Calavera: Day of the Dead Collector's Edition 4.3 5 108 108
Beautiful but HARD Game The Graphics are just lovely and the Storyline is uniquely different and very well done. The downside is: the Hint button is very SLOW to recharge. Puzzles don't have clear instructions and I skipped most of them because I didn't know what to do. I could not get "Widescreen" on my Computer if thought there was a Widescreen option. Moving from Scene to scene was slow also and that made the entire Game rather frustrating. Nice Game but because of all the "slowness" involved, I would not play it again. June 24, 2013
A bit quirky and different This game is different in a way to many games. No ghosts, spooky mansions and dead bodies. I played advanced level, only skipped two puzzles and had finished the main game in 2 1/2 hours. HOS nothing different, but all items were easily found. Hint and skip filled at a reasonable speed in the middle mode. Thank goodness for a map! Without one I think I'd have given up on the game as so many places to visit, and go back to. The hint system was a talking book that was amusing. Got the feeling that halfway through developing the game, they ran out of ideas as the first half was more entertaining than the second half. Not played the bonus content yet. There were collectables: a skull in each scene, and various posters. Didn't add anything to the game. The graphics were beautifully done, and the music was in keeping with the mood of the game. June 23, 2013
Cool storyline, humorous, but I'll wait for the SE TITLE Calavera: Day of the Dead Collector's Edition demo DEVELOPER Taba Games produced by Big Fish Games GENRE Interactive Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure STORY Catalina accepts Alan's marriage proposal, but wants her father's blessing, so the couple travels to Mexico, arriving in time for the Day of the Dead festival. At the train station, Alan discovers an animated talking book that warns him Catalina's in danger. But before they can leave, she's kidnapped skeletal figure who whisks her away in a flying train. Alan manages to hitch a ride and arrived in the Land of the Dead. Now he must find Catalina before it's too late. GAMEPLAY Inventory-driven adventure with interactive HO scenes, puzzles, and arcade-style mini-games. The HO scenes are of the list type. The puzzles are mostly familiar but presented in context. The mini-games are unusual in that they are arcade-style, which makes Calavera a quite different game. INTERFACE ? Map - shows active areas and transports ?? Journal - it's the talking book ?? Hint - identifies object in iHOs and is directional in adventure mode ?? Black Bar Tips - are sporadic, some areas have none EXTRAS ? Collectibles ? Achievements ? Morphing Objects ? Bonus Adventure ? Replay Puzzles ? Replay Hidden Object Scenes ? Strategy Guide ? Wallpapers ? Screen Savers ? Concept Art ? Music SETTINGS ? Sound Effects Volume ? Music Volume ? Voiceover Volume ? Fullscreen ? Widescreen ? Aspect Ratio ? Custom Cursor ? Toggle Active Area Sparkles ? Toggle Navigation Sparkles 3 Difficulty Modes GRAPHICS & ANIMATION Graphics have a handpainted appearance, but don't lack texture, detail, or color. Items in the HOs are clear and easily recognizable. In-game animation is smooth. Characters are somewhat cartoonish and there's no lip synching. MUSIC & SOUND & VOICEOVERS I didn't notice the music, so it must have been neither spectacular nor annoying. Game sounds were appropriate and ambient sounds were done well. Voiceovers were humorous with tongue-in-cheek "Inigo Montoya" accents. ANALYSIS I'm on the fence. The storyline is intriguing and I appreciate the humor, but I'm not a huge fan of the arcade-style mini-games. I prefer puzzles. Also, I saw no hint of a bonus adventure, so if achievements and collectibles are all the CE offers, I'd wait for the SE. I'll probably get this with a credit or game coupon when the SE comes out. WHAT A FUN AND DIFFERENT GAME This game was fun, funny and entertaining. If you want to try something just a bit off center and some humor, this game is for you. Plenty of achievements. I did not achieve them all so will play again and I NEVER play a game twice, but this will be worth it as it was such fun. Some games become a job, but this was just entertaining and fun. There were some challenging and definitely different puzzles and the HOS were not the ones that you can just check through in a few seconds, but yet things were able to be seen. The only con I found was the Bonus Game. Seemed like an afterthought. Seems that the developer was told a CE must have a Bonus Game so they told an intern to hurry up and throw one together. I would still have enjoyed the game as a CE without the Bonus Game. Give it a go and don't make your mind up to soon. Enjoy. June 28, 2013
Wonderfully Original based on Demo I thought this was a delightful game. the vo's were nice but not too much... like blah blah blah graphics nice and clear hos not to junky interactive map very nice :) mini game a bit different not your usual kind nice and refreshing. hint system works throughout and is useful that is a star by itself! not a dark game u can actually see (big plus) A must try! of course you have to go after your gf who has been kidnapped...gee have we seen this b4? that is about the only negative thing i really have to say about this game: but, then how many original story lines are left? this is a 4.5 star game not sure if waiting for se would make a difference or not since i only demoed the game. Happy gaming all the fishies in the big pond of life ^^ June 22, 2013
Different!!! The graphics are off the wall some, but fun. The hint button fills quickly. And what a laugh it gives. The hour went fast, just as I was into it. Will purchase, when the budget allows. June 22, 2013
Calavara day of the dead lots of fun and the storyline had just the right amount of humor.would recommend this game to serios gamers June 23, 2013
A Dark Comedy. Really too cute to be spooky. The blonde boy and the dark-haired girl are off to the old country to quaintly ask her father's blessing on their engagement/marriage. Of course, things rarely go as planned. Colorful artwork, interactive HOs and puzzles both simple and "puzzling" and collectibles make this game familiar while the Day of the Dead aspect keeps the story fresh. There are collectibles and award tasks, as well. The scenes are smallish and the cursor is slow and the HO scenes are not the best we have seen, but overall this is a good, not fantastic game. Though not worth the CE price, in my opinion, would make a fun SE purchase or coupon deal. June 22, 2013
Different ! Interesting game play, cute graphics, sound good, interaction was good. Would buy this game. Fun. June 22, 2013
Don't Forget to Listen to your Book! Talking book, extreme heat (why don't they put out summer games in winter & vice versa?#, slightly stupid male, female in trouble #not new#. The SG is good, hints are good #as long as you keep an eye on your book). It's a little bit slow. The tools you use move slowly, as is proper in summer in the Land of the Dead. As long as you don't mind the heat or the books sense of humor, this is a great game. Guess that's all the Guide Book bribed me to say. *giggle* June 22, 2013
