Grim Facade: The Red Cat Collector's Edition 3.6 5 21 21
It's Darth Kitty! I was actually on the fence with this game because I wasn't "blown away" by this latest edition in the Grim Facade series, like others were, Why? Because there's a lot of familiarities, same scenery in Venice, same style of graphics, similar characters, same voiceovers, same tasks, similar and all too familiar storyline, and above all, the same features of collecting coins (actually looting other people's coins) to buy inventory items, and the same prop, a Memory Fragment Detector to catch the same orbs. All I have to say is, surely they mass produced this device in order for all my clients to have one in their possession, so why is that I don't have one? I'm a detective that seems to need this device in each and every case, so perhaps I should loot enough coins to buy one for myself. For those reasons I would rate this game with 4 stars. However, there was one feature in particular that helped to throw my other leg over the fence. There are collectible Mechanical Spiders, eh, no biggie in itself, but, if you go into the collections room, you get to play a fantastic game using the spider to eat all the flies on his web. It's not even that easy (but still quite doable) because you have to choose the highlighted flies and it's very easy to get stuck if you choose the wrong pattern. This type of thinking is way outside the box so for that reason alone, I gave it the 5th and final star fur purrfection. The only repeated feature I didn't mind was the return of the scrappy ole cat who seems to be everywhere, but I can't remember his name offhand. As I stated earlier, this is a rehash of the same story, a member of a small private organization within a small usually wealthy community goes rogue and seeks revenge on members who did him wrong. When the Mayor's son is slated to be the next victim, the detective is finally called in for help, and as always, they all know who the killer is and why, but don't bother to tell you because they know they deserve the punishment, they just don't want to die for their sins. In this case we have a gentleman dressed in a Red Cat suit, that sounds like darth vader, and leaves his signature calling card of a red cat symbol on their door, to torture them psychologically before doing them in. He seems to be playing a game of Cat and Mouse with the detective, as naturally, he's always one step ahead of him. Once again you are loaned a Memory Fragment Detector which is used in most scenes to scan for Memory Fragments to capture a recent memory which will be shown as a silhouetted clip. You will also collect coins all around town as you deem them free game, and you will launder these coins at the local shop to buy merchandise is needed to advance. The Collector's Bling is well worth the extra price point because of the previously mentioned collectible Mechanical Spiders that offer a sweet Mini Game of Eat all the Bugs in one continuous pattern. There's the usual Achievements to earn as well, actually there's one achievement that requires you to use the Hint feature in every scene, which is out of the normal or usual achievements to receive. The Hidden Object Scenes themselves aren't all that impressive because most are Interactive List finds, AND some of the HOP's are repeated twice which is a feature I loathe because it's just too boring a second time around. One thing I did find enjoyable was that almost every one of the HOP's have a puzzle to solve such as swapping square tiles, or putting fragments together. There are also several smaller Zoom Zone HOP's that are Multiple finds such as 5 nails or 4 ladder boards. (btw, what do you think happened to the shopkeepers ladder that caused the boards to fly off the ladder and land above the doorway?) The Mini Games are really entertaining, and are usually available in Casual or Hard difficulty settings which is genius because sometimes I want more challenge than other times. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo: 1) A four part Super Puzzle, Restore the circular image by swapping the pipe pieces. 2) Match all of the mechanical eyes by opening two eyes at a time. 3) Swap sides of red and blue tokens by sliding or jumping tiles. 4) Complete the image by rotating each token to align the images. 5) Drag the pipes covering the spiders legs to find and align holes over the symbols until you find the symbols that match the ones shown in the spiders eye. 6) Memory Fragment Device games require you to scan the device around the room when it glows until you capture all the floating orbs that cannot be seen with the naked eye. (but you can see all kinds of crazy things other than orbs!) 7) Catch the criminal by choosing the arrows to program your movements. 8) Follow the code to choose owl in the correct order. 9) Slide tiles to empty slots until the star can slide out easily. 10) Arrange the celestial symbols as shown on the clue by sliding on a track to available slots. 