Dark Tales: Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven Collector's Edition 3.1 5 33 33
I hate it when a RAVEN suddenly appears and makes that loud, annoying screeching sound: CAW CAW CAW BASED ON 60 MINS OF DEMO PLAY ONLY: I have every single one of the Dark Tales, Edgar Allan Poe SE games, and was anxious to see what this game had to offer. It did not disappoint. Here are my pros & cons: PROS 1. SCARE FACTOR: This has it all. It starts before you even begin the game, in the area where you choose your options, profile name, etc.. It displays a raven and a female-looking creature with an eerie mask. MUSIC: Very game appropriate. SCENES: It's everything you'd expect in this genre of game. The scene that shows three ravens (two missing their heads) looking down into a basin of water. You might not look innocently at water in the same way ever again. 2. GRAPHICS: The cutscenes are slightly above average with that eerie, misty-looking appearance which only adds to the overall mystery of the game. LIP-SYNCING: Very good with good, deep male voiceovers. 3. ATTENTION TO DETAIL: The developer went somewhat beyond the average when it comes to even the smallest of detail. From the blood coming from the house owner's mouth to the blood lying next to him after shooting himself in the head (allegedly) to the gun shop owner's whole physique added to the game. His beard, rough voice, messy hair, and clothing makes the game more realistic, IMO. Every SINGLE detail is important and gives the game the appropriate ambiance. 4. MINI-GAMES/PUZZLES: Puzzles are not my favorite, and this game was no exception. When playing the demo, you are aware of time restraints. This in itself only makes the puzzles probably harder than they actually are. Some of the puzzles ARE harder, IMO, but still with that fun factor. CONS 1. ITEMS TO COLLECT: Being absorbed totally in the game (and time restraints in the back of my mind), I didn't look for things that I'm supposed to collect in order to gain achievements. There will be other reviewers who will go into detail about achievements, things to collect, etc., so I won't waste your time. 2. COMPARISON TO OTHER DARK TALES- EAP GAMES: This game, however, didn't QUITE meet up to the other games overall, IMO. All in all, I will wait for the SE to come out and add it to my complete collection of Dark Tales: EAP games. Like always, give the demo a try. Enjoy :) December 29, 2016
The Best of the Series! Perfect from the very beginning! Loved the Hidden Object scenes, the plot, the graphics and this time, the puzzles! It's probably not for experts, unless you like an easy game. I will purchase this right away. Enjoy! December 29, 2016
A BLOOD MOON UNMASKS A WONDERFUL TRANSFORMATION IN DUPIN AND THIS SERIES 7 CHAPTERS PLUS A BONUS CHAPTER - REVIEW BASED ON THE DEMO OVERVIEW: Citizens of Coldstone! Celebrate the Day of the Raven by engaging in a game of mystery and intrigue in another ERS 5-star plus spellbinder! Who killed noted archaeologist Alan Dillinger and why? Get your crow mask out of storage and join the local citizens in a night of murder and mayhem under a blood moon. Dupin is back on the case with you as his assistant. Even Dupin even sees a transformation under this blood moon from a foppish detective to a sexy and ultra-masculine hunk! A secret society, The Raven Society, is behind all the murders and intrigue in the game. But, what are they up to? Get prepared to watch all fireworks exploding in this action-packed game. This game demonstrates ERS at their best ? beautiful old-style graphics combined with a horror-lite tale. In my opinion, horror-lite is their best genre for games. Although somewhat graphic, this game is not terribly scary. The graphics are ?bloody? good and well-portray the gaming script for this game. This is a puzzle-intense game which is just ?purr-fect? for me with the inclusion of a few alley cats! This is my favorite combo ? horror combined with puzzles. This game is a virtual puzzle-fest with few HOP scenes. With a wonderful gaming script and plenty of activities, this game has an excellent pace. There is only one collectible ? little devils. However, you do get to replay the puzzles and HOP scenes and there are quite a few achievements. HOP SCENES: There are only two (2) in the beta. However, they are creative. In one of the scenes, you locate three each of four items carefully hidden within the scenes PUZZLES: This game has the option for Casual and Hard settings on some of the puzzles. They are well-crafted and even the ?hard? settings not terribly difficult to solve. They include quite a few matching puzzles, one of which involves cards. There are a couple of excellent maze puzzles. In one of these puzzles you must get a scarab to the finish line while avoiding obstacles in its path and in the other you must do the same with a raven. There are also a couple of sequence puzzles, one of which involves ringing bells in order. I loved a matching puzzle in which you must ?remove? hoods to match up masks. There is one difficult mathematical puzzle in which symbols have been replaced by symbols. You must uncover the number for each symbol and then solve some equations to come up with the code to open a lock LEVELS: Casual, Advanced, Hard, Custom Hints and Skips: 5 to 200 seconds EXTRAS: Map is given to you at the start of the game 49 Achievements Collect 12 little devils Replay 29 Puzzles and 20 HOP scenes 11 Wallpapers, 11 Concept Art, 6 Screensavers, Music, 23 Movie segments Strategy Guide: 50 Pages HERE ARE THE DETAILS (SPOILERS) FOR THOSE WANT MORE INFORMATION ON THE HOP SCENES AND PUZZLES IN SEQUENCE HOP SCENES: A. List of items B. Locate 3 each of 4 different items. Very creatively designed. PUZZLES: Puzzle Rating: (1) Extremely easy 2) Easy (3) A little difficult or time consuming (4) Moderately difficult (5) Difficult A. Sequence/Matching puzzle. Ring bells in the correct sequence by matching them up with a given code. Choice between Casual and Hard. B. Maze puzzle. Get a scarab to the finish line overcoming enemies in his path. You will also need to open doors with specific colored keys