Haunted Halls: Revenge of Doctor Blackmore Collector's Edition 4.3 5 72 72
Disappointed I hardly ever buy CEs. This reminds me why. The demo was really exciting and interesting and convinced me this would be a fun and somewhat challenging game. (I don't like too much challenge and want my games to flow right along, but I don't want them too easy either.) The graphics are beautiful and the sound was OK, if a bit annoying. Great whimsy and fun in the the beginning that collapsed quickly after the demo. There are four and a half "chapters" and the bonus chapter. Once you've completed one, the others are duller and duller and duller repetitions of the first. I wish I could detail a few of the things that drove me crazy, but that would spoil it for those of you who decide to buy the game and go forward. Those who have finished will know exactly my beef. In addition, all of the parts are strewn with illogic and physics that simply does not begin to work in the real world. Nothing makes any sense. There were several times when I was stumped, went to the guide and found out there was no way I could have deduced the required activity, including a rather odd use for a chameleon. Some of the HOs required one to find an object that was either invisible or simply not what was described. The "not as described" were not differences in interpretation, but generally whole random things. There were not a lot of these and I would not have commented on them, if the rest of the game hadn't annoyed me so much. There's also an activity that requires the player to make a concoction MANY TIMES during the game. Once was fun, but since it didn't really advance the play, way before I got to the last one, I was REALLY tired of having to do it. Finally, it's short. Maybe it's short because it's easy. Maybe it's just short, but it's too short for a CE. Sorry folks. June 14, 2013
Awful It may seem unfair to critique a game I only played for 10 minutes, but there was nothing to interest me and draw me into this game. Dr Blackmore is half man and half octopus....and you start off the game being in what appears to be some confinement chair and mental hospital. The slithering tentacles are disgusting and the noise of the static close circuit TV is like nails on a chalk board. There was no reason for me to waste my time on even a free trial. The storyline or anything hidden couldn't be entertaining enough to discover. September 30, 2012
