Grim Tales: Threads of Destiny 2.8 5 13 13
THE FINAL DESTINATION-ONE WAY OR ANOTHER The police have finally found the remains of Jackie's parents, Natalia and Alexander Gray who have been missing for 20 years. They were victims of a notorious serial killer Greg Duffy, who hunted people as if they were animals! Jackie pleads with you to use your gift to travel to the past and stop Greg Duffy before he kills her parents, after all, they wouldn't be in that situation had they not missed the maiden flight of a luxury airliner that crashed at takeoff, killing 158 people. Does Fate have other plans for the Gray's? Were they meant to perish on that flight, was that supposed to be their final destination? Are Fate and Destiny connected by the same thread? The Gray family certainly has had their fair share of family drama, and Grim Tales does an excellent job connecting you emotionally to the characters who have become very familiar to us. You won't need any magical props on this time traveling adventure, it's just you, Aunt Gray, and a handful of people stuck in time, unable to move forward until your work is done. There are plus sign inventory items to tinker with, both in the past and the present, and the Collector's Edition has the addition of collectible Family Medallions (with family bios) several Morphing Objects, and plenty of Achievements to earn. The graphics and voiceovers are as good as they get, they just seem to get better with every new Grim Tales episode. The Hidden Object Scenes offer a mixture to please just about everyone, finding the item in green text as a story is being told, finding multiples of a single item, silhouetted shape finds and good old fashioned list finds. In my opinion, the so called hidden objects, aren't very hidden, and some of the items are large and obvious, in fact I could probably find the correct items without looking at the list! The Mini Games, however are what makes or breaks a decent game, too easy and it's boring, too difficult, and you just want to throw in the towel out of sheer frustration. Below is a list of some of the more prominent mini games, if this will SPOIL it for you, skip this section of game descriptions (NOT solutions): 1) Guide an airplane to it's destination through obstacles 2) Zoom Zone games where you identify similarities. 3) Clicking to shoot an arrow when in specific ranges. 4) Selecting directional arrows to allow a crane to pick up specific boxes (really creative) 5) Matching identical items and placing them correctly on the shelves. The Collector's Edition has 8 Concept Art pictures, 8 Wallpapers, 18 Achievements, 5 Music Soundtracks, an Archive Room, a Secret Room, 16 Family Medallion Collectibles, Morphing Objects, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy! CE or SE? Really fun, though illogical, so CE for me. Play it for yourself and decide. Sunnyglow has written a great review of the CE that gives all the details, so I will just discuss whether you should buy the CE or the SE because that is what I want to know if both are out and I have bought neither. This review is based upon playing the first two chapters of the CE, Which to buy will depend somewhat on your feelings about the game. Some people graded the CE really low because, yes, the game is definitely not logical. Just a few examples: --I thought the heroine was going back in time to find out who killed the two people, but it turns out now she is going to change the last 20 years by saving the people. --How can the people at the campfire not notice our character, who keeps returning and sneaking around their campsite, particularly after our character stole their bicycle? --I laughed when I read Closar's 1-star review for the CE, noting that it was 40 kilometers to a town you ride back and forth to, several times in one night, on that stolen bicycle. I was having so much fun I hadn't noticed. But it didn't change my 5-star rating. I have been having so much fun with the game I don't even care about how illogical it is. Plus, the game also has: ?Really great, clear art, (except for one room that is dim around the edges, but then it turns out you don?t need to see around the edges to complete the HOP in that room anyway, so yay!) ?Fun HOPs (but I am not a HOP lover, so take that into consideration. They must be REALLY good for me to like them.) ?Varied mini puzzles that are sometimes tedious and sometimes really fun. ?A good map function that allows you to jump to a scene. Without that, there would too much back and forth. The CE has all the bells and whistles according to BFG, though this is not apparent from the Extras Menu. Apparently, you can "Unlock the Secret Room to replay your favorite hidden-object puzzles and mini-games!? according to BFG?s description. Replaying great puzzles later is my favorite thing, and there are some good ones here. I bought the CE and I do not regret it. Try it and see if you agree. Or at least buy this game, the SE, because your destiny is to have fun with this one. November 6, 2015
