Grim Tales: Bloody Mary Collector's Edition 4.3 5 130 130
A very grim tale indeed! The story begins a bit 'same as' - you receive a phone call from your frightened niece and set off to investigate why the adults have all gone and the children are acting weird. So begins a very dark tale of possessed children and the being (Bloody Mary?) who drives them. There are 3 levels of challenge (Casual, Advanced and Hardcore). I played casual and found I had to use the hint rather more than I would have liked. The game is not as intuitive as some. Outside HOSs the hint tells you exactly what to do next, so brain cells not really exercised. There is an interactive map but it is very busy. This is a full CE with: * Bonus Chapter/Wallpapers/Concept Art/Music/Screen Saver * Collectible statues which, when you complete a set, gives you access to the cinema and Mary's back story * 10 achievements, mainly to do with completing HOS/puzzles without a hint or within a set time * A Hall of Memories * A furry helper to climb up things and get into small holes Puzzles are good with some original formats, they make you think but had no need to skip. HOSs (2 so far in the demo) are disappointing - very busy with lots of objects, a little interaction on a couple of items/move the dumb waiter shelf to reveal a further set of items. We have grown used to better than this. Music/sound was dramatic and atmospheric, but constantly so. There was no let up of induced tension which reduced the impact of the really 'scary' bits. Graphics clear and colourful. All in all, I enjoyed the gameplay, but the story made me uncomfortable with its bullying overtones. This, for me, reduces the fun factor. It is DEFINITELY one to try and I recommend that you do. Will I buy? I don't know yet. Certainly not in the 'bundle sale' as I have all the other games. When will BF realise that this is no offer for avid players? August 1, 2013
Review of Completed Game... I played the entire game including bonus chapter and extras and this version I would give a 3.5 but if I had bought the standard edition, I would have given it 5 stars. Here is why... This game has collectibles which are "characters representing fear" that look like chess pieces...kind of. Even though I found all but one of them, they weren't typical collectibles. I would rather have had morphs or something not so obscure to find. When you find them, it gives you extra story in the bonus section that you can read about the Bloody Mary curse. Also, there is a hall of memories that you can play after the bonus chapter. You start with a sun and that opens a hidden object scene you have already played and the item you get in that scene opens the next door which is a puzzle that is previously played in the game and so on...Then there is the bonus chapter which took me about 1.5 hours. Its a good length BUT I found it completely unnecessary to the storyline. It explained why there was a curse to begin with but it was tied into a love story with a mom who didn't approve of the fiance and didn't really tie in to the whole boarding school, creepy figure in the mirror type story. Basically I thought the extras package was lacking and that is why I take off stars for this edition. Now the main game was a whole different story. The main game was creepy! 1...2...Mary is coming for you. Reminded me of Nightmare on Elm Street with Freddy coming for you! and I am a big fan of cheesy horror movies so this was right up my alley. In terms of the series Grim Tales, don't expect it to be like the others in this series. You are helping your niece Jackie and I have no idea how she relates into your family tree in terms of Luisa from the previous ones. All the other ones tie into Luisa but this one didn't so I felt like even though it fit into the Grim Tales aspect well, it didn't quite fit the series if you have played them in order like I have. However, I did really enjoy what I played. Spooky enough, challenging enough, interactive hidden object scenes, an actual ending that was a satisfying conclusion hence why the bonus chapter really annoyed me because the conclusion of that chapter was not satisfying! As always this developer has amazing cutscenes, graphics, music and ambience. I had a lot of fun playing this game but I do not recommend getting the collector's edition due to the fact the bonuses aren't really worthy of paying extra for. The collectibles were not anything special and everything was pretty substandard. Wallpapers, concept art, strategy guide which I didn't need at all during the main game but needed A LOT in the bonus because it made no logical sense what needed to be done. So, I recommend this game BUT only as the standard edition. I would have given 5 stars for a wonderful game had I not had the disappointment of the extras. Cheers! April 8, 2014
Not my favorite grim tales, but a good game to play Another elephant game and this one is full of extras. The graphics are good not great. No voiceover but not really needed the way they make this one. To me the music was annoying. Has a map. Not fund of the hint button either. Tells you what and where to go. The HOS are good but small and cluttered, hard to find all the items. You have some devils to find as extras. This game has lots of extras to throw you off which does make it interesting. Just something about this game that did not make me think it was 5 stars. Good game just not great. August 1, 2013
Pretty tough game i love the Grim Tales games but this one I find difficult and I seemed to be looking for help more than I prefer to do. There are so many things to do and remember, you definitely need to take notes or you will get lost; or need a great memory. Story follows the same theme as others that have a ghoul school storytelling. I am going to have to think about this one as not sure it is all that much fun to feel so lost in what to do next. Maybe I will just have to get out a big tablet so I can make an outline of what I need and where it needs to be used. There is such a thing as challenging and then there is almost impossible and I find this to be close to impossible without help. If you are an Einstein, you will probably love this and give it a 5 star rating. August 1, 2013
Another Great Grim Tale! I've played all of the previous Grim Tale games and this one seems to be more exciting than the others. I was happy to see the collectibles and achievements but for a CE was disappointed to not see morphing objects which are always fun to look out for. I believe this particular CE though is still worth the extra money, especially with the bargain deal BF is offering for the previous Grim Tale games. August 1, 2013
Excellent game, falls off at the end Wow, I fell in love with this game when I first started playing - I adored the attention to detail, the creepiness, the sounds, the scare factor...it's so good!! This game really reminded me why I like the scary/horror HOPA games in the first place. So awesome! I still think it's a great game, but I have to say that, as the game went on I felt the energy of it's creators wane. Things become more 'messy' and by the time I got to the bonus chapter, some of the super-script barely makes sense and some of it isn't even finished. Like I said, I love it, but it does nose-dive after the first 3/4. September 15, 2013
Loved It! Beautiful graphics, interactive HOS, good puzzles - some easy/some challenging, and not an overwhelming number of locations (though there is a map if you get lost). August 24, 2013
Great Game You are saving your niece and everyone else at school. The bonus game is very good as you find out what really happend to Mary. I really enjoyed the fact that the HO's are many and you never go back to one previously played. August 14, 2013
BASED ON THE DEMO So far this has been very entertaining. It's creepy and really fun. I really like the story line and the mini games are different than most HOGS, so that was refreshing. My only complaint is...why doesn't your character grab her niece and get the heck out of there? I don't understand why they have to save all the other kids...forget them. Get in your car and drive away!! August 12, 2013
Another Great Grim Tales! I truly enjoyed playing this new Grim Tales. In fact, I have all the Grim Tales and purchase them without aid of the trial period. I just have one problem with this game that kept it from getting that 5th star. Grammatical errors. For Instance: "Catch The Lizard By Filling The Cells. Don't Let It Her Reach The Edge". "It Her"? Really? There were multiple errors like this one. If I recall correctly, there were no such problems in the other Grim Tales games. Or in any of the other Elephant games. Does Mr. Vallejo need to get a new editor? Just sayin' . . . August 10, 2013
