Tales of Terror: House on the Hill Collector's Edition 3.5 5 63 63
Interesting Game This latest Tale of Terror is the usual Hidden Object/Puzzle Solving/Find Bonus Items game. It does have an interesting storyline and a good bonus chapter. What I truly like about it is the fact that, in the bonus chapter, you see two or three rooms in the house from a different point of view since you are playing the bonus chapter as a different character. I haven't seen this in any other game I've played on here. I recommend this game if you enjoyed the other Tales of Terror. July 25, 2014
Such A Waste of Great Live Actors - Review Of Completed Game I'll start by saying this is the 2nd in the series of the Tales of Terror. The first is Tales of Terror; Crimson Dawn. This game here definitely stands alone. If you haven't done so there is no need to play the first in the series before playing this game. 6 Chapters STRATEGY GUIDE: Since I read some issue with this. I also don't recall seeing this during the demo time. I didn't see it until after I purchased the game. Some didn't even see it then but for me it's located top left hand corner of the screen says "strategy guide." JOURNAL: Holds notes/some puzzle clues MAP: You get this a little into the game however I didn't even look at it but from my reading after I completed the game is a transporter one. GAME PLAY; HOPA: For me this was well balanced however the "adventure" side is pretty lite. I never got lost in the game. HOS: All found by word list with some slight interaction. I did come across one scene find the matching pairs. Each scene visited twice. PUZZLES: The usual run of the mill. Nothing I would consider new. I'm not a fan. Less the better. Having said this. These weren't hard at all for me. VISUAL/SOUND QUALITY: The graphics I thought were good. The live actors were top notch for me. Actually the best I've ever come across in a game that used live real actors. I thought they were excellent. A kudos to the developer here. LEVEL OF CHALLENGE: Here we go again. 3 play modes and the only difference between the harder two modes is the hint/skip are disabled in the hardest mode. Neither have sparkles (thank you) however both overloaded with black bar tips stating what needs to be done in the game. Since this developer isn't new here I deducted one star just for this and I will every time I see this in a game. I hope they do a CUSTOM MODE for their next game offering. I prefer no sparkles, no black bar tips. I like to figure out for myself FIRST. If I can't that is what the hint/skip are for. Please let me decide when I need "help" in the game. ANNOYING! STORY LINE: Well this started off with promise for me but after the demo went down the hill. Sorry but I thought this story was lame. I do think the developer here could of came up with a much better story than this one. I don't particularly like spiders (no phobia though) but I know some do have a phobia: If you have a spider phobia well a few in this game are pretty huge. The main game came to a conclusion for me. I didn't feel the bonus chapter was needed. Truth be told I think this developer could of just put this so called "bonus" chapter right in with the main game. It didn't add anything to the game for me and was very short. It only took me about 1/2 hour and I'm not the fastest player by any means. I usually spend an hour minimum on the bonus chapter and while it did come to conclusion it's very abrupt. I thought it ended very abrupt. As for locations a few are from main game and there a few new locations. Bonus chapter should be all new locations. I deducted one star for this story. MY PLAY TIME; Main game: 3 1/2 hours. Bonus Chapter 1/2 hour. No hints, skips, map or strategy guide used. The overall game length was fine but that bonus chapter seemed very short to me. It seemed I just got started on it and it was over. FUN FACTOR: Overall an OK time passer game. With the exception of the black bar tips (could of been just a bit more challenging) I did enjoy the game play. I also thought with such excellent live actors in my opinion anyway the story could of been so much better and definitely more suspenseful as it did start out a bit creepy/eerie. Sorry but not worthy of $13.99 in my opinion and yet another truth be told not even worthy of the $9.99 I paid for it. This is one game I wish I waited for the SE and purchased with a punch card coupon code. It's definitely worthy purchasing as a SE if you have punch card codes that are about to expire or the daily deal/catch of the week $2.99 price. Not anymore than this and again my opinion. CE Extras: Achievements which are performance based, 46 collectible hearts to find, 8 wallpapers and 8 concept art. So overall 3 stars from me. Sorry Big Fish and developer but I don't recommend this as a CE. Achievements/collectibles don't cut it for me especially when I found no rhyme/reason to finding the hearts. I do however look forward to this developer's next game offering and hopefully an improvement. As always though, definitely give it a whirl and decide for yourself. May 17, 2014