Play the role of Aunt Gray and Save The Day!!! Save the parents of your niece Jackie who died 20 years ago in Grim Tales 9: Threads of Destiny PC Game! Alexander and Natalia Gray went missing on April 23, about 20 years ago now. They?re survived by their daughter, Jackie. The story begins at the police station where you learn that the Gray?s car was found in the woods close to town. Now only remains were found and using their personal belongings you can travel back in time and save them from the Greg Duffy, a serial killer known also as the Roadside Killer. You can save them, but what if their death is connected with their miraculous escape of death year before, when they missed the exploded plane by seconds. Maybe Duffy is connected with that catastrophe, or there?s something even more sinister? FATE played by the ghostly woman ATROPOS tries every trick in the book to stop your mission and defeating her is yet another exciting challenge. This is the 9th installment of Grim Tales series from Elephant Games, where your objective is to find and identify the murderer of the Grays traveling back in time to change life threatening events. This is a great edition to the Grim Tales Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure series. The adventure isn't very lengthy. I finished the main game and bonus chapter in less than 3 hours, usually this series offers 6-8 hours of gameplay. Never the less it is a complex murder mystery and with the addition of collection character coins you get info on all the Gray family members going all the way back to the first installment of the franchise. I will continue to purchase into this series as long as Big Fish and Elephant continue releasing them! Standard Edition vs. Collector's Edition... The Collector's Edition includes: Bonus chapter Try to unlock all the Achievements! Find all collectible coins of your ancestors! Strategy Guide! November 6, 2015
You're Destined to Be Pleased With This Game!! GRIM TALES-THREADS OF DESTINY SE This game is great and I had a lot of fun playing it. I was unsure about buying after playing the free hour-long trial, but I did and I?m glad I did. I completed the entire Collector?s Edition, including Main Story, Bonus Chapter and an additional feature included in the CE ?Extras? section. I played this game on a Mac Book Pro with Operating System 10.9.5. As usual, I played at a very slow place and probably took 8 hours to complete. I think this experience will help me suggest to you whether or not the extra money need be spent on the CE. FUN FACTOR I played Threads of Destiny in five sessions over three days and was always looking forward to getting back to it. If I weren?t having fun I?d not have subjected myself to such torture. Not only that, with only Key to Ravenhearst in between, I've returned to another Grim Tales game in this series. This alone would be a testament to just how good this game is. The cornerstone of this game and others in the series is one character?s ability to time travel and change the course of history. While it?s impossible, it?s still a good story to tell and it is told well. Both the "book" and the actors who deliver it are great. Once you?ve accepted the premise that time travel is possible, logic is applied thereafter, in spite of the fantastic nature of the story. This game is completely entertaining. VISUAL/SOUND QUALITY The artwork is very good and realistic. The "set design" is exceptional. The locus of the penultimate scene is an airport. It looks like and feels like an airport to me?a small commuter airport. The same is true of the campground scene and the police station?all of the scenes...they feel realistic. From eggs to fruit the game is great. As I mentioned before, the actors are quite good. The lip-synching is not as good, but still better than most. The sound track is very good as well. The ambient music for HOS and extra features is new-age?ish.? The soundtrack also connotes urgency, fear, etc. It does its job well. LEVEL OF CHALLENGE HOS: There are a number of different HOS styles but silhouette seems the most frequent. I worked hard to solve them because they are reasonably difficult for me. They are not a jumbled mess, but items are still well hidden and chameleon-like in their ability to ?blend in? with their environment. MINI GAMES: The mini-games range from easy to difficult with most being easily managed. Still, I think the games are creative. The most difficult to me is a calculator grid, a variety of numbers, a goal of getting the sums to equal the same amount horizontally, vertically and diagonally: no way. My mind just doesn?t work like that. You may find this one simple. WHAT'S IN THE COLLECTOR'S EDITION CE MORPHS AND COLLECTIBLES: Morphing Items: There are several morphing items, independent of HOS, but available in every location. They are tough. As sometimes happens, playing a game with no hints or sparkles, I didn?t catch on immediately that there were morphs. I missed the first one and I couldn?t get back. Once I realized they were there (because I saw