Could have been better This could've been a good game - the storyline was good, but I found the HOS to be a bit too difficult, and I was playing on casual, and have been playing HOGs for a long time. I found that the difficulty of the HOS took away from the enjoyment of the game, and I was dreading finding a HOS. The puzzles on the other hand were quite simple - which made for a bit of inconsistent gameplay. The story was interesting, and grabbed my attention, so I MAY buy this game as a Standard Edition, I'm not sure. On the plus side the hint button recharged quickly. Another thing that annoyed me, and this is just a pet peeve of mine, but some of the objects in the HOS were not in keeping with the time period of the game. It kind of annoys me when you are playing a game that is set in a historical time period, but you find modern, or semi-modern items in the HOS. This is one that you should definitely play the trial of before buying, because you may find yourself disappointed. Definitely not worth purchasing as a CE. December 2, 2012
IMPRESSION OF DEMO As a CE addict who has bought every CE BF has put out there, I am for the first time ever, not buying this. It is the 2nd one from these devs in as many weeks and is not nearly as good as the previous one, which left a lot to be desired anyway. There is no wide screen, no achievements, no collectibles and no map at all. The clues in the journal are fuzzy. It is packed to overflowing with HOS which are not interactive. The graphics are poor - very, very dark and uninteresting. The music is lamentable. The story is very disturbing, involving cruelty to children and the puzzles are poor. I would be in 2 minds about buying it if it were a SE, but very well might. But to pay double the price for one extra hours play for a game of such poor quality is not going to happen. Devs, you need to buck your ideas up. This is atrocious. December 2, 2012
Again With The Puppets! Once again we have a town with children being abducted by a Puppeteer and it is up to us to save the day. Hmmmm, have we not done this before, infact several times?. This time we are a detective who is working for the Grimm Brothers Examiners and our first mission is to save the CHildren. Our lates victim is the daughter of the Silver Magician who we meet up with first. This game is your basic HOPA gameplay that pales in comparison to other of the Puppet storylines we have seen. Is it CE worthy? In my opinion, definetly not. FOr one thing, the graphics are dark and cut scenes are blurry. The music and voice-overs are good enough but there are no ambient sounds or effect. There are two modes of play and game features include a notebook and a hint that merely tells you where to go. There is no map and I soon found the backtracking annoying. Some may argue that having no map makes gameplay more challenging, I just think it is a way to prolong the game whatwith all that going back and forth. The HO scenes are not interactive which I found to be lazy. The items are small and in some cases, hard to detect. This also is a type of manipulative way to make them challenging, Again with the laziness. Puzzles are basic and we have seen them over time and time again. WHat really annoyed me were the HO scenes; Folks we are in the 1800s and what is a telephone doing amongst the list of items to find? Again, laziness! The is the odd page of MAgigrams that you needto locate and if you are playing casual, you cant miss them, they sparkel. The adventure gameplay is also very limited; for examply, you need to use the forge to unbend a doorhandle. You place it on the fire and remove it using your hand. You would think that the developers would have at least offered you some sort of tool for removal. Once again, laziness. Had this been a Standard Edition Game, I would have used a credit on it, but as a CE? My honest recommendation is to wait and save your pennies. My advice to the developers, you need to check out some of the other CE games that deal with Puppets and go back to the drawing board. December 2, 2012
Worth the CE price? (Based on Demo) I enjoyed the demo. But I'm wondering if the game is worth the CE price. I'd say **only** if the game lasts longer than most. Because... No map. No achievements. No hidden extras to find while navigating through the game. No extra anything except SG and Bonus Chapter. That being said, if I don't buy the CE I will get the SE because this is a well done game. The story line is presented in a way that keeps you interested. The HOS are not cluttered. No click penalty. Many objects are hidden in plain sight. You'll spend a few minutes looking for something only to find it right in front of your eyes. I really, really like the graphics. I found myself 'mousing' all over the screen just because the scene was that intriguing. I wanted to see if something was hidden in every corner. By the way, you should mouse all over the screen, because you might miss something. ;) I also like the voice-overs. They are believable. And I enjoyed the environment sounds. Custom difficulty menu!!!! Choice of Short - Medium - Off for Hint/Skip. Tutorial on/off. Visuals on/off - I assume that means sparkles. Speaking of sparkles: HOS are indicated with sparkles, but nothing else. (I left the Visuals off.) OK, back to the length: The SG shows 4 chapters + Bonus. It follows you as you play, but I wasn't able to scroll beyond my point in the game. I was trying to see how many pages were in the guide to give me an idea of length. Because I really really like this game. I just don't want to plunk down CE price for the usual 3 or 4 hours of play. I could care less about wallpapers, screen savers and concept art. I will be checking back to look for reviews from players who have bought and completed the game. Because if I find out the game has good length I probably will get the CE. December 2, 2012
