This time a definite buy!!!!! Tried the CE of this exciting game and decided to wait for this version, as the offered extras in the CE weren't sufficient for me. Once more, Detective Dupin needs your help... Interesting investigations, graphics: typical ERS-style - clear and detailed. As always: 3 modes to choose, can be changed during the game. We have a journal and a helpful hint (showing you, where to go next). Together with the inventory we have a very cude Newfoundland, helping us with his sniffing abilities, when needed. When he is barking, you should look in your inventory for an item marked with a pawprint. Show this item to your doggy-friend and he will react immediately.... HOS are very interactive, some with integrated puzzles, that's fun!! We have enjoyable minigames - not too challenging. Yes, I do recommend this version!! February 8, 2013
Dark Tales Back On Form GAME COMPLETED TWICE M. Dupin has invited his ?friend? (that's us - another promotion!) to join him as he pays a visit to a friend who believes he has found a map to Captain Kidd?s lost treasure. This is another story by Poe and one we simply can?t hear too much of, and so we?re off to the seaside! The introduction to this game is worth the price. Before we even start we have: ? A delightfully dramatic opening, very movie-like ? Very un-ERS-like and totally wonderful original music ? Replayable puzzles and HOS Very soon after, we also meet our new side-kick, a very well trained St Bernard who will help us by sniffing out clues ? literally, of course. And there?s much to do, the code needs deciphering, a masked man and a mysterious woman seem to be intent on harming our friend. The puzzles are good, all pretty easy and well explained, with enough variety in them to stay interesting. The HOS come in two modes, the standard interactive list and the newer style of silhouettes where to find one item you must first find another and another and... I for one am thankful to see a game using a variety of HO styles. We have more help than usual with a journal, a map, and a hint button. The graphics are of course excellent, extraordinary colour. M. Dupin remains charming (I was amused to discover, though, that we are a little more cynical about our famous friend these days ? the journal is quite amusing at times.), the good guys win in the end, how could we want more? I heartily recommend this game! April 5, 2013
Interesting Adventure Game ? An unexpected surprise! Intriguing! Not being a Poe fan, I might have passed on this one but am glad I didn?t. The game is entertaining without the grim and gory atmosphere that I was expecting. Are you willing to assist Dupin as he follows the trail of a masked stranger, villain or victim unknown? Will Legrand actually find the lost treasure of Captain Kidd? The opening cutscene is fabulous and draws you into the story. A rousing sense of urgency is evoked by the exhilarating music. The graphics are well done and I was amazed at the degree of colour in the scenes, the close-ups and especially the minigames. I found the characters convincing and the voices realistic. Dupin and Legrand are both appealing. You will want to help them. There are enough cutscenes and animation to move the story along and enhance the suspense. This is important as the gameplay itself is not overly challenging. The HOS are the usual type, shapes and lists, with some interactivity. If you like puzzles, you will find plenty of familiar ones. A journal records the clues you need and the usual hint feature is available. There is no map (in the demo anyway) but inventory is used within a location or two so there is not much backtracking. I loved Arthur! When a whimpering bundle is tossed from the pier in the opening scene, I couldn?t wait to get the item I needed to free the puppy trapped inside. Soon after, you encounter an angry and wailing Newfoundlander who becomes a sweatheart when the two are united. Arthur and his keen sense of smell will help you in your quest. When he barks, he is ready to help. It is delightful! You can just play the game, or you can allow yourself to be immersed in the adventure. The choice is yours. I played the demo, bought the game, and will be checking out the others in the Dark Tales series! February 8, 2013
Dirty trick! The old bait and switch. The demo was very nice - had some neat puzzles, "use an item to get an item" H0's, a few clever inventory uses and the promise of hunting pirate treasure. I wasn't quite intrigued enough to buy the CE but looked forward to purchasing this SE. What a let down! Once the demo chapters are over, this game is nothing but back-to-back standard H0's, back-to-basics puzzles and tedious back-tracking. Speaking of back, that's how I want my money. The devs polished up the first chapters, promising a decent game, and then tossed the rest together with leftover bits from all of their last year's games. "Play the demo, see if you like it!" would be very, very bad advice. I tried to give it a chance, hoping that later chapters wold be better but after an hour I was just too bored to go any further. I'll be very careful to read all the reviews of an Ers game from now on. February 8, 2013
Another good ERS game This is pretty much like the other Dark tales. Great graphics and has voice over. Music is not bad. It is pretty much straight forward and not going all over the place to find items. The HOS are not the normal ones. You have to find items to solve the HOS. Not hard at all. The puzzles are pretty easy also. The hint button works good if you need it. Pretty easy game. You have a dog to help in the game. Not a bad game to play. Pretty straight forward. No special items to find during the game. February 8, 2013
Gold Bug I found this game fun to play, but I wasn't blown away. Good graphics and voiceovers, and plenty of interactive things to do. There are a lot of simple puzzles but not a lot of HO's and they are a mixture of list items and find the silloutted items both of which are interactive such as dig a hole, put a flower in the hole, water the flower etc. A new feature in this game is a Neufoundland dog named Arthur that travels with you and a paw print alerts you that Arthur has some work to do sniffing out clues! Good game to have fun with. February 8, 2013
Excellent game Well they did it again, another excellent game. You are travelling with Inspector Dupin(again), and going to see a friend of his who thinks he`s discovered Captain Kidd`s treasures. HO scenes" different than others, as you will have silhouettes of the object you must find and then sometimes will have to interact with other HO such as you might find a shovel handle and then have to blend it with the shovel part to make a whole shovel that you have to find and maybe use to find another object. There are even puzzles in the HO scenes that you have to solve to find hidden objects. You get to use a Newfoundland (dog) that aides you on your quest. When he barks, check your inventory items and see which has a 'paw print', that`s the item you will need and use. Hint charges slowly (for me), and I`m playing on the easy part. There is 3 levels that you can play on, and can be changed in the game at any time. Over-all a very, very easy game so far, I`m not sure how long the game is, as I`ve enjoyed the demo, so I bought it(with a free game) and am now downloading the rest of the game. Puzzles are some of the usual, such as turn one thing and several things move and you have to line them up(Gecko tails), frogs jumping over one another on lily pads(to get to the other side), and Majhongg tiles, etc. But the HO scenes are what sold me, like I stated above, not your usual hidden object scenes. Those who are experts at these types of games may say it`s too easy for them(which it is),as there is a lot of hand-holding involved, but so far a very relaxing game for me. I have all of the Dark Tales games and this is the easiest. February 8, 2013
Another winner!! I have been waiting for this game to come out and I am not disappointed at all. Very well drawn, fun games, interesting plot that takes you all around. You get a great helper (and darn cute too) and the hint button is a help when you need it. Some of the puzzles are a little difficult but you can always skip then if you want. Well worth the wait!! Excellent Poe Story with beautiful graphics and FUN!! Just the right amount of difficulty for me, without being frustrating. Best of all a game about The Gold Bug without any 'bugs' itself. Can that be possible ? Love the story book atmosphere with good cut scenes, and nice voice overs. Easy on the eyes too!!!! I loved it! February 8, 2013
Disappointed! Sorry about this review, but I was really looking forward to playing another of the Dark Tale games. Pros: Graphics-Cons: everything else. I only played the demo but I was bored to tears. Nothing new except a cute dog. I really feel let down by the developers of this game. Gamers are a little more savvy than you give them credit. There were expectations that just weren't met with this new game. Why bother spending more money just play one of the older games in the series. I gurantee you will enjoy it more and it won't cost you a penny. I definetly would not recommend buying this game. February 9, 2013