the item morphing) I actively sought them out. The morphs are a good feature and their value helps justify the extra money spent on a CE. They do not interrupt game play and are well integrated into the whole story. As a particular challenge, the cursor doesn?t change to a hand when hovering over the morph item. THANK YOU. So many games employ this give-away method. It robs one of the great ?gets? of a Collector?s Edition. It renders a very expensive CE feature nothing more than a no-value key click?BUT NOT in this game it doesn?t!!! Collectibles: The collectibles are discs/cameos of members of the extended Gray family. They are more amusing than serious, not hard to find and not integral to the game. CE FINAL CHALLENGE: The final challenge in the Bonus Chapter is incomprehensible to me. I don?t know if it is challenging or not because I don?t understand the directions and how to reach the desired result. Ultimately, I ?passed? but I have no idea how. It is a card game with instructions and expected results written on each card. Playing a card gains or loses lives based on the information on the card itself and on the relationship to other cards already played (I think). I don?t know how I lucked into completing it. CE EXTRAS ?SECRET ROOM? CHALLENGE: The ?Secret Room? is part of the CE package of extras. This one is an uninteresting HOS composed of all morphing objects, several of a kind, in specific multiples, each in a location within the airport, the scene of the final chapter of the main game. It is predictable and, consequently, of zero value. Even a die-hard fan of HOG will find this a bore in my opinion. STORYLINE The storyline is great. Storylines consisting of an element of time travel are not off-putting to me. They aren?t real, but so what. I think they present a unique opportunity and challenge to make the whole story logical while still being a product completely of the imagination. In a sense, time travel games have to preserve internal logic while still being, in reality, illogical. The good ones, and Threads of Destiny is a good one, allow us to suspend logic and disbelief, in service of the game?and they do this in a way that we don?t know it?s happening?we don?t know we?re doing it, OR if we do know, it doesn?t matter! This is excellence. COLLECTOR?S EDITION *The CE Package offers all the basic ?who cares?? collection of items such as re-playable music and scenes. *In addition there are the already-mentioned morphing objects and collectibles. *Strategy Guide *There are about 15 achievements. *Finally, there is the bonus chapter itself. Though not particularly long, it is fun and it extends the length of the game. TO CE OR SE I think the bonus chapter gives a real conclusion to the story. However, the main story stands quite nicely on its own without the extra playtime. The morphing objects are very well done and if you want an additional challenge then this, along with the strategy guide are the only ?must? reasons to buy the CE. As I?ve already written, the collectibles are not essential. The achievements are certainly not essential: you know what you?ve done and not done and unless you announce your accomplishment, no one else will know. There?s a big difference in cost (potentially using a coupon to get this game for free) versus spending up to $13.99 or even $19.99 if you?re not a club member. There?s a great value in the SE at a discounted price (or free). There's also a value in the CE. I think it's well worth the money. In the end, make your decision based on how much money you want to spend. If you're waiting for the right game with a good bonus chapter and you like morphs and will use the strategy guide, by all means get the CE. If these are not features you seek, definitely get the SE. YOU WILL BE VERY HAPPY WITH THE DECISION YOU MAKE. JUST MAKE SURE YOU GET THIS GAME. November 6, 2015
CAN YOU CHANGE DESTINY? Okay, I admit that I have a huge fear of flying and when the game begins with a plane exploding in mid-air I cringed and knew that I would have to leave my fear at the door as I stepped into this game. However, it seems that Jackie?s parents missed that flight only to meet their Destiny in another way. We once again play the game as Aunt Gray who has a special gift of being to go back into the past and see the actual events as they unfold. Will you be able to change the destiny of Alexander and Natalia Gray and thwart fate? What actually happens if we go back in time and change events? I know that I am going to be totally immersed in this new Grim Tales as I explore that concept and see how it all plays out. Everything about the game is top notch with graphics and a sound package that bring the game to life. The game offers four modes of gameplay ? Casual, Advanced, Hardcore, and Custom. If you choose the custom mode that is always my option when offered, you can fiddle with the settings so that you can play the way you like. In custom mode you can set the hints and puzzle skips to recharge in a range of 15 to 90 seconds. Our tools include