A Portrait Of Death Did anyone notice how much demo time was given! I was fortunate enough to review the beta version, and good things come to those who wait, it may have taken a while but now I get to take advantage of this weekends sale! Stephan Black lost his wife and young son Charlie to a horrible illness, "I will make a deal with Death herself" he vowed in anger. And she indeed fulfilled his wish, in return he captured new souls for Death, by painting their portraits and trapping them in his Gothic Manor. You must reconstruct your portrait before Death claims your soul, you will need to enter the portrait traps of other victims and free their souls as you search for the missing canvas pieces of your own portrait. Captivating story, perfect execution of game mechanics, superior game period! I love the morphs, the harder I have to look the better and I did have to look pretty intensely for a few of these morphing objects, 30 in total. You are given a pearl rosary which happens to be missing several pearls. If you can find all of the pearls (some of those little balls are hard to spot first time around) this rosary will protect you from Death, now that would put finding those pearls at the top of my to do list, but they are far and few between and Death is breathing down my neck! The hidden object scenes are slightly interactive list finds which may require you to uncover something or take the lid off of a jar. I loved the mini games even though they weren't new, such as rotating 4 pillars and swapping tiles into an empty space until each pillar has red, green, blue and then yellow tiles that line up across all 4 pillars. You will earn achievements along the way for not skipping mini games or not using the hint system during an HOS. There is a good map system for traveling to different areas, you will need to use the map, there are tons of rooms, and several portrait portals to enter which can become disorienting at times. This is a well produced game, it is apparent that the devs treated this game like a baby, the dedication is obvious in every aspect of this game. I will be purchasing this game in the Collectors Edition (I do love those morphs) I am one of those players that love the dark gothic, haunted manor, games, a little bit of sunshine is okay but put me in a haunted manor and I'm good to go. Have a safe holiday this long weekend and enjoy! May 24, 2014
I Am So Glad I Didn't Pass On This One!!! I tried the beta of the game and didn't particularly care for it but with the weekend sale and needing another CE for the two-for-one sale decided to go ahead and get the game. Wow, I am sure happy that I didn't pass this one up. It takes a bit to really get into but it is such a great game when it gets going, Now, others have complained about the angel giggling but she only does that when the hint button recharges. I have hardly heard her giggle at all in the game but if you do use the hint button a lot, you will get that little giggle to let you know the button is ready once again. That being said, given the subject of the game, the devs could really have passed on the angel as cute as she is. The game is a bit challenging and one or two of the puzzles took quite a bit of time to solve, one of them due to figuring out the mechanics. I like a game with challenge that doesn't make it too easy to figure out and this game has what I love. I am suspecting it is quite a long game since I have been at it most of the day off and on and am still only in chapter 4 of 9. Granted I have been stopping to cook and do household sorts of things but then I do go right back. Unfortunately, there are two things that I do not like about the game and I really think the devs should consider making changes for future games. The most significant item is that all puzzles must have a reset button. I ended up skipping one puzzle simply because I could not reset it and it seemed like too much work to keep going once I created a mess. The other item is that with a game as involved as this one, and maybe I have become a tad bit spoiled, is that the map does not show where there are active tasks. With so many locations to visit and a lot of backtracking required, it is very time consuming to figure out where something I saw early in the game and then totally forgot about is located. Please devs consider adding reset buttons to your puzzles and available task indicators to the map. Aside from the two issues mentioned above, I love the game and think it is so excellent. I can recommend without hesitation that you at least give it a try. May 24, 2014
