The Dark Shadow Well done BF you're thinking outside of the box! I'm referring to the custom setting option that allowed me to choose harder HOS and harder mini games. Please note that this is an option you choose in the custom difficulty, you don't have to check that box. This made the Hidden Object Scenes more challenging, but, the items weren't teeny tiny, they weren't partially hidden by another object, the scene wasn't blurry making the items hard to identify, they were simply hidden and well placed making the items seem as if they belonged there, and for the first time in a very long time I had to pay attention to every detail in order to spot the items. Not only that, I had to find the interactive parts by actually looking because my cursor didn't change over the items I needed to complete something such as finding sails for a sailboat! The mini games started out kind of easy making me doubt that the hard mini game mode had been activated, switching angels and demons to opposite sides without occupying a space next to each other, piece of cake! The arcade style shooting gallery where you aim at ducks with targets on them with different colors and sizes swimming by, I knocked down nearly every one, then they got a bit more difficult and by the time I got to the anchor gate puzzle I began to realize just how frustrating a hard mini game can be lol. This is just a stand alone game but there are collectibles to find which is always a treat. There are 18 busts or statues, 11 animals (they are a tad bit cartoonish compared to the rest of the game) and 44 posters of missing people to collect. You will come across tarot cards throughout the game, which you will take to the traveling Gypsy cart so she can read your tarot card and explain it's meaning, this seems to be her sole purpose in the game, she doesn't give you anything, there's nothing in her cart that you take or need, she just reads those occasional cards. I noticed that the bottom of my screen was cut off a wee bit in fullscreen but nothing major. You are summoned from London as an Inspector from the Royal Society of Skeptics to dispel rumors of dark magic. Middleport was always known as a safe harbor for pirates back in the day. It is believed that countless treasures are hidden beneath the city, but the pirates have warned that their booty has a hex and anyone who touches ye gold will unleash evil spirits upon the town. Even though that was many years ago, the people of Middleport believe that the curse is real, several people are missing and an evil entity has been seen by the few citizens that remain! A stranger in a mask has warned you to cease your investigation, he calls himself Ombrascura, the Dark Shadow, and the evil entity seems to be under his control! Is all this real, is the town cursed? It is up to you to figure out if the hex is real or if the entire town is being scammed, enjoy! June 11, 2014
Shhh, I'd like to 'Whisper' a little secret.... ... this is a pretty darned good game! In fact, some of the high points of this game were actually much better than the mainstream CE's out lately. Hey, let's face it, this game offered as much as many games released as CE's and yet it held a mini SE price tag and was actually quite refreshingly enjoyable even if not as well polished. Yes, IMHO, the devs did a fine job based on the fact they are not the 'big wigs' in the gaming industry not to mention the VOICE ACTING was BETTER than any game I've played of late. There were also some very nice creative aspects well worth the price of admission and a much better plot woven into the 'mix'. So, yes, some of the game by initial appearance seems to be similar to many others as being ''well rehearsed', yet it is deeper... it also offers artistic elements that are quite original and, in addition, mini games were short and sweet [the way I usually like them]. It will be the first game I've purchased in a while actually so that says something, eh?. I thought it a bit humorous that some reviewers gave a ONE or TWO star rating because "THE HINT BUTTON DOESN'T CHARGE FAST ENOUGH??!!! HAHAH Oh my gosh....not to mention there IS an option for that very preference one can customize if one truly 'needs' a hint button to guide game through a game at a speedy rate. Well, my advice is to give this game a 'real' try and hopefully you will enjoy this on it's own merits as a fun, reasonably priced, interestingly created 'individual' game that sort of stands out in the 'crowd' [in a good way]. Enjoy and happy gaming! : ) June 13, 2014
CE FOR THE PRICE OF SE SUMMARY: Game has all the important accoutrements that a CE offers except no bonus game. Lots of fun and things to do. There were 4 modes, one of which is customizable and you can choose harder HOS and/or mini-games if you want. Good story (see below) and smooth gameplay. Replayable - you get different HOS lists each time you play. Well put together and quality game. Other details: STORY: Pirates have hidden their booty beneath the town of Middleport and laid a curse on the treasure if someone else tried to claim it. People have been disappearing into thin air lately and you are called in to investigate, as the disappearances have a possible connection to the supernatural. GAMEPLAY: Smooth intuitive gameplay. As you play, be on the lookout for hidden (usually in plain view) animals, busts of people, and posters of the missing. You can teleport easily through the map. Good ratio of HOS and mini-games and puzzles; but note this is more of an adventure game than a HOG (i.e., you don't run across a HOS every 4 minutes). I tried replaying with the harder HOG and mini-games, and didn't notice a huge difference - I wasn't pulling my hair out. OTHER STUFF: Good animation - I was at first thrown off when the diary you were reading jumped up and down while you were traveling by train. Special effects were very good; the whisper of the dark cloud moving and dissipating into and through objects was done very well. Voices were very good. Graphics were a bit hazy, but I still found them acceptable (some people may be put off by them, but I think they add to the atmosphere of the subject of the game). June 11, 2014
