It is an epic adventure story with an exciting plot, outstanding puzzles, and unforeseeable depths of twists and turns. When Sarah Black, the curator of the Caribbean Naval Museum, receives a package from a mysterious messenger, she is unwittingly drawn into an ancient conflict. Moments after she opens the package to reveal an artifact, assailants descend on the museum and rob her of it. She can hardly believe that this is the beginning of a new nightmare from the deep! After blacking out in the museum, Sarah finds herself on the shores of Kingsmouth, a forgotten fishing town with an incredible secret. The would-be messenger reveals the sad truth: he and the rest of the town’s denizens are suffering from a curse that is gradually turning them into aquatic creatures. Another excellent eventure I played this game on the back of "Nightmares from the Deep - The Cursed Heart" so the story and the game-play experience were still fresh in my mind. I was expecting an awesome sequel and I was not disappointed, in fact I got more than I hoped for, With some games I don't care much for the story-line and even less for the characters, but this series is different, you like the characters and you want to help the victims and deal to the villains, you become a part of the story yourself. The artwork was once again beautiful, the character lip-syncing was excellent, the sound set the right mood, although I would have liked a little more background music at times. I enjoyed the hidden object scenes, there was just the right amount, and the puzzles were varied but not too hard, (which is a good thing for me because personally I don't enjoy puzzles that are too difficult, if they are I find myself skipping them which feels like cheating). The map showed places where there was activity to be completed and this time I was pleased to see you could instantly travel to these locations by clicking on them, an improvement on the original game. The bonus chapter seemed quite short but was enjoyable and set the scene for another installment, which I hope will be released real soon! If you enjoyed The Cursed Heart, then you will love this one just as much. August 18, 2013
Let Me Add To The Rave Reviews! That's Two SE's I'm Waiting For Now! I had never dreamed they would make a sequel to Nightmares From The Deep, so imagine my surprise when I saw this! The demo I played promised an adventure just as good as the first, but a lack of extras sees me waiting for the Standard Edition. The story follows the same main character, Ms. Black, on another adventure. The story is action-packed, gripping and terrifying, just like the first game in the series, and also sees the return of the chest revealing the background story. I personally enjoyed this story, although the one from the first series was better. The demo went by in a flash, but it lasted 50 minutes. As they say, ?time flies when you?re having fun.? The gameplay was great, and follows the same pattern from the previous game, so experienced players shall have no trouble. It seems to be a rarity for sequels these days, but some familiar characters have actually returned! The demo saw the return of Ms. Black and the mention of her daughter. I just hope the daughter plays a role! I noticed one big improvement in the gameplay- THERE IS AN INTERACTIVE MAP!!!!! For once, the developers have listened to the reviewers. The interactive map makes things so much easier and cuts the time needed for backtracking dramatically. My main concern- The demo was filled with cutscenes. At the beginning, there were more cutscenes than gameplay, which ticked me off a little, but as the demo went on, this improved to allow more gameplay. There were 2 types of HOS- Classic junkpile and silhouette scenes. I preferred the junkpile as it was easier. The silhouette ones were a little harder than I expected, as there was a mini puzzle to solve in each one- how I hate that! But if I ran in to trouble, the Strategy Guide was always there to lend a hand. As with the last game, we are given the opportunity to play Mahjong in the junkpile scenes instead of finding the objects. This proved to be a welcome, fun break for me, but, as with the last game, the Mahjong does get harder as you go along. To be honest, I did not find the junkpile HOS very challenging. The puzzles were a mixed bag. Some I found to be challenging, others easy. Whenever I got stuck, the Strategy Guide was there to lend me a hand. The graphics, once again, are outstanding. The artwork is top-class, the scenes are well-drawn and extremely clear. Well done, Artifex Mundi. Voice-overs were standard, nothing brilliant, but not terrible either. I can?t really make a comment there. FEATURES - 3 modes of play- Casual, Advanced, Hard. I played Casual. From what I gather, gameplay modes cannot be switched in-game. - Hint and Skip- both recharge fast outside HOS. Hint is also extremely helpful - 12 Collectible golden fish tokens to reveal the backstory of this game (works exactly like the doubloons from the first game). - Diary to keep track of events. Diary also stores objectives. - Interactive map- saves a lot of time on backtracking, a major issue in the last game. CE EXCLUSIVES - Built in Strategy Guide- very helpful for puzzle solutions. I had to use it more than once. - Achievements - Collectible morphing objects and other things - Bonus Chapter - Concept Art - Replay HOS - Replay puzzles - Replay cutscenes The new installment of Nightmares From The Deep should prove to be just as great as the first. However, as I said before, I will wait for the SE due to lack of exciting extras and budget. July 26, 2013
