Enigmatis 3: The Shadow of Karkhala Collector's Edition 4.2 5 46 46
HE'S BACK I remember waking up in the tiny town of Maple Creek dazed and confused. The entire town had been torn to shreds by a violent tornado, and my memories were fuzzy. Slowly I began to remember why I was sent to Vermont in the first place, to investigate the disappearance of a young teenage girl. What I found was unfathomable, I had found the bodies of several missing persons dating back over 80 years! The person responsible for these atrocious murders was even harder to imagine, a Preacher! The Preacher's history is one of evil, who'll stop at nothing as he prepares to become the unholy vessel and resurrect the ancient demon, Asmodai. It sickens me that the Preacher managed to escape. Nearly a year later, I encountered the Preacher near the Redwood Forest in Northern California. I have learned so much about Asmodai who was slain by Raphael during the great battle. Asmodai's followers, called Reapers followed him into immortal oblivion. Raphael ordered all Reapers to be killed using a ceremonial dagger, and their numbers dwindled from 12 strong to a mere 2 The Preacher is one of those Reapers, but unfortunately, once more the Preacher managed to escape! After returning to Maple Creek, I have found new evidence about the Preacher's nefarious plans which has led myself and detective Richard Hamilton to an ancient monastery, nestled high in the mountains of Tibet. The Preacher is now the last of the Reapers and is prepared to resurrect his unholiness, Asmodai! There is no room for error now, the ceremony must not take place, the Preacher must die for the world to live! The Shadows of Karkhala is my least favorite in the Enigmatis series, partially because of the location, but mostly because the game lost that eerie vibe that it's predecessors had. The graphics are good, but again, it's too bright and cheery for the plot. Your evidence is now kept on your smartphone, which is a vast improvement from the hotel wall right? This is the game that made the evidence board famous, where pieces of evidence, notes and clues are kept and sorted out to draw conclusions on the ongoing case. This Collector's Edition has 15 hidden White Feathers, hidden Widow's Sorrow Flowers, and my favorite feature, Morphing Stains of Evil, tainted reality souls, the corrupted souls and their foul deeds! There are also several Achievement categories available. The Hidden Object Scenes are decent although they are far and few between. There are Listed item finds, and matching pair finds, I haven't yet finished this game so I'll add what I find after the demo to the Standard Edition review when it's released. The Mini Games, however are in abundance, the following are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo: 1) Place the rungs in the proper sockets to climb the pole following the pattern. 2) Move the dagger along the pathways so it passes through every hub once. 3) Click disks to create an image. 4) Narrow down evidence and locations from clues. 5) Find the landmarks listed in the notes and draw a circle around them. Each circles radius should equal the distance given in the note using a compass. 6) Click on the tree trunk to balance the pole left or right. 7) Arrange the books using the photo as reference details, then push books in the right order. 8) Pair the symbols from the dictionary with those in the chronicle to translate it. 9) Follow directions on a map to choose the correct path. This Collector's Edition has replayable Pair Matching games, collectible Widow's Sorrow Flowers and White Feathers, Morphing Objects, 8 Cutscenes, 9 replayable Hidden Object Scenes, 6 replayable Puzzles, 5 Music Soundtracks, 14 Wallpapers, 12 Concept Art pictures, several Achievement categories, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy! WOW!!!!! What an exciting start. This game starts with an exciting and rousing scramble in the plane. You are trying to perform essential tasks while bouncing around in a storm and trying to stay in the plane. Actually I only played part of the trial. Why? Because I knew I was going to purchase it from the start. This looks like hours of great fun. The graphics are wonderful and I liked the sound enormously. I used my earphones to get the full effect, something I rarely do. Also liked the "turn around arrows" in the beginning when you are back and forth in the plane. A little different approach. I definitely recommend this game. July 24, 2016
