REVIEW OF COMPLETED GAME Not to my taste. Nothing to do with the spiders, just the game play was not very interesting. The wide screen graphics were very good. Not many colours, but great use of lighting. Also, the large mechanical insects were beautifully designed. Too many number puzzles, too time consuming, one after the other. Still, there are others which show some ingenuity, just not enough of them. Dull. Too many iHOS, sometimes one straight after another in the same spot. Would have been better if they had let us find both items in a single iHOS. The synchronization between speech and actors was way off and far too slow. Sorry I cannot vouch for the length. I have just had too many interruptions over the last few days and lost track, but definitely not short and a good BC for the full hour. Let's you see how the whole thing began. Music unremarkable. Story a bit of a stretch, but then aren't they all. Good SG but easier and quicker to use the hint button, because the jump map, whilst appreciated, is not really very helpful. It does not indicate where one needs to go next. Pretty hit and miss. Overall I found most of it quite run-of-the-mill. There is a lot fo competition out there and this is just too ordinary. Wonderfully creative environment, fun game, wish it were longer... My review title sums up my feelings after completing the game. I'm still in the midst of the bonus chapter. I was honestly surprised when the game ended, given the size of the file (nearly 1GB) and the fact that it was a CE I expected it to be significantly longer than it was. I did not check the walkthrough before purchasing; perhaps I should have. Good: Truly creative environment, beautiful graphics, nice art nouveau style with interesting little details throughout. I loved the art direction - from the initial title page (creative way to display the game's title) I was hooked, and expected to be engaged in my environment, and I was. I loved that aspect of the game. The puzzles/mini-games were fun, some were challenging, some were easier, but none were boring. I had to work out 2 of them on paper before completing. I'm not a huge fan of mathematic puzzling, but I overcame my initial sigh+eww reaction and felt a sense of satisfaction upon completion. So-So: the storyline was okay, not completely engaging, not off-putting. It could have been more involving, I think, as it played out rather routinely and quickly. For example, the potential for some further interaction between the two mechanical antagonists (all I'll say so as not to spoilerfy) would have been fun. I, as the hero/ine, could have utilized the "good" one more extensively, let's say. There was potential there, imho, that was too quickly resolved. Bad: Aside from the length (again, way underutilized potential), the dialogue and voiceovers were strangely s..l..o..w. I don't understand why. At all. Way too slow, and since you couldn't skip ahead in the dialogue (say if you read at a faster pace than these people spoke, meaning if you had a reading ability greater than a second grader), you could only skip the entire thing or listen to all... of... it..., there is the potential to miss important facts out of frustration. Given the attention paid to the graphics, the style, and the puzzles, this entire dialogue issue felt jarringly weird. All of that said, I was hugely disappointed when the game was over so quickly. I was enjoying myself (sat and drank my coffee during the dialogue cut scenes or filed my nails ;) ). I was not ready to be done with the game. Recommended. October 22, 2012
Didn't quite reel me in I did like the theme of this game because it's different from others but I just wasn't overly impressed with the game itself. The graphics were ok and sound was alright but when it came to the "old man" in the bug museum talking, it was terrible! It looked like he didn't know his lines and he kept looking down as if he was somehow reading his script after every 2 or 3 words. The HO scenes were alright and the map was good to be interactive in getting somewhere quickly and the mini games seemed to be pretty good. Spiders creep me out but knowing it's just in the game helps me to handle them. I really wish every game coming out now didn't have to be a collector's edition because first I don't want to pay that much and secondly, most aren't really worth it. BF please let more SE games come out more often. October 14, 2012
Black widows reign! I loved this game! A lot of thought went into it because it was very well done. The graphics are very clear & crisp & I loved the music. If you really don't like spiders, it's not for you. I don't really like them but I thought the storyline was very unique. I would definitely buy this game. October 15, 2012
