Dark Tales: Edgar Allan Poe's The Gold Bug Collector's Edition 3.8 5 104 104
Nice solid hidden object (mostly) game I like the style this game company uses for its games. They have other lines besides Dark Tales. The story line doesn't intrude on playing the game, but if you want to follow it, you certainly can. The puzzles are familiar, but I play not to be frustrated but to be entertained and challenged a bit. If you want really hard puzzles, not your game. Sometimes there is no directions for the puzzles, but after working them a bit, you intuitively get what to do. HOS are fine--not a list but objects to find, combine sometimes, and so on. If there are lists, I haven't played far enough yet. I know some who review are expert and such, and I'm not. I like a game where I can make some headway with some head scratching, but not get stumped and never get further without going for help. January 10, 2013
The Golden Bug Is Creepy, Crawly Fun! ERS has put out another great game. As with previous Dark Tales: Edgar Allan Poe, Dupin as called for your skills as an inspector to help his friend who is obsessed with finding the treasure of Capt. Kidd. But, as to be expected, there are dangers along the way in the form of a masked man and a woman who always wears a veil. There is a mix of HO and placing items where they belong. The mini games were fun-not too challenging. The graphics were clean. The VO were well done. Even the bugs were nice to look at. And of course your new helper, a Newfoundland, is adorable. This is a great game and one well worth playing. So go a little "buggy" and give it a try. January 10, 2013
A "must have" for Dark Tales - Fans... Once more, Detective Dupin needs your help... Interesting investigations, graphics: typical ERS-style - clear and detailed. As always: 3 modes to choose, can be changed during the game. We have a journal and a helpful hint (showing you, where to go next) Together with the inventory we have a very cude Newfoundland, helping us with his sniffing abilities, when needed. When he is barking, you should look in your inventory for an item marked with a pawprint. Show this item to your doggy-friend and he will react immediately.... HOS are very interactive, some with integrated puzzles, that's fun!! We have enjoyable minigames - not too challenging. As I am not fond of the offered bonus-contents, such as soundtracks, wallpapers, screensavers etc. I'll wait for the SE... January 10, 2013
OOOHLALA Dupin Is BAck Again! Dark Tales presents Edgar Allen Poe's famous tale of the Golden Bug. Once again we join the ever so handsome Dupin in his quest to help his friend LeGrand who is obsessed with finding Captain Kid's lost treasure; his only clue is the Golden bug. Your adventure begins as you follow the clues as well as solve the mystery behind the sinister masked figure who seems to impeding your investigation. Is he a Friend or Foe? That remains to be seen. As always the Bunny Team brings us a good HOPA game with their usual standards that include good graphics, voice-overs, great storyline, along with three play modes. Extras include HO mini-games, puzzles, and something new: a collection of desktop calanders to choose from. Game features include a journal and accompanying you is a georgous Newfoundland Dog that will retrieve hidden items with the use of his nose. I have noticed that the developers are getting more creative with HO scenes that are very interactive with puzzles to solve within each scene, making them both challenging and fun to play. The frequent minigames that are also interesting, not difficult but nevertheless entertaining. Overall, the game has interesting moments and although lacking in challenge, I found that the story along with the HO scenes and mini-games make up for the fact that as always, our developers continue to forgo game features like collectables or achievements. Unfortunately the SG only shows you two chapters which begs the question as to how long this game is. I personally have no use for extras such as wall papers or screen savers and try to adhere to my own personal set of standards as to what qualifies a CE game. I am therefore reluctant to spend the extra pennies on this version and will wait for the SE version. Nevertheless, It is a good game with a different take on HO scenes that I expect it will become popular amogst many players. I do applaud the developers for their innovativeness and cannot wait for the SE version to come out. For now, Dupin will just have to make do without me. January 10, 2013
A Good Game - Just not a Good CE game In my opinion, CE games must have certain qualities to separate themselves from the regular Standard Edition, I just played the demo, so this is not really a review of the game, but just a few observations: - There are no collectables, no morphing objects, no achievements. - There is no map - I loved the one Hos scene I did play, it is not your typical HOS, but one where you find one object that leads to finding another and so on. The game itself is just your standard 3 star game, nothing stands out for me at all. The graphics are typical, but nothing to really write home about, the voice overs are so, so. When I purchase a CE game it at least must have some achievements and collectables - something that will separate it from an SE version. However, I did like enough of the story and the gameplay to purchase this later as an SE game. At least that is one man's opinion. - gnashif January 10, 2013
