Another good ERS game but not a good CE game As others have said this is a nice game though not worth the CE tag/price. There are no collectibles, morphing objects, etc. No map. And to be honest, this was a short game, I finished on middle difficulty in about 4 hours including the bonus. Storyline is nice, I like the 'cut scenes' don't drag out and you can click thru dialogue#s# if you're a fast reader like I am. Graphics are good although a couple of the HO items were a bit difficult to distinguish. I really enjoy the games where you have to find objects and then use them. I would buy this game but I think you'd get a better value for your money by waiting for the standard version, especially if you don't care about wallpapers, etc. January 10, 2013
Good game, but there's room for improvement!!! I liked the game and the idea of a treasure hunt. But the locations and the graphics kind of sucked all of the life out of the concept. Unfortunately, I played ?The Gold Bug? after having played other ERS games like ?Spirits of Mystery: The Dark Minotaur,? ?Reality Show: Fatal Shot,? and ?Phantasmat: Crucible Peak.? And honestly, it just seems like ERS got tired when it came to ?The Gold Bug? and wanted to work on their other games. I?m not sure where this game was in their overall development process, but it definitely didn?t get the star treatment that the others did. It just seems like they were more excited and into the other games that I played prior to this one. I liked the character LeGrand, he was comical. And Dupin was great, but I actually think he needs his own game. I like the idea of him as a detective and I think he would flourish if ERS took the character and did an original mystery or detective story with him. I think it?s difficult when you?re adapting a literary work because the characters are somewhat limited by the original text. And I loved the dog Arthur and how he would bark and sniff out objects that you gave to him. However, I sense there is more potential. It would be nice to take Dupin and make LeGrand his partner and keep Arthur as their assistant and just give them their own unique landscape and game to explore. Dupin is just so dazzling and distinguished. I could see Dupin and LeGrand paired in sort of a Sherlock Holmes and Watson kind of way plus the dog. I?m not sure if this concept is in any of Poe?s writings. If not, it would be at least worth tossing the idea around. The hidden objects scenes were good and clear. And there were a few of ERS?s newer kind included. But it just didn?t quite feel like a treasure hunt. It kind of lacked that real diehard adventure that people kind of associate with the concept. The idea of finding a pirate treasure is always interesting, but the premise was kind of trapped in a typical ?Dark Tales? fashion. The game just lacked the ?Wow!? that some of their others had. But it was good for what it was. Overall, I liked it and it was worth playing. But it didn?t have the urgency or immediacy that the other games that I mentioned did. But if you?ve played the other ?Dark Tales? games, then it?s at least worth solving one more mystery with Dupin. January 16, 2013
Best of the Dark Tales I really think this is the best of the Dark Tales games to date. This developer does an awesome job with entertaining us and providing us with some of the best games available. IMHO, no other developer does animals quite as well and the wonderful "Newfie" won my heart very early on. In this game we have many IHO (interactive hidden object) scenes, some are the standard look for objects but many are the silhouette type. We have been given some great puzzles as well. I really like that some mahjong and matching type puzzles have been included in the mix. Some of the puzzles are not as easy as they look. I like that even a few of the IHOS have mini puzzles included that must be solved before moving on. All in all, we have been given a very entertaining game with very nice graphics and excellent voice-overs. IMHO this developer designs very realistic characters who move well and don't seem choppy, which IMHO add to the quality of the game. Thanks ERS and BFG for a very nice game that I highly recommend. Not CE Quality I felt the game was not CE quality. It didn't have any real mysterious feeling to it which you would expect from a Poe story. The music and graphics were very acceptable and the voice-overs are getting better. With computer generated graphics being what they are today, I don't understand why they can't get the lips to move with the way the words are spoken. If you noticed carefully, Dupin's facial expressions were were quite subtle but they were appropriate and added feeling. So often, what is lacking (and there is no way around it because it's animation) is body language. So for having a quick lift of the eyebrow to show skepticism or surprise, I applaud the devs for that. The HOS and mini games were by far too easy but may be just right for some players. I feel I want a challenge, not just something to pass the time. And could someone explain why some of the characters who don't even know Dupin keep giving him keys or puzzle pieces or whatever? Would you give a key to an employee and say "Here, give this to a stranger because it may help them."? A bit too convenient. What happened to searching for these items? I won't say I don't recommend this game because it is nicely done, but you don't have to be a brainiac to play it. Be sure to demo, that always helps me make up my mind. January 11, 2013
A good game for beginners Definitely not as challenging nor as enjoyable as the first few of this series. Find a locked chest, find the key under the rug in the same room type of thing. Seldom back track so don't need a map and sure don't need the strategy guide. Wish I'd waited for the SE or even better a DD or coupon buy. It's not a bad game but I can't get very excited about a game I just want to finish so I can replay something else I liked better. Try it but don't just play 15 minutes and buy. Use all the trial before you decide. February 3, 2013
Dark Tales Disappointment I have bought and played all the previous Dark Tales games featuring Edgar Allan Poe's detective Dupin and loved everyone of them. Until this one that is. The graphics were great, the voiceovers were great, but the story fell flat for me. I found it dull and uninteresting for the most part. Everything was a little too easy to figure out. It isn't hard to figure out who the culprit is; I expected a few more red herrings and twists in the plot to throw you off the trail of the real criminal. But this game had no fire to it. Dull, dull, dull. In order for me to love a game, it has to have super graphics and an intriguing storyline. This game had great graphics but nothing else. And it really didn't have anything to make it worthy of being a CE. The extra play was like an after thought, just extra padding really. If you really want to buy it wait for the SE. February 2, 2013
Started well, but soon got bored I don't normally buy collectors edition, but loved the game demo that i decided to buy, to me it felt as though all the good stuff was at the begining with not to many HO's, after it downloaded the rest the game it became more and more HO's very disappointed. Fun HO game This game from the ERS stable provided me with several hours of entertainment.I played in casual mode. There are two types of HO scenes, traditional list and outline-logic. Mini games aren't too difficult and can be skipped if the brain is on strike. Music not intrusive and voiceovers and cutscenes worth a look. January 15, 2013
Fun Adventure/HO Game with Hot Side Kick! I don't usually care for HO games, but I really enjoyed this one. This game is typical in that there are puzzles and mini games to solve that allow the clues which move you forward. These were fun, but not too challenging, and I was a little disappointed in that. I was intrigued by the story line, and was actually disappointed when I ran out of time on the 1 hour demo! Voice overs helped move the story along, but were slightly cheesy (but honestly, how can they not be!). Other than the very slight criticisms, I really liked this game. And regarding the "hot side kick" comment - Dupin reminded me of a co-worker for whom I had a huge crush many years ago. Mutual feelings didn't help the situation as we were both married. However, morality reigned, and there really isn't more to the story than this. But looking at Dupin sent me straight down memory lane, and it was a nice trip. January 16, 2013
Fun Hidden Object Game I really enjoyed this game. The right amount of hidden objent and puzzle's. Story line kept me interested. I have gotten so tired of demon based games will not by any more. found this just right. please more of these. February 6, 2013
