Good but Not Great! When I review a game, I generally rate them according to certain criteria that I think a game should meet such as exceptional graphics and sounds, interesting storylines, top notch game features that provide the extra fun factor such as interactive HO scenes, voice-overs, a journal, interactive map and a helpful hint system. Then there are the extras that I believe developers should really make an effort to incorporate into their games such as morphing objects, collectables, achievements and trophies that generally add replay value. There is also the game length to take into consideration which in my humble opinion should exceed at least 5 hours of game play. Finally there is the fun factor or what some call it, the WOW factor which unfortunately is a rarity these days as most games are like carbon copies of each other. Usually I will look for these criteria before deciding to purchase a CE game at full cost or wait until the SE comes out. Although it is rare to come across a game that meets them all, there are few that generally will provide fun and entertainment despite the lack of game features. This is also a method I personally use when rating a and I believe that a game that earns 5 stars should meet more than half of the game features listed above.. Grim Tales: The Stone Queen is the third of the series and in accordance to my own criteria it barely meets half of them therefore does not earn 5 stars from me. The Graphics are great, much improved and I loved the art work. Voice-over is minimal and you come across few characters that talk one or two sentences. The sound effects are very well done but at times there is no music and no sounds, just gaps of silence that made me feel uneasy. The storyline is interesting but somewhat confusing as there is no journal or diary available. You do come across some diary pages but are not able to collect them. Having played the demo, I have learned that we are now in a mining town that once prospered and now is being terrorized by a Stone Queen who is ticked off at someone and is seeking retribution. Your nephew is also a part of this mystery and your mission is to stop the Queen and help reverse the damage she has inflicted on the town's people. Nothing we haven?t done before. Game features include three modes of difficulty, several game options like special effects and environmental sounds that do add to the game. There is a very helpful hint system that will tell you exactly where to go and what to do so you really do not require the SG. There is a interactive map that will allow you to jump and does offer you a task list as well as game progress indicators. Unfortunately, as I have noted, there is no journal or diary which is a let-down. You have a standard HOPA game that plays heavy on adventure with HO scenes that are junk-piled and slightly interactive. There is much to do and a lot of locations to cover, so my advice is to have a pad and pen on hand. There are many mini-games to play and most were interesting. A few that I came across were a bit vague in the instructions and some had enough challenge in them to make them fun. Game Extras include the obligatory screen saver, music and you have the bonus chapter. The SG shows four chapters with only one chapter accessible in the demo plus one extra bonus chapter. I was able to complete the first chapter within the demo time which is an indicator on the length of this game. Although I did enjoy the overall game and it does have its moments, after having played the demo, I felt that the developers have not produced an entirely exceptional game that warrants a five star rating. The storyline is somewhat disconnected and the game lacked the WOW factor. I predict that this is a game that will no doubt appeal to some while others like me will wait for the SE. January 3, 2013
A New Grim Tales The "Stone Queen" is a new Grim Tales that does not seem to be continuation of the previous three games in the series. As is the case with this developer, the graphics are high-quality and the voice overs are excellent. Everything in this games is top-notch. Since I knew this would be a quality game, I purchased it outright without trying the demo and it does not disappoint. The storyline is very interesting and I can't wait to solve the mystery of "the Stone Queen". Although the game doesn't have achievements or morphing objects, the story, graphics, IHOS, mini puzzles, and interactive map make this a game worthy of the CE designation. Thanks to BFG for starting the new year with this high-quality CE. Kudos to the developer who I am sure will provide us with many more excellent games in 2013. January 3, 2013