What an awesome sequel! There is so much to love and appreciate with this new CE sequel from Artifex Mundi. The storyline begins with a fishman who has come to enlist the help of Mrs. Black to save his friend Calliope (a mermaid). She is taken to the island and meets the characters who she hopes to help along with saving Calliope. The hour passed so quickly that I was shocked when time was up. There are so many extras with this game that can be played in Casual, Advanced and Expert. The map is interactive and can jump from place to place, there are 29 achievements, 18 morphing parrots and 7 secret seahorses. The hint button works in and out of the hos. I was so totally involved I forgot to check the strategy guide. There is also a journal that helps you follow along and gives you a list of objectives that you get checked off as you accomplish them. This beautifully crafted and musically well done CE was well worth the wait. July 25, 2013
Great HOG, Adventure Game I am blown away by this game. It is fun, keeps you interested & just enough challenge to be worth playing. The graphics are bright & clear even in a "dark" scene. The voice overs are good. The music is appropriate for this game. HOGs are different types with some straight HOGs Puzzles are challenging but solveable or you can skip. I play them. Storyline is usual Damsel in distress, but fun.... Your job is to rescue Calliope..... The cut scenes are abrupt, & a couple of times when my screen went black I tho't I lost the game. That is the only downwer for me. I haven't used the map or hints so I can't address them. I also haven't done any of the "collecting. I just keep moving forward...... This is a must buy for me. . Loved it! Awesome game! Great story and puzzles, and the cut-scenes are amazing! November 2, 2013
Kept Me in My Seat! What a Great game! Finished it in record time as I just couldn't stop playing..thouroughly enjoyed it! The only little bad thing about it was that I had it set on hard, and the puzzles were too easy and it only took me seconds to complete the HO scenes. But that aside, the storyline was good, and it has left me waiting for the next installment to see what Davy Jones throws at me next. The bonus chapter I felt was a little short, and the collectable items weren't that difficult to find..probably worth just gettting this as an SE rather than CE, but that's just my opinion :). One word: Fantastic I'm usually the one looking for reviews before purchasing a game, but I had to write my own for this one. I was hooked from the beginning. It felt like being in the game wanting to help save the siren. Super minigames and I never got bored playing. The only disappointment was that it ended. I actually liked this second series game better than the first. Super job for this developer! Keep em' coming... September 6, 2013
Up there with "Song of the Phoenix" Story has lots of details and more twists and turns than your average adventure. A perfect balance of good and evil that continues the prequel and opens up hope for a third chapter. September 2, 2013
Better than the first one.... Stunning graphics, cut-scenes, and voice-overs. This game had all the essentials for a CE qualification. Achievements to earn and plenty of collectibles to gather. A couple of different varieties of hidden object games, and a few varieties of puzzle games - although all the puzzles were way too easy. Story flowed well and was a good length. Bonus chapter followed on from main game but wasn't essential to the story line. Was a bit on the short side. Definitely recommend this game, and would lean towards to CE version if not for the bonus chapter, then for the bonus collectibles. August 18, 2013
Really Outstanding Game I love this game. There are lots of cut scenes, which usually I'm not a fan of, but these are great. It's like an interactive movie, almost. I really liked the first game, and this one is just as good, to me. Pros: + The story is interesting. Yes, you're saving someone, but it has a twist. Background story is told in the same way as in the first game, by giving coins you find to a storytelling character. + Wonderful graphics. + Excellent music. Excellent voice overs. + H0 scenes are interactive, and some are the kind where you find an item, use it on another item, repeat, and then those have mini-puzzles within them. Very good! + Puzzles are excellent. Many of them are new takes on old puzzles, and some are a combination of different puzzle types. + There is a jump map. + There are loads of different collectibles, morphing items, etc. + Achievements. The achievements area in the game is very well done. There are areas to see all of the collectibles, an area for story-based achievements, and then an area for puzzle, hidden object, and mahjong achievements. + Added to that, some collectibles require you to do little interactions, which is cool. + You can play a game of mahjong instead of doing a hidden object scene. + There is an awesome amount of detail in the little things in the game, like the last one. Pamphlets are readable, you can look at certain pages of books, read some newspaper columns from leftover papers, etc. None of it seems to be crucial to finishing the game or getting clues, but it's still really neat to me. Cons: - There are a few scenes that are a little too dark. - Some collectibles seem to become available only after you've done certain things in the game (I think), so you have to backtrack to get them. I could be wrong about this, though. All in all, this is an excellent game. There's a ton to see, do, and collect. The puzzles are actually interesting, and the story gets more and more interesting the more you play. July 25, 2013