Promising game if it weren't for the sloppy and problematic tech issues I purchased this game because it's a CE and a sale was on and normally I don't have problems with what is supposedly a high end game. But this game has some serious flow issues, the scenes keep getting slower and slower to move through, the pointer jumps and freezes. The music is static and breaks often. The developers did not fine tune this game for seamless and smooth running play. It makes is very frustrating playing a game that runs poorly. Please fix the issues or I will not be purchasing from this developer again. The same kind of issues were in the first 2 Exorcist games....A good little game but DEFINITELY NOT CE VALUE, or any value until it's repaired. May 17, 2014
TERRIFYING HOUSE - RESCUE YOUR SISTER Not a bad game and I found it quite enjoyable. You have: * Casual, Expert and Professional modes of play; * Live actors and voiceovers; * Achievements board; * Journal; * Interactive map; and * Find the Hearts throughout the game and bonus. I quite liked the live actors. It made a nice change and they seemed to enjoy doing it. I noticed straight away what Shihtzumum said above about Sam looking like Justin Timberlake. She is absolutely correct. He DOES look like him. The graphics are very good and I had no trouble at all locating the clues and Hearts. Sound is good. I didn't really notice the music. Apart from the very first mini game which was quite hard to conquer, the rest of them were relatively easy. The hidden object games were all very easy and didn't take long to do at all. There were a few new ones which I hadn't done before, so that was good. It took me about 5 hours all up to do the game and bonus. I think the developers did try hard and it will be interesting to see what they bring to us in the future. They are on the right track and hopefully the next game may bring us a bit more challenge. So overall, I enjoyed the game. Not very challenging for experts but definitely recommended. May 30, 2014
Good HOG, minor changes would make this excellent Just played through the CE game, so here's the conclusion: - Overall a good game - basic puzzles (nothing ground breaking) - Interesting story, though offers nothing that really stays in your mind longer than how long the game takes to play - I love it when you have the chance to increase/decrease how challenging the game is, and with this game you can. Though the cursor is still taking some fun out when it changes around certain areas. - The acting in this game is POOR. It uses real life video of characters and you can tell they're just reading their lines and nothing more. It's so poor it's not even funny. I still give this HOG strong 3/5, though I wouldn't buy this unless you have a coupon or it's -50% day. June 15, 2014
disappointed althought it kept me playing the game till the end I have to say that its just not in the same quality as Grim Faade games etc, didn't find it enough of a challenge, for a medium game its okay June 3, 2014
OK, but not worth buying the CE. The biggest peeve that I've had this this game is that the mix of live actors with very cartoony artwork just comes off terrible. Not a very scary game at all and the art style just doesn't match the setting. June 1, 2014
Not the best game in this genre I've played a TON of these kind of hidden object games with mini-games throughout and I was just not impressed with this one. There were several instances when I had no idea what to do and the solution was very counter-intuitive. For example, at one point I came across a door with 3 star-shaped keys, I had a tool that worked to open one of the keys and then it disappeared. I thought it was a glitch, but it turned out that a different tool from somewhere else in the game was needed to unlock the final two keys. Why? It made no sense. In addition the graphic weren't ask crisp as I prefer and the story line unconvincing. May 31, 2014
Disappointed This game was not at all scary or creepy. I didn't find it very impacting in any matter (story, visual, puzzle, any other twists). It was just so-so. I was especially NOT impressed by the storyline, which is crucial to me - the idea was good, but there wasn't enough actual story in the piece to make me feel drawn-in or involved. It felt more like a puzzle game than a true adventure! May 28, 2014
It was between ok and liked it. I expected to really love this CC game. Found it to be lacking. As crazy as this sounds, the whole game felt sloppy to me. Also, the human characters looked like they were laughing while doing their story lines. June 13, 2014