Stunning graphics on a mediocre game The graphics in this game were clear and crisp, and were very well done. The rest of the game was found wanting..... The cut-scenes were extremely slow and out of sync - probably due to the use of live characters.. Except for the graphics, the game wasn't what I consider to be CE callibre. There were no bonus objects to find. No achievements to earn. The puzzles and hidden objects were basic level. The storyline was....not really sure you could call it a story. Something about a woman who liked spiders, but not husbands. Not the slightest bit riveting, which resulted in the game becoming boring and tedious. The game was a just passable length. The bonus chapter was probably the best part of the game. The puzzles were slightly harder, and the storyline was more a prequel from another character POV, and was also far more interesting than the main game. I think if you like the first hour of play, then get the CE version, but if you are on the fence about it, then see what else is around first. October 20, 2012
A Great Game for Arachnophiles As I absolutely love spiders, I really enjoyed this game. I bought the Collector's Edition and really glad I did because that part tells you how the little girl Morgana becomes the Black Widow in the main game. Her little spider is really cute. Anyway back to the main game. You are a detective and go to Andville where there has been a series of murders. Everywhere you look there is evidence of spiders, huge webs and people who have been cocooned. The mysterious lady called the Black Widow is responsible for all this. I especially liked the video scenes. The fight between a massive metal spider and a huge wasp on top of the radio tower was one of my favourites. The actors were a bit wooden and slow I thought. If you buy the C.E. you can look again at these cut scenes. There is also the usual wallpapers and music, screensavers and such. You can also replay the puzzles. I found some of the puzzles so tricky that even with cheating with the Strategy Guide. I still ended up skipping them. Some of them were too long and laborious for my taste. Still I think the game has some replay value. As you can use the three settings, Easy, Hard and Difficult as in most of these kind of games. I will reiterate what other Fishies have said not one for arachnophobes! Enjoy. Luv Cam November 12, 2012
Great Game and I hate Spiders LOL I just finished playing this game and the bonus content. The story line was awesome, graphics as well. The only thing about the game that annoyed me is whenever you click on something, even if you don't have what it needs, the text "i could use something here" came up. After a while it became redundant. Otherwise I loved the game. Bonus content really glued it all together. Mini games were good too. A game worth buying to all of you HOG addicts like me :) Happy Playing!! October 20, 2012
BEST GAME SINCE THE RAVENHEARST SERIES! OMG...I was SO impressed with the quality of this game; the graphics are so stunning and detailed, it's as if I was there, wandering the web covered streets of Andville, dodging that gorgeous but deadly woman in black and her 8 legged minions. I applaud the designers vision and artistry in this game. The story is unique, the characters fun, (I got a kick out of the bumbling firefighter# the mini games original, and the HO scenes had just enough challenge. The other reviewers go into more mechanics and detail, but I wanted to make sure it got 5 stars from me! This is definitely one of those games I will replay several times. I HIGHLY recommend it! I hate spiders, #but not as much as bees) but didn't mind the ones in this game. The absolutely gorgeous scenery, interesting objects and spooky atmosphere ease the fear! Definitely worth the price!!!! Thanks, BF! Something super awesome to tide me over until MCF in November!!! =-) October 16, 2012
Great game except for the "actors" Think of how good this game could have been if the developers had skipped the lousy human "actors" and just drawn all the characters. The over emoting is painful to watch. However the spiders and scenery are fantastic, 5 for them, Luckily you can skip most acting scenes and you can turn off the voices and music.. Nice creepy graphics, good HOG scenes, the usual minigames for the most part. Love the map to facilitate moving from place to place. Wish the Bonus game had been the full game, I want a spider helper too! October 16, 2012
Will wait for the SE Just finished the demo which I enjoyed despite all the spiders..lol. What I am not a big fan of, is the real life actors who take forever to say what they need to say and you can't hurry them along, all you can do is skip the dialogue then you miss something important! The storyline is a bit different, the puzzles good but HOS very easy. All in all I do not feel inspired enough to buy the CE so will wait for the SE. October 15, 2012