Don't have your portrait painted in Paris! You are Amelie, a Parisian beauty who agrees to allow Stephan Black to paint her portrait, and winds up trapped in a gothic mansion with 8 other women who also had their portraits painted! It seems Stephan has made a pact with Death - who happens to be a woman - to keep painting women and then painting prisons for them so Death can eventually get them. So we have seen the "save the woman in the painting" theme before, but this one is still fun. And even when you save the woman, it seems Death gets her anyway! You must need the Soul Vial the priest left you to collect and save the captured souls. To enter each portrait, you need a colored jewel. Plus you are also trying to find 33 rosary beads that the priest told you would protect you from Death. One of the women -- Stefan's wife? - told you to restore your portrait from the place you were originally painted, before Stefan paints a picture jail for you, in order to escape. So much to do here! And he tore your picture into 15 pieces! The HOS are mostly lists, except the first one was a list of silhouettes that were nicely hidden in the scene. Some of the mini-games were unique, but a few were repeats we have seen before. My favorite was to form four grouping of like items by rotating and swapping. The hint button is a guardian angel child that goes to sleep while she is re-charging. The map is quite a disappointment, however. First, it is hard to tell what scene is showing before you jump to it. Second, it is pretty useless - to me - because I normally rely on the map to tell me where to go next. This map doesn't show any activities waiting to be performed. So you have to rely on the hint button to take you to the next place - quite tedious, because I can never remember which room needed which object. Regardless, the graphics are very nice. The voiceovers are well-acted and the lips do move. You have 16 achievements, plus the rosary beads, plus 30 morphing objects. I only found 2 morphing objects so they are well hidden and hopefully the strategy guide will show where they are! There is no icon on the screen to tell you if the scene has one or not, unfortunately. The CE bling includes the Bonus chapter, wallpaper, art, soundtrack and screensaver, plus the strategy guide. There are only 3 modes of play. This is a very good game -- the third in the series. And quite fun to play. I just wish the map functioned in a more helpful fashion. With the special pricing this weekend, I will buy! May 24, 2014
Magical Paintings ? My Favourite! BASED ON DEMO FIRST IMPRESSIONS Excellent beginning, not at all like the norm, and extremely intriguing. Looks good, and Stephan?s pact with Death already has me hooked ? particularly because she?s a woman! SIGHTS & SOUNDS Much better than the previous games in series ? well, it should be, it?s been 4 years! Has same peculiar flat-finish look about it, but now we have vibrant colour it looks quite lovely. (The earlier games had nothing but greys and browns *yuck*) And the artists have captured the eyes of Stephan Black brilliantly ? they look alive and glow with intensity. Hint is a cherubic child with a fit of the giggles. If you know me, you know I?m a sucker for cute. But apparently it depends on the species. This is a variation on cute I?ve not seen before ? and one I will be glad not to see again! Eeek! *giggles maliciously* After the opening, there is not much in the way of voice, but it is all good. Done without attempt at lip synch. Ambient noise is wonderful ? creepy voices, creaking floorboards (or was that a door?), wind blowing through the gaps in walls. Great stuff. Music also good. Sometimes, after an important find, it wells up triumphantly. Other times, it sits quietly in the background murmuring about things that crawl in the dark. WHAT?S HAPPENING? A brilliant artist has made a pact with Death in order to save his wife and son. Now, he paints beautiful women, and they disappear. You are his latest victim. You are transported to his gloomy mansion, where you discover that your portrait is the means of your salvation. You must locate the 15 pieces of it to get home. You are ?at large? only as long as it takes Stephan Black to paint a ?painted prison? for you, as he has done to the others. You must find and rescue them from their various cages into the ?soul vial? so that they can be returned to their own lives. To do this you must travel into the worlds of the paintings. One thing I like a lot about this game is that there are lots of paintings, not just 2 or 3, that we unlock and visit, even if just for a HOP. GAMEPLAY As well as collecting pieces of your portrait, and souls of other victims, you will also need to collect 33 beads for the rosary a priest has given you in order to protect yourself from Death ? anyone smell ?big finale? in that? The adventure is easy but interesting. There are a smallish number of rooms in the mansion so far but plenty of paintings ? at least half a dozen navigable ones so far... There is a directional hint which is more use than I like, because there is no indicators at all on the jump map. Hint and skip fill very quickly on lowest of 3 levels of difficulty. The mini-games are easy, and numerous, the HOPs are fewer. They are interactive lists by word or image. One final unusual thing about this game ? the map and the journal with your story notes are in the top righthand corner, while the task list is in the left bottom and the cherub is on the right bottom. I found it quite comfortable. A solution, perhaps, for those games that have just too many gadgets to keep organised when all down with the inventory interface. CE BLING! The collectibles, which I think are essential to the game, are 30 rosary pearls. As well, there are morphing objects to collect and achievements. Standard gallery fare, bonus chapter and SG round things up. COMBINED IMPACT I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed this. The first of this series , Lord Of Mirrors, was an excellent HOG, even though the graphics were dismal. The 2nd game, Queen Of Death, was awful. The colours had me wanting to slash my wrists, and unfortunately the gameplay didn?t compensate that time. This game is good on both fronts, and has an interesting story as well! While not one of the mega games, this is one I am looking forward to finishing. One last thing has me curious ? there was an awful little girl in both the prequels, but I can?t see her showing up here... I just gotta know if she?s involved. May 25, 2014