11) Swap hexagonal tiles so all the colors connect and light up. 12) Fill the gauges by dragging lines to connect at least 3 same colored lamps. This Collector's Edition has 15 replayable Mini Games, 19 replayable Hidden Object Scenes, 8 Movies, 4 Music Soundtracks, 4 Screensavers, 6 Wallpapers, 6 Concept Art, 12 Achievements to earn, Collectible Mechanical Spiders with Mini Games, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy! AN AWARD WORTHY NEW GRIM FAADE We all know cats have nine lives, right? Well it looks like my once favorite developer is having a resurgence of its life with some of its recent games and just maybe this new Grim Faade The Red Cat is leading the way. If you fondly remember the ?bunny team? from yesteryear, then you will be happy to know they are now alive and well and hopping right back into the winner?s circle. Returning to the roots of the first Grim Faade game you are once again in Venice and you?ve been called in by Mayor Ricci to investigate a series of murders where the only clue is a red cat imprint that is that is found at the scene of each crime. Mayor Ricci?s son received a red cat imprint and the mayor implores you to catch the culprit and save his son before it is too late. As has always been the case with this developer the graphics are excellent with terrific hand drawn scenes. The voiceovers are excellent and with a good sound track the scene is set for a wonderful mystery game. Many of the fundamental elements of the series are again found in this latest game since you will find coins that can be used to purchase items that will be needed to help with the case. There is also a gimmicky tool that will help you see remnants of the crime in retrospect as you investigate. The Red Cat is such a phenomenal game that I don?t want to give too much away since this is a game where discovering the puzzles and HOPS is something you should do for yourself. I will say that there is a very good variety in the puzzles and some of them are delightfully challenging or at least a bit above the norm. I think I enjoyed every element of this game when I tried the beta and knew that it would be one of those games that I would purchase without a second thought the minute it was released ? and I did! The game itself is so good that I wasn?t overly concerned about the CE content or perhaps the lack thereof. This developer is known for not including a lot of extras in its games but in this case, it is a good deal ? sale or not. IMHO, there are some good extras in the game as well as the strategy guide and bonus chapter. Even though I think this is probably one of the best games we have had this year (hopefully a good warm-up for the holiday gaming season ahead), I suggest that you try the demo to see if Grim Faade The Red Cat is one you will enjoy as well. I'M 'NOW' A GRIM FACADE FAN!! AFTER COMPLETING THE DEMO ONLY: I wasn't much of a 'GRIM FACADE' fan (I've only one other game), until now. I have to say that I am simply amazed at the quality of this game, and even though it's a CE (as I've mentioned many other times, I rarely buy CE's, as I don't need all of the extras), I'm going to have to against even myself, and buy this, as soon as I finish this review. HERE ARE MY PROS AND CONS (IF THERE ARE ANY): PROS: 1. The voice that they've found (A) to introduce the game, and (B) to use for the villain, are simply spot-on. Deep, resonating, sexy, and definitely easy to listen to. It catches your attention right away. 2. The graphics are superb. Nothing blurry or distorted. Extremely crisp, clear, and eye-catching. 3. The music is well chosen and appropriate for each scene. 4. The HOS are fun but somewhat different than what we've seen in a while, IMO. There are two instances where you have to find a photo. But when you click on it, you then have to put pieces of that completed photo, back in their appropriate place. You just don't 'click' on it, and that's it. 5. The mini-games/puzzles are challenging. You have the option of choosing between casual and hard. But they are usually completed in a 2-4 step process. The one that I find the most interesting is the 'lock' puzzle. You have to solve one puzzle before going on to the other three. before the lock is opened. These puzzles (at least in the demo) provide you with some challenge while still giving you that fun factor as well. 6.The first collectible item is the robotic spider (I hate spiders, by the way). This spider is attached to the mayor's son. In order to defeat this rather huge spider, you have to slide down sections of each leg to find the correct symbol that is displayed on his upper torso. This was rather fun, and it's not as easy as it sounds. As far as the other 'collectibles', I don't like to pay much attention to them while playing the demo because it takes away from the time allotted. Plus the fact that I was so 'INTO' this game, that bothering with them was a waste of my time. (until I purchase the game, that is). 7. You get this 'memory fragment' finder thingamajig (can't remember the actual name). It's a round object that resembles a crown. It sits in the lower left of your screen and lights up when it needs to find memories. You then trace it around the scene. When it gets close to a memory, it will bounce. But you have to be rather quick, as the memories tend to move around. You have to find 5 fragmented memories. CONS 1. The ONLY negative thing that I could find in this game was that the demo ended too soon. This is a great addition to the other GRIM FACADE games. I always check out new games, of course, and I have also checked out prior GF games, in the past. They must have been lacking in something or they would have been a purchase for me. As I mentioned above, I only have purchased one other GF game, but now after playing the demo on this one, I will now have TWO. As always, try the demo. You might be pleasantly surprised as I was. Enjoy :) October 22, 2016