Nice little game (full game review) First of all, there is nothing new here that will blow the gaming community's mind. But what is here is a really nice, well made little game. You get a lot of things that sometimes appear in CE games such as collectables, and that was a nice change. The graphics are lovely and the action smooth. you get to chose to speak with the characters in some of the scenes or just walk away. The HOS are good, nothing is too small or obtusely described (like wallet and it's a purse for example!). The puzzles are straightforward. But here is a departure on the ordinary, you get a custom choice and can choose how hard you want the HOS and puzzles to be - nice touch! But the bonus for me, being from the UK, is that the characters spoke genuine English accents! That alone is worth the 5 stars in my book! Too many times I have played games which are set in some village or town in England and the voice-overs have been Americans trying to speak the accent and it jars the whole atmosphere. If a CE version is made, I will buy it just for the (expected) bonus chapter. June 15, 2014
Whispered Legands Tales of mIddleport As a standard edition, you will find this game has much to offer, the town of Middleport needs you as an inspector from the society of skeptics, you have to track down the missing people of Middleport before darkness fall on the town forever. There are objects to fined ( animals and figures to find,) yes a very interactive game, hog's a bit small in some area's, but not off putting, music is good, graphics are good, I must have missed this if it did come out as a CE, but certainly worth a buy. Love Getting Lost in a Good game !! Just when I was getting bored of the same old Hidden Object games. This one grabbed me, and kept me playing.. Games are my time out's from life . June 11, 2014
Nice game, nothing really new but plenty to entertain There is nothing to really dislike about this game. It is fun to play, has all the tools you need (jump map, directional hint) for game play support and many collectibles that are enjoyable to look out for: * Statues * Animals * Missing person posters The graphics are a bit grainy at times, but in the zoom-ins they are good enough. The music is background and soothing most of the time. The 'gongs' when something was found/completed became a bit annoying. HOSs are all lists with 2 interactive items. Very simple in the main, but some items a bit tricky to find. Puzzles so far are pretty straightforward. But hey, today's sale means it only costs me 2:69 so is now added to my collection to play when we have a bit of a dearth or I have no connection to download. Give it a try, especially if you want a nice intro to HOGs. June 11, 2014
Great casual game The only reason I did not give this game five stars was because I know that most people expect elaborate cut scenes and lip syncing with the conversation. Things like that don't bother me. This game has clear graphics, the music was not annoying, The HOS and games are integrated into the story. I did not feel I was doing unrelated tasks. The games were moderately easy. The collectibles were abundant and easy to find. A truly relaxing casual game. June 11, 2014
Shiver Me Timbers an OK Game! I actually found this game engaging enough to like it! Rehashed story about evil entities trying to keep people from getting their treasure but done nicely. Graphics are colorful but the characters could use some updating. They are one dimensional without lip sync or movement. HOG'S are the usual messy junk pile with some interaction & the min games are nice but nothing special. Hint Button/Skip Button each take 60 seconds which is WAY TOO LONG too recharge. The collectibles are easy to find & if you click on the Hint button before you leave the scene and have missed any, it actually shows you where they are. Nice feature to have. I didn't use the map so can't comment. I liked the gypsy & her helpful?? tarot cards & as always LOVED the cat that snarls, hisses & shows teeth when touched. Ah, play nice kitty as I am getting you some milk!! All in all a nice but NOT great little game to while away some hours. Give the demo a try. June 11, 2014
Disappearances into darkness Somehow I expected more of this game. Dark forces are in action and this detective [me] has been called to investigate. The storyline is good, scary moments are in multitudes and once I finished the game I will know why Middleport has been set under such curse. But, the smallness of pictures/items is disappointing and I don't particular like that I have to prompt a person to continue conversation with my mouse. Still , worth for quiet evening enjoyment.
