Twisted Lands: Origin 4.3 5 83 83
Loved It I am a fan of Twisted Lands and this game is the prequel that takes me back to where it all began. As Detective, I have been hired by my old friend to investigate the disapearance of his daughter Yeresa. My ship lands on the docks of the infamous Island of Tormente where I am about to enter a world of twisted horrors and discover the cause behind the disapearance of it's inhabitants. Once again a super game from one of my favorite developers, and even better, a SE game at that. As always, the graphics are crisp and the artwork stunning. I love the waterpaint look in games which may seem nostalgic, but still looks beautiful. Game menu offers custom cursor and two game modes, Regular and Expert. Game features include great voice overs, sound effects, a journal with a task list, a map along with a compass to show you possible routes. There is also a mysterious box that relates the entire mystery, where you need to collect items to place in it. The only disapointment was that the map was not interactive so be sure to bring your extra pair of boots, there is alot of backtracking involved. Game play is standard HOPA with beautiful cut scenes, interactive HO scenes, mini games and puzzles to solve. The challenge is really involved with getting to each scene and using your inventory items. There are alot of places to go and much to do as you slowly begin to discover the horrors that lay before you. Some people may not enjoy all the travelling, but in expert mode, I do love the fact that there are no sparkles and no hand holding, so a walkthrough will be needed in some cases. Mini games are relatively easy and HO scenes are junk-piled and only slightly interactive. I know that many will not find this an outstanding game but for those who have played Twisted Lands, they will definitely appreciate the many hours of fun gameplay as well as going back to the begining of was once a very spooky story. Great game and a great time to be had. August 18, 2012
I played for 15 minutes and decided to buy This one has a few twists (no pun intended). The game description mentions "interactive cinema". I was curious about that and I won't spoil it for you. Plus 1 for that. As the previous reviewer mentioned, there is a box, which has a map and from what I can tell, you will interact with that map as you accomplish certain things in the game. The in game narrative uses voice over which is nice. The dialog also uses voice overs. For me, the best thing about this game is the story line. I am already involved enough to want to know what happens next. "Full Screen" doesn't fill my monitor. There are black bars on either side of screen. This doesn't bother me, but many of you mention this in reviews and comments, so I thought I'd note it here. There is a compass in the lower left hand corner. From what I can tell, you click it and directional arrows appear. Click it again and they disappear. This seems redundant because when you put the cursor towards the bottom the the screen, these arrows appear anyway. The journal includes: another map, indicating current location and locations with tasks to perform; a task list, and notes. I like the style of the graphics and I like the background sound effects. I always turn music volume to zero, can't comment on that. I like the fact that it is an SE offering. I do purchase a lot of CE's, but only because I am impatient and don't want to wait. I really don't consider CE games worth the price. A few are, but very few. So as always, try it. I predict you'll like it. August 18, 2012
How Awesome I really enjoyed the free demo on this & bought it The story was a 'grab-you-at-the-start' type you can play this game without playing the other the graphics/music are good two play modes **sneaker Alert*** I, for once, enjoyed the back & forth movement as it was fun to try & remember this object goes to that scene the HINT works outside of the HOS The Voice overs & in between scene are well done & move the storyline along well overall a really good SE game for more than an hours entertainment August 18, 2012
Best of the Series In my opinion, "Twisted Lands:Origin", is the best of the series. If you liked "Twisted Lands", you'll love this game. The graphics are excellent; the music adds tension to the game instead of being annoying. The cut scenes give you insight into what is going on and background of the story. The mini games, while not all new, are challenging without being frustrating. The HO scenes, however, are fairly easy. I like the fact that they are spread apart--not one scene after another. After playing as many HOG's as I have, one tends to get kind of jaded. This renewed my interest and was an immediate buy for me. Enjoy, Fishies! August 18, 2012
Not great, not bad (except for the last 2 chapters.) A basic HOPA with a decent story, interesting puzzles and moody art but not half as good as the previous game. It includes a new twist that is interesting but under-used. During the game there are some interactive moments with the detective'. The first time this happens, you are being chased and need to choose whether to go over or under a wall. It's a very tense and gives that moment drama. It really worked. After that, there is no choice. You are simply telling the detective what to do. It's pretty pointless. There is quite a bit of running back and forth during the first half. The map shows which areas have something to do which helps keep the backtracking to a minimum. By the second half, the game is more linear. - Find the thing that needs a piece, play an HO or look around the scenery, find piece, use piece to unlock a mini-game. Fairly standard stuff. Nothing very inspired but a decent mix. And then you get to the last two chapters which are the reason this game gets 2, not 3, stars. There are very few mini-games. After you find whatever piece, you put it into something that looks as if it was supposed to be a mini-game but is just decoration. You just run between H0 scenes and overly-simply inventory items. It was so tedious that I only finished it to see if it would get