Shadow Shelter 3.7 5 113 113
Fun little game. I didn't really expect this game to be all that good. It isn't the hit of the century but it is unique and I like that. Some of the puzzles are new to me, some are easy, some are obvious trial & error puzzles, none are really difficult. But thats ok with me since the HO scenes were done well. I noticed that one reviewer disliked the part where you use different weapons to defeat "animals", I don't like seeing animals hurt in games, not even spiders or bugs, but that's not what you were asked to do in this game. The "animals" were either stuffed "trophies" (which I don't like, but you see them in lots of other games and since I wasn't the one made to kill it I can deal with it), pictures or paintings, and you weren't "killing the animals", it was the demon using the depiction of the animals to keep you from proceeding, and you were using the typical weapons you would use for that specific animal to defeat the demon. You see the ghostly figure of the animals looking very demonic, not at all like real animals, so I didn't feel like I was murdering innocent animals. There aren't alot HO scenes, thank goodness, and they are clear enough to see even though they're dark. They put a neat twist on it having sketches of the objects you need to find rather than just the word or picture. The graphics are great. That was a big surprise coming from a game made by Nevosoft. The hand was cool, but my favorite was the anatomical mannequin type thing, it really creeped me out. I played this game nonstop from start to finish, it just drew me in. I does have an annoying aspect, and that's the loading between sections of rooms. It isn't between every room thank goodness, but it goes through a 10-15 second loading screen every 4-5 rooms or so. Maybe it helps the game run better and the graphics look nicer when it doesn't have the entire collection of rooms loaded at all times. It was annoying at first but I got over it once I discovered the map & knew which areas it would have to load. It is a jump map, which is nice because then you can skip a few loading screens in between locations if you have to get to the other side of the house. I say give a shot, more than just 20 mins, because you can't learn anything about a game in less than 30 mins. January 20, 2014
A good creep fest, but not that scary! This isn't exactly the kind of game you can say "I thoroughly enjoyed that experience", only because it's dark (as much in theme as in visuals) and it's creepy (in a kind of decrepit, rancid, filthy, falling apart manor house way), but oh boy, this one draws you in and won't let go. There's no hand-holding here, even on 'Easy' mode. The map is a teleport map, but it can take quite a long time to move between scenes. Whilst you are waiting to go to a different room, your screen will show a quasi map with footprints moving around. At first I thought this must be significant in terms of moving to different areas, but 'no' it's just a time killer whilst you wait to go there. No biggie. At least it's not a frozen screen as we had recently with another game. Your Inventory, unusually, is at the top of the screen in this game, but what is vexing a lot of players is that the areas to unlock are mostly accessed to the left and right towards the bottom of your screen when your cursor changes to a large directional arrow. Hence, it's easy to go wandering around and around with no clue as to where to go because your map doesn't label locations. Even when you have objectives, you are often told "nothing more to do here". There are an awful lot of HOGs and no puzzles. The HOGs are lists and others you need to find from sketched drawings. These are often ambiguous and I spent ages looking for items I thought they depicted, when they were something else entirely. Also, in the demo my Hint button didn't work at all, but when I bought the game I had no problems, so the above was frustrating. You have a 'helper' in the form of a real hand, which I call 'Thing' (The Addams Family). There's also a real boy actor who reminds me of Damian from The Omen. Other than that, and the general spooky atmosphere, I haven't come across any huge spiders. The animals you shoot early on are already dead and stuffed. You're shooting nothing but Taxidermy and putting them out of their misery at that, as you are freeing their spirits. I don't see anything really occult or offensive in this one. Once you 'get' how the game mechanics work and you get used to those drawings in the HOS, this is a clever game that makes you think, doesn't babysit you and is entirely deserving of spending a credit or PCC on it. Unusual, creepy and challenging Work your way through a house of supernatural horrors with just an occasional hint and a map to guide you. Lovely gloomy atmosphere in an abandoned house with plenty of puzzles to solve and hidden object scenes to sort through. Some scenes offer you sketches of the items to find, others name them. None of them are too hard, navigation is straightforward (jump map) but there isn't much handholding on the way. January 20, 2014
Surprisingly Different And Enjoyable Game ... Great Graphics, Animations, Sounds & Special Effects ... I Really Enjoyed This Game, And With A Little More Polish And A Little Less "Loading", I Hope The Developer Has More To Come ... As You Get Into The Depths Of The Game It Is Advisable To Use The Map To Jump Directly To Where You Need To Go To Save On A Bit Of The "Loading" Between Areas ... January 24, 2014
Engaging but predictable Overall, the game was good. Visual quality lacked a bit but the story line was good and sound was pretty good. The game was predictable at times yet moments left me wondering what I was supposed to do since there was little to no instruction or help when I got stuck. But it was an enjoyable couple of hours and worth the reduced rate it sold for. January 20, 2014
Finally some HOS My review and purchase is to reward whoever determined that some of us out here want and enjoy plenty of HOS (and creative mini-puzzles), and minimal inventory. Still want the great, dark, fun storylines and scenes and graphics; but there are 2 distinct camps. Those who love HOS, creative clever mini-puzzles ie. original Madame Fate; and those who love tons of inventory and minimal HOS. So, thank you whoever you are for a new game with lots of HOS. something different This game starts with no messing about with filling your name or a long drawn out little movie, you get stuck into the game as you progress through the game you have to have your thinking cap on or you can't get any further into the game until you have finished all the tasks, but you can not get lost as there is also a simplicity to the game, just have to use logic the HOs are slightly different, but just as challenging as other games instead of words you seek pictures, the more little puzzles you finish the more you progress the game gets a little harder,so it keeps your level of challenge at a peek without the player realising it.The graphics are dark and moody and some scenes can be a bit edgy for the very young or fair of heart.overall excellent for something a little different. Beautiful and New, but... Love the new concept on HOS, beautiful artwork, definitely different. But the constant "loading" as you move between areas gets to be a bit much. 3-5 seconds of cut-scene with 7-10 seconds of loading, then about a minute of play, another 7-10 seconds of loading, and you start to drift off to sleep. A lot of back to back HOS, but they're of a mixed style and some I've never seen before. It's a shame about the loading issue detracting from an otherwise fantastic game. February 16, 2014
If you love Haunted Houses and HOs, this is for you. Shadow Shelter is not a game for those seeking unicorns and rainbows. It is definitely one of the creepiest of the games out there. Which is why I was surprised this was not rated higher as it is also one of the better executed games of this type. You will find no kitty helpers here and hurrah for that! What you will find is a game that with a very realistic presentation. It does not frighten with pirates, rubber spiders and glowing skeletons but with an truly decrepit ruin of a house full of demons and ghosts that are not at all amusing. (Ok, the hand was rather fun, I admit). Figuring out what to do with them is most of the fun. If atmosphere is what you are after, it is what you get. Art and ambiance are the big pluses. Expect a lot of object gathering and HOs. Great if you do not like games but I personally prefer games and not too many HOs or I would have rated this higher. The hidden object scenes where also often too dark for my eyes, although some have said they had no problems. I did enjoy the slightly different approach of using sketches rather than just a name list in the searches. Over all a great game for those who love hidden objects and scary movies. February 5, 2014
Quirky! Fun game with dark theme, fascinating scenes and set-up, different enough from other games to make it interesting, quirky things to interact with - I love it!! January 31, 2014
