Bonus game was huge disappointment
Absolutely loved this lengthy game (which other reviewers talk about quite well) but I want to voice my opinion on the bonus game which I just finished playing. HUGE disappointment. It was short, uninteresting, and obviously an after thought. It was almost as if someone else had developed the main game and some else took over to do the bonus. But the main game is GREAT !!! Glad, at least, I got it on sale. I would have waited for the SE version and been JUST as happy!

A Poor Showing from this Developer
I normally love all the games from this developer, but what were they thinking when they released this one??
It's like they couldn't agree on the subject matter, so they ended up with an "Occult-Monster plant-SciFi-Magical-Medieval" mess! At the very beginning of the game, after choosing to bypass the tutorial, the tutorial pops up anyway. Not a big deal, but why bother asking? Anyway, here's where the "story" begins. You and your daughter are new in town and want to check out some schools. So a school bus, not a public transportation bus, takes you to a school that's been closed for 40 years and leaves you there. After noticing that the school looks "gloomy", you spot some creepy plants with eyes, but you're not too concerned about them. All of a sudden * POOF * your daughter, who was standing next to you, disappears. But, that obviously doesn't bother you either, because you don't say a word about it. Then a poorly drawn witch appears and tells you she finally has the last child she needs, and disappears. You then see a man sitting on the ground, babbling about how everything is all his fault and he wants you to locate all the missing pages to his journal. That's when the witch comes along and he disappears too. And again, you do not seem overly surprised at this. Wish I could tell you more, but that's when I exited and uninstalled the game. A lot of reviewers gave this a high rating -- maybe the storyline didn't matter to them, but I found it utterly ridiculous.

Gothic Fiction:Dark Saga Collectors Edition
Very good graphics and lots of different things to do.I played the hours trial.I found the puzzles easy to do and know my 11 year old son would love it.Has lots of monsters and armour.
I would buy the game just for the graphics and puzzles that I have not had the opportunity to do before but for those looking for a challenge it is probably a little to easy.

Will good defeat evil ?!
Played 30 minutes, casual
- ERS
- 3 modes Casual, advanced, hard, you can change mode while playing
- Note book
- Map, you can't use it to jump from one location to the other
- You've got to find pages to complete the witch's book
- Integrated SG that shows only 2 chapters, stays on the page you leave
- Live characters
- Voice overs
- Hint (only indicates you have nothing to do outside H0)
- Didn't come across any H0 in the time I played
- Skip button takes a minute to refill
- Mini games not too difficult, quite attractive

Another evil witch kidnapping kids...will we be able to defeat her ? A buy for me.

Lots of Fun
I really liked this game had no HOS for a good change of pace. Some games just have to many. I really enjoyed this one. I did miss some pages in the book and you cannot finish without them.

I thought I might miss the hidden object scenes......
....but, I didn't! I read several reviews of the game that mentioned there were no hidden object scenes in the game and that it was WAY more adventure than hidden object. I decided to give it a try, anyway, due to the weekend sale. From the moment the game opens, it's not the same old thing in many respects. The opening screen animations are wonderful and you haven't even started the game yet! The regular options are available - sound and music levels, and three levels of play. I always choose the easier level because I'm not an accomplished player and I need help along the way. The music was appropriate and the environmental sounds were all good, but I found it necessary to lower the volume on both, but I usually do, so you'll need to judge that for yourself. The graphics are great - wonderful colors and textures with very few "dark" or "grainy" issues. Due to the game's content, nothing is very bright, but brightness would have conflicted with the creepy story, but very few items are hard to find at any place in the game. There are no hidden object scenes, but you do need to find items for your inventory. Some you'll carry for awhile, while others are used almost immediately. There is the regular gameplay - nothing remarkable about that - find inventory, use inventory, and move the game along, and this one does that well. I never felt bogged down and only felt a bit lost once. The hint system is of little help, and you oftentimes get some version of "nothing to do here", but, when it's right, the hint system will let you know where to go and what to do...just don't depend on it for lots of help. The integrated strategy guide stays where you leave it and is clear and concise. The storyline - rescue your daughter from the creepy creatures and the witch - is an old one, but well done. The creepy factor is great - everything moves and watches you..and it's the basic "good winning over evil" game, but it's fun, with fairly easy puzzles, with an old, but well done story, and decent length of play. It took me about 5 hours over two evenings to complete the main game and bonus offering. Give this game a try, even if you're like me - one who really prefers the whole hidden object scene thing - the game is compelling enough, with so much to do, that you don't miss the hidden object scenes at all. Give it a try..especially now that it's on sale!
Oh - a small negative..pack your walking shoes, as there is LOTS of back and forth. A jumping map would have made this game stellar.

