Haunted Legends: The Iron Mask Collector's Edition 4.1 5 34 34
PRISONER NUMBER 64389 Seventeenth Century France was a brutal era, especially for those who have been imprisoned in Bastilles. This episode of Haunted Legends centers around one such prisoner, a man who has been stripped of his former identity, his face hidden behind an iron mask, doomed to spend eternity, rotting in prison, and branded with his new identity prisoner number 64389! It's as if he never existed! When the cardinal receives a death threat, you are called in to investigate as a member of the royal Secret Service under his majesty, King Louis XIV. All roads seem to lead to the man in the iron mask, and it becomes abundantly clear that his true identity is being withheld, but why? Who is this man in the iron mask? More importantly, who was this man who was locked inside the iron mask? I must admit, Haunted Legends has upped their game lately with a second spectacular game. That creepy evil little dwarf with a short temper has returned to make your job even more difficult as he tries to sabotage your every move, but it wouldn't be a Haunted Legend without him! At the beginning of the game you will come across a very important book from Catherine de Medias library. This book has been handed down from the cardinal's to their predecessors for over 200 years, and contains secret and dreadful knowledge. Unfortunately, the books 12 seals have been lost over the years, but as the best agent the SS has, you will surely find all 12 seals throughout your investigation and discover all the horrible details written within it's pages. You will also collect Gold and Silver Horseshoes in each scene that can be used to purchase stable items and tack supplies for your trusty steed. The Hidden Object Scenes have some pretty well hidden objects, and offer a variety of different types. There are scenes requiring you to find matching Pairs of items, Silhouetted Shape Fragments in multiples, and even Silhouetted Shape finds that require you to first find the object that matches the silhouetted shape and then place that item back into the scene where it logically belongs. The only feature I don't like in this series is that many of the scenes are repeated a second time. The Mini Games are actually impressive, some are even available in Casual or Hard modes, another typical feature this series offers. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo: 1) Press Roman numerals in sequential order. 2) Click owls to bring them all to the center, clicking on one owl may affect others. 3) Swap Chess pieces to match the images on the etched glass. 4) Sort keys and then place them on the correct hooks. 5) Drag the dot through a path without going outside of the lines. 6) Place letters in a pile from most recent to oldest and match the letters to the corresponding daggers before moving them to the pile. 7) Assemble the musketeer and guardian images using the center button to move tiles between them. 8) Complete the emblem by rotating the lock elements, a single button can rotate multiple pieces. 9) Assemble torn letter fragments. 10) Forge the cardinal's signature by using a quill to connect the dots in the correct sequence. This Collector's Edition has replayable Mini Games and Hidden Object Scenes, 7 replayable Movie clips, 3 Music Soundtracks, Achievements, Wallpapers, 6 Screensavers, Collectible Horseshoes, 12 Collectible Book emblems, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy! HAVE A SWASHBUCKLING GOOD TIME WHILE SOLVING THE MYSTERY OF THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK In this terrific new Haunted Legends game travel back to 17th century France and come face-to-face with those swashbuckling Musketeers and a host of other characters in the court of Louis XIV. You play the game as an agent of the secret service whom the Cardinal Richelieu has personally called upon to solve the recent murders where the victims all received the same letter accusing them of treason against the King and France. The Cardinal recently received the same letter and now that he is personally a target, it is more important than ever that the ?Man in the Iron Mask? is apprehended. What would a Haunted Legends game be without that signature mischievous little dwarf? Yes he is back and after a recent game that told his story, I have a bit more tolerance for his antics and troublemaking. The question is why is he so involved in chasing down the murderer? You can bet that Vox will be causing trouble and trying to thwart you at every turn. For good measure, throw in the attitudinal cat that is showing up in many recent games from this developer and we have a winner. Although I am not a ?cat? person I can?t help but love this imperious and scruffy cat when he shows up in a game. I am not going to detail all the HOPs and mini-games since most of them are fairly much the same as those we normally see in this type of game. I will comment that in this particular game they are excellent and well-designed. The mini-games have a bit more challenge than usual and even if they are not over-the-top difficult, I found them a lot of fun. Both the mini-games and HOPs fit well with the storyline and made the game better with all that I encountered in my adventure. IMHO, the CE version of the game offers a decent extras package and it is one that might just entice you to spring for the CE rather than wait for the SE to be released. There are collectibles, achievements, a bonus chapter, strategy guide, replay of HOPs and mini-games, concept art, movies, music, concept art and wallpapers. Haunted Legends Man in the Iron Mask is, at least for me, one of the best in the series. I have always loved the Haunted Legends games and even that little troublesome dwarf doesn?t keep me away from adding each new game in the series to my collection. This game has an engrossing storyline and I was so intrigued by the tangled web that I just had to keep going and find out what ultimately happens to solve the mystery of that ?masked man.? The game has those excellent hand-drawn graphics that make this developer?s games memorable. The bunny team has always been at the top of my list for developers who provide top-notch games and I am happy to see that they are beginning to take a step up to what once made them the premier developer of casual games. You probably already have guessed that I love this game but, as always, please try the demo to see if it is a game you will enjoy as well. June 30, 2016
