Sable Maze: Norwich Caves Collector's Edition
Better Than The First Sable Maze, But Still Rather Average.
Once again, Daily Magic has failed to wow me. This is their fifth game now, and I have bought one of their past four (which I loved). I don?t know what it is: Maybe it?s the story, maybe it?s the gameplay, or maybe it?s that I didn?t like the first Sable Maze. I don?t know, but this game didn?t appeal to me that much.
The story started off a little boring. The opening cutscene wasn?t very interesting at all, but then the story got better as the game progressed. The main villain of the story is one that I didn?t expect, and is a nice twist. I?ll give them that. But, apart from that, nothing really that interesting happened in the demo. But in comparison to the first Sable Maze, the story was MUCH better, even if it wasn?t that gripping.
The gameplay was good, but not great. The last game got me with the gameplay, but this one won?t, sadly. The best thing about the gameplay was the HOS. The HOS were unique, in a good way. Some developers do unique HOS and they fail miserably, but these guys didn?t. I enjoyed every HOS I played. They were fun and challenging.
The puzzles were also enjoyable. To my surprise, I could actually complete most of them, which was nice.
Overall, the gameplay was probably the best part of the game.
The graphics were the same from these devs; fairly good, almost realistic and lots of attention to detail. I?m amazed at how game makers can do such a great job. I tried once, and it was a mess?
I didn?t pay much attention to the music, because it was very quiet. It?s nice for those who like the game to be peaceful and don?t like loud, off-putting music like myself. If you want to make a comment on the music, TURN THE VOLUME UP!!! :)
Voice-overs were standard. They weren?t over-done, but they weren?t terrific either. I can?t really make a comment there.
- 3 modes of difficulty: Casual, Advanced and Hard. I played Casual. Difficulty can be swapped in game if you find it too easy or hard.
- Hint and Skip- both recharge fairly quickly on Casual and the hint is helpful outside HOS.
- No Diary, which I found incredibly odd.
- Interactive Map. The Map highlights areas that have a task that can be completed.
- Bonus Chapter- a completed game review says this is not needed.
- Built-in Strategy Guide- very helpful with puzzles and is helpful if you get stuck.
- Collectibles- You must collect 3 items for every student to find out more about them.
- The other usual Bonus Content such as Concept Art, Music, etc.
So, to conclude, I?d say this is an average game. Although it?s much better than the first Sable Maze, I still wasn?t tempted enough to buy it. I?d give it a rating of 3 stars out of 5. It wasn?t terrible, but it wasn?t outstanding either. The game seems to end conclusively, so it shouldn?t matter if you pick the CE or SE.

An Honest Review--Easy Going Game
I don't understand veteran gamers' reviews. Not deserving of 4 or 5 stars in my humble opinion--comparatively speaking.
The 1st Sable Maze had more depth and was geared toward the younger or beginner gaming audience. This 2nd Sable Maze is, again, very well done for beginners or for those who wish to have relaxing gameplay with little to no challenge.
At a loss here. Appears, to me, that we are merely paying for and playing interactive cartoons--what I refer to in my reviews as smoke, dust and mirrors.
Although this game is a refreshing diversion from the usual dark and gloomy games of late, the attempt for humor fell short and was a bit on the corny side. That is really the worse I can say about the game, other than being too easy.
Lost interest quickly as I prefer gameplay with more challenge or, at least, more interesting and creative puzzles/games.
Not to say this game is all that different from so many games nowadays. Seems to be an overall lack of skill progression by neglecting to offer games with increasingly difficult challenges that will improve and hone gamers' skills. Instead, we gamers are being put to sleep with child-like games rather than being read children's story books.
Enough already. Give us what you got BFG and don't hold back! We gamers can handle more challenge! ^_^

Short game....far too short for a CE 3 hours including bonus
Actually my perceptions and feelings about the game were precisely the same as "biscuitmamas".
The graphics are okay but not spectacular. Although the artwork lovely it is also bit flat and seems to lack that something special that makes it come to life. The sound is either too loud or too quiet and it is difficult to get it just right.
The HOS are progressive list type where you find an object and use it to find something else until you finally find the one object you need. I found the HOS had too much interaction to make them enjoyable and that's all there were...no mix or anything different to change it up..
Throughout the game you will find collage items that relate to each of the missing students but aside from that we only have the basic CE content thrown in.
I reiterate what "biscuitmama", that the story just didn?t come together for me. The first Sable Maze was very good but this version seems lackluster and not nearly as good. Needless to say, I certainly don?t think this is a CE quality game. Most especially that it only lasted 3 hours including bonus content!! that's a REAL BUMMER for me. I'm glad I waited for the labour day sale and I still feel that I overpaid.

average game to me
I just thought it was an average game. Nothing real exciting. The HOS were different where you needed to find one item to use on another until you solved the HOS. Puzzles were ok. Has voice over. The graphics were average to me. No map. Hint button works good if needed.
Pretty easy and straight forward game so will not need the hind button much.

