Highly enjoyable noir adventure A noirish detective story set in the world of Oz. A game with a premise like had better be good because I'm going to approach it with high expectations. Luckily Emerald City Confidential is a great game, and did not dissapoint me in the least. The story appealed to me right from the start. The best thing about the game is probably the characters, who are anything but bland with well developed personalities that suit the noirish nature of the game. It was interesting to see the characters from the well known story with completely different personalities from what I am used to. The graphics, music and voice acting are all very good and serve to give the game a uniqe atmosphere of cartoonish noir which I found very appealing. The only downside for an experienced player like myself was that the game just wasn't very challenging. In fact it hardly offered any resistance at all until very close to the end. However, for a game like this that is story driven and entertaining enough to be highly replayable that isn't a major problem. It also makes the game an ideal choice for less experienced players. In conclusion I found this to be a very enjoyable game that I would recommend to everyone who likes adventure games as well as anyone who is interested in giving the genre a try since this game would serve as an excellent introduction to the genre. Awesome Noirish Oz Game I originally tried the free one-hour trial version of this Noirish game about a year ago, when, oddly enough, my college's Homecoming theme was a combo of "The Wizard of Oz," "Wicked," and "The Wiz." I loved how the main character, the hard-nosed detective, was actually a woman instead of the traditional man. The plot was a very interesting take on the "Oz" books. February 1, 2012
Came Back Way Later I came back for a few reasons. One, like another reviewer said, was to see if there has ever been a sequel made. I'd be quite disappointed if that never happens. Another reason I came back after at least...i'd say close to 2 years from when I played is this: I read a review on one site - I thought it was Big Fish but apparently not, because that review is not here! Thank Goodness. And the person gave the game a poor rating for one of the worst reasons I've ever seen a game get a bad rating! LOL!!! She said that ECC had "hateful characters". SMH...... I dunno. So everytime I'd see this game in the list of all games, I'd think of that & also wonder about the sequel. Note: this game does not have hateful characters. Jeesh. What it Does have is something so good that its got me coming back to check for a sequel 2 years (I think) after I played it! February 8, 2012
Twist Ending, Great Characters Enjoyed this immensely. I've read ALL the Oz books and it was a treat to revisit some of the characters I haven't thought of in years. The dialogue was wonderful and witty and the voice acting superb. A game made by clever minds and talented artists! My only regret is that I didn't notice until 3/4 of the way through the game that I could have increased the "walking speed" of Petra and thus saved time watching as she crossed from one side of the screen to the other. Aside from that, a thoroughly enjoyable experience and highly recommended. July 13, 2012
Is there emerald city confidential 2? I'm always checking out Bigfish games only to find if there is already a 2nd part installment of this game. It's a short game but it's worth every cent. Would love to recommend it to casual gamers like me =) December 19, 2011
Great interactive comic/novel pure adventure game (no puzzles!) It has been well over a year since I've come across an old gem here at big fish and thankfully found this game. How to describe it? Think wizard of oz meets nick chase meets avenue flo and it's put into a comic strip in which you can interact and you get the idea. It's obviously dialogue heavy but you can click to get through it faster - you get "choices" of how to respond but after replaying it and picking different choices it doesn't make a difference only to you playing it and how you would want to respond. The story is that you play as Petra a bit hardened, cynical private detective in the land of Oz. but this isn't the land of Oz that you might think! Whoever came up with the details of the characters (tin man and oil!) and areas is pure brilliant as it was witty, funny and clever. You have 50 quests in the game and hidden buttons to collect throughout and there are medals/ achievements. I had a glitch when I replayed the game and all my medals disappeared at the end. The buttons are actually three different coloured sparkle in some scenes (so are easy to see and I wish somehow it could have been buttons you were looking for) you can change it into concept art in the game in a store but you don't have to as it gets auto changed for you later in the game. At the beginning it was very straightforward hence the 3/5 for hardness, the middle to the end was more medium hardness and at the very end scenes you had to try a few things but as the inventory was limited you aren't lost. New locations open up when you unlock them through conversation triggers so it's very obvious where to go and explore next. Later in the game just keep talking to people exhausting all dialogue and if you concentrate on it, it will give you clues as to who you have to speak to next. Under options you can speed up how quickly people walk, thus speeding up the game, you also have a journal. I will say that the one weak point in the game - as often you did exhaust the dialogue but it didn't go away under the choices of dialogue so it kept repeating needless dialogue. if they removed ALL the choices after you heard it the first time or put it in a different colour to show you had listened to it that would have been better. The part at the university with the knowledge machine was also slow. Also I would have loved if you could also manual save in places as I had to replay the game to get all the medals and in the end got a technical hitch! Time was about 4hrs, if you speed up a lot of dialogue it probably will take 3hrs. If you don't mind a lot of dialogue, want an easier (not very easy just easier) adventure game with no puzzles, don't mind banner pop ups of the quests then I recommend this game to you. I really loved it, something quirky, different and quality - bravo playfirst. Here's hoping for a sequel. February 1, 2013
BEST.GAME.EVER! I've been playign this game since 2009, and it's still manages to amaze me. The story's awesome, the music is great and and is really fun! There's only one thing missing...A SEQUEL! April 28, 2012
Great fun! This game had it all -- visually stunning, interesting story, and great casual gameplay. I would love to find more games in this vein. March 17, 2012
Felt like I was in Oz! Gritty, Witty, and very fun. I hardly noticed the time passing while I played this. Felt like a real a made-up land. Loved the portrayal of the characters! The dialogue is amazing, not like most poor voice-overs, and has good timing. I was thoroughly amused! May 5, 2012
Obscure but good game I found this by searching through the forums and I really enjoyed it. Like the other reviewers I'd love to see a sequel. The graphics are refreshingly different and I loved the interactive characters. February 15, 2012