REVIEW OF COMPLETED GAME Dear old Hefelump. I am so fond of these devs. They are without a doubt one of the few who I considered deliver top of the line games consistently. That is why I was so surprised to find no achievements, no collectibles, a complete absence of music, and graphics of a quality I know they can do much better. It strikes me as very strange and I wonder where they got this game from, as it does not seem like an Elephant game to me. That said, it is still a good game. The graphics are very colourful, on wide screen, they just look a little mundane, at first. Later they take on a sort of jagged look, as though they weren't properly finished off. There is a jump map. The story I think excellent. They are also one of the few devs who seem able to write original scripts. Gents, beware. You are at serious risk of falling in love with the Stone Queen. She made my eyes pop, Jim Carey style, and I'm female. What a knockout. The SG is well laid out but does not keep pace. However, unless you want solutions to puzzles, it is not really necessary as the hint tells you where to go and what to do, and is quck to refill. There are golems and goblins, 1 exotic cat, 1 mole and 1 raven. That is all I can remember but there may be a couple more. No snakes, and spiders only in emblem form to open things. My main beef is the lack of music. That made it s little dull - not much atmosphere. I kept going into the options to see if somehow the volume had diminished, but no, it was where I set it, at the highest level.. But it is good, well made and has enough of a fun factor to have kept me interested enough that I am not at all sorry I bought it. The main game took me 4.5 hrs and ended very well. The BC took me 2 hrs, which is rare. So in this case, where BF says hours of extra bonus play, it is true. In this game, the BC has only 2 new locations, again strange for Elephant Games and a little disappointing. It also did not seem very necessary or relevant to me. So, my opinion is that this is not one of their best efforts, but, if it were their first, and I had nothing to compare it to I would probably be a lot more enthusiastic. It just lacks some of the features that we have come to expect from the Ellie people. January 4, 2013
Very disappointed! Wow, I can't believe this is an Elephant game! I have the other three Grim Tale games and really loved them. In fact, I have a huge number of Elephants games, as they are one of my favorite devs. What happened, did you hire a student new to the game? Anyway, graphics were not up to the their usual excellent specs (very cartoony#, game play was good, music was odd #came in and out and had long periods of complete silence - very boring#. HOGs okay, but a bit cluttered #items not difficult to find). Games very simple. Nothing extra to find or do to keep your interest and make you want to move on to more. Game was not challenging at all and after the first 3 games, very disappointing to say the least. This would be a nice little game for a beginner...someone who has never played any of the other Grim games, or any of the other Elephant games. I will recommend this game only for that reason. Nothing in this game made me want to continue to see what happens. It did have promise with the stone people story, but it just didn't go anywhere...no flow to the game. Sorry, no buy at the CE price and not sure I would buy it at any price. I really wanted to add this to my Grim collection too. As always, try it for yourself and see what you think. We all have different tastes in games and you may really enjoy it. Thanks for the reviews. January 3, 2013
Very Good I like this game. The graphics were great. The characters and interaction with other items during a search in surrounding areas was fun. Love the following eyes. The symbol Monkey is weirding me out, but I love it. The HOs scenes were very well done. I noticed like another here that it does take some thinking on what to do next. Not a boring game, but a little bit of a thinking game. I like it and will be adding this to my list. January 3, 2013
LOVE IT - in keeping with other Grim Tales BASED ON COMPLETED GAME HARD CORE MODE (3rd of 3 modes of difficulty), no hints, no sparkles. This is one beautiful game from start to finish. I have enjoyed all of the GRIM TALES series and this one is no exception. From beginning to end of bonus play it was clever, humorous, with a lot of great scenes to explore, interesting characters, and excellent graphics which makes it well worth the CE price. There are only a handful of iHOS in this game, but they are all extremely well executed and beautiful with no chaotic junk piles. -They were a lot of fun making this a great example of quality over quantity. There were quite a few mini-games that varied in difficulty from easy to light-medium. These also were very well done, beautiful, and just plain fun. Some I'd seen in other games but some were new to me. However all were clever and worth the time to solve. The storyline is a tad formulaic in that you (as the gamer) come to find out what has happened to turn the inhabitants of Stoneville into stone. We learn early on (so this is not a spoiler) that locating the right flower will bring characters back to