CRASH LAND INTO A 5-STAR PLUS ACTION PACKED ADVENTURE! PURE SHANGRI-LA! 6 CHAPTERS PLUS A BONUS CHAPTER ? REVIEW BASED ON THE DEMO PLUS PART OF CHAPTER 3 OVERVIEW: Pack your parachute and fuel up your plane and get ready for an action packed adventure in the third and final episode of the ?Enigmatis? series. To me this is a LONG 5-star plus game which is more of an adventure game than a HOP game. Set in a monastery in the Himalayas of Tibet, this game is just pure pleasure to play - developed by one of the best game designers in the business. I have been awaiting the release of this game for months! After a two-year hiatus, the game picks up where the last one left off, with you and your partner Rick looking for the Preacher, the remaining Reaper. The game has a thrill-a-minute pace. The HOP scenes are very creatively designed. The puzzles are easy and vary in style. There are three collectibles - 15 feathers, 8 flowers called Widow?s Sorrows, and 21 morphing objects. There are 37 achievements as well. You will collect evidence throughout the game which will be displayed on an evidence board kept in your cell phone. . This game demonstrates excellence in creative game design with hand-drawn scenes. As you play the game, you hear in the background the sounds of Tibetan shamanic meditative music. STORY: The gaming script is excellent, continuing the tale of the fight between good versus evil. In this final chapter, there is only one Reaper remaining, the Preacher. This final episode of the series finds the demon Asmodai trying to resurrect himself in the body of the Preacher. You must locate something called the ?Wrath of God? which is the only way to stop the transference of the demon, Asmodai from occurring. HOP SCENES: The two HOP scenes in the demo are lists of items. One of them is a list of items which is interactive. The other one involves a stained glass window and is very creative in design. You look for items which are cleverly integrated into a stain glass window. This developer uses stained glass windows to reflect the element of ?light? to contrast the ?dark? nature of the game. AFTER THE DEMO: The HOP scenes I played were a list of items and a silhouette scene. PUZZLES: There are more puzzles than HOP scenes and all are easy; however they are unique and very creative. There is a maze puzzle which gives some background on the story of the Reapers. One of my favorite puzzles in this game was a multiple-step one in which you use a compass to triangulate the position of three points on a map to locate the Preacher. Other puzzles include a matching puzzle in which you match up symbols in a picture, a manual dexterity puzzle which has you using your mouse to balance yourself on a tree perched between two rather tall mountains, and a sequence puzzle involving books. AFTER THE DEMO: The puzzles I played included a logic puzzle to create medicine and a pipe puzzle. Both were easy. LEVELS: Casual, Advanced, Expert, Custom Skips and Hints for Mini-Games 10 to 120 seconds Hints for HOPS: 5 to 240 seconds EXTRAS: Map is provided as you play the game 37 Achievements (from what I could count) Collect 8 Widow?s Sorrow ? a flower Collect 15 feathers Collect 21 morphing objects Replay of HOP scenes and mini-games Strategy guide - 72 pages 14 Wallpapers, Concept Art, Music, Cutscenes HERE ARE THE DETAILS (SPOILERS) FOR THOSE WANT MORE INFORMATION ON THE HOP SCENES AND MINI-PUZZLES IN SEQUENCE HOP SCENES: A. List of items. This is a very creative HOP scene using a stained glass windows to locate the items which are well hidden within other objects within the window. So beautiful and so creative. B. List of items to locate. Interactive and puzzle-like. AFTER THE DEMO: C. List of items to locate which are thematic and include creating a sand mandala D. Silhouette puzzle to locate herbs and flowers. Well done PUZZLES: Puzzle Rating: (1) Extremely easy 2) Easy (3) A little difficult or time consuming (4) Moderately difficult (5) Difficult A. Logic problem. Move rungs of a telephone poll so that you may climb up the pole. Rating: 2 B. Maze puzzle. Move Asmodai?s dagger on a path in which you must make contact with every circular hub in the maze. Learn more about the demon Asmodai and his followers. Rating: 2 C. Inventory puzzle. Sliding rings. Slide four rings into position to create a picture on an inventory item. Rating: 1 D. Matching puzzle. Used throughout the game to analyze evidence which has been collected. E. Map puzzle. Locate three symbols on a map using a magnifying glass on a compass. Triangulate the 3 locations to learn your location. Rating: 2 F. Manual dexterity puzzle. Cross a deep chasm between mountains using a fallen tree as a bridge and a ski pole for balance. You will move your mouse left and right to keep your balance. Very creative puzzle. Hope you are not afraid of heights! Rating: 2 G. Multiple Step. (1) Matching puzzle. Reposition books in a line according to a picture. With an adorable baby blocking the books in the picture, this one is not as easy as it seems! Rating: 3 (2) Sequence puzzle. Push symbols on the books in correct order. You will start over if you slip up. Rating: 2 H. Matching: Match up symbols between two books. Rating: 2 AFTER THE DEMO: I. Logic puzzle. Interact with the scene to locate items you need to formulate medicine for a wound Rating: 2 J. Pipe puzzle. Connect pipes so that like colored ends meet. Rating: 2 July 23, 2016
