Dark Realm: Princess of Ice Collector's Edition 4.5 5 77 77
A Bear Bearing Bad News A talking bear awakes you from your sleep, no you're not dreaming, this bear is real, and he insists you travel to the icy kingdom of Nypha to free the princess. The fate of the icy kingdom is somehow affecting your kingdom so time is of the essence, but getting there will be no easy task. It would seem that everyone is trying to stop you from completing this unbearable quest, but the bear has given you some unique powers to help you battle unforeseen enemies! Now that you share a bond with this magnificent beast, you have the unique ability to recognize magical Arcane objects and use them to your advantage, once you play a Match 3 game that is. Whenever you find a new arcane item, you will need to play a click and drag type of Match 3, you have limited moves to gather the correct resource tiles, each new item will have a slightly more difficult Match 3 game. There are 44 Collectible Hidden Crowns, 15 Achievements to earn, and many of the inventory items are Complex Items requiring some type of interaction before they can be used. The Hidden Object Puzzles all have a Morphing Object somewhere in the scene, and the icon will light up when you have collected the morph. Some HOP's require you to find medallions to uncover the interactive list finds, some require key words to be matched in a scene that are given one sentence at a time as a story about the early years in the kingdom of Nypha, and finding items that are out of place and returning them to the correct place in the scene. The Mini Games aren't bad, but nothing new really. Some of the games within the demo are, guiding a snowmobile through a path using directional arrows to avoid obstacles, turning disk rings to line up slots, and making moves by clicking on a ball when it is in the green zone. My favorite was the fight scene, you have to choose the correct symbol shown to you by three guards, one at a time, if you don't find it quickly enough or you choose the incorrect symbol you lose, and visa versa. This Collector's Edition has 44 Collectible Crowns, 19 Morphing Items (within the HOP's) 15 Achievements, 19 replayable HOP's, 9 Music Soundtracks, 27 Characters, the Making Of, 16 Wallpapers, a Jigsaw Puzzle, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, go get your game on, enjoy! PERFECT IN EVERY WAY REVIEW OF COMPLETED GAME, BONUS and EXTRAS What a fab game with lots to do. There is: * Voiceovers (with dialogue); * Frost, Snowfall, Blizzard and Custom modes of play; * 15 Achievements (3 in each achievement); * Find 44 crown symbols. As is the norm, the graphics are just superb - very colourful but crisp and easy on the eye. Sound is very good and the music is exceptional. As with all Mad Head games, I had the volume turned up with very loud, even with the chanting (I wonder what the neighbours were thinking!). There were a range of hidden object games - interactive straightforward, silhouette and items to find. Some of them were quite challenging, but not frustrating. Please keep an eye out for the morphing object in each HOS as they can be a bit elusive. If you forget about them, don't worry because you can replay all the HOS in the Extras to earn any additional achievements. The mini-games were fun and there are plenty of them. I didn't find any that were too challenging, but a few had me going for a while. I enjoyed them. I didn't use the interactive map at all because you are only going a couple of paces forwards or backwards, so there was no need to use it. All up the game, bonus and extras took me about 8 hours. Honestly, I could have gone 8 more. This time I got about 70% or so of the achievements. So I'll go back into the Extras and replay some of the HOS to up it a bit. I've never struck 100% with Mad Head games yet! So overall, definitely worth your money in buying this game. There is plenty to keep you busy, great graphics and music and a terrific storyline. What more could we want. Happy playing fishies. August 20, 2015
?BEARLY? CONTAINING MY ENTHUSIASM TO GET MY ?CLAWS? INTO THIS FANTASTIC GAME 5 CHAPTERS PLUS A BONUS CHAPTER - BASED ON DEMO PLUS COMPLETE CHAPTER 2 Continuing with ?Princess Week? at BFG, we are off to aid a fellow princess in need. Watch temperatures drop in both your kingdom and a neighboring one, where a princess is trapped in an icy tower. You, as a spunky queen, will battle your way to save this princess and your own kingdom from an evil force. I LOVE THIS GAME. YOU WILL BE IN THE BATTLE OF YOUR LIFE MANEUVERINGI THROUGH THIS GAME! This game has a good storyline, a good pace (plenty of activities and battles), some decent HOP scenes, and puzzles. I especially thought the manual dexterity puzzles such as navigating a sled and marble popper game very creative. The graphics and ?muzac? are realistic and reminiscent of merry Olde England. You get some assistance from a bear who has given you a ?bear claw,? which, when combined with other items you pick up in the game, gives you power to fight your enemies. As you play this game you will imbibe an element of humor from the characters which adds a touch of comic relief. Battling your way through this game, you will meet a host of obstacles, including some monsters to thwart your progress in getting to the princess. This game will keep you guessing as to who the true force of evil is. Later in the game you will need to go through a maze as well. So exciting! PUZZLES: There are more puzzles than HOP scenes and most are easy. Most of the puzzles are variations of matching puzzles; however, there are a few manual dexterity puzzles using some eye-hand coordination skills. Some of