The Lake House: Children of Silence Collector's Edition 4.6 5 98 98
Excellent HOG For those who are disappointed with Mystery Case Files recent release Shadow Lake,or if you are fed up with cheesy stories and childish fairy tale themes which seems to dominate lots of HOG in Big Fish lately,I strongly suggest this The Lake House: Children of Silence. And hopefully overrated developers like Elephant,ERS and Blue Tea Games could learn something from Team A. Great HOG is not all about high production game with fancy colourful drawing to go with ridiculous stories which often targeted to younger audience, plus tons of useless extra contents and certainly not taking 1GB of players hard drive space. My rate for The Lake House is actually 4.5 but lets start with what I dislike about it first. Storyline- When it comes to any kind of game I'm very fussy with storyline, because only a good story can keep me going and engaged throughout the whole game. The main character's brother in this game,Tommy kinds of remind me of my own younger brother. I don't have sister so we're very close with each other but sometimes he was quite clingy and when I started dating at the age of 18 he did show his disappointment towards me for not being able to accompany him anymore. Yes I think I have personal connection with the story in this game. :) However, after I finished with Bonus Content and unlocked the trivia, after reading it I must say I was upset seeing the original story planned for The Lake House, which was far more superior in my opinion than the official version. Why the developer have to change it? It would make more sense if they stick with the original story without adding new character. Overall it's not total disaster, just minor stuff but that's explained my 3 stars for storyline. As for the rest, all I can say is excellent job Team A. Here's my reasons of why The Lake House is next best after MCF Dire Grove. 1.Graphics and artwork-Very lovely, detailed and there's nothing not to like with what they did to every scenes, characters and HOS. 2.Music-Oh Lord,I would give 10 stars for this if I could! The excellent music was one the best I ever heard from all kind of video games I ever played. Soothing, romantic yet beautifully haunting. I'm little bit disappointed because Team A didn't include the soundtracks as Bonus Content, they should! 3.Voice acting-Excellent job again to all who did the voice overs. There's no in-game life actors, which I'm really grateful saves my eyes from seeing awful acts get pasted in ugly background like I saw a lot on other HOG. The voice acting for main character Ann was realistic and believable, not whiny or annoying with over dramatic tones like I always heard from female characters in HOG. 4.Easy gameplay-There's no frustration from back tracking in this game, every puzzles are very easy to follow. They provided map but no option to jump from one location to another, well there's no need to because the area to explore isn't that big and difficult enough to make you lost. Come on we are too spoiled if we keep asking the jump option. :) 5.Strategy Guide-No written guide but they use graphics instructions to show you what to do next.I saw this method first been used in MCF Escape from Ravenhurst (not sure about other games) but I found it very convenient. When playing the game you'll encounter posters from 2 other HOG by the same developer,I have played one of them which was a very well made HOG too in my opinion. So yes,Team A did excellent job with this one.Maybe a sequel for next release? I highly recommend The Lake House to all HOG fans out there. You'll definitely going to enjoy it. January 9, 2013
Many reasons to buy this game. I truly enjoyed this game. Although it did not have achievements or morphing objects, I found myself drawn to the pleasure of being immersed in this game. Storyline was reasonable. Music was fabulous. HOGs were fun in that there was usually at least one object hidden away. The artwork was enjoyable. This is a game that if one has some experience you can play as an SE. Even though I bought the CE, I never needed to consult the SG at all. The map is VERY helpful although it's not a jump map. I tended to overthink this game, so if you have alot of experience, back off and you will find what you need. Great flow and again, really enjoyed the characters, the music and the overall game play. A nice escape. The bonus chapter is nice but not necessary for a great game experience. January 1, 2013
Psychological Thriller Wow I must say to this one!!! I got pulled into the game very early on and could not bring myself to quit until 430am yesterday. Just finished the rest of the game and I am one happy camper that I purchased this one. Especially since I did it during the bogo sale!! Everything about this game I liked. Not an over abundance of hos, or mini games that make me want to rip my hair out, not overly easy but fun. The characters are very well done and the story progresses very naturally and makes sense. I was really feeling for the characters. I also felt an urgency at the end (wont say too much) to get what I needed to make the rescue. Love this developer, I have several games by them and I love them all. December 24, 2012