I liked it! Really nice game. I'll let the other reviewers give the details, I will just say it was an interesting, nice long game which wasn't too easy but not super frustrating either. Lot's to do and a pretty cool map system. Decent story and just a lot of decent games, puzzles and HOPS. I thought it was a nice job overall. Thank you! I definitely recommend you play the demo and decide for yourself. Happy gamin! July 1, 2016
?ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL? IN THE COURT OF THE SUN KING 6 CHAPTERS PLUS A BONUS CHAPTER ? REVIEW BASED ON THE DEMO PLUS PART OF CHAPTER 3 OVERVIEW: Return to 1653 France during the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King, in this beautifully crafted 5-star game of mystery and political intrigue. Be warned ? THIS IS A LONG GAME! The graphics are exquisite as usual for this developer, providing a somewhat realistic graphic depiction of this period in France. The game script is well written, keeping you in suspense trying to make the connections between the characters in solving the identity of a man in an iron mask committing the murders. The pace is excellent and I was engaged throughout the demo. There are more puzzles than HOP scenes in the game; however, both are well-crafted. Vox, the grunting dwarf, is back in this game, and to me, seems out-of-place in this period piece. However, his character is well-integrated into the spider?s web of court politics and intrigue of this game. The collectibles are horseshoes which are used to purchase items for your horse and seals to unlock a book from the De? Medici family from Florence, Italy. You have the ability to replay the HOP scenes and the puzzles. WARNING: Be prepared for a ?sneaky snake? moment in the demo! AFTER THE DEMO YOU ARE ACCOMPANIED BY A "DOG" FOR TWO CHAPTERS WHO BARKS AND WHINES INCESSANTLY; HOWEVER, YOU CAN SKIP THE SCENES! STORY: Loosely based on two class novels by Dumas, ?The Man in the Iron Mask? and ?The Three Musketeers,? you play an agent from the French secret service looking into the murders of the members of the French court by a man in an iron mask. You, as the agent will be searching for clues concerning this man who seems to be a prisoner residing in Bastille. However, how can that be possible? There are quite a few entanglements in this game between several characters. Somehow the dwarf, Vox is behind this and seems to be thwarting your efforts to locate the killer. He seems interested in the prisoner as well. It seems this mysterious prisoner is being treated royally, being supplied with the best food, wine and clothing. But why? Besides Vox, the Cardinal (RIchlieux?) and the King himself are embroiled in this game of mystery and suspense. HOP SCENES: They vary in style. They are interactive as well. In the demo they include a mini-HOP scene involving some catnip for the ERS ?cat with in attitude,? a matching scene using chess pieces, and two silhouette scenes using the same scene twice. The silhouette scenes are interactive and puzzle-like and very well crafted. PUZZLES: In the demo there are more puzzles than HOP scenes, and they range in variety and difficulty. I did encounter two switch puzzles which I thought were a little difficult and time consuming. Unlike in previous games from this developer, there are mini-puzzles within the inventory which are also well-crafted. The puzzles from the inventory are matching puzzles ? matching up keys and matching up positions of levers to open a lock. There is also a nifty little assembly puzzle involving a wheel for a cart and a sequence puzzle involving four owls to open up a case. The standard puzzles within the game include a manual dexterity puzzle which includes tracing a symbol, a sequence puzzle putting letters in chronological order from various characters in the game, a couple of switch puzzles (which are somewhat difficult), an easy jigsaw puzzle using pieces of a letter. There is also a clever, well-designed dot-to-dot puzzle involving a signature which we seldom seen in HOP games. FAVORITE PUZZLE: The two switch puzzles are my favorites. In one you must switch picture pieces from one scene to another to recreate two pictures. You accomplish this with the help of a button in the middle of the scene to switch the pieces. The other switch puzzle I found somewhat difficult as you must switch segments of a lock to recreate an emblem surrounding the lock. There are several buttons which switch the pieces of the lock and it took me time to figure out the sequence to restore the image. AFTER THE DEMO: There is another HOP scene and a slightly wicked manual dexterity puzzle involving throwing apples, a sliding tiles puzzles which allows you to choose between casual and hard settings, a maze puzzle, a switch puzzle, and a matching puzzle. LEVELS: Casual, Advanced, Hard, Custom Hints and Skips ? 