the puzzles are timed. You receive a ?bear claw? which you must use in combination with other items you find the game. You must play a variation of a Match 3 game to infuse it with power. After the demo is a marble popper puzzle and spot the difference puzzle. You will also find yourself ?a-maze-d? as you tackle an ?amazing? one in this game. HOP SCENES: There are 19 HOP scenes are few and they include lists of items, silhouettes, sentences with items in BOLD letters in fairy tale sequences, and a few mini-HOP scenes. Some of the HOP scenes are multi-step scenes as well ? one of which includes a puzzle. LEVELS: Frost, Snowfall, Blizzard, Custom Hints and Skips - 15 to 90 seconds INVENTORY: Interactive and puzzle-like GRAPHICS: Beautifully done - realistic graphics which are indicative of the Middle Ages or a Fairy Tale kingdom. EXTRAS: Map - Map is provided as you play the game Claw and items you receive throughout the game which are combined to fight evil 15 Achievements -14 plus an extra achievement for getting all of the 14 achievements 19 Morphing objects Collect 44 crown symbols Strategy guide - 47 pages Wallpapers and ability to replay HOP scenes and puzzles. Exceptional game! Hello friends! Well, we have a new addition to this series...yep, got the first one. This game has beautiful colors, very clear and clean. Graphics are superb, game play is excellent and animation and voice overs are extremely well done. Get the picture? I loved the music, which moved with whatever was happening at the time. Believe me, I never say that about music! Sound FX are constant and extremely well done, e.g., wind sounded so real. You can click through the dialog if you read faster than they speak. There are a lot of achievements, but none that are too difficult to accomplish. HOPs are interactive lists, silhouettes and parts. They are very clean and clear and items are not difficult to find. There are not a lot of HOPs, but you get so engrossed in the game that you don't really notice. Puzzles are not difficult, although I did find one that made me stop and think before I did anything. There are various types of puzzles, so you don't notice that there are a lot. This game flows extremely well. SG is the standard, but I was disappointed that it did not show a bit of the collectibles, so I wasn't sure what I was looking for. I did not see that you have the transport feature in the hint, but the map is very well done, with areas clearly marked and identified and it does jump quickly. Collectibles are 44 crowns. A little hint...note that not all of them are metal or have jewels and are different sizes. They are not as easy to spot as you may think. You do have to look for them. I also see that there are morphing objects in the HOPs, but I got so engrossed in what I was doing, that I forgot to look for them. I need to go back and pick them up, if the extras allow it. Didn't even look at the extras to find out. It is so nice to have a game that immediately moves you from one area to another, without a black screen or a long frustrating lag. I beta tested this game quite some time ago and was very impressed with it. Now, please understand that I do not work for the developer, so my review is strictly my own personal take on the the demo. I rarely give a game 5 stars unless it is exceptional in every way. This game most definitely deserves them all! I was drawn in from the opening scene. The story really isn't anything new, but everything is so well done that I find the need to continue and see what happens. Not extremely challenging, but enough to keep you interested. I think all levels of players will find this one enjoyable. Yes, I am absolutely going to purchase this game. As always, try it for yourself and see what you think. We all have different tastes in games and you may not care for this one at all. Thanks for the reviews. August 16, 2015
Excellent, true CE I give very few 5 Stars as I feel they are meant for something special, and based on the demo, this one is special. This game is a true Collector's Edition where even on the easiest level, I found myself having to utilize the Guide several times so it dos keep you on your toes. The graphics are stunning with awesome characters; just the visuals of this one is a treat. HOs are varied, nothing new, but difficult enough to be a challenge. Puzzles aren't overly used and enough difficulty to make you think, but so far, nothing I couldn't conquer. The story is not totally new, saving the princess from a terrible foe and a mysterious stranger who doesn't trust you but who is also trying to save the princess. Once I completed the demo, I couldn't push the BUY button soon enough and look forward to a Saturday afternoon of gameplay. I haven't been able to find many crowns or morphing items yet, but will continue the hunt. I believe you're going to enjoy this one and I highly recommend this CE version, don't wait for the SE. August 15, 2015
Something different I haven't purchased a HOG after playing a demo for quite awhile. I have come to find most of them sort of tedious and boring. This one, though, held my interest throughout the demo, and I was eager to buy it so that I could continue playing. The puzzles are different and integrated into the game story. Although I would prefer more hidden object scenes, the two I encountered in the demo were different and one of them was particularly challenging. I don't care a lot about story lines -- this one is about the same as others -- sort of melodramatic and corny -- but I like that the found objects mostly make sense and that there are not too many scenes to traverse to use them. Well, I have to get back to playing the game now. August 17, 2015