Dupin is back and so are you ! Amazing ! Played 45 minutes of the demo when my average time is 20 !! Played Casual. - ERS :P - 3 modes, casual, advanced, real detective mode, you can change from one to another while playing - Integrated SG which only shows 2 chapters - Voice overs - Notebook - Shortly after starting the game, you get a dog, Arthur, he will help you through the game - H0 are quite interesting, in some you have to find silhouettes and ...to find the objects you have to play mini mini games, quite fun. Some of them are regular H0 where you interact. - Good mini games - Hint button - Skip button - Very good graphics I have all the other Dark Tales (shame, the sale is of no use to me :S ) and I really loved this one. Dupin is such a smart guy !! A straight buy for me... January 10, 2013
Very Good HOS/Adventure Game Outside of HOS, this is an intuitive adventure mystery game. You have to ask yourself, "What would work here?" "Where would I use this object?" etc. In casual mode, puzzles and HOS are fairly easy. Excellent strategy guide, with both text and pictures. There is a good journal, as well. Good vocals that match the characters. Music similar, but a little different than previous Edgar A. Poe games. Hints are good in and outside of HOS. You are given a Newfoundland hound to sniff objects that you place on him, then he follows the scent to other objects/tasks. The dog is next to the hint so you have to be careful not to click on the wrong thing. Gold beetles, which are called "Bugs" play an important part in this adventure. There are beetles/bugs of other colors as well, in puzzles, HOS, etc. This is a fun game, if you like adventures. January 10, 2013
Nothing Special... I am completely disappointed with this offering! I LOVE this series and own all the rest but this one isn't even on the same level as the others AND compared to what Ive seen ERS do in their last couple games, this one is a HUGE step backward. Mac users get a full hour to play, not a sample version SO I made it into chapter 3 with the doctor house being on fire and some other things going on AND with the exception of the first couple puzzles which drew me in and then that awesome hidden object silhouette puzzle, it goes back to list hidden object scenes. In fact, it goes from back to back to back list hidden object scenes in the same scenes that you just did. Like for instance, I played a list hidden object scene which are total junkpiles btw. I don't know how anyone could say they aren't. The objects are small, hard to find and I had to squint and I don't even have bad vision not to mention its a junk fest of clutter. I had to find 4 bees in each hidden object scene even the same bee I had found previously. Anyway, played a hidden object scene, then did a task in the same room for dupin and then the sparkles were back over the hidden object scene I had just done~! then I go to the next room and the sparkles are back on another one with the same list scene. I was playing the hardest mode too so why are sparkles even there? And I was almost halfway through on the hard mode! Some ERS games blow my mind like the reality show one. I couldn't believe it was from ERS, I loved it so much, I can't wait for the SE but this is garbage! Its so sad to see what this developer can do and then to see it go backwards constantly. I did have widescreen on my mac but it doesn't make up for the lack of imagination that went into this game. January 10, 2013
Really boring game.... Although during the trial hour it wasn't a great game, the fact that there were no junk HOGs and the graphics were excellent and that I've enjoyed the others in the series persuaded me to buy it. Having purchased it, there was one junk pile HO scene after another after another after another...not even interactive. well, unless you count moving two objects to find another and they were covered in sparkles even in advanced mode! I couldn't take any more after another 30 mins of this, so uninstalled. Has to rank as one of the most boring CEs ever. It felt as though the devs consider us all too stupid to fathom anything out, as the whole game led us by the hand as though we are toddlers. The graphics were excellent, and that's all I can say. About Average I played all the Demo. It is a very easy game to play, puzzles are real easy, graphics very good. I like the voice overs real well. The story line was some what old but interesting. Some parts was slow to almost being boring. I will buy this game but may not buy the CE. Over all not a bad game. This will be one game up to the individual's personal liking. If one wants a real challenging game, then this is not it. For those who just want to relax and enjoy an easy game, then this is for you. January 10, 2013