HOLY MOLY-SITTING ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT! I have to get this game, I must have jumped out of my skin 5 or 6 times during the demo. I love this storyline about the Preacher and the Reapers. I have been following it since the last installment came out, and I had to get that game too. The fun gets better as you go along and the challenge is just right. The characters are believable with their dialog and the visuals are outstanding. I most definately recommend this game. :) July 23, 2016
Excellent 3rd entry in series Excellent 3rd entry. Interesting story, great graphics, atmosphere, good HOS, challenging objects to find. If you enjoyed the other entries, you will love this one. July 23, 2016
Based on Full game play + Bonus play- Details after the demo.... ********************May contain a spoiler******************* Standard Edition took me 5 hours Bonus play took 1 hour (I always play on custom mode and complete ALL hidden object scenes, and as many mini games as possible. I finished 19 of 22 mini games, which is huge for me, as I usually am not a huge fan of the mini games and prefer the HOS) TOTAL GAME PLAY: 6 HOURS I bought + played all three games in this trilogy from start to finish. I loved all of them. Enigmatis, Mists of Ravenwood was my favorite. All three of these games make use of game play in gorgeous locations. You aren't just rambling around an interior location you've seen a million times. There is not much fantasy in this game.... thank goodness. I have seen WAY to much fantasy this past year. You do see a winged "bird monster" (and in the 2nd edition, Mists of Ravenhood, there was an equally stupid flying monster-crow# but the bird ties in with this rather involved story and is the symbol of good, and Archangel Raphael. There is a part in the demo where you are looking down, and through, a crashed plane. It reminded me of the PS3 game Uncharted, where Drake hung from a bus. I was blown away how well this area was drawn and the perspective was perfect. Looking over a cliff down on rushing water will make you catch your breath as you watch a hawk fly UNDER you and realize how high up you are. GRAPHICS- Normally I can't stand hand drawn graphics and prefer the computer gen, due to clarity. But this game is like playing in an oil painting. The colors are bright, locations are gorgeous, and each new scene that came I would find myself "wowed" further. I absolutely LOVED how they kept the game gorgeous despite the fact the subject matter was dark. HOS, MGs and alternatives: The hidden object scenes are a mix. It has my favorite "list find" with 2 steppers. I did NOT notice and of the silhouette type #which I just can?t stand#. The ALTERNATIVE TO HOS is MATCH GAME. Since the HOS are my FAVORITE part of a hidden object game, I only played it once to see what it was like. It was SO much better then match 3.... too bad it wasn't an alternative to the mini games, which I am not always so fond of. CHARACTERS: These characters are so perfect they need their own title head. The same voice overs are back from the other games in this series and are some of the best I have ever heard. They speak from where they ARE within the scene. It made the game seem more real for me. MY FAVORITE PARTS IN GAME: I loved this demo, so chapter 1 and #standard for me....# Chapter 3. I am a major Tomb Raider fan, and chap 3 reminded me of "Lara land". You play in mountainous locations; outside, and in the woods some. By chapter 4 you are in a snowy region and the game turns darker. I don't like playing through snow and rain as it messes with the graphics for me. Event though the game is darker here, you are NOT in some ?weirdly aqua world? which was a huge plus. Chapter 5 has a great mini game. It is page 52 of the strategy guide. It is super fun. You need to prepare and powder color several shades of Jade and paint an artifact with them. Chapter 5 also had a terrific mini game across several locations using a metal detector to find objects. It was so super fun. NO DIARY: Evidence board instead. If I EVER saw a more convoluted storyline in a game in need of a notebook, it was this one. The evidence board did not really refresh the story than it did further the game. Occasionally you find a random notebook lying around that does explain the story a pinch more. BONUS PLAY: The final chapter was kind of a bummer for me. You play 9 areas. 6 of the 9 are revised from the final chapters of the SE. The 3 new areas are very pretty though so I am glad I got the CE. They include a cave which was a gorgeous room, a secret chapel & a narrow path. I REALLY loved this series and will probably replay the second Enigmatis so I can play the bonus since I'd only purchased the SE for that edition and wished I'd got the CE. There are 4 HOS in bonus play and 6 mini games. There is NO MAP in bonus and NO MORE COLLECTIBLES in bonus play. Though you still have that useless task book...geez I can't stand those task books. The storyline in bonus play happens in the period just before, and overlaps a pinch of when the timing of the demo starts. It has an awesome initial cut scene where I'm talking to Jenny. My character is BB #Britney#. Fang's father and Fang are in bonus too. TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA HOW LONG BONUS IS: Chap 1 is 11 pages, Chap 2 is 5pgs, Chap 3 is 11pgs, Chap 4 is 13pg, Chap 5 is 12p, Chap 6 is 4pgs, & bonus is 11pgs. CE GOODIES: 9 DL music tracks, 12 concept art which is only viewable, not DL. Replay 8 beautifully done cut scenes, There is an in- game strategy guide and bonus play took me about an hour. The ending of the Standard Edition is really powerful. You see Archangel Raphael, and a fight between good and evil. IF YOU LIKED THIS GAME: You will probably like: Mystery Tales, Her own eyes Whispered Secrets, Ever burning candle Grim Tales, The Wishes Also try Haunted Hotel, Charles Dexter Ward #an older game, maybe without a map, but a must see#. I want to thank Big Fish Games and Artifex Mundi. This game is like playing in a gorgeous oil painting. It was perfectly done. You gave me hours of happiness and I'll be sure to play this one again!! Please give me a screen saver next CE. If you make them, I?ll keep buying them? #shy of 400 games#! August 29, 2016
Ignite Me Enigmatis WOW Contender of game of the year. I love all their games. This one was heart stopping fun. I bought it right away. Morphing death skulls, collect white feathers, Lots to do, Great Characters, Good rapport back and forth between characters, Super cut scenes, Critter action, decent HO's, Love that the helper helps me and me not only helping him, And just a wonderful fast paced adventure. Only thing I could not figure out was how to turn off the tutorial on causal play. I ended up having to switch to customize mode to stop the pop ups. July 23, 2016
SUPER, SUPER GAME! I love this game! I played all game of the serie and this one is a step ahead of most games I have played in the last months. If you already like the other games, wait for the sales because the CE worth the price, not only for the achievements & collectibles (that are not so easy to find) but also for the bonus game. I highly recommend this game. July 24, 2016
A great end to a great series! I've played all Enigmatis games and I've loved them all, but the first and this last are, in my opinion, the best. The Shadow of Karkhala has great music, solvable puzzles, breathtaking graphics and, the best thing about it, a wonderful storyline. What makes the Enigmatis series great is the continuous facet of its story (chasing after the Preacher throughout the 3 games and finally catching him) and the whole lore about Asmodai and its cult. Another thing that also makes this game series great is the fact that it ended, in contrast to most HO series nowadays. However, as far as CE content goes, there's nothing much and the bonus story is very short and unnecessary. Well then, I definitely recommend this wonderful detective game that, even though it uses the same old "light versus dark" storyline, it actually manages to make it convincing and exciting in a hidden-object game environment. A jump-out-of-your-seat thrill ride in the conclusion of the Trilogy You detective have been hot on the trail of the demonic preacher since discovering him in Ghost of Maple Creek. Yet, he has managed to always stay one step ahead. A year later in the Mists of Ravenwood you had hoped to bring an end to the chase in the redwood forests of Northern California, but, like so many times before, the trail went cold. Two years have passed and in this edition you journey one last time to Maple Creek to discover new evidence regarding the Serial Killer Preachers whereabouts. Their you discover new clues which lead you to a monastery in the Himalayas of Tibet. The omnipotent evil demon Asmodai is your ultimate advisory, for The Preacher (last of the reapers) had intended from the beginning to allow Asmodai to enters his body and intends to finally get the power to dominate the whole world. Now it's up to you, using all of your wits and resources to once and for all STOP this menacing evil from coming to fruition. This is my all time favorite Hidden Object Adventure. It's a full throttle, must experience game that you don't want to miss. It is a big deal this time around because the immense power he is after might make it impossible for you to ever stop him if you catch him too late. You need to find "the wrath of God" to be able to stop the guy. It is an excellent story with a twist on every corner. Not only have the developers come with a great main game and a bonus chapter story, but they also have done a great job with the audio-visual presentation for the story. The scenes are hand-drawn and very detailed. The game is creepy and quite dark in a very mysterious and intriguing way. The voice-overs and the music are excellent. The game has a nice flow where all the elements come into place and turn into one big adventure, rather than separate parts. There are four modes of difficulty: Casual, Advanced, Expert, and Custom. I enjoyed every moment of this extraordinary adventure. I now what to go back and play all 3 editions from the beginning. LOL....Thank you Big Fish and Artifex Mundi for an incredible series worthy of Editors Choice!!! July 30, 2016