Not a purchase for me.
I don't know what is more irritating in terms of yanking a person right out of a game. A game like Margrave, where there is an incomprehensible Brit accent, or this with an American trying to sound Brit and getting the pronunciation miserably wrong. Norwich isn't said Nor witch, the w is silent. When in doubt, pick a name that is not difficult.
That said there was a lot of back tracking as in find object at point M and then have to walk to point A to use it and then have to return to point M.

I played the game for a few minutes. Story line seemed fine but you can't stop the dialog and it does go on. Game is slow to react when selecting hidden objects or moving between scenes. Map indicates where you are but not any clue where there might be something to do other than a white button. Not as good as the first games. Middle of the road for me. If I purchase it will be for something to do not because this is a Fantastic game.

DISAPPOINTED, LACKING CHALLENGE & FUN FACTOR!!!!!
BASED ON COMPLETED GAME IN HARD MODE (3rd of 3) they still put sparkles here and there, plentiful black bar hints, hand held all the way through.
Those who like excellent graphics, cute puzzles offering no challenge, piles o' collectibles and awards should enjoy thoroughly
This formulaic, plug 'n play story was so lacking in originality that even gorgeous, intricate graphics and artwork with beautiful music could not overcome the tedium of more of the same.
The setting of a college campus could just as easily have been the typical island town, remote mansion on a cliff, or a Zeppelin for that matter.
The game construct is the usual plug 'n play: Player arrives at [College Campus] seeking, need I say it? [Children-College Children, but still?.] who [disappeared] after a mysterious discovery of a [Labyrinth beneath campus].
The player quickly discovers there is another mystery of [Ancient Evil dude who looks like a Greek God, so we get some eye candy at least] and the [professor] leading the investigation turns out to be a [bad guy! or is he?]
Given the rave reviews I suspect many will be annoyed that I did not share in the fun this time around.-But C'mon, how many games fit this scenario by plugging in the different variables?
The mini-games were beautifully put together but shamelessly easy sucking any potential for fun right out. Diagrams are provided showing the order in which to push buttons or stones or curtain cords.
Nothing is left for the player to puzzle over. Example: To open "portal" style opening all the player need do is find the missing wing-nut, then following the diagram that pops up to show the order in which to turn each of the other wing-nuts. How is that a mini-game? There are several instances like this. Is the message that players have so little gray matter that they need to be told step by step what to do? Seriously? What's the point?
HOS IMHO were the most interesting part of the entire game. They tended to be a progression of find an item, use it to help find another item. For me some required thought as the next step was not obvious and this I appreciated.
There were plenty of collectibles- find 3 Butterflies, then 3 of this and 3 of that. Progress can be viewed at any time.
This was well done and I did like that the items could be found just about anywhere. Plenty of achievements and the way they were announced was not at all intrusive. -Also a nice touch.
There is also a good amount of finding shapes to plug in to complete a mini-game gain access.
Sorry-I know this will annoy many, but when there is a "HARD MODE" can't we please turn off the blatant black bar hints and leave off the hand holding? -For me if the puzzles, adventure, and HOS FUN are then it is not big deal to cookie-cut the storyline.

Dang!! I really wanted to like this game
Review based on demo only.
I thought this game had promise but I was sorely disappointed from the outset and at no point during the demo
did anything occur to make the game better. The premise of the game is typical with our heroine needing to rescue students lost in a labyrinth. Since I like mazes I thought there would be something compelling about the story and the tasks required as the game evolved. Unfortunately, the devs in Sable Maze do absolutely nothing new or even offer twists on the tasks required to make progress. I wonder why some devs practically insult our intelligence with some very mundane tasks. For example, there are a few leaves hiding something useful but we need to find a rake to remove them rather than just using a hand or a foot to do so.
There is a garden waterer spewing hot water that needs a spigot to turn it off rather than just kicking it out of the way to retrieve the desired object. Developers need to find new ways to keep player interest. Since there are now thousands of HOGs out there, the lack of ingenuity gets boring really quickly. On the plus side, the HOG scenes were good in that an initial item needed to be found to get to the second and so on and so forth. I liked that aspect. All of the puzzles in the demo were rather sophomoric. My 6 year old grandson could finish most of them easily. The graphics were decent but nothing to write home about and I'm pleased there were voiceovers with character lips moving. This game might appeal to novices to the genre but I doubt that veteran HOGgers will get too excited about Sable Maze.

The first thing I noticed about this game was the mediocre graphics. I have a very nice video card, so it was not my machine. The second thing I noticed was the level of challenge. It was poor. Because of the graphics and the level of challenge I do not think this game is worth the amount big fish is asking for it. The game is not very interesting as far as story line goes either.