Excellent creepy game !! I played the demo & when it finished I wanted to play more! I liked the storyline very much & I am curious to see what is next to happen. Hogs are interactive, very good graphics. In short, it is a very good game to spend your evening feeling the chill of a thriller movie! December 23, 2012
A Lot of Fun! This game was a good length, had easy to average HOS, easy to difficult puzzles and was a joy to play. This would appeal to young teens to adults. It kept my attention the entire time. I was glad that I bought the CE because the bonus chapter was worth it. Without the bonus play you would be looking for the next game to finish this story line.. CE answers the questions and wraps things up nicely. December 26, 2012
Highly Recommend This Game! For many months I've read reviews with the same comment; games seem to be missing-the-mark lately. That is why I was thrilled to have found this game! HOS have a different twist to them and challenging! Mystery storyline is extremely good. The graphics and animation are over-the-top in this game and I would have played it through just to enjoy them. All around, I highly recommend this game. If you were, like me, getting tired of HOS games because the unique factor wasn't there anymore, this is one that will renew your faith in them. December 27, 2012
Intriguing Story with Great Atmosphere ALWR, should be proud of themselves once again for being able to communicate both an inspired and dramatic story with such extraordinary skill. This game was done by ALWR?s team that did ?Dark Strokes: Sins of the Father.? And it?s painfully obviously that they have a high aptitude for excellence. The atmosphere was somber and murky, but they were able to make it colorful without damaging the tone of the game. I wish more developers realized that you can to sad and eerie without overblown darkness. The colors and tones were more subtle and washed out, but it made for a landscape that was very compelling and striking. And when you add in the music that was very moving and emotional along with elements like the rain, it just all worked the way it should. Thankfully, the game just wasn?t a treasure hunt for collectables and trophies. I like that stuff, too. But I would hate to think that the title of Collector?s Edition would only be bestowed upon games that rely heavily on side gimmicks because they can?t illustrate a thought or tell a real story. At times it felt like you were traveling through a very good illustrated book, and on other occasions you could sense the ?Friday the 13th? Camp Crystal Lake/Jason Voorhees undertones. Their games always force you to be attentive. You can never sleep on them or you?ll miss something important. It?s a long and rigorous exercise. This is the type of game that?s easy to overlook or dismiss because it?s not like, ?Wow! Look at me! I?m jumping through fire!!!? But it?s a journey worth taking. The strategy guide is 353 pages long with the first 1-258 pages, 14 chapters, being the main game. And pages 259-353 are dedicated to the 4 bonus chapters. Now the strategy guide was somewhat controversial for me because it was done like a photo album. It was a pure visual walkthrough without any text. It fit in with the theme of the game, but it was odd. It worked. But a bit of a risk. If you haven?t played ?Lake House: The Children of Silence? or ALWR?S other game ?Eternal Journey: New Atlantis,? then I think you?re missing out. The craftsmanship is just so artful and intelligent that I would recommend both of them. Overall, if I could describe ALWR in a few words: thorough, thoughtful, complete, exhaustive, and deliberate. All compliments. But as another reviewer said, an ?A for ?The A-Team.?? January 11, 2013
Review of completed game + bonus chapter I've never posted a game review before, but this game just blew me away. Everything -- story line, graphics, voice-overs, music tracks -- comes together to form a seamless whole that I literally could not stop playing until I'd finished the main game. The story line is melancholy but not depressing. I started out playing the demo because frankly I'm not all that enthralled by the gloomy supernatural games that seem to be so popular. This became a must-have for me within the first 20 minutes. I normally buy CEs for the extra game play, without paying a lot of attention to the wallpapers, concept art, and soundtracks. This is the first game in which I went through *all* of the bonus content. The music is particularly lovely, and fits the game perfectly. Playing in casual mode, I took a leisurely six hours to play the main game; the bonus chapter added another 1.5 hours. Definitely worth the money for the CE, and I'll be actively searching for more games from this developer. January 1, 2013
Really a fun game! I have a very high standard on HO games and believe me you'll enjoy this game. I don't have any complaints either because this game was well done, I even read through the "trivia" in the bonus content which I found interesting. You won't regret adding this game to your inventory, well worth the money. December 31, 2012
Fully engrossing Based on demo: Well done in every way; unique and the storyline draws you in right from the beginning. The scenes are creative and detailed... Thumbs up to BFG and devs to a great total package game... it has everything so far that one could ask for in a spookier-themed game. December 23, 2012