the land of the living and this is done throughout game play. Game Structure: -As mentioned 3 modes of game play which could be changed at any time during the game. -MAP, YES. It showed active areas, locked areas, tasks, and allowed jumping to locations. THANK YOU! -JOURNAL, NO. Not needed given what was provided in the MAP. Integrating the map and objectives by location was a nice touch. There also was no need to write anything down for future mini-games as usually happens when there is no journal. -Collectibles, None. Achievements, None. -Graphics & Artwork were beautiful, crisp, elegant, and consistent with the motif of the GRIM TALES that came before it. -Layered Puzzles, NO. That's a nice to have that is appearing in more and more games. -Music. It was fine, but I kept it turned down as it didn't seem to add much to the story. -Sound effects. These were mostly fine, but a few became a little obnoxious. For example, a crystal giant falls asleep and snores. Each time the gamer goes to that location (and it is a few times) the snoring is the only thing that can be heard and that got to be kind of grating so I turned sound effects down. -VO/Cut-Scenes. These were all very well done and enjoyable. -Adventure Aspects. Even with a map showing objectives for each area and the areas where action can be taken, it was not always obvious what to do next so it took a little brain power and I thoroughly enjoyed that. Now on to Irritants/Pet Peeves: -HINTS - In hardcore mode there are not supposed to be any hints. However, the designers for some reason chose to leave a square outline presumably where the hint button would be. No big deal right? Well let the cursor wander too close and a scolding message appears saying something to the effect that -- "if you wanted hints you should have chosen another mode". Given the game is fairly long this GOT OLD FAST. -Black bar hints - These guys can't help themselves. Even in hardcore mode there were black bar hints all over the place. It would be nice to click on something & have the black bar indicate what the item or area is, such as "fuse box" or "bare ground" rather than "you could plant something here". Yeesh. -Inventory - some items hung around a longggggggggg time cluttering up the inventory before they could be used -A little buggy. I am thinking there will be an update to come out soon. On the list of tasks shown on the map was line of code "str_tsk_oldcity_win_roots. Didn't seem to hurt game play. This is a great game. I highly recommend it and hope others enjoy playing it as much as I did. January 7, 2013
A Bit Of A Let Down... I have played other games by this developer, and this particular game doesn't do them justice. There is a map that allows a player to teleport, but there is no journal. The hint system (as is usually always the case with this developer) is outstanding. But there are no achievements (zero, zilch, zip, nada), and there is nothing to to collect (no morping objects, no butterflies, no flowers, no anything). Although I purchased the CE, I feel disappointed nonetheless. Like I said... I have played other games by this developer (which were outstanding) but with this game I feel a bit short changed. started off so well..... but was grateful when it finished. i normally really enjoy this type of game with the right balance of HOS and action but this is set over about 8 different scenes of which you just go back and forth, back and forth continuously, and a lot of the items to be used just dont make sense as to why you would use them.... and because the game goes back and forth so often, you completely forget where things are that need doing and what item you will need. I appreciate there is a map, and you can jump around using it, but it completey defeats the object for me... i love a game that flows (normally through chapters), thus you complete each chapter and move on to the next. it is a bit of a con to only use a few scenes... so ultimately found myself hitting the hint button continuously to remind me where i was going next. regret buying this one!! A Real Winner This new offer from Grim Tales has all the elements for excellent gaming. It's challenging enough to keep you on your toes, and there is plenty to do. It's a relief not to have to listen to background music droning on and on throughout the game. The music / sound effects that do come into play are very good. HOS are nicely done, and the puzzles offer sufficient challenge. January 3, 2013
Elephant games doesnt make the mark I have played other Grimm Tales and I like some but overall there are some things I feel uncomfortable with: The picture quality is clear but sometimes very small and the music does not always follow the storyline. The cutscenes are good and I wish that quality would follow to the game proper. I just feel that I have to make an extra effort to play the game and move it forward. If youhave time and patient - you will enjoy this game. January 3, 2013