to proceed. Choice between Casual and Hard. C. Manual dexterity puzzle. In a group of cards follow the movement of a green card 3 times to defeat a criminal. Rating: 2 D. Matching puzzle. Match up two halves for 12 cards. Rating: 3 E. Sequence puzzle. Press 6 buttons in the proper order to open a box. Rating: 1 F. Matching puzzle. Place buttons with images upon them into one of four columns according to relationship within the column. All buttons must relate in some way. Rating: 3 G. Mathematical puzzle. Decrypt a code and find out the numbers which have been replaced by symbols to solve some equations. Then enter those numbers on a lock to open a safe. Rating: 3 H. Logic puzzle. Figure out the last number dialed on a telephone by logically eliminating numbers. I. Maze puzzle. Move a raven through a maze while avoiding obstacles in your path. Rating: 2 J. Matching puzzle. Find people in matching masks. Quite creative. Rating: 2 December 29, 2016
Very different and steam punk ! A nice transformation for this old franchise. I enjoyed it. Lots of great hard puzzles and new HO's. It is a very long game, lots of things to do and places to go. Lots of hard work went into this game. January 5, 2017
Review based on Demo Play This game was a true Dark Tales, bloody, intense at times. I loved the scruffy cat, nice touch. It would seem we have a heroine to add to the detectives, but she's as deadly as whoever is ordering the murders. It's on my list to buy. December 29, 2016
Who does'nt love THE RAVEN! Love the story line, graphics...I have enjoyed all the Dark Tales Edgar Allan Poe's...Thank you! December 30, 2016
Very Different from the Other Dark Tales: Edgar Allan Poe's You Need to play this game yourself. Very different from the other Edgar Allan Poe's games. It is a fun thriller, suspenseful!!! I don't want to give away any of the plot!!! I highly recommend this game and wish the demo was a little longer to play!! Excellence game, good job Big Fish and keep games like this coming because I enjoy playing them! January 1, 2017
Lovely White Raven! She really looks good in white latex! And the Scarab-game is splendid! January 7, 2017
THE DAY OF THE CROW Allen Dillinger uncovered an ancient artifact (sure are a lot of these, but I guess nobody's interested in a modern day artifact) during one of his archeological digs of a Sumerian King. It is believed that this artifact can raise the dead, if buried with the artifact. Something strange began to happen to Allen shortly afterwards, his nightmares became reality, reality became his nightmares. Insanity consumed him, and sadly he took his own life. Detective Dupin has been asked to investigate his suspicious death, the only clue lies within his suicide note, penned to his lover, Lenore. The only problem is, she doesn't exist....or does she? This is probably one of the better Dark Tales offered in a long time, and the hand drawn graphics are top knotch. I'm still not blown away with this version of Edgar Allan Poe's: The Raven, because they all seem the same to me. The games always take place at night, the characters all look the same, the scenery always looks the same. There's just not much creativity, and the only CE bling offered is "Little Devils" collectibles, and even then, there are only 12 of them, and they aren't hidden or even a morphing object which would have made the feature more appealing. One of my biggest complaints with all ERS games, is that on my large screen monitor, the game stretches too much and I don't have access to anything along the edges of the screen, so I have to play their games in a small windowed mode. The Hidden Object Scenes are sparse in the demo, although some of the vast Mini Games could qualify for an HOP. At least the scenes aren't repeated, which is usually the case from this dev. In this demo, really there are just a couple HOP's offered, an Interactive list find and a Multiple of the same objects find. The Mini Games are pretty good, and most are offered in a Casual or Hard mode of difficulty. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo: 1) Ring the bells in the correct sequence as shown in the clue. 2) Get the scarab to the finish, avoiding enemies. 3) Follow the card with the green mark to defeate your enemy. 4) Arrange the weapon card halves to create the correct image matches. 5) Press buttons in the correct order. 6) Place the tokens beside the images they correspond to. 7) Decrypt and enter the safe code by figuring out the number each shape on the clue represents based on the equations. 8) Find the phone number by trial and error. 9) Use arrows to move the birds skull into the correct slot which will continue until it hits an obstacle or trap. Find identical masks by selecting two cloaked figures at a time. This Collector's Edition has 23 replayable Movies, 29 replayable Mini Games, 20 replayable Hidden Object Scenes, 11 Wallpapers, 11 Concept Art pictures, 6 Screensavers, 4 Music Soundtracks, 49 Achievements, 12 Collectible Devil Imps, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Adventure, enjoy! Really good game Based on the demo. This is really one of the best games I've played lately. Great story, lots of challenge, logical, lots of fun. The story is great and the creatures are gloriously creepy, including Dupin, who has lost his rugged good looks and looks almost as seedy as some of the creepy, crawlies. (I like that change in him - he was just too cute before.) I like my games to engage me, like a good novel, and this one delivers in that regard. That being said, I find I need to comment on the puzzles, which other reviewers classified as "easy." I found many of the puzzles to be very challenging, requiring a great deal of hand-eye coordination, as well as the ability to click fast. I was so frustrated by one of the puzzles (that took me more than 10 minutes of the 60-minute demo to solve) that I almost gave this game a negative recommendation. I'm still not sure I will buy it for myself. Based on all of the elements, I recommend this game, given the caveat that if you are old, arthritic or have bad eyesight, you MUST demo it first.