an interactive map that we find early in the game. I didn?t any any gimmicky tools and that was certainly a relief. Of course being a HOPA game we have HOP scenes that include a variety of styles. The puzzles are typical and not overly difficult so there is not a lot to say. I happen to love puzzles in a game and fortunately, at least early in the game it appears that there are more puzzles than HOPS. The puzzles do range in difficulty with some being a bit more challenging than others but I haven?t found any that were real stinkers to solve. I purchased the CE version of the game and as I began playing I saw a theme developing. It seemed as if the game was the same one that came out just the week before with a different title and from a different dev. Although I liked the game, I soon became bored by having to go from time to a different time to undo the past and put things right with the family. In the end the game became redundant and boring. I am sure that many of you who like the Grim Tales series will thoroughly enjoy the game and its quality. As for me, I couldn?t play the bonus game because I was so over it by the time I reached the end. I think a different storyline or should go into the next Grim Tales or perhaps it is time to retire the series. Although, the game didn?t live up to my expectations, as always, I recommend that you at least try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy. November 6, 2015
Kind of short.... That's it..short review for a short game. November 19, 2015
Fate Wins in My Book Your niece Jackie?s parents, Alexander and Natalia Gray, avoiding a fatal plane crash, are subsequently murdered by a serial killer and their remains turn up 20 years later. Your niece asks you to use your special talent and go back in time and save them. Back in the past, as you struggle to save Jackie's parents, you encounter ?Fate? who tells you to back off this time. Why? Game logic is in the toilet ? victim?s purse in killer?s truck before the murders, truck switch in townie child?s costume bag, police cruiser emblem in victims bag in killers truck, etc. (At one point Aunt Gray wonders why Fate has not stepped in before as she traveled into the past to change the family's varied stories. So do I.) Good stuff: Artwork and voice work is well done. Bad stuff: The story is all over the place - literally. Auntie runs from Point A to B, back to A, to C, then D, then back to B, A, D, C, etc. The puzzle pieces are in totally off-the-wall places and belong in even stranger places. I found little to challenge me other than the lack of logic and cohesion. The HOPs were childish, puzzles simple. At the end of the trial I wanted to yield everything to Fate. This time I want to weep that one of my favorite game series has been treated so roughly. Please try before you buy. You'll know what you are getting into then. November 6, 2015
Disappointing I have played the whole series up to date and was really excited to download and play the latest GrimTales. I was so disappointed I didn't even complete the game. I didn't like the story line, the puzzles were boring with too much tooing and froing all over the place I became bored like I said previously decided not to complete the game. I would not recommend sorry :( November 8, 2015
Loved the graphics and story potential, execution - not so much I wish I had much better things to say about this game, but unfortunately - it wasn't my cup of tea. "Grim Tales: Threads of Destiny" has beautiful graphics and atmospheric music that immersed me and a story potential that intrigued me when I played through the initial trial. But unfortunately, playing the full version never measured up for quality. There's quite a bit of back and forth with the tasks you have to do, perhaps a bit too much without payoff for the challenge in the context of the game. The storyline felt extremely underwhelming as there's the potential for fighting against Fate, but there's never a point where that battle comes to a climax and the ending felt too open-ended after all of the back and forth of the puzzles it had you go through. My favorite part of the storyline was the first part where you're putting the pieces together with respect to the potential serial killer on the loose, but everything after that seemed to be odd circumstances that were never developed or explained. Overall, I think the potential this game had didn't really match up to its execution. It's one of those games where you wouldn't really replay it because there's not enough to bring you back to it, despite a decent atmosphere. December 12, 2015
Disappointing for a Grim Tales fan I am a huge fan of the Grim Tales series. Usually I find the games original and the areas fun to explore. In this case it just felt to me to be composed of 3 small games pieced together, in mostly uninteresting zones. I kept waiting for it to 'feel' like the other Grim Tales, then suddenly it was over. And it was a very short game. The storyline was great, but imo the content fell short. November 15, 2015
