Elephant games doesnt make the mark I have played other Grimm Tales and I like some but overall there are some things I feel uncomfortable with: The picture quality is clear but sometimes very small and the music does not always follow the storyline. The cutscenes are good and I wish that quality would follow to the game proper. I just feel that I have to make an extra effort to play the game and move it forward. If youhave time and patient - you will enjoy this game. January 3, 2013
Not Impressed Enough Looks like I'm pretty much in the minority here. I wasn't very impressed with the game. Graphics were fine, HOS items not too difficult to find, but there was a lack of urgency. If the daughter is so ill, get a move on! I also found it rather odd that after the Stone Queen turned people to stone, which is pretty mean-spirited, you could revive them with a... flower?? Well, at least that's original. Not enough zip to this one, definitely not a CE purchase for me. January 3, 2013
Just not as good as it should be. The Grim Tales games seem to be slowly going downhill. I definitely enjoyed the first two, the third one a bit less, and this one even less than the third one. It's partially because the quality has slipped a bit, and partially because they seem to make a bit less sense over time. Honestly, they just could have done a lot better with this game than they did, especially given that it's a CE. The graphics are relatively good, the sound is okay (though the music just sometimes appears to be missing), but overall it's not excellent. The story is a bit wonky, in that it doesn't always flow well. You get the impression that whomever wrote it got started one way, and then changed as time went along but forgot to fix the early parts. For instance, supposedly the boy who you're trying to heal is your nephew from the previous games at the beginning. There's an early part that calls him your nephew, Brandon. And while later on he's still definitely the Brandon from the previous games, he's ceased to be *your* nephew and is now the nephew of the previous mayor. It tends to continue to flow in a somewhat choppy fashion like that throughout the game. And, it ends really abruptly, both in the main story and the bonus gameplay story. It was a story that had the potential to be really good, but just felt poorly written and executed. The level of challenge is a bit lacking, and the main challenge comes from trying to remember what you were working on if you leave the game and come back. Because there's no journal keeping track of either the story or what you've done in this game. There is an interactive map, and beyond letting you travel more quickly, it does sort of keep track of what you still need to do, but it doesn't always accurately do so. There were times where I completed the task in a location, but it was still telling me I needed to go there and do it. It doesn't affect the actual gameplay, as the game isn't requiring you to do it again, but it is a bit odd to see the map trying to tell you to do the same thing again. (And may make it hard for those who aren't playing in one big marathon session.) The mini-games/puzzles are for the most part relatively interesting, but there's a few oddities here and there. In that they had no real challenge at all to them, and seemed sort of like busy work. And I had trouble getting one to function properly at all - the door to the gnome's home puzzle I finally gave up on and skipped not because it was something I couldn't have completed, but because the sliders kept snapping back into a previously held position when I'd try and move them again, and I got tired of fighting with them. That, the tasks glitch on the map, and a few other things here and there just make the game seem more glitchy than it should. For a CE, it really doesn't have much. Sure, it has the bonus gameplay (which is even more glitchy than the main gameplay), the wallpapers, the concept art, and the music, but that's it. And frankly, I don't buy CEs for wallpapers or music, generally. I will say that the bonus gameplay at least isn't a must have continuation of the story - I hate it when the story makes no sense without the bonus gameplay, and this really is a bonus and not the rest of the story. Ultimately, this game isn't worth it as a CE and definitely could have been done much better. If it hadn't been for the previous games, I don't think I'd be as disappointed as I am. I definitely wouldn't recommend buying this as a CE. It's just not worth it at the CE price. The previous Grim Tales games were a much better example of what this game developer is capable of - this one just makes them look kind of bad. January 8, 2013
excccccellent hidden object game if you liked the other grim Tales you will love this one i played for about 20 minutes and then bought the game every thing about the game is good cant wait to play some more i just stopped to write this review i hope you all enjoy this game January 3, 2013
Nicely drawn but uneven game play I have the other Grim Tales games and found them really enjoyable but this one felt different and was disappointing. I should have left it at the end of the trial. The music and artwork were nice, and the story was reasonable. The HO scenes are not particularly difficult or junk-piley. There are no trophies, awards or easter eggs. The issues I had were: *In many cases, next step was unclear; HINT button used often (which I really dislike but resorted to after traipsing around to different locations without success) *Many items carried in inventory for a LONG time without application; others used almost immediately (this varied throughout game play) *Maybe I'm not the brightest bulb but I had real difficulty with some of the mini games. I ended up having to skip several out of frustration because I couldn't understand what needed to be done or how to do it There were also a few technical issues: *The map showed the same info for two different locations *Some of the interactive items in HOS scenes didn't work the first (or second) time attempted. Not this dev's best effort. January 10, 2013
