes. The opening video was intriguing, and just the right amount of mystery to want to finish searching for the kidnapped child, all the while unraveling the mysterious Penumbra Motels' past. This game did remind me of Alfred Hitchcock's movie, Psycho. Of course, the excellent graphics were true to form from ERS, as well as the soundtrack to accompany the different scenes. The videos with live character interaction are always a PLUS in my book! The puzzles were fun to play and solve! I hope ERS continues to release these type of games, as well as continue with the excellent hidden object games! Thank you for a very enjoyable afternoon playing this remarkable and lengthy game! A lot of sizzle but the steak's gone off... Normally ERS games are an almost immediate buy and I'm always happy to see the logo pop up. Good, gorgeous games with a lot of thought behind them. Sad to say I did not find that true for this offering. First of all the story, which began quite intriguingly, spun off in untraceable directions - SPOILER - what did the clock maker have to do with the war? Why did the Dad want to kill the boy friend? What drove the family nuts? What did the locks have to do with the medals...? and on and on. It was like several good story ideas got mashed together into one big mess. The game mechanics were fine for the most part, though the mini-games seemed either ridiculously easy or overwhelmingly fiddly and/or difficult with very poor directions. One BIG no-no that had me growling is in more than one mini-game, objects needed in the puzzle were so close to the bottom of the screen that I inadvertently backed out of the puzzle, starting the SKIP timer over. Since many of the puzzles seemed overly difficult or were so terribly unclear I skipped many and I rarely skip. Hints were not helpful except to say you had nothing to do in an area, cursor was very picky, and while I understand inventory puzzles often have an illogical nature to them this game took the cake for having many items in inventory that *should* work in a situation but didn't OR things like needing to find an endless chain of *different* screw drivers as you go along because the many you found earlier you inexplicably dropped. Grrrrr... Art work great, sound good, though music was repetitive (this might have been heightened by my general annoyance) and duration good. Thing was on duration I wasn't having fun, so wrap it up already. :D I actually played the Bonus chapter on easy to get it over with. I NEVER play on easy. Tons of potential but an over-all fail in my estimation. I'd give it a 2.5 but since I can't it bumps to a 3 for content. Lots there, just not the best of what could be. May 14, 2012
Not! Well, I must be "one of a kind," because I didn't find this game particularly fun. I can't remember the last time I gave "poor" on any game. The graphics were nice, music okay, sound good, game play good. The story didn't grab me at all, nor did it keep my attention and make me want more when the demo ran out. It is lacking in something, maybe a HOG here and there to break the same old same old. I'm sure this would be a very nice game for a beginner (and that is the only reason I am recommending the game), but just not for me. May 13, 2012
Totally Excellent! ERS has done it again! Beautiful Graphics, outstanding spooky Music, and a really great Story line. The ending in the extra Gameplay was Awesome too, although it would have been nice if we were given the option of accepting or rejecting the Villian's offer. 5 Stars all the way because for me I wouldn't mind playing it again. I absolutely loved this Game and highly recommend it! May 14, 2012
Great game I really liked this game, it combines high-quality graphics, interesting story and unobtrusive and yet addictive gameplay. I went through it in one breath. Also, I really liked what I was constantly on their toes. Thank you. May 14, 2012