Awesome Realm...MadHead does it again! Dark Realm: Princess of Ice CE Review based on completed game + bonus chapter + extras PROLOGUE... MadHead is rapidly moving to the forefront of the casual gaming world, outperforming other devs in overall quality, gameplay, graphics, music, and storyline. THIS is what casual gaming is supposed to be. ONCE UPON A TIME... Like her mother before her, Valera is a fire-wielder. With her medallion, one of the three ancient weapons, she saved Northpearl from the first great evil in Queen of Flames. Now, as Queen Valera, she must aid the neighboring kingdom of Nypha to conquer the second great evil before the whole world is encased in ice. Valera will also discover the true power behind these Dark Realm battles, meet the bearer of the second weapon, and help star-crossed lovers reconnect in Princess of Ice. Old friends and new are on hand to help, including Valera's childhood friend Nathaniel, the steampunk dwarf (with a new mode of travel), Myrina the wise counselor, and a wise and powerful polar bear. PLAY THE GAME Variety is the hallmark of the HO scenes, which include straight and interactive list, silhouette, multiples, patterns, rebuses, and placing items where they belong. Each scene contains a morphing object. There are several situational puzzles that repeat throughout the game. When Valera encounters an artifact, she must charge it with her bearclaw armor by completing a Match 3+ puzzle. There are two types of backstory puzzles: the find-and-return items characteristic of MadHead games, and one where you must choose which of four images matches the given image. For some of the battles, you must match symbols in a timely manner. Lastly, for some of the battles, you must draw runes with the mouse, requiring both timing and accuracy. One-off puzzles include: ? matching icons to NPCs (hope you paid attention to the story!) ? Zuma-style marble shooter ? match the patterns ? find the differences ? match pairs ? swap the tiles jigsaw ? swap the tiles to complete horizontal and vertical patterns ? memorize and repeat multiple-square grid pattern ? rotate circles to complete the image ...and many more. SIGHTSEEING... Despite being a game about ice, the graphics were not overly blue and white. Nor did garish tones abound. Instead, there were lots of richly layered neutrals with touches of saturated jewel tones, creating a pleasing and realistic balance. I could have done without the frequent dramatic bright flashes of light whenever the gameplay transitioned in or out of the backstory, and whenever Valera used her bearclaw. SOUNDBOARD... The soundtrack is stunning, worthy of a movie. There are beautiful wordless chants and operatic choirs, new age instrumentals and orchestral marches, melancholic strings and tranquil harps. One piece is reminiscent of a medieval faire, while another evokes an epic quest. Still another reminds me of an eastern European folk dance. The voiceovers couldn't be more professional, with accents ranging across the British Isles and just the right touch of drama. Extremely well done! Environmental sounds are excellent, truly immersive. TOOLBOX... A journal stores clues and narrates the storyline. The jump map shows your location, areas with available tasks, and completed areas. And the bearclaw charges ancient artifacts. OOH! PIECE OF CANDY... In the bonus chapter, discover what set the Dark Lord's puppet on the path to his evil ways. (I'm fairly sure this is a preview for the sequel.) You may replay the HO scenes either to improve your score or to retrieve morphing objects you might have missed. If you collect all the crowns, it unlocks an ultimate HO scene. (And you are allowed to go back and find the ones you missed!) Completing a jigsaw puzzles unlocks the character gallery. And there are performance achievements, the soundtrack (which is downloadable), and a "making of" video. EPILOGUE... Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable game with replay value, judging from the fact that I replayed Queen of Flames before playing this sequel. I do recommend both installments of Dark Realm in their CE versions, and I'm looking forward to part three. Happy gaming! August 23, 2015
Five stars is not enough for this GREAT game! Every aspect of this game, from storyline to graphics quality, animation and voice overs to game play and quality of HOPs was outstanding. I've enjoyed every game in this series but this one tops them all. I play w/ my husband who usually just watches and keeps me company. Time and time again in this game, however, he had to take over because the game play was so exciting and challenging he couldn't resist. Mad Head has beaten out BoomZap as my favorite developer (w/ Eipix and ERS now running neck and neck in second place...) Kudos. I recommend this game to anyone who loves a great story and a great game. This one has it all! August 16, 2015
Absolutely brilliant Another fantastic game from these devs. I buy everything from them without even sampling!! Voices - brilliant graphics - ditto gameplay = ditto music - ditto puzzles & hogs - ditto Do not even hesitate and buy... August 21, 2015
LOVE THIS ONE! based on demo ... and i purchased ... i love everything about this one ... the artwork is hi-res and beautiful ... storyline interesting ... LOVE the sliding down the mountain side ... feels like you are flying ! ... hos are pretty typical but good ... mini games different and unique but not too challenging so far ... however the ACTION between player and villians are interactive and i just enjoy the heck out of that ... AND i just love the music from mad head games ! ... GO TEAM! August 15, 2015