5 to 200 seconds EXTRAS: Map is given to you at the start of the game 12 Achievements Collect horse shoes to purchase items for your horse. Woooah! An Epoch ERS! This game has my vote for the game of the year. It satisfies my HOPA loves down to my toes. Not only HOS, but the whole game is spent looking for things directly needed in the game, and adventuring round from the palaces of Louis XIV, and posh receptions halls, to the filth encrusted streets of 17th century Paris, which includes the Bastille. There were a decent number of puzzles, but they are not the focus of the game; the story and the characters take center stage, which I really appreciated. There were a few that were sort of mindless puzzles (like jigsaws with multiple tiny squares you had to switch round to make into a picture) which I will enjoy more when I replay the game. And replay ability is one of this games' strong suits! (Speaking of strong suits, a little more than 1/2 way through the game, they changed gears with the puzzles, and led you on a trek through Paris, having to solve puzzles along the way to get to your destination. It was a refreshing change of pace and kept it from getting stale...) And I will be playing again. There is so much here. One of the most brilliant things they did was not to immediately close you out of a scene once you had finished the task; They allow you time to look around and see all the details, which were fascinating and sometimes funny; I noticed a couple of "Easter Egg" type things, and a few made me laugh out loud. Won't spoil it for you though. The history seems pretty accurate, although it has been many years since my college history classes; Cardinal Richelieu, (aka Armand Jean du Plessis) is not named, but the character of the Kings right hand man is him to a T, red cardinal robes and all. I especially liked the snarling mean cat he kept as a pet, and the many small snarling black cats throughout the city, constantly watching you. A neat way of showing the power du Plessis wielded. There is also a Musketeer who is your occasional ally. The incidental characters were few but well drawn, like the sarcastic hardened Pub keeper, and the shrewd but overworked manager of the Bastille. One of the most important people to reappear is our old friend St. Germaine, a wickedly funny anti hero. While abhorring his morals, one sympathizes with his plight. This game took me a couple of days to complete; I took my time and had a ball. Now I'm going to turn around and replay it from the beginning, to get the few horseshoes I missed, and to see what else I might have not noticed. One thing I did notice, is that the art work was rougher, not so polished as in other ERS games. But this gave the game a more authentic feel. Life was messy and harsh during those "best of times and worst of times" in France, before the Revolution. Very well done, ERS! HOPA's forever. (For new Fishies, HOPA is Hidden Object and Adventure game combined) July 8, 2016
There Goes That Mean Worrisome Little Man Again! Judging from the Demo, this is another awesome game. The visual/sound and overall quality of the game is great. Every time I see one of these games with that mean worrisome little man, I am confident of a Good Game. I am so reminded of the story legend of the Man in the Iron Mask and the Three Musketeer story line. I like how the hints loads quickly, map explanation and navigation. The action scenes are awesome. I will definitely purchase this CE game ASAP. Hidden Object game lovers will thoroughly enjoy this game for sure. June 30, 2016
Double Masked I love the story of The Mask be it book or movie. This game made it interesting and I Had hoped that the man in the mask was actually a good guy, but 2 of them. I need to own this game and find out what that evil little dwarf character has to do with all this. Nice jump map, good game flow, Critter Action, collect horse shoes, easy breezy puzzles, Great Characters, Nice flow with a good story line. Need to own the game. Almost want to put it on the tender for game award, but think they missed it by a squeak. Nice little touches throughout the game. Watch out for that snake. Wheres that Cat when you need him. July 5, 2016
Back on Track So pleased to see ERS back on their top game. This game has all the challenge you could ask for without being too difficult. The story keeps you guessing. Collectables allow you to take good care of a lovely horse. The map could be a teeny bit more helpful but thats a small quibble in an overall quality game. July 1, 2016
fantastic game! I like history so bought the game without trying. The plot remember the intrigues - Caterina de' Medici, Mazzarino, etc. during the reign of Luis XIV. The game is well structured, long enough every amusing. July 11, 2016
SAINT GERMAIN IS BACK IN THIS ADAPTATION OF IRON MASK! Wow! This is the 8th edition of Haunted Legends and ERS had made one Exceptional, Riveting, and Sensational Mystery Thriller. The Man in the Iron Mask is a great story and you play the role of an investigator for the secret service. The cruel King Louis XIV of France has a secret twin brother who he keeps imprisoned. Can the twin be substituted for the real king? You must find Count Philip and free him but there is a twist in this adaptation. The impudent little Saint Germain is out to thwart your investigation. It wouldn't be Haunted Legends without this essential character! Then there is the Secret book of knowledge you come across in the beginning inside Catherine de Medias library. Find all 12 seals and place them on the jacket of the book to reveal to reveal it's shocking details. The developers have really put an award winning amount of effort in recreating this epic adventure. I loved Leonardo DiCaprio in The Man in the Iron Mask movie too. This is also a return to a longer playing game (4 hours for me) plus the bonus game. I loved everything about this game and I'm such of fan of this popular series. I am glad it is still trending with fans and new players are bound to play earlier editions once they play this one. Thanks BigFish for another excellent Editors Choice adventure. July 4, 2016