A Really Poor Example of an HOG This game was probably the poorest example of a hidden object game I've played in a while. It was even worse than a seek and find game where that is all you do. In the first few cut scenes we find a man who seems to be speaking for the crowd. His actual voice was okay, but there was no expression on his face, just his lips moving. The music was dreary (if you want to call it music) and didn't change throughout the demo, at least not that I noticed. Some reviewers have said there was no color and mostly I have to agree. Even the scenes with color were bland. The puzzles were first-grade simple and finding a key to open a lock was made so easy by attaching a key chain with the symbol of the lock on it... well, why have us hunt for the key then? The HOS were a bit of a challenge but only because the objects were small sometimes or blended into another object so subtly you didn't spot it. I also agree with other reviewers that once a scene is used, create a new one for the next HOS. Reduce, reuse, recycle just doesn't work here! And while I'm on the subject, the objects to be found should be kept in the period of the story. The only time an exception should be made is in the case of a time-travel game. I did not like all the back and forth of the game. Waste of time. Why have me find objects all over the place only to send me back to the start to make it usable in another scene farther down the road? It could have been made usable right next to where I had to use it. I can't comment on the strategy guide since I didn't use it. I usually find them to be little more than a walk-through. I have played games by this developer before and they were usually very good. Makes it seem like they found this one in someone's desk drawer and said, "Oh, we forgot to use this 3 years ago!" Would love to see fresh story lines, more modern settings, and less gloomy been there, done that, bought the t-shirt games. Definitely not a game for me. December 2, 2012
Once Upon A Time Bad kids (who sneak out at night) end up missing. Old tale, but, with a twisted twist. I bought it after 45 minutes of Demo. The hints are good & recharge fairly fast. The HOS take some work, but, isn't that the point of an HOS game? The story keeps me wanting to go further, not stop, find the next fact. The stragegy guide only has one small problem. It's very clear, but, clicking on the pictures doesn't enlarge them. So if you need to see small things in those pictures keep a magnefing glass handy. December 2, 2012
Puppet master stealing children' souls........... Played 30 minutes, Casual - 2 modes, casual, advanced - Integrated SG which shows 4 chapter + bonus play - You can only access the extras after completing the game - Notebook, you collect pages with information throughout the game, they go straight into your notebook. - No map - Voice overs - Hint refill in 12 seconds, casual and is useful outside H0 - Skip button - H0, you don't interact, clear but items are sometimes really small and not too easy to find - Usual mini games, nothing very new - Good graphics A puppet master is stealing the souls of your children. Will you be able to solve the case ? Shame this game appears after Nutcracker, it looks like a good game and I've liked it enough to buy. December 2, 2012
Very average game - not CE callibre I'm only half way through the game but really cant be bothered playing the rest. Whilst the graphics, cut-scenes, and voice-overs are well done, and caters for wide-screen, there isnt much more I can say for the game. The puzzles and hidden object are rediculously easy - and are also 'sparkled' even on the hard mode. There are no bonus objects to find, and no achievements to earn. There is no map - not that i needed one, but still is handy to have. The storyline itself was okay, but not captivating. I have no desire to play the game to see if good triumphs over evil at all. This game would probably be okay in a SE version, but as a CE - definitely not. Except for the graphics nothing in this game is CE callibre. December 3, 2012
Dreary game. Puppets again...really? Nothing original in this game. Graphics weren't bad, but the color, or lack thereof, was depressing. This is winter, it's already dark and ugly. I do not care for the monochrome "color" of this game at all. This made the already very small items even harder to find in the HOGs. There is no jump map (always a plus for me), so unless you are quite awake and have a pretty good memory, you will have to run all over the place to fine out where a location was 3-4 moves ago. It at least needs a cursor that tells you what is in a general location when you point at it. The SG is okay, but again, no direction of a location, e.g. back 2, left, etc. This game needs that. Hint system good, music okay. Game play was good. This game did not draw me in at all. it could easily have been a very nice game, but dialogue is sparse and the music get boring. I may purchase this one just to complete my points for a free game, but otherwise, this one is going in the puddle for a "maybe some day" purchase. This would be an okay game for someone who justs wants to play and do nothing else but run around and that is the only reason I am recommending it. As always, try it for yourself. We all have different tastes in games and you may find this one quite enjoyable. Thanks for the reviews. December 2, 2012
FIRST RATE STORYLINE: Play a Brothers Grimm detective and find out why children are disappearing while the puppetshow is in town. Classic Grimm tale where someone is in danger. Remember that the world we think we live in and the world as it actually exists are different places. BASICS: Casual and advanced modes of play. Journal. No map. Can mute dialogue if you prefer to read it. GAMEPLAY: Lots to do and places to see. The HOS are beautifully defined, not too crowded, and objects are nicely sized. Nice variety of puzzles and mini-games with varying degrees of difficulty. Adventure outweighs the HOS and puzzles; proportion of HOS to puzzles is right. Memorable characters. Some sudden surprises in gameplay. OTHER STUFF: Music is unobtrusive, yet sets the mood for a mystery. The locations are beautifully designed and detailed. A lot of thought went into developing this gorgeous game into a very polished game with smooth and fluid gameplay. First rate by all standards. December 2, 2012
