REVIEW OF COMPLETED GAME I loved playing this game. The entertainment/fun factor is through the roof right from the start and it stays there all the way through. Dupin the beautiful is back and on top form. The graphics, as always with ERS, are top notch. There are just the right amount of iHOS, some lists, some silhouettes and the latter are highly interactive. Very well done and great fun. Only criticism I have is that a couple of them are repeated, and rather too soon after the first one. But only a couple, so the game loses no points for that, it's minor. The music is the traditional French accordian music. Good to listen to and a nice change from the usual dirges. As always, ERS puzzles are easy peasy, but that did not detract at all, for me. The v/os and cut scenes are excellent - they flow and are clickable. Then there is Arthur, who is great. Arthur is a huge black curly-haired hound lent to Dupin by LeGrand to help him and he travels along throughout the game. When a paw print appears over and inventory item, that item is placed on Arthur and he bounds into the game and uncovers something helpful for Dupin. Clever and endearing, that's Arthur. There are no spiders, snakes nor supernatural/occult themes in this. Again, a really nice change. In one scene I clicked on something hanging from the roof and Dupin himself stepped into the game and hooked it with his cane. It was startling because I have not seen this done before with people, only animals. I hoped for more of the same, but it was only a one off, unfortunately. Many will not buy this CE because it has no collectibles, achievements, map or wide screen, although you can do away with the black bars by adjusting your screen resolution to the 2nd from the top. What you get for the extra money is a SG and a BC. I cannot disagree with them that these things should be included, but it is ERS we are talking about and they simply just do not give us these things. Personally I could not care less. I only mention them for the newbies and folks who may not be familiar with these devs and are wondering if the game is worth the price. Up to the individual. The main game took me 4 hrs and ended as it should. So the SE will be quite adequate. The BC took 1 hr and I liked it. It took the story in a slightly different direction and kept up the standard of the main game. In the Extras you can replay puzzles and iHOS, there are 4 music tracks, although French music and I have only a passing acquaintance so they all sounded pretty much the same to me. Also, the usual wallpapers, art etc. 5 hrs of my life spent on this great game. Time well spent. An excellent addition to the series. May they never end. Thank you ERS, you just keep getting better. Dark Tales 4! Review of a completed game. I'm a fan of the Dark Tales series, because I like the stories from Edgar Allan Poe! They are great! This game is the fourth and I'm happy, that it's released! The game has great graphics, with some details. I like the artwork! The game is sometimes easy, but sometimes difficould too. Thats a good mix, but for some people the game may could be to easy. For me it's good. The storyline is a great one. I love the way Ers made the story from the gold bug in this game. It has connections to Edgar Allan Poe's story and some different things in it. And I can say again. Thats a good mix. Now to the music and the sounds! I think the devs made a joke. They took music from their Maestro series and sounds from that game for this game. Not all tracks. Another bad point is, that I finished the game within 4 1/2 hours. The bonus game is included in this time. The game could have been longer. That's the point why I rate this game only with four stars, because I think that could be better. But if you want to play a good HOG game, than you should definitly give this game a try! January 10, 2013
What went wrong????? I enjoyed previous Dark Tales editions but this one is BAD. The scenes are beautiful, I'll say that. That handles the positives. Negatives: It's just too simple. It's misnamed: if you like dark, mysterious, scary, this isn't the game for you. There's a peculiar element where you match up something from your inventory with a pet dog who performs a small search for you. (This is not giving anything away. You'll learn of it early on.) The puzzles are so simple as to be insulting. They aren't challenging...and honestly, they're not a bother, either, because it takes 30 seconds or less to solve them. This was just a real disappointment and I'm so sorry I wasted credits for a Collector's edition. There is NOTHING SPECIAL about this. I can't imagine recommending this to anyone as a CE. It's barely recommendable as a SE for an elementary school child. BOO HISS. January 28, 2013
Rather Disappointing Based on Whole Game I have the whole collection and was looking forward to another game and thought this would be as good as The Premature Burial; but unfortunately it was not. I believe the developers were just going through the motions on this one; though the graphics were excellent, but this game lacked the intensity of Burial. Dupin's friend was annoying and you wonder why he was friends with LeGrand. I'm also finding it annoying that you have the find the same things over and over again like a hammer or knife you should just have it available until you no longer need it. Also thought the game was too short! In fact the bonus story added to the main story combined makes the length of a SE. Good things 1--graphics and sound excellent 2--cute dogs in stories (I'm a sucker for dogs) and a Newfie there to help you sniff things out 3--journal 4--hint button finding HO's and giving directions Not so Good 1--too short for a CE 2--having to find the same items over and over again 3--too much going back and forth 4--storyline not that great one character particularly annoying I really don't think it's worth the price of the CE, though I used my 2 credits on it, actually thinking about it now I'm a little bummed about that too! If they make another Dark Tales it had better be a big improvement over this one or I'm not getting it! January 11, 2013