Grim Tales! Another great game from Elephant! Review of a completed game. The Grim Tales series is one of my favourite series. So I've been waiting for the next installment, but it was not long. The devs are very fast, they need only 6 months for a Grim Tales. And in this time they made a game, thats greater than many others. The Storyline is great. It is more different from the other games in the series. It is not so much about the family and more about the stone queen. Thats different and a nice mix. The sounds are great and the music fits into the game, like in every Elephant game. That is great! The game is very difficould. I'm glad there was a strategy guide in it, because I used it some times. The puzzles are not solveless and not to easy! The Hidden object scenes are ok. The graphics are great. They are very clear and look sometimes like photographs. I love them. The game took me 6 hours to finish. I've not completed the bonus game, but I think it is long too, because I counted the pages in the strategy guide. So this game is worth the money! A five star game. January 3, 2013
Not The Best From Elephant, But Still An Alright Game As the title says, this wasn't the best game ever, but I did enjoy it all the same. Good Parts: Storyline is good. The Stone Queen has turned evil for some reason and has turned everyone to statues. It was your average storyline, with a few twists, but wasn't the thriller that I was used to. Great graphics, scenes looked very realistic. Animations are done well. I liked the HOS, which included "extra step" objects. They weren't too hard, but were a good challenge for those of us who dislike easy games. Hint and skip rechage fast. You can free the statues by placing flowers or something simillar on their backs. This was an extra thing we had to do and I really enjoyed it. The map is very useful and you can jump from location to location. There is a goblin that you aquire. This goblin is really useful to you in the game, kind of like the dog in The Four Aces. OK Parts: I didn't like most of the puzzles, but there were one or two that I liked. Most of the puzzles were too complex, or I didn't understand what was meant by the instructions. There was a bit of going back and forth Bad Parts: Minimal voice-overs compared to most ganes by this developer. There were a couple of annoying sounds in the game No achievements or collectables. These usually feature in Elephant's games, but sadly there were none here. Some things in the game were overly-complex, for example starting the jackhammer, which required the player having to find 2 items to place in some holes, then completing a puzzle to start the hammer. As well as that, you had to replace the drill bit. I found this part of the game to be very time consuming. While I did enjoy The Snow Queen, there's nothing in the demo that stood out enough for me to purchase the game. To those wondering, I would say wait for the Standard Edition unless you want to play a bonus chapter. Pretty much all that comes with the CE is a strategy guide, screensavers and the bonus chapter. The weakest Grim Tales yet I expected more out of this game for some reason. It has an average number of HOS and less minigames. There are many opportunties for minigames that are missed. There is a map to jump around. The Strategy guide doesn't tell you how to solve minigames, otherwise it's okay. The plot is interesting but poorly developed. I don't think this game is as good as it's predecessors, it weakly ties in to the Grim Tales story. I'm not sorry I bought it, but not wowed. At least it's a decent length. Buy it on sale. Good game but not Great I've completed the game and am glad I waited to write my review. Initially I'd have raved a little more but I found a few frustrating things. First off though, it was a decent game (3.5 stars) In addition to lacking some of the extras I want in a five star CE such as achievements, morphing or collectible objects and a decent diary, it also lacked clarity of purpose. Example: something isn't working and you need to fix it. But since I am neither a mechanic or a electrician, I didn't know I could use a piston to unclinch a stuck stone hand. I don't want a lot of coaching, but to just tell me it's broken when I don't know the problem becomes frustrating because it happened about 20 times. Interactive map very very helpful; hint system very useful, (And I'm beginning to get very frustrated with the number of missing zipper pulls in games lately!) The bonus game adds an additional problem to the happy ending that you need to fix and make happy again. (This family is truly jinxed.) The game play is length (hour plus) and involves same areas with a few new ones thrown in. Not a lot of hidden object piles; not a lot of mini games --and these were not that difficult, though sometimes tedious). Could easily be enjoyed without bonus chapter. Strategy guide useful but hint system in regular mode quite adequate and quickly refilled. (Actually told you where to use an item you had or where to pick up an item you needed). I will play again in the future (a must for a CE is replayability) and will probably like it better because now I know what to do with pistons! January 5, 2013
Not up to par I'm a huge fan of this developer. In fact, I think the only games I've replayed have come from them. So, like other reviewers, I found this game to be a big letdown. I don't see any reason why this was released as a CE game. What's so special about it? Nothing we haven't seen before. Yes, there's a jump-map, but the dev always provides that (and thank you!) But... no collectibles? Nothing really interesting to do? No wow factor that I can see. There's just no excitement here. Even the graphics seem below the level I've come to expect. Maybe as an SE, this is a buy, but I don't think it comes anywhere near justifying the CE label. With regret and disappointment, I'll pass on this one. January 4, 2013