Naysayers just do not get it They gave us 90 minutes to check it out because this is a game to take one's time over. If you did not find a morphing object, well that is because you are in it to speed. This is a game to savor, to enjoy pictures that are of things one would never put on the wall...giant jaws to crush things open...things to recall and get into place. This is a game to work the memory cells, and while I hate hate dark games, this game is not that dark, so it gives enough light to see what is being hunted and dark enough that the things are in that twilight place that they gloom out slowly to your recognition. That is one of the delights of HObj games that one is looking and then the thing as a word clicks as an object this game really gives that enjoyment a workout. With the sale this weekend, this is a good buy. I would not pay full price because it is not that innovative, but the solidity of the game is fully there and so is the sale. Some of the minigames are hard enough I skipped them to get further into the game and am looking forward to solving them when I own it. The HObj games could have been more interactive, but what they have of that quality was fun. I finished with 20 minutes left and went back and played it again with my partner. The HObj games change from one playing to the next so the game stays fresh for a retry and that is always good. He liked it a lot and also wants to get it, so we will be playing it again when we own it. It gets an A- from me, but with all the naysayers I had to give it five stars because it is just so much better than 3.5 It is a buy and if you miss the sale, definitely worth using your game credit on I have to find the second CE game I will buy with it. BF has given me a challenge ...glad this is a long weekend. May 24, 2014
Awesome job Top Evidence! Thanks to an awesome fishie we all know on here Justthefacts, and all the hard work she put on another website, I got to play the beta/survey version of this game and it rocks! The VO's are extremely well done, and I love that little guardian angel for a help button. She is so cute and so is that little laugh. I know that (because of the scenery), if something was going to jump out or come up sudden, my sitting down place and the floor will have an unexpected meeting. Story: It was time for death to take Stephan Black, but before that happened he made a deal with death. (Seriously, not a good thing). Death would let him live he would collect 100 souls for death. So he happened to see an innocent victim (and he thought his first soul) Amelie sitting on a park bench and she agreed to have her portrait done. Little did she realize from that point forward she was going to be the one to stop him. I am sure she wished that she had said no and just kept to reading her book :) The Graphics: So beautiful. Especially that first scene when it was a nice Summer/Spring day. And the spooky ones are downright spooky. Sound Effects: Really creepy. They couldn't of done it any better. I kept getting goosebumps in the beta version. And it's the same in the full version. Mini Games: They are fun and the challenge factor was just right for me. No problems on my end. Music: Creepy as well and goes great with the game. Map: It is a jump map and it does tell you where object are needed to be done. With these kind of maps I only use the strategy guide for help with puzzles if need be, or if I am extremely lost :) Collectibles: There are 30 morphing objects to be found in the game, but I didn't see any achievements. To me all in all I definitely give this game a 10/10. I am so looking forward to the rest of the game. Kudos to Top Evidence was an extremely well put together game. Love it! :D May 24, 2014
Painted Beauties Its been awhile since I've liked a game enough to give a review on it and this game I just loved and it's a buy for me on sale or not. The Visuals are outstanding and the V/O's are the best I've seen in a very long time. Finding what you need to save each woman is challenging in itself. I highly recommend this game. May 25, 2014
Great game! I really love this game. I have been playing for hours and Im not through half of the game. Love the morfing objects, nice music, challenging puzzles and excellent graphics. Dont miss this game. May 27, 2014
Great Game! Based on the demo I enjoyed the story and graphics and the clever way you enter each scene through the paintings. The voice overs were excellent and I for one loved the hint button of the little angel and her giggle. I enjoyed the music. The HO's and puzzles were not hard. This all made for a fun game to play. This game may not be for everyone... it's a matter of taste and challenge level. However I do recommend this game. May 24, 2014