Excellent as a Standard Edition Excellent game but not as a CE. The Bonus game play was only an hour long. And as others have mentioned there were no 'morphing objects, no achievements, nothing to collect', etc., things I have come to expect in a CE. I could kick myself for not waiting. I usually do. But other than that, this game is AWESOME. I totally recommend you buy the SE version. The Hidden object scenes are so fun and so are the puzzles. Great game!!!! January 11, 2013
I gave it a 2.5! I really liked the first 3 games in this series, but not too sure about this one. Very disappointed in the graphics...fuzzy. Game play was nice. HOGs are cluttered and some items extremely small and difficult to see. Games are very simple. Nice SG (although the print is sometimes hard to read), nice voice overs, music okay. The "bad guy" in the mask did not scare me at all. His voice was whimpy. So what are you afraid of? I am a huge fan of EAP and this story just doesn't have the umph that it should. This game was not challenging to me and did not keep my interest, nor make me want to continue to see what happens. This would be a nice game for a beginner, or someone who just wants to skate by in a game. I don't see that it is CE worthy, especially since it only shows 2 chapters. Not up to ERS standards by any means. I guess, when you are at the top, you can let things slide, but it doesn't take long to slide to the bottom. Come on guys, lets get back to those great games you were putting out. There aren't many games I just plain don't care for, but the only way I would buy this one is if there was a really hot special going on, but even then I would have to think twice about it. As always, try it for yourself and see what you think. We all have different tastes in games and you may find it quite enjoyable. Thanks for the reviews. January 10, 2013
Watered Down Poe Game--Still Love Ya, ERS Devs! Based on demo only and may purchase CE during one of BFG's awesome sales. CE has lots of bonus content, however, this newest ERS game demo appears rather mediocre in comparison to their many success story games i.e. "Grim Facade, Haunted Legends, Puppett Show, Redemption Cemetery, Shadow Wolf Mysteries". One opening cut scene, the "villain" attempts to throw a "sack" into the ocean, but it lands in a boat. Okay, so now I don't feel like chasing this guy all through the game and just want to pounce on him and throttle him when I see what is inside the sack. Everything about this game seems watered down with nothing notable to hold my interest. Maybe it's me and I am simply accustomed to ERS greatness. Recommend to wait on standard version game for beginners or, like me, to add to your ERS Collection. Enjoy! -Mama Mia- January 10, 2013
not great but good This is pretty much like the other Dark tales. Great graphics and has voice over. Music is not bad. It is pretty much straight forward and not going all over the place to find items. The HOS are not the normal ones. You have to find items to solve the HOS. Not hard at all. The puzzles are pretty easy also. The hint button works good if you need it. Pretty easy game. You have a dog to help in the game. Not a bad game to play. Pretty straight forward. No special items to find during the game. February 19, 2013
ERS keeps getting better and better! ERS Game Studios just keeps cranking out great hidden object mysteries, and it is amazing to see how far they have come since Azada, which is still a favourite of mine. The animations have gotten smoother over the years, and with the wealth of classic literature to choose from, they will be in business for a long time. This game focuses on one of Edgar Allen Poe's less macabre stories, which is still just as mysterious, and if you like looking for lost relics, then The Gold Bug is just the mystery you enjoy, because this involves the search for Captain Kidd's treasure. We meet up with Detective Daphin, the dapper man with a taste for the unknown and great fashion sense, for the mid-1840s, and he is the one constant in all of these ERS Poe games, and it is a pleasure to be working with him again as a mystery-solving partner. This story takes us out of France and to Sullivan Island, South Carolina where we meet with William LeGrand, a colleague of Daphin's that has discovered two amazing things. A golden beetle with a death's head markings on its wings, somewhat like the Death's Head moths from The Silence of the Lambs, has lead him to another even more startling discovery. A a very old parchment that seems to be blank until our characters accidentally get it to close to the fire, and this reveals a mishmash of dingbat characters. This is written in invisible ink, and the dingbats are a code which gives a clue to the location of the pirate treasure. I was a bit disappointed that some of the elements of the story were left out, like Legrand's African manservant, Jupiter, and the fact that we broke the code in this game by playing a mah jongg game. When I read the story as a kid, I broke the code using the clues in the story before I bother to flip a couple of pages further along to see what it was. This should have been added to the game. Even though some of the base elements from the story were left out, it did move the game along. It also leaves out the fact that LeGrand has gone insane after losing his fortune. No wonder he is desperate for treasure. There is also a mysterious figure that is attempting to thwart our efforts. The game uses the basic HOM formulae, find this thing, hope it works in that thing, and hope it works in this lock, and so on. Ive really gotten to liking the Poe games, and with ERS Game developers improving the quality with each one, I look forward to more, so long as it stays away from The Tell-Tale Heart and The Cask of Amontillado. Another Hit in the Series!! Just loved it!! Was so excited to see another Edgar Allan Poe game. I have never been disappointed in any of the games. I loved the addition of Arthur to help me through the adventure! As usual the graphics were great and the quality of the story very intriguing . Keep them coming please!! January 10, 2013