worse. This game is very formulaic. It feels as if the developers were very excited at first but then got bored or ran out of time. Memory required for this challenging game The Twisted Lands: Origin is twisting (pun intended), travelling, challenging game where the demo hour passed before I even realized it. It was beautifully done artisically and the music was appropriate and not annoying. There are so many things to find from the very beginning and your inventory doesn't end up with much in it as you want to use that item as soon as you get it. The map is not interactive but extremely helpful if you remember that you have to go left instead of right when reading it. The hint button is very helpful in telling you what to do next if you get confused where you are supposed to go and it refills quickly. The storyline is compelling and you get involved from the very beginning. The hos were somewhat junky and some items are a little difficult to find. The puzzles that I ran across were not difficult in the least. There is a lot of travelling back and forth, but I did not become frustrated with it, unless I was having to remember where something was which is why I stated that memory is required for this game. Also objects must be purchased from the lady by the bridge, so keep a look out for coins in your journey. Overall I really loved this game and fully recommend it. August 18, 2012
Give it a chance This is a really great game. I'm not sure what the chemistry is that makes one game click and another not, but this one does. I am in the "intermediate" category in terms of skill. Have been slow to move to games that are not collectors editions without strategy guides as I hate having to go back and forth to walkthroughs. Also I am not a fan of games that make one go "back and forth, back and forth." In this game however, the back and forth is an integral part of the game. And there's a map to jog one's memory when you're stuck. Check your inventory and you're on your way. The HOG scenes are not too easy and not too many, very nicely done without incongruous items (like hot dogs or doughnuts in a cemetery) in the scene. Puzzles not hard but not super easy. Storyline is intriguing and I hadn't played the preceding game but found this game was fun and understandable without that. Great game and definitely worth the price/coupon of an SE Makes me want to check out the game that it's supposed to provide storyline to precede. Thumbs up, including the music. August 18, 2012
WOW Brilliant This is a must buy game. Within the first few minutes you are taken in to a world of intrigue. The story line is great with twists and turns. The HOG are very good you travel from one scene to another with ease and you find yourself totally engrossed in the story line. This game has been very well put together and thought out for maximum pleasure. I have not played such a good game for quite a while. Its great. The hint button is very useful and precise, you have to really think about where to use the objects you find, and the story slowly unravels its self. Fantastic is the only way I can describe it. This game gets a +++++ August 18, 2012
Man did I hate this game! Despite the rave reviews I was surprised and disappointed to find game play obnoxious, tedious, and just not my cup of tea. Let me explain - The graphics are crisp and detailed with beautiful scenes and a lot of areas to investigate so that's a good start right? There was no map allowing direct jump to locations, showing active areas, and areas complete, but many games don't offer these niceties as yet so-no biggy, we can't have everything. Now the rub - This game is a constant, onslaught of hunting around for random special shape after random special shape that will be fitted into a waiting something, like a box, desk, drawer, gravestone, etc. This then grants access some small thing advancing game play. But what about the mini-puzzles? You can send me all over the place looking for all kinds of silly things as long as there is a good mini-puzzle pay-off at the end. Not so here. The gamer schlepps from place to place collecting the odd sun, moon, silver medallion, and blah, blah, blah, then on to the next. A bit like filling out a grocery list. Sure a light sprinkling in the right context of this mindless searching for fun shaped pieces can add charm in doses. However, a seemingly random, relentless stream, with no apparent meaning or connections and most importantly few/none mini-puzzles sucks the fun right out. **spoiler alert on** As example, to find a trucker's key to his rig, we must first find a gold heart. The gamer then travels to a construction site where the gold heart fits into the lid of a red velvet box that is inside a crusty, worn out wheelbarrow next to a greasy hard hat. Inside the velvet box there is a picture of a large, middle-aged construction worker, next to the picture is the needed truck key. Seriously? This trucker carries a velvet box that opens with a golden heart to work? Probably the only reason he wasn't covered in bruises by bullies in the pic was that he was a pretty big guy and could take care of himself. **spoiler alert OFF** Despite my initial intense dislike for the game I couldn't ignore all of those rave reviews, so I played for several hours trying to keep an open mind and hoping things would settle out. I didn't really get any of that - just a Migraine moment. For me a game is beautiful graphics, cohesive, intriguing storyline, interesting characters, challenging mini-puzzles, and a well thought out ending. Things absent in this game. If I am off-base and missing the point all together please feel free to tell me. I would appreciate it being set straight. Sorry I can't recommend. September 4, 2012
Good game Nice to play, lots of HOG, object easy to find. A lots of walking back and fort. There is a map but you can't jump from different area. I played in hard mode, there is no sparkle. The Hint will tell you where to go. Short game because I did half of it in the hour demo. You have to collect coins to buy objects you will help you in the game. August 18, 2012