PROBABLY THE BEST GRIM FACADE EPISODE TO DATE I love this game and have to get it. There are so many things to say about it. How do I begin? First off, the storyline is really good and attention to detail is obvious. It grabs you the minute it starts and doesn't let go. The creepy guy who is doing all the killing, even has a terrifying voice. I sighed heavily when the demo was over. The HOPs and mini-games were relevant to the story and challenging even when choosing Casual or Hard to play them. The music complimented the story very well and kept me on the edge of my seat. It was fun and the sense of urgency was ever present. Of course, the graphics are outstanding and I can't wait to see how it ends. Thank you BFG, this is a good one. Mia. October 22, 2016
ERS HAS RECLAIMED ONE OF ITS NINE LIVES IN THIS ?PURR?FECT GAME! 5 CHAPTER PLUS A BONUS CHAPTER ? BASED ON THE DEMO OVERVIEW: Reclaiming one of its nine lives, this game has resurrected ERS to gaming excellence with a ?purr?fect game ? a true puzzler?s delight! It contains beautiful graphics, opulent scenes with jewel-encrusted collectibles, and an engaging story which will keep you on edge figuring out the motive behind these crimes. This game also provides some new innovative approaches to puzzles ? with puzzles within the collectibles. This game was an automatic purchase for me. STORY: Be on the lookout detective for a ?cat,? a red cat to be exact ? a murderer who hides behind a cat mask leaving an image of a cat on the door of his next victim. Who is this ?Red Cat?? As in past games, the murderer is out for revenge against certain people within a village. The ?revenge? theme is consistent in this series; however, the story for this game does seem to go off in a new direction. Some elements of the last game have returned. You still collect coins to purchase items to be used in the game. Also returning is the Memory Fragment Detector which is used throughout the game to locate a number of bubbles to reenact a crime scene with shadow characters. This is a puzzle-intense game. What makes this game notable are the quality of the puzzles. These puzzles are a major step-up for this developer. RUBE- GOLDBERG PUZZLE (SUPER PUZZLE): There is a Rube-Goldberg puzzle (super puzzle) with puzzles which vary in style and difficulty. The puzzles include an easy matching puzzle, a switch puzzle in which you must switch the location of colored marbles, another switch puzzle to create a picture, and sliding tiles in which you rotate tiles to recreate a symbol. The symbol to be recreated is a little difficult because it is asymmetric in design. HARD/CASUAL SETTINGS: Returning for some of the puzzles is the option to choose between hard and casual settings. I like this feature because it appeases those who want to play an easy, breezy game and yet provides challenge for those who hungering for a little mental challenge. The ?hard? puzzles are relatively difficult. The puzzles are very creative in design. They include a matching puzzle which includes a mechanical spider. You must move parts of the legs to reveal symbols which match those on its body. Another unique puzzle is a maze puzzle in which you must chase the ?Red Cat? through a maze (3 times) and set up the route using arrows. Other puzzles include a variation of a Match-3 puzzle and a switch puzzle connecting hexagonal tiles by colored ends. COLLECTIBLE PUZZLES: You collect jewel encrusted insects. However, what is unique about the collectibles is that you can activate a game for each collectible and the games are all different. A collectible spider activates one type of maze puzzle to collect flies. A centipede opens another type of maze puzzle. Such a creative idea! HOP SCENES: The HOP scenes are principally lists of items to locate. However, the ones in the demo contain a mini-puzzle at the end of the scene. LEVELS: Casual, Advanced, Hard, Custom Hints and Skips: 5 to 200 seconds EXTRAS: Map is given to you at the start of the game 24 Achievements ? shown as red cards Memory Fragment Detector ? collect bubbles to replay crime scenes Collect coins as in previous games Strategy guide - 48 pages Replay 15 puzzles and 19 HOP scenes. 6 Wallpapers, 6 Concept art, 4 music tracks, 4 Screensavers, 8 Movies HERE ARE THE DETAILS (SPOILERS) FOR THOSE WANT MORE INFORMATION ON THE HOP SCENES AND MINI-PUZZLES IN SEQUENCE: HOP SCENES: A.