Definitely a buy!
Another fantastic game from ERS developers! For people who are unaware, this is not a typical HOG game. There are no HOS in this. It is really a great adventure game. I love the creatures!!!
I thought the graphics were incredible and the voice-overs, which usually annoy me, were good. I did get a little tired of them telling me to back off..over and over again. I get it, you don't want me here! Other than that, awesome game and I will buy!!

Wow, What a Great Game!
I'm very impressed with this one! There was so much I loved about it! The graphics were beautiful, the real people in the cutscenes were great and even down to the most small detail like the cursor being a hand wrapped around a sword and changing to the "grabbing hand" was so cool. The eyes on the vines would follow everywhere the cursor went and at every step and turn, there was something surprising. Even though I just played the demo, there was not yet one HO scene but instead, things to grab along the way and many mini puzzles to solve which were not very difficult on advanced play until I got to the circuitry board which I had to skip just so I could move on in the demo and not waste too much time. This is a must have game because it is so full of adventure!

ERS Disappointment...Fo-getta-bout-it!!
Played Demo immediately when BFG first released over the weekend and then promptly uninstalled. Storyline was flat, utterly ridiculous and boring.
Storyline--What parent is going to travel internationally, enroll and then TRANSPORT their child to a "school' that looks like your worse nightmare?
BFG Members, such as myself, rely on reliable reviews and I don't understand the rave reviews.
So, I did a little digging here on BFG and happily discovered a tad bit older games that are less the "dog-and-pony show" act and more "creative"--in my humble opinion, such as the "Strange Cases" series.
Typically, ERS Developers release excellent games--"Haunted Halls, Grim Facade, Redemption Cemetery" and also a fun and light-hearted series "Steve the Sheriff".
For new BFG Members, welcome! If you like this game, great, however, if not, there are many AWESOME games here on BFG both new and older.
Enjoy! -Mama Mia-

A little less hand-holding, please
There were a few tricky bits but overall this felt like a game for beginners - Far too much assistance and no real challenge, even on the hardest mode. Add in massive back-tracking and it's more tedious than fun.
Mini games were simple, ridiculously so at times. (A jigsaw with six pieces? Really?) It was very disappointing, especially because Ers is usually so good at adding a new twist to the classic ones.
The hardest thing about using inventory items was remembering where you needed to backtrack to use them. Even then, the game would randomly open portals to take you there. When that didn't happen, there was much jogging. An interactive map would have been very helpful.
A few scattered H0 scenes would have been nice. It would have been a relaxing break in all the running around, offered a base level of challenge, and gave the game a decent length. (My time was 4 hours for the main game, on hard mode with no hints or walkthrough.)
Art is up to Ers standards which is good because you get repeated views of each scene.
One saving grace are the 25 pages of a diary to find. Those are difficult to spot, tucked away in odd corners and easy to overlook. Probably the hardest part of the game. I thought I had missed one but that didn't stall the ending.
The bonus content is not related to the main story. It is a bit short (45 minutes on hard mode) but the game play is slightly better than the main game. There was one association puzzle that quite good but again, not very difficult. That didn't save it, it isn't worth the extra cost.
This game felt rushed and not very well planned. There were several good concepts that seemed to be leading somewhere but then they just petered out. It felt as if only the artists had made the deadline, everyone else just scrambled to get the game released.
I really can't recommend this game at all. It would be better to replay one of Ers' old games than buy Gothic Fiction